ABSTRACT

Abstract This study aims to ascertain whether parenting stress and social support contribute to father involvement (FI), and to analyze the relationship between this involvement and sociodemographic variables (parent/child). The participants were 92 men, parents of school-aged children (6 to 9 years). The Father Involvement Scale and the Portuguese adaptions of the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form and Social Support Questionaire. Only parenting stress (Interaction and Child subscales) was found to be a predictor of FI (Caring and Availability subscales). A relationship between FI and the number of children was also observed. The results suggest that high levels of parenting stress may jeopardize fathers' involvement in terms of caring and availability, while the higher number of children is also a relevant factor.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The present study aimed to analyze predictors of father's involvement in day-to-day activities related to the child, from his perspective (beliefs about the role of the father), but also testing the regulatory role of the mother (maternal beliefs). Parents (e.g., education) and child's (e.g., sex) sociodemographic variables were controlled. Participants were 241 Portuguese bi-parental families (father, mother and target-child). Multiple hierarquical regression analyses showed that only for care the models reached significance, and that the predictors of father's involvement vary according to the domains analyzed. An interaction effect was found between mother's beliefs and child sex, suggesting that mothers have a role in the way fathers are involved in direct care with girls. These results foster important questions for interventions with families in order to promote father's positive involvement.

ABSTRACT

An ample body of scientific evidence exists, documenting the importance of the father-child relationship. The objective of this study was to develop a theoretical model of father involvement, organized according to the principles of Structural Equation Modeling, which require specification of the variables associated with the central construct, based on empirical data. In 2015, a systematic search was conducted in the databases APA PsycNET, Bireme, PEPSIC, Web of Science and IndexPsi Periódicos, using the descriptors "involvement" and "father", crossed with "measure", "scale", "tool" or "instrument", in both the English and Portuguese languages. There were no restrictions on the year of publication. In total, 39 complete texts were located, that included data on father involvement. The information in these texts was grouped into three categories: (a) dimensions of father involvement, (b) factors affecting father involvement and (c) impacts of father involvement on other variables. The model presented synthesizes the results of these studies, representing an advance in theory development in this area. This model increases the visibility of conceptual issues about father involvement and its correlates, and, following empirical testing, may contribute to the improvement of intervention programs for fathers.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT This study investigated father involvement at 24 months of a child's life. Twenty seven fathers, aged 19 to 40, were interviewed. The fathers' answers were analyzed using content analysis, based on three dimensions: interaction, availability, and responsibility. The results indicated that the fathers interacted with the children according to the specific needs and capabilities of their 24-month-olds, at a stage when they become more autonomous. The fathers reported that they were involved in care activities, especially helping the children to deal with their own demands. At the same time, the fathers were involved by interacting, being available and showing concern for their children. Nevertheless, the fathers' participation was noticed as lower when compared to that of the mothers, even when the father shared care and responsibility.

ABSTRACT

The greater involvement of the mother on the caring for her child lead to a proliferation of studies on this relationship and much less about the father-child relationship. The empirical literature and theoretical production was affected with a shortage of concepts. Among the concepts commonly used, this study highlights the "father involvement" and "experience of fatherhood". We present some theoretical and empirical aspects associated with these two concepts in order to contribute to a theoretical and methodological approach that can be used to investigate the fatherhood. The characteristics of these concepts were highlighted, illustrating them with father reports found in the literature, contributing to its theoretical and operational definition and to specify the particularity of each concept. We hope that this study will contribute to arouse the interest of scholars about the studies on fatherhood, as it become increasingly relevant in a society where traditional parental roles are with increasingly tenuous boundaries

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study investigated father involvement with their babies and the child care center during the first six months after the baby entered in the day care center. It was performed a collective case study, with a longitudinal design, in which four fathers answered an interview at three moments: entry in the child care center, one month and six months later. Qualitative content analysis indicated that the day care center and the baby's development helped the father to be more involved with his work and his personal life. The present study shows the importance of taking into consideration the needs and capacity of fathers involved in infant care.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the paternal involvement of 35 parents (18 to 40 years old), whose child was 12 months old. The fathers answered an interview and their answers were examined through qualitative content analysis, based on three dimensions of paternal involvement: interaction, availability and responsibility. Fathers reported getting involved with the child according to the specific needs and skills of 12 months old when the baby becomes more responsive. However, some parents reported not having the necessary skill to take care of a baby, which can contribute to a reduced involvement with the child. The study results evidence that fathers have showed the competency to deal with a baby with new skills, even if, at times, they seemed to have difficulty or even preferred that the mother perform certain activities.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing maternal depression in low-income families with young children. METHODS: The study consisted of 376 mothers in low-income families from participants enrolled in the population-based study of 2011 PSKC by Korea Institute of Child Care and Education. The factors including depression, self-esteem, parenting stress, marital conflict, father involvement in child rearing, social support, and family life event were assessed with questionnaires. Data analysis was conducted by description analysis, partial correlation, and hierarchical regression using SPSS 22.0 program. RESULTS: The results showed that 10.6% of mothers were in severe depressive group in this study. Also the result revealed that marital conflict was the strongest predictor of maternal depression. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that mothers with young children in low-income families especially had difficulty with depression due to family related factors. Implications included the need to support mothers and develop intervention programs focusing on family relationships in order to improve and sustain mental health.

