ABSTRACT

Objective: To study the chemical constituents of Rabdosia rubescens. Methods: The chemical constituent of R. rubescens was separated and purified by using of various column chromatographic technologies (silica gel, MCI, and ODS column chromatography) as well as HPLC. Structures were elucidated by physicochemical characteristics and spectral data. Results: One new flavanoiel compound was isolated from supercritical fluid extract of R. rubescens, and it was elucidated as 3’-hydroxy-2’,4’- dimethoxy-flav-3-ene (1). Conclusion: Compound 1 is a new flavanoid, named as rubescenane A.

ABSTRACT

Light emitting diode (LED) lights play an important role in the plant physiology and alter the metabolites in a significant manner. Glucosinolates (GSLs), polyphenols, flavonoids and antioxidant properties of Chinese cabbage and kale cultivated in varying LED lights were investigated. Analysis revealed 7 aliphatic, 3 indolyl and 1 aromatic GSLs in Chinese cabbage and kale. The total GSL content ranged from 1.5-19.08 and 1.85-24.87 µmol/g DW, and glucobrassicanapin was the predominant GSL (3) in Chinese cabbage, whereas; sinigrin (3.49 µmol/g DW) was in kale. Blue and red LED lights produced significantly higher amount of GSLs in Chinese cabbage and kale respectively. Results revealed higher amount of total polyphenol (3.845 µg/mL) and total flavanoids (3.939 μg/mL) in Chinese cabbage. Chinese cabbage and kale showed significant antioxidant activities when compare with positive control, and the antioxidant assays were slightly correlated with total GSLs, polyphenols and flavanoids contents. The influence of LED lights on glucobrassicin in Chinese cabbage and kale should be studied extensively, because GSL is the precursor of indole-3-carbinol, a potent anticancer isothiocyanate.

ABSTRACT

This study is to investigate the medicinal value of methanolic extract of the leaves of Musa sapientum var. sylvesteris in Bangladesh. Methods: Several biochemical assays, thin layer chormatogarphy and ultra-violet spectroscopy were used to detect the presence of various types of compounds in this extract. Antioxidant effects were measured by DPPH scavenging assay, total reducing assay and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay. Receptor binding activities and hydrogen peroxide induced hemolysis assay were performed by hemagglutination assay and hemolysis assay using erythrocytes. Disk diffusion assay was performed to show the antibacterial effect of the extract. Results: Methanolic extract of the leaves showed antioxidant and antibacterial activity in vitro. The extract showed hemaglutination inhibition activities and hydrogen peroxide induced hemolysis inhibition activity of human red blood cells. Conclusion:Musa sapientum var. sylvesteris can be an useful medicinal plant.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To study the antidiabetic activity of Gynura procumbens (G. procumbens) used in the traditional management of diabetes in Southern Asia.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>G. procumbens leaves were extracted sequentially with graded percentage of ethanol in water (95%, 75%, 50%, 25% and 0%), and the extracts were tested for antidiabetic activity using acute (7 h), subcutaneous glucose tolerance test and sub-chronic (14 d) test in non-diabetic and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. The extracts were further subjected to phytochemical studies.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>In acute dose (1 g/kg), the extracts significantly lowered fasting blood glucose (FBG) in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats (P<0.05). However, the FBG-lowering effect of the 25% extract compared to the other extracts, was rapid (47% after 2 h) and the highest: 53%, 53% and 60% in the 3rd, 5th, and 7th h, respectively (P<0.05), comparable only to the effect of metformin. Furthermore, the extracts suppressed peak FBG in subcutaneous glucose tolerance test, but only the 0% and 25% extracts, and metformin sustained the decrease until the 90th min (P<0.05). Moreover, in the 14 days study, the 25% extract exerted the highest FBG-lowering effect, namely 49.38% and 65.43% on days 7 and 14, respectively (P<0.05), similar to the effect of metformin (46.26% and 65.42%). Total flavanoid and phenolic contents in the extracts were found to decrease with increase in polarity of extraction solvents. The composition of reference compounds (chlorogenic acid, rutin, astragalin and kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside) followed a similar trend.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>G. procumbens contains antidiabetic principles, most extracted in 25% ethanol. Interaction among active components appears to determine the antidiabetic efficacy, achieved likely by a metformin-like mechanism.</p>

