ABSTRACT

Abstract The Five-Factor Model (ffm) of personality predominates in the scientific literature, and the Big Five Inventory (bfi) is one of its main evaluations. Considering the limitations of previous studies, the aim of the present study was to explore the dimensionality of the bfi assessment instrument, to test higherorder factors and to analyze its relations with self-esteem, age, and sex of the participants. A total of 549 university students participated. The results showed adequate psychometric properties for the bfi and for the two-factor model of higher order personality traits. In addition, significant differences were observed by sex in terms of agreeableness and neuroticism, relationships between age, neuroticism, and conscientiousness, as well as relationships between both higher order factors and self-esteem.

ABSTRACT

The five factor model has been established as one of the main approaches in the study of personality. After its emergence, one of the most important aspects to be analyzed has been its relationship with self-esteem, considering the central role that the latest has in the model. In spite of the large empirical support existing about this relationship, the need of a deeper understanding of its theoretical nature has been pointed out. The aim of our work joins the previous research, in analyzing the existence of relationships between personality factors and self-esteem. The sample was 576 university students, between 18- 35 years old. The present findings show that self-esteem is negatively associated with neuroticism, and positively associated with extraversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, openness, and with second-order factors elasticity and plasticity. We conclude that further research that allow a better understanding of the role of self-esteem within the five factor model and theory should be strongly encouraged.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have suggested that some personality characteristics are associated with the onset, prognosis and social function in schizophrenia patients. However few is known about the personality and affective characteristic of genetic high risk group (GHR) for schizophrenia. This study aimed to investigate the personality and the affective characteristic of GHR group for schizophrenia. METHODS: Participants were 54 healthy controls (HC), 26 subjects with GHR for schizophrenia and 28 subjects with first episode psychosis (FEP). We performed three self-report questionnaires; NEO-Personality Inventory-Revised, State and Anger Expression Inventory and Positive Affect and Negative Affect Schedule. RESULTS: The GHR group showed higher score in agreeableness item than the HC (p=0.028). In extraversion item, the FEP group showed significantly lower scores than the HC (p=0.001). The GHR group showed lower scores in neuroticism item compared with FEP group in trend level. The FEP group showed higher trait-anger, lower positive affect and higher negative affect compared with the others. CONCLUSION: The GHR group seem to share certain vulnerable personality and affective characteristics for schizophrenia with the FEP group. On the other hands, the GHR group appeared to be more agreeable than the other groups, which might act as the compensation for other impaired functions.
