ABSTRACT

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of silanes, thermal cycling and acid etching on the shear bond strength (SBS) of metallic brackets to feldspathic ceramic. Feldspathic ceramic cylinders (Groups 1, 2, 5 and 6) were etched for 60 s with 10% hydrofluoric acid and Groups 3, 4, 7 and 8, without acid etching. Two layers of silane Clearfil Ceramic Primer (CCP, Groups 1 to 4) and two layers of RelyX Ceramic Primer (RCP, groups 5 to 8) were applied and dried for 60 s. Brackets were bonded to the cylinders with Transbond XT and light-activated for 40 s with Bluephase G2. All specimens were stored in deionized water at 37 °C for 24 h, and the specimens of groups 1, 3, 5 and 7 were submitted to 7,000 thermal cycles (5 °C/55 °C). After storage, the SBS test was performed at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. Data were subjected to three-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test (α=0.05). The adhesive remnant index (ARI) was evaluated at 8x magnification. The SBS of CCP was significantly greater than of RCP (p<0.05), with or without thermal cycling. Thermal cycling significantly reduced the SBS (p<0.05). The groups submitted to acid etching showed significantly higher SBS than those without acid etching (p<0.05). In conclusion, thermal cycling reduced SBS for all groups. The best ceramic surface treatment for bracket bonding was achieved by acid etching and CCP silane. The ARI results showed predominance of score 0 for all groups.

A ciclagem térmica reduziu significantemente a RUC (p<0,05).

ABSTRACT

It has been reported in scientific literature, that eugenol inhibits polymerization of resin-based cements; this fact can influence retention of posts cemented upon this material. Recently, prefabricated resin posts reinforced with clear fibers have been introduced in the dental environment. The target of these new posts is twofold: the light used for polymerization can be transmitted to the resin cementing medium through the aforementioned posts, contributing thus to esthetic reconstruction and incidence decrease of endodontically treated teeth fractures. It has been shown that the use of a comprehensive acid-etch technique for extended time periods cancels residual eugenol effects in root canals on the light-transmitting posts and the resin used to cement them. In the present study 10 extracted teeth were subjected to root canal treatment. These teeth were sealed with gutta-percha points (cones) and zinc oxide-eugenol cement. For this endeavor, lateral condensation technique was used. Root canals were prepared with low speed burrs (as found in the endodontic-post system), to be then cemented with resin following the technique recommended by the manufacturer. Traction forces were applied until achieving dislodgement, at which point retention was assessed. Results: Retention of all samples was reflected into graphs. It could be appreciated that retention values among groups were unequal; it can therefore be established that no statistically significant difference was encountered. Conclusion: Residual eugenol did not interfere in post adhesion when an extended time acid etch technique was followed.

ABSTRACT

The present study aimed at evaluating the inner surface of two ceramic systems, after different surface treatments, performed by surface roughness tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). IPS Empress II (Ivoclar-Vivadent – Germany) and InCeram Alumina (Vita Zahnfabrick – Germany) were used. Fifty lozenge-shaped samples were made for each ceramic system according to the manufacturers’ specifications, and stored at room temperature prior to surface treatment; namely (n=10): non-treated (T0) (control); hydrofluoric acid (T1); hydrofluoric acid associated to airborne particle abrasion (T2); CoJet System (T3); Laser Nd: YAG (T4). Roughness measurement results were standardized in Ra. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey test (p<.001) were used to perform the stastistics analysis. For both control groups of the tested ceramics, analyses revealed the lowest roughness values; for the InCeram Alumina System, treatments such as hydrofluoric acid (T1), CoJet System (T3) and Laser Nd:YAG (T4) did not present any statistically significant difference, while for the IPS Empress II System, all treatments were statistically different. Photomicrographs by SEM showed different characteristics for each ceramic system treatment. Based on the resulting data, it can be concluded that the hydrofluoric acid treatment suits the IPS Empress II System, as well as the CoJet System suits the InCeram Alumina System. Further research might be done in order to get ideal parameters for the laser treatment.
