ABSTRACT

Abstract BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 has several mechanisms of action related to inflammatory responses, especially in individuals diagnosed with obesity. This hyperinflammatory clinical profile resulting from the association between obesity and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may be attenuated by regular physical activity. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to review the evidence on the consequences of physical inactivity and physical activity on COVID-19 in patients with obesity. DESIGN AND SETTING: Narrative review at the Bahiana School of Medicine and Public Health in Salvador, Brazil. METHODS: We searched evidence on the association of COVID-19 with physical activity and obesity using the following keywords: "covid-19," "physical activity," and "obesity". The databases used were MEDLINE (PubMed), ScienceDirect, and Virtual Health Library. Studies published from 2019 to 2021 and available in Portuguese, English, and Spanish were included. The final search was conducted on September 26, 2021. RESULTS: We identified 661 studies in the database, among which 71 were considered for inclusion in the narrative review of the molecular aspects of COVID-19 and its relationship with physical activity and obesity. CONCLUSION: This literature review enabled the perception of the relationship between the molecular mechanisms of COVID-19 and obesity. Regular physical activity had various benefits for the inflammatory condition of the studied population, highlighting moderate-intensity.

ABSTRACT

The main interest is to contribute to dismantle from our experiences as researchers and diagnosed women, the stigma that permeates the daily lives of people like us: obese or with HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). Methodology: Through the methodology known as duoethnography, in which two individuals narrate shared experiences to study in detail a sociocultural phenomenon, we present a series of thoughts that question the place in which we are placed when we are valuated as sick. Results: We found, from our simultaneous reflections, three epiphanies that relate first to biomedical stigma, then to personal stigma and then to sociocultural stigma. A fourth epiphany expounds joint learning considerations during the authors' academic shared experience. Conclusion: We are interested, above all, in leaving an invitation to critically consider stigma, we are concerned with talking about care and pointing out discriminatory practices rather than denying our diagnoses.

ABSTRACT

This article seeks to investigate the place of the body nowadays, since it is never fully apprehended by cultural devices that allow its complete submission to social expectations. In this sense, it is legitimate to affirm that there is some epistemic difficulty, regarding the disputes of narratives around the fat body. Culturally legitimized, we observe a dominant discourse that suggests the responsibility of the subject for body condition. Similarly, the criminalization of fat increases when we overwrite it the issue of gender, as some vignettes will illustrate; the result of interviews previously conducted by the author, in the research she develops on the female body, image, psychic suffering and social regulation. The "ugliness" or the "strange" can often be taken as a message, whose strength lies precisely in its surprising presentation. In this sense, body practices can be understood in a scenario of indifferentiation, in the instantiation of everyday life, of subjection to the discourse of the other, but also, as a contestation, as a problematization of the body's status in contemporaneity.

ABSTRACT

<p>The purpose of the present study was to examine the associations between physical fitness and body fatness with blood lipid profile in 231 Japanese children and adolescents (12.1 ± 1.5 years). The primary outcomes of the present study were a lipid risk score which was calculated by summing up z scores of three lipid items (triglycerides, low density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and high density lipoprotein-cholesterol). Physical fitness was assessed by using the Japanese standardised fitness test. For body fatness, a percentage of overweight was calculated with using age-, sex-, height-specific standardised body mass. For combined analysis (fitness × fatness), the participants were cross-tabulated into four groups (Non-Obese/Higher-Fit, Non-Obese/Lower-Fit, Obese/Higher-Fit, and Obese/Lower-Fit). The results demonstrated that the participants in fitness categories A/B [most fit] and C [middle] demonstrated the lower (better) lipid risk score than the participants in fitness categories D/E [least fit] (F (2, 222) = 6.03, p = .003). For body fatness, the lipid risk score in obese group was significantly higher (worse) than that in thin and normal groups (F (2, 222) = 6.08, p = .004). The combined analysis showed that there was a significant interaction (fitness × fatness) on the lipid risk score (F (1, 221) = 4.05, p = .047), suggesting that Obese/Lower-Fit group had the worst risk score compared to the other groups. The present study suggests that improving both fitness and body fatness might be important for better lipid profile in Japanese children and adolescents.</p>

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the association between physical activity and body fatness with serum vitamin D level in older adults. METHODS: A total of 233 older adults (39 men and 194 women) aged older than 65 years were voluntarily recruited from a local community. Physical activity was monitored using a uniaxial accelerometer. Body fatness was measured using a standardized protocol. Subjects were classified as sufficient (>30 ng/mL), insufficient (20-29 ng/mL), or deficient (<20 ng/mL) based on serum vitamin D level. Pearson correlation analyses were used to calculate bivariate correlations between variables. Logistic regression was used to determine the odds ratio of serum vitamin D inadequacy. RESULTS: There were linear increases in physical activity parameters including daily steps (P<0.001), low-intensity physical activity (P<0.001), moderate-intensity physical activity (P<0.001), and high-intensity physical activity (P<0.001) and linear decreases in body fatness parameters such as body mass index (P=0.039) and waist circumference (P=0.020) across incremental vitamin D levels. Vitamin D level was positively associated with daily steps (P<0.001), low-intensity physical activity (P<0.001), moderate-intensity physical activity (P<0.001), and high-intensity physical activity (P<0.001) and negatively associated with body mass index (P=0.001), percentage body fat (P=0.005), and waist circumference (P=0.003). Compared to the active group (reference), the inactive group (P=0.001) had a significantly higher odd ratio for serum vitamin D deficiency even after adjusting for age and sex (P=0.002). CONCLUSION: The findings of this study suggest that physical activity and vitamin D supplementation should be promoted for healthy aging.

