ABSTRACT

Abstract The aim of this study was to identify what makes college students take part in extracurricular activities, what kind of activities they join, and how they evaluate this experience. The participants were 24 students of Psychology and Economy from a university of Southern Brazil. The information was gathered through private semi structured interviews and was submitted to content analysis. Results showed that students of the sample identify the need to seek knowledge and opportunities to complement their educational background. To do so, they take part in volunteer work, research and extension projects, and internships. In general, participants evaluated extracurricular activities positively, once they make it possible to apply knowledge built in classroom into practice. However, the students face difficulties to join extracurricular activities. We conclude that professional exploration may contribute to students’ engagement with the course as well as to the development of self-taught behaviors, which are useful especially after graduation when students are concerned about joining the labor market....(AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract In view of the rise in sedentary lifestyle amongst young people, knowledge regarding their intention to partake in physical activity can be decisive when it comes to instilling physical activity habits to improve the current and future health of school students. Therefore, the object of this study was to find a predictive model of the intention to partake in leisure- time physical activity based on motivation, satisfaction and competence. The sample consisted of 347 Spanish, male, high school students and 411 female students aged between 13 and 18 years old. We used a questionnaire made up of the Sport Motivation Scale, Sport Satisfaction Instrument, and the competence factor in the Basic Psychological Needs in Exercise Scale and Intention to Partake in Leisure-Time Physical Activity, all of them adapted to school Physical Education. We carried out confirmatory factor analyses and structural equation models. The intention to partake in leisure-time physical activity was predicted by competence and the latter by satisfaction/fun. Intrinsic motivation was revealed to be the best predictor of satisfaction/fun. Intrinsic motivation should be enhanced in order to predict an intention to partake in physical activity in Physical Education students.

ABSTRACT

Sports idols can favor popularity and adherence to the sport practice. In the case of Artistic Gymnastics (AG), athletes like Arthur Zanetti and Daiane dos Santos gained notoriety in our society and seem to contribute to attract new athletes to this sport in Brazil. However, these novice gymnasts will need to be continually motivated as there are favorable and unfavorable factors surrounding this sport phenomenon. In order to discuss these factors, this study aimed to identify within the teachers aspects that favor or disfavor the motivation to practice AG at schools. As methodological procedure, we opted for a field survey in which we conducted semi-structured interviews with professionals who teach AG as after school activities on the outskirts of São Paulo city. The data treatment followed the guidelines of Content Analysis proposed by Bardin (2006). The results indicate the prevalence of unfavorable factors in relation to the favorable ones. We observed that teachers do not have the habit of questioning their students about their reasons that attracted them to AG. Most of them only inquiry the gymnasts when there's evident problem in relation to motivation. We believe that the physical education teachers need to know, reflect, and act upon the unfavorable factors in order to decrease the rate of dropout of this sport practice. We highlight that knowing the favorable factors would contribute positively to the motivation, as the teacher may meet the students' desires and needs.(AU)

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate medical school applicants' involvements in extracurricular activities including medical volunteering/community services, nonmedical community services, club activities, leadership role, and research. METHODS: Extracurricular characteristics were compared for 448 applicants (223 males and 225 females) who applied to Kangwon Medical School in 2013 to 2014. Frequency analysis, chi-square test, and simple correlation were conducted with the collected data. RESULTS: The 448 applicants participated in medical volunteer/community services (15.3%), nonmedical community services (39.8%), club activities (22.9%), club officials (10%), and research (13.4%). On average, applicants from foreign universities participated in 0.9 medical volunteer/community service, 0.8 nonmedical community service, 1.7 club activities, and 0.6 research work. On the other hand, applicants from domestic universities reported 0.2 medical volunteer/community service, 1.0 nonmedical community service, 0.7 club activity, and 0.3 research. CONCLUSION: Involvement in extracurricular activities was extensive for medical school applicants. Participation in extracurricular activities differed between applicants from foreign and domestic universities. Females consistently reported greater participation in extracurricular activities than males. The data can be helpful for admission committees to recruit well-rounded applicants and compare between applicants with similar academic backgrounds.
