ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the relationship between negative evaluation fear and mobile phone addiction, and the mediating role of balanced time perspective. Methods:In April 2021, totally 1 158 secondary vocational school students were investigated by scales of fear of negative evaluation(FNE), mobile phone addiction index(MPAI)and Zimbardo time perspective inventory(ZTPI). The balanced time perspective was calculated by deviation from the balanced time perspective(DBTP). SPSS 20.0 statistical software was used for descriptive statistical analysis and correlation analysis of the data.Bootstrap method was used to test the mediating effect.Results:(1) Negative evaluation fear(37.87±7.71)was significantly positively correlated with balanced time perspective(4.50±0.75)( r= 0.379, P<0.01) and mobile phone addiction(46.11±11.92)( r=0.437, P<0.01). The balanced time perspective was significantly positively correlated with mobile phone addiction( r=0.475, P<0.01). (2) Negative evaluation fear directly and positively predicted mobile phone addiction( β=0.300, 95% CI=0.248-0.352). The balanced time perspective played a partial mediating role between negative evaluation fear and mobile phone addiction, and the mediating effect value was 0.137, accounted for 31.31%(0.137/0.437) of the total effect. Conclusion:The fear of negative evaluation can directly affect the mobile phone addiction behavior of secondary vocational students, and can also indirectly affect the mobile phone addiction by affecting the balanced time perspective.Good balanced time perspective can reduce the risk caused by the fear of negative evaluation.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To examine the roles of the threat to self-moderator (intolerance of uncertainty) and the motivational moderator (meaning in life) in the relationship between triggering variables (thwarted belongingness and fear of negative evaluation) and outcome variables (suicidal ideation and suicidal behavior) based on the integrated motivational-volitional model of suicidal behavior. Methods:A total of 1 325 university freshmen were investigated with the thwarted belongingness questionnaire, the brief fear of negative evaluation scale, the intolerance of uncertainty scale, the meaning in life questionnaire, the positive and negative suicide ideation inventory and the suicidal behaviors questionnaire-revised.SPSS 24.0 software was used for descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, Pearson correlation analysis, and moderating effect analysis. AMOS 20.0 software was used for mediating effect analysis. Results:(1) Female students had more fear of negative evaluation than males ((41.89±9.96), (40.31±10.68), t=2.03, P<0.05). Students from rural areas experienced more thwarted belongingness than students from urban areas ((23.83±8.87), (22.49±9.17), t=2.51, P<0.05). (2) Thwarted belongingness, fear of negative evaluation, and intolerance of uncertainty were positively related to suicidal ideation and suicidal behavior ( r=0.24-0.59, all P<0.001), while meaning in life was negatively related to suicidal ideation and suicidal behavior ( r=-0.43, r=-0.22, both P<0.001). (3) Suicidal ideation mediated the relationship between thwarted belongingness and suicidal behavior ( β=0.34, P<0.001) and mediated the relationship between fear of negative evaluation and suicidal behavior ( β=0.11, P<0.001). (4) Compared to the students with lower levels of intolerance of uncertainty, for those who had higher levels of intolerance of uncertainty, thwarted belongingness had a stronger predictive power on suicidal ideation ( β=0.27, P<0.001; β=0.41, P<0.001) and fear of negative evaluation also had a stronger predictive power on suicidal ideation ( β=0.08, P<0.001; β=0.14, P<0.001). Compared to the students with lower levels of meaning in life, for those who had higher levels of meaning in life, fear of negative evaluation had a weaker predictive power on suicidal ideation ( β=0.20, P<0.001; β=0.12, P<0.001). Conclusion:This study provides empirical evidence to the integrated motivational-volitional model of suicidal behavior. Results indicate that effects of perceived stress from interpersonal relations on suicidal ideation are moderated by meaning in life and intolerance of uncertainty. Reducing the perceived stress from interpersonal relations, lessening the level of intolerable of uncertainty, and carrying out intervention programs aiming at meaning in life are potential intervention ways to reduce the suicide risks of university freshmen.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To analyze the relationship between physical appearance perfectionism, negative body self, fear of negative evaluation and social appearance anxiety in female patients with psoriasis. Methods:A total of 251 female patients with psoriasis in Xinhua Hospital Affiliated to Medical College of Shanghai Jiaotong University from June 2019 to June 2020 were selected as the subjects. Physical Appearance Perfectionism Scale (PPAS), Social Appearance Anxiety Scale (SAAS), Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale (BFNES) and Negetive Physical Self Scale (Npss) were used in the survey. The correlation of negative body self and negative evaluation fear between the appearance perfectionism and social appearance anxiety of female psoriasis patients was analyzed. Results:The score of physical appearance perfectionism was 49.42±5.32, the score of social appearance anxiety was 58.72±6.24, the score of fear of negative evaluation was 30.59±7.21 and the score of negative physical self was 29.21±6.24. Pearson correlation analysis showed that there was a significant positive correlation among physical appearance perfectionism, social appearance anxiety, fear of negative evaluation and negative physical self ( r value was 0.402-0.488, P<0.01). The mediating effect of negative physical self between physical appearance perfectionism and social appearance anxiety was 0.164 (95% CI 0.082-0.227), the mediating effect of negative body self between physical appearance perfectionism and social appearance anxiety was 0.152 (95% CI 0.079-0.214) and the chain mediating effect of fear of negative evaluation and negative physical self was 0.067 (95% CI 0.025-0.108). Conclusions:Female patients with psoriasis have a high level of physical appearance perfectionism, which can directly affect their social anxiety, while fear of negative evaluation and negative physical self indirectly affect the correlation between appearance perfectionism and social appearance anxiety. Psychological intervention measures should be taken to reduce their psychological burden on their own appearance defects and carry out social anxiety and fear.

ABSTRACT

This research had the purpose of validating the Negative Fear Evaluation Scale (FNE) in Colombian population. The FNE evaluates the degree in which people experiment fear about the possibility of others judging them negatively. Likewise, this research had the purpose of validating the Social Avoidance and Distress Scale (SAD) that evaluates the subjective distress, the active avoidance or the escape desires that people with social phobia experiment. There were 471 participants of both genders, representing different social classes and educational levels. The sampling procedure was carried out at random, involved several stages and was done by conglomerates. It was found that the SAD scale showed an alpha of 0.85, whereas the FNE showed an alpha 0.66. This result raises the need to analyze reliability problems related to dichotomic inverse items and the educational level of the participants. The study suggests that psychometric evaluation instruments should use Likert scales and avoid the inclusion of reverse items.