ABSTRACT

Background: Published health promoting or health risk behaviors data in a young population is sparse for Saudi Arabia. Identifying health risk factors early in life and promoting primary prevention interventions among the youth is of utmost importance to move in a healthier direction Objectives: The aim of this study is to identify the socio-economic factors influencing BMI in female students in University of Hail. Methodology: A cross sectional survey was carried out to evaluate dietary behaviors in a random sample of 200 adolescent students, from UOH female campus during the winter semester. Self administered questionnaire for dietary behaviors was used for survey by following anonymity and privacy. Results: This study was conducted to measure BMI and determine the socioeconomic factors affecting the relative weight of young adult females living in the city of Ha’il, Saudi Arabia. A total of 200 female subjects (mean ± SD: age: 19.76 ± 1.98 years and BMI: 23.47 ± 5.58 kg/m2) participated in the present survey. 28.5 % percent of study sample were either overweight or obese. Age wise distribution indicates overweight and obesity significantly increases with age. Breakfast is frequently skipped in overweight and obese subjects while frequency of snacking less among them. Findings of the current study also suggest habit of frequent snacking behavior inverse association with BMI. The current study findings have indicated no clear impact of physical activity on obesity prevalence.

ABSTRACT

From the eighties on the body culture started to become a fashion theme, object of specialists' concern and anguish source for the women. In a society where the body, besides a consumption object, becomes the privileged locus of the feminine identity, the relationship with one's own body becomes unpleasant and persecutory. Taking fatness as a paradigm of ugliness, a clinical case is presented in order to point out how attitudes in relation to fatness produces subjectivities as well as specific social bonds marked by social exclusion. This social rejection provokes a deep psychic suffering frequently observed at the clinic with obese people. Taking as reference the psychoanalytic theory as well as its reading of the family dynamics we intend to understand the obesity also as a symptom that apart from looking for an enunciation of what cannot be said, points out to some of the family's dysfunctions.

ABSTRACT

The objective was to map QTL on porcine chromosome 4 and to associate them with carcass and internal organ traits in an F2 population. The F1 population was produced by outbreed crossing, using two native Brazilian breed Piau boars and 18 commercial sows. A total of 617 F2 animals issued from 11 F1 boars and 54 F1 sows were typed for a total of five microsatellite markers. The data were analyzed by multiple regressions developed for the analysis of crosses between outbred lines, using the QTL Express software. Significant evidence for QTL was found for pig chromosome 4 regarding carcass and internal organ traits. All QTL were detected in the same region of the chromosome, designated FAT1.

ABSTRACT

This study was intended to collect the baseline information on dietary behavior of adults to develop nutrition education program in the context of healthy weights at community level. Nutrient intakes of 128 housewives were assessed by 24 hour recall method. Also food habits, nutrition knowledge and attitude were investigated by self-administered questionnaires. Subjects were divided to under-weight, normal-weight, over-weight groups by body mass index (BMI). Most under-weight groups evaluated as their current body images were normal. 41% of normal-weight groups judged as their current body images were obese. Energy and fat intakes of over-weight group were significantly higher than that of under-weight and normal weight groups (p < 0.05). However, carbohydrate and protein intakes showed no significant differences among the three groups. It appeared that active attitude toward change in nutrition attitude of normalweight group was significantly higher than that of under-weight group (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences of food habit score, nutrition knowledge, and obesity habit scores among the three groups. The frequency of eating-out showed significant difference among three groups (p < 0.05). Food habit scores were positively related to health-concerned attitude (r = 0.174), convenience-concerned attitude (r = 0.229) and food enjoyed attitude (0.213) and negatively related to obesity habit score (r = -0.206). Also, positive correlation of body fat mass with frequency of eatingout (r = 0.213), instant food (r = 0.227) and amount of meal (r = 0.187) existed (p < 0.05). We concluded that nutrition education programs for housewives should include specific strategies to modify unsound food behaviors and inappropriate perception of body image for a healthy weight.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the dynamics of body mass index (BMI) and abdominal fatness of women in postpartum period, and to find cut-off values of BMI to predict android obesity. METHODS: Forty-three uncomplicated postpartum women were included. BMI and abdominal fatness using bioelectric impedance method were measured three times; at postpartum one day, one week, and six weeks. RESULTS: BMI was 24.9 +/- 2.6, 24.1 +/- 2.4, 23.0 +/- 2.4, and abdominal fatness was 0.842 +/- 0.035, 0.845 +/- 0.039, 0.839 +/- 0.036 at postpartum one day, one week, and six weeks, respectively. The incidence of overweight women (BMI 25-29.9) was 46.5%, 34.9%, 25.6%, and the incidence of android obesity (abdominal fatness>0.85) was 37.2%, 32.6%, 30.2% at each three postpartum period. The cut-off values of BMI to predict android obesity was >25.3, >23.6, and >22.9 at postpartum one day, one week, and six weeks, respectively. CONCLUSION: The dynamics of postpartum body weight must be explored with abdominal fatness as well as BMI. Further prospective long-term follow-up studies in a larger scale will be warranted to confirm these findings.