ABSTRACT

Objective: Nyctanthes arbortristis is a common plant in Bangladesh. The objective of our research was to biochemical and biological analysis of the methanolic extract of the dried leaves of Nyctanthesarbortristis found in Bangladesh. Methods: We investigated the presence of polyphenols, flavanoids and other types of compounds by thin layer chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, and UV spectroscopy analysis. We performed antioxidant assay by colorimetric methods. We investigated antibacterial assay by disk diffusion method. Cell surface receptor binding assay was performed by hemagglutination inhibition assay and hemolysis assay. Results: Methanolic extract of the leaves of Nyctanthes arbortristis contains flavanoids and other biologically active compounds. The extract showed antioxidant, peroxide scavenging and total reducing activity. The extract also showed antibacterial activities against several strains of bacteria. It also showed hemaglutination inhibition activities and hydrogen peroxide induced hemolysis inhibition activity in human blood cells. Conclusions: Therefore, Nyctanthes arbortristis may be considered as a plant of various health benefits.

ABSTRACT

Argyreia speciosa (sweet) (Burm.f.) Boj. is an Ayurvedic rasayana plant used as an adaptogen. The present study reports the investigations done on the adaptogenic property of ethanol (EtAS; 100 and 200 mg/kg; po), ethyl acetate (EAAS; 100 and 200 mg/kg; po) fraction and flavanoids such as quercetin and kaempferol (25 mg/kg; po) of the root. Immobilization induced acute stress (AS; 3 days) and chronic stress (CS; 7 days) and swimming induced stress models were used to screen the anti-stress effect of the plant fractions and isolated flavanoids. The tested doses of EtAS and isolated flavanoids were able to produce significant effects in normalizing altered serum biochemical parameters and the severity of ulcer in both AS and CS models. Higher dose of EtAS, quercetin and kaempferol (25 mg/kg; po) were found to be significant in restoring the hypertrophy of adrenal gland and atrophy of spleen and thymus gland only in CS model. Greater swimming time was noted in the mice pretreated with tested doses of flavanoids and EtAS. In addition, levels of adrenal ascorbic acid and cortisol were restored compared to stress control group. EtAS exhibited significant scavenging effect of DPPH, hydroxyl radical and LPO. Thus, EtAS, quercetin and kaempferol are capable of increasing the capacity to tolerate non-specific stress in experimental animals, as evident from restoration of large number of parameters in the stress models studied. Bioactivity of EtAS may be due to the synergetic action of isolated flavanoids. Improvement in stress markers may be due its prolong effect of resistance to stress and partly due to free radical scavenging activity.

@# Objective To investigate the effect of Epimedium flavanoids (EF) on neuro-inflammatory reaction in Alzheimer disease (AD) mice model.Methods β-amyloid1-40 (Aβ1-40) was injected to the right lateral ventricle of 2-month-old male ICR mice to induce AD model. Morris water maze and step-through tests were used to measure the learning and memory ability of mice. The concentrations of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) in the hippocampus were determined by radioimmunoassay. The expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) positive cells (astrocytes) was detected by immunochemistry staining.Results Compared with the sham-operation group, the learning and memory ability decreased (P<0.05, P<0.01), the concentrations of IL-1β and TNF-α in the hippocampus increased (P<0.01) and the expression of astrocytes in the hippocampus elevated (P<0.05) in Aβ1-40 injection model mice. Intragastric administration of EF (100 and 300 mg/kg) for 3 weeks significantly improved the learning and memory ability (P<0.05, P<0.01), decreased IL-1β and TNF-α concentrations in the hippocampus (P<0.05, P<0.01) and inhibited the expression of astrocytes in the hippocampus (P<0.05), compared with Aβ1-40 injection model mice.Conclusion EF can decrease the inflammatory reaction in the brain of mice induced by Aβ.

ABSTRACT

Various kinds of flavanoids such as flavone,flavonol,flavanone,isoflavone,flavanol and so on,have protective effects on the liver injuries,which are induced by chemicals,drugs,immunostimulation,alcohol and hepatic ischemia reperfusion in some degree.These kinds of protection are relevant to the function of flavanoids such as elimination of free radical,resistance of oxidation,resistance of lipid peroxidation,adjustment of immune function and so on.The study of the effect of flavanoids on animal experimental liver injury plays an important role in the development of drugs for prevention and treatment of liver diseases.This article is to summarize the research progress of the effect of flavanoids on experimental liver injury of animals.
