ABSTRACT

Pseudomonas oryzihabitans is frequently found in various sites within hospital settings, including sink drains and respiratory therapy equipment. Although it rarely causes human infections, P. oryzihabitans has recently been considered a potential nosocomial pathogen, especially in immunocompromised hosts. We report our experience of an outbreak of P. oryzihabitans pseudobacteremia, presumably due to faulty aseptic preparation of a saline gauze canister.

ABSTRACT

Flavimonas oryzihabitans is a yellow-pigmented, non-spore forming, gram-negative bacillus mainly found in damp environments such as soil and stagnant water. F. oryzihabitans is an uncommon cause of clinically significant human infection. This organism has been mainly reported to cause infection related to indwelling intravenous catheters, continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis catheters or surgical procedures in immune compromised hosts or cancer patients. We report a case of community-acquired infective endocarditis caused by F. oryzihabitans in a 24-year-old man who had no significant past medical history. He was successfully treated by antimicrobial therapy and mitral valvuloplasty.

ABSTRACT

Flavimonas oryzihabitans is a gram-negative, glucose non-fermentative bacillus, and is rarely reported as a pathogen in human. In recent years, reports of infection due to F. oryzihabitans, especially in immunocompromised patients with indwelling catheter or peritoneal Tenckhoff catheter have increased. We report two cases of F. oryzihabitans peritonitis in patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD).
