ABSTRACT

Abstract This article adopts the perspective of the actor-network theory to understand the role of the actors in the process of social construction of the financial inclusion agenda, considering that agenda-setting can be seen as a continuous process of associations that involves different mediators. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with representatives of the institutions involved in the process of agenda-setting examined, as well as from documentary sources. The dynamics of the process of developing the financial inclusion agenda were analyzed considering the four moments (problematization, interessement, enrolment, and mobilization) presented in the relevant literature. The research found out that the financial inclusion agenda in Brazil is the result of an incremental process, which was attended by a wide range of actors (government, market, developers and scholars, and also international actors) and it was influenced by some non-human elements, among which the Central Bank of Brazil (BCB) stands out as the focal actor of the process.

Abstract This research aims to assess the impact of the Agência Barco (a branch of a bank that operates in a boat) on the financial inclusion of the riverine population of the Marajó island. Empirical research was carried out through direct observation and semi-structured interviews applied to users and employees of the Agência Barco. Lexical and content analyses were then applied in order to identify the elements for the financial inclusion of this population. The categories obtained through this technique were interpreted vis-à-vis a financial inclusion model developed from the existing literature. The research results show that the Agência Barco has managed to supply partial access to financial products and services. However, the lack of basic financial education of the riverine population of the Marajó island has hindered adequate use of the financial services provided, hampering sustainable financial inclusion.

ABSTRACT

Economic development of a nation can be achieved only when all segments of its population comes within the ambit of formal financial services. In this respect government of India and the Reserve Bank of India has taken several initiatives to bring the underprivileged and the weaker sections of the Indian society within the banking fold, the most recent initiative being the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. Although these initiatives have been able to bring a sizeable portion of the population under the banking fold, still a large part of the population is outside the coverage of the formal financial sector and the various economic packages declared by the government from time to time. As such, there arises the need to know the reasons as to why a sizeable part of the population is still outside the coverage of the formal financial sector and government policies. In this context the present study has been carried out to know the causes and effects of financial exclusion amongst the financially excluded population of Guwahati city as identified by Guwahati Municipal Corporation.

ABSTRACT

As the economy matures, it is important for the government to ensure that growth becomes more inclusive. An inclusive financial system facilitates efficient allocation of productive resources and thus can potentially reduce the cost of capital. In addition, use of proper financial services can significantly improve the day to-day management of finances. Financial inclusion ensures delivery of banking services and credit at affordable cost to the various sections of disadvantaged and low income groups. The paper primarily looked to find out the extent and spread of financial inclusion in India. Since the study is based on macro level parameters such as number of bank branches and number of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and availing of banking services by Indians, the secondary data readily available from database of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO),World Bank & other establishments of Indian government were used.We noted that financial exclusion in terms of access to credit from formal institutions is high for small and marginal farmers and some social groups. Driving away rural and urban poverty in India can help in achieving inclusive growth. Financial institutions and government together can bring the most awaited change of almost 100% inclusion.
