ABSTRACT

Purpose: To identify the facial anthropometric parameters that predict the difficulty during femtosecond (FS) laser. Methods: This was a single?center observational study was conducted on participants between the ages 18 and 30 years who were planned for FS?LASIK (femtosecond laser?assisted laser in situ keratomileusis) or SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction) at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, AIIMS, New Delhi, India. The front and side?facing images of the participants were analyzed using Image J software to measure different anthropometric parameters. The nasal bridge index, facial convexity, and other parameters were measured. The difficulty faced by the surgeon during docking was recorded for each subject. The data were analyzed on Stata 14. Results: A total of 97 subjects were included. The mean age was 24 (±7) years. Twenty?three (23.71%) subjects were females while the rest were males. Difficulty in docking was seen in 1 (4.34%) female and 14 (19%) males. The mean nasal bridge index was 92.58 (±4.01) in subjects with deep?set eyes and 89.72 (±4.30) in normal subjects. The mean total facial convexity was 129.28 (±4.24) in deep?set eyes, and 140.23 (±4.74) in normal subjects. Conclusion: Total facial convexity appeared as the most important feature, with the value being less than 133° in most subjects with unfavorable facial anthropometry

ABSTRACT

Objective To make a preliminary study on self-perception of profile among orthodontic patients.Methods A total of 226 orthodontics patients (79 males and 147 females with average age of 19.3 years) were enrolled in this study.All the patients were treated in the Department of Orthodontics,Sun Yat-sen University Hospital of Stomatology during May to August 2016.Self-perception of profile was investigated in the patients.They were asked whether they had ever noticed their own profile and to choose from among various photos the one that most resembled their own profile.Then profile photos of patients were taken and measured.Differences between self-perception profile and actual profile were compared using paired t test.Results There were 147 patients (41 males and 106 females) answered that they had noticed their own profile.Difference was significant between patients' actual profile and self-perception profile (P<0.05).Difference was significant between male patients' actual profile and self-perception profile (P <0.05).Difference was not significant between female patients' actual profile and self-perception profile (P > 0.05).Compared with male patients,difference was smaller between female patients' actual profile and self-perception profile.Conclusions Compared with male patients,female patients put more emphasis on their own profile.Patients' self-perception of their own profile is not accurate.Female patients' self-perception of their own profile is more accurate than male patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective To develop a Class Ⅲ twin-block magnetic orthopedic appliance (TMOA-Ⅲ) and to investigate the treatment effects of this appliance on skeletal Class Ⅲ malocclusion of mixed dentition and early permanent dentition.Methods The sample consisted of 76 Chinese children (42 males and 34 females,mean age 9.1 years) with Class Ⅲ malocclusion caused by maxillary retrognathism,and the subjects were divided into a treatment group and a control group.The treatment group,38 subjects (21 males and 17 females),were instructed to wear TMOA-Ⅲ for 5-8 months (mean 7.5 months) and the control group,38 subjects (21 males and 17 females),did not wear any appliance.Cephalometric radiographs were taken and measurement data were used for analysis.Results Compared with the control group,patients of the treatment group showed a favorable increase of maxilla length and anterior movement (PNS-A,P<0.001;SNA,A-NPg,P<0.05),and skeletal Class Ⅲ facial profiles improved (UL-EL,NsPgs-HL,Facial convexity,P < 0.001;LL-EL P < 0.005).Conclusions The results indicate that TMOA-Ⅲ is effective for the treatment of Class Ⅲ malocclusion caused by maxillary retrognathism in mixed dentition and early permanent dentition,which provides another choice for the treatment besides the face mask.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the influential factors of esthetic evaluation of mandibular prominence by orthodontic patients from two dimensions (ideal value and tolerance range).Methods 226 orthodontic patients were investigated by an electronic questionnaire of esthetic evaluation of mandibular prominence.Binary logistic regression was adopted to analyze the influential factors.Results The tolerable boundary value for female mandibular retrognathism was affected by age (OR1.360) and orthodontic history (OR2.849).The tolerable boundary value for female mandibular prognathism and male mandibular retrognathism were found to be affected by orthodontic history (OR2.557 and 2.845,respectively).The tolerable boundary value for male mandibular prognathism was affected by age (OR1.347) and orthodontic history (OR2.310).The ideal value of male mandibular prominence was affected by age (OR1.420).Conclusions Orthodontic patients' esthetic evaluation of mandibular prominence is influenced by age and treatment condition,but not by sex,education level,marital status and personal profile.

ABSTRACT

The perception of facial esthetics is critically important to orthodontists. A viewpoint to facial esthetics is influenced by various factors and dependent on the perception of observer. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences regarding esthetic viewpoints among orthodontists, to identify attractive profiles preferred to orthodontists and to present the characteristic aspects of attractive profiles upon the degree of facial convexity. 35 persons whose faces were judged as attractive one by 5 orthodontists were selected out of 133 young Korean women. Soft tissue profiles identified as a good-profile group were measured and analyzed. And then according to the facial convexity, good-profile group was subdivided to convex (G-Sn-Pg9degrees) and straight (G-Sn-Pg<9degrees) groups for the purpose of this study. There were statistically no significant differences regarding esthetic viewpoints among 5 orthodontists(p<0.05), even if there exists prevailing concept that the standard for facial esthetics is substantially subjective. N-Pg-Sn and N-Pg-Pn, measured for determining anteroposterior relationship of midfacial convexity, showed significant differences statistically between 2 subgroups (p<0.05) while nasolabial angle, labiomental angle, and vertical measurements didnt show statistically significant difference between 2 subgroups (p<0.05). And all the measurements related to lip position, H-angle, Ls to E line, Li to E line and Pg to Sn perp., had statistically significant differences between 2 subgroups (p<0.05). The results indicate that the attractive facial profile has different characteristics to be recognized as a good facial pattern, which depend strongly on anteroposterior position of nose, upper and lower lips, and chin.