ABSTRACT

The present study investigated father's involvement in infant's first year in the context of the maternal postpartum depression (PPD). Eleven fathers from 23 to 44 years participated in this study, whose wives presented PPD symptoms were interviewed. The interviews were examined through content analyzes, based on three dimensions of father involvement: interaction, accessibility and responsibility. Results showed that interactions between father-infant pervaded situations of playing and care giving. However, the latter were less often and most commonly were done upon the request of the mother. Feelings of incompetence and insecurity about the care concern for the emotional state of the mother and her overhead also were reported. Father also showed problems regarding time to assist the mother in care giving for the child, pointing for the mother the greatest responsibility for the child. The results suggest that in the context of DDD the father may be so weakened as the mother and thus he may have difficulties in coping with the demands of emotional and instrumental maternal support, as well as to engage with the child.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Recent initiatives have promoted the participation of fathers in the early care of their children. Objective: To assess the results of a program to encourage parental involvement in childbirth. Parents of healthy term newborns were randomly allocated to participate either in the birth experience or control. Patients and Methods: The protocol included: to dry the skin, umbilical cord cutting off, weight, height, and finally give him/her to the mother for the skin-to-skin contact. Heart rate (HR), respiratory (RR) and temperature were evaluated one hour later. In the first outpatient clinic assessment, mothers completed a questionnaire. 127 fathers participated either in the birth experience or control. Results: 62 followed the protocol and 65 the control. Both newborn groups were comparable. Also were fathers in age, education and rurality; mothers in primiparity. Significant differences: night care (37/62, 10/65 59.6% vs 15.4%, p < 0.01); post prandial assistance (50/62, 14/65 80.6% vs 21.5%, p < 0.01); participation in bathing (38/62, 61.3% vs 15/65, 23.1%, p < 0.01); newborn visit upon arrival at home (46/62, 74.2% vs 22/65, 33.8%, p < 0.01); helping in crying episodes (42/62, 67.7% vs 17/65, 26.1%, p < 0.01). There was stability in HR, RR and temperature one hour postpartum. Only one case of complication among parents (fainting). Conclusions: There were more cases of early care behaviors among participating fathers at birth, even belonging to a discouraging socio cultural environment.

ABSTRACT

This study assessed the effectiveness of an intervention program for parents on parental involvement. Participants were divided into three groups. In experimental group 1 (GE1), composed of 29 people (parents and children), only fathers received intervention. In experimental group 2 (GE2), composed of 36 parents and 38 children, only mothers received intervention. In control group, composed of 34 people (parents and children), parents received no intervention. To assess the frequency of father involvement, parents and children of all groups answered the questionnaire “Assessment of father-child relationship” in three different moments: before the intervention (pre-test), after the intervention (post-test) and one year after the beginning of the intervention (follow-up). In groups GE1 and GE2, the frequencies of communication between father and child and of involvement of the father in school, cultural and leisure activities of the child were significantly higher in the post-test than in the pre-test.

The fathers' interviews were content analyzed, based on three dimensions of father involvement: interaction, accessibility and responsibility. Fathers reported their involvement in many care activities, although not always routinely. They also mentioned worries and a much involvement in decisions related to care, education and baby's health. However, fathers considered their participation less than desired due to work-related time restrictions. These results indicated an increase in father involvement during the baby's third month and the need for emotional support for the fathers during this family transition.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to examine the relationships between indicators of parental involvement and their children’s social and included 97 father-mother pairs (parents of children in the first or second grade), and 20 teachers. To evaluate father involvement, fathers and mothers completed an Evaluation of personal and family wellbeing and the parent-child relationship - Fathering Version, and to evaluate the children’s social development, the mothers, fathers and teachers completed the Social Skills Rating System-SSRS. The results indicate that more frequent: communication between father and child, paternal participation in child caregiving and in the child’s school, cultural and leisure activities are each associated with indicators of lower hyperactivity, fewer behavior problems and a wider repertoire of appropriate social skills. These results point to the importance of the constructive involvement of fathers for their children’s social development and the likely benefits of programs to promote father involvement.
