ABSTRACT

Purpose: To find out the mean rate of progression (MROP) of visual fields (VF) in patients with primary open?angle glaucoma (POAG) and ocular hypertension (OHT) using FORUM® Glaucoma Workplace. Methods: Two hundred and one eyes of 105 patients were included in this prospective cohort study. Patients with POAG and OHT were recruited, and VF analysis with 24?2 and or 10?2 was done using SITA standard strategy in Zeiss Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer (HFA). All the previous VFs were identified from FORUM software, and the baseline indices were recorded from the first reliable VF analysis. The present VF analysis was compared to the previous one using FORUM software, and the rate of progression (ROP) in VF was obtained by Guided Progression Analysis. Results: MROP of VF in the POAG group was ? 0.085 dB/ year, ranging from ?2.8 to 2.8 dB/year with a standard deviation (SD) of 0.69. In the OHT group, the MROP of VF was ?0.003 dB/year, ranging from ? 0.8 to 0.5 dB/year with an SD of 0.27. The MROP of VF in medically treated eyes with POAG was ?0.14 dB/year with an SD of 0.61 and in surgically treated eyes was ?0.02 dB/year with an SD of 0.78. The overall baseline mean VF index (VFI) was 83.19% and the final mean VFI was 79.80%. There was a statistically significant decrease in the mean VFI value from baseline to the final visit (P?value 0.0005). Conclusion: The mean ROP of VF in the POAG group was ?0.085 dB/year and in the OHT group was ? 0.003 dB/year

ABSTRACT

Discrimination against persons affected by leprosy or Hansen’s disease has deep roots, marginalizing individuals and communities. In September 2019, “Global Forum of People’s Organization on Hansen’s Disease (POs)” was organized in Manila, the Philippines, as a pre-event of the 20th International Leprosy Congress, which was the largest-ever international gathering of persons affected by the disease and led to “the Manila Declaration” to present the collective voice of all the participants. However, how to realize them was not thoroughly discussed during the forum and thus remains an issue for the future. In light of the fact that the second Global Forum is scheduled to be held in conjunction with the 21st International Leprosy Congress in November 2022, this article aims at clarifying what the forum should strive for in order to put the Manila Declaration into action by 1) examining the significance and impact of the first Global Forum, 2) identifying challenges currently faced by the POs from four domains (performance, staff capacity, internal organization, and external relationships), and 3) providing recommendations in three areas (strengthening and networking of POs, promoting their participation in leprosy related activities through effective advocacy, and sustained support by governments and donor agencies for POs).

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The consequences of the Covid-19 epidemic have been catastrophic for Latin America in 2021. This study explores experiences, lessons learned, and practice changes during this critical time in post-graduate medical education in Latin America. Me-thods: A panel of 53 post-graduate medical education leaders from 8 Latin American countries and Canada was invited to participate in the 2021 Latin American Medical Education Leaders Forum to share their experiences, lessons learned, and main educational practice changes given the Covid-19 pandemic scenario. Participants were selected following a snowball technique with the goal of obtaining a diverse group of experts. Small group discussions were conducted by bilingual facilitators based on a semi-structured questionnaire. The plenary session with the main conclusions of each group was recorded and fully transcribed for a thematic analysis using a framework methods approach. Results: Participants ́ profiles included 13 experienced clinician-educators, 19 program directors, and 23 deans or organizational representatives. Seven specific themes emerged. They followed a pattern that went from an initial emotional reaction of surprise to a complex collective response. The responses highlighted the value of adaptability, the application of new digital skills, a renovated residents' protagonism, the strengthening of humanism in medicine, the openness of new perspectives in wellness, and finally, an unresolved challenge of assessment in medical education in a virtual post-pandemic scenario. Conclusion: A diverse panel of medical educators from Latin America and Canada identified changes triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic that could transform postgraduate medical education in the region.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The case study presented, seeks to understand the corporate social responsibility (CSR), analyzing its value chain from the Model of the 31 practices of the supply chain that the World Economic Forum (2015). It is a qualitative research, with a descriptive case study approach. The objective of the work is to observe the impact of international logistics operations in a Mexican exporting SME and to analyze whether its economic significance has had a sustainable social, economic and environmental development. The results indicate a competitive advantage in product differentiation based on Porter and Kramer's (2002) concept of shared value. According to the WEF Model, the archetype is: Liberal humanist, since it emphasizes business value by 65% and weights socio-environmental aspects by 35%. However, impacts on the supply chain must be mitigated if the organization is to be identified as a socially responsible company.

ABSTRACT

Abstract In Brazil, one of the fundamental principles of the Brazilian National Health System is social participation. Through mobilization, indigenous peoples secured the publication of the law establishing the Indigenous Health Subsystem in 1999, structured in 34 Special Indigenous Health Districts. From the beginning, participation instances were organized: Local Councils, District Councils of Indigenous Health (Condisi) and the Condisi Presidents Forum (FPCondisi) This study aims to understand the formal structure and effective configuration of the social participation space of indigenous people in the construction of a differentiated health policy. A qualitative methodology was used with several sources and materials, with documentary analysis of minutes of Condisi Litoral Sul and FPCondisi meetings, legislation and with in-depth interviews with indigenous people and indigenists. The results showed that there are several ways for indigenous people to participate in health policy. It is possible to state that most of the interviewees recognizes Condisi as a space for dialogue between indigenous people and the government, but they also point out the limits of the effectiveness of this and other instances of social control. The silencing of indigenous agendas in formal participation spaces makes these people seek for other ways to lead the construction of a differentiated health policy.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

This article aims at analyzing whether the Solidarity Economy Forum of São José dos Pinhais – Paraná is promoting the strengthening and the consolidation of the Solidarity Economy movement in the aforementioned municipality. The Solidarity Economy Forums are a space and an articulating tool of the civil society which make possible the following activities: the training, information and planning of a joint strategy for intervening in public policies. The research comprises a case study and counted on the participation of the following Forum attendees: solidarity economy undertakings, public administrators and support entities. The secondary data were approached by consulting public domain documents; the Records related to the 15 ordinary meetings of the Forum from 09/2009 to 02/2011. The primary data were gathered through unsystematic observation carried out during the meetings. Descriptive/qualitative procedures were used for dealing with the data. The analyses of the collected data have shown that the undertakings boast a strong presence during the meetings and that marketing has been the pertinent demand for said undertakings. It has been concluded that the solidarity economy undertakings are being strengthened and are players that contribute in building their own story. Nevertheless, those undertakings are still strongly geared toward meeting their immediate needs, such as production flow. It has been verified that the matters related to the public and strategic debate of the Solidarity Economy of the Municipality still lack the proper space in the Forum as proposals of a movement in opposition to the current economic system.

ABSTRACT

The article relates the experiences of a research group which rehearses the design of other maps of the problematique of public education—affirming that change must be collective. The discussions is woven around initiatives that call into question educational policies that impel the advance of research and knowledge production. We aim to construct research processes that prioritize the exploration of the plane of experience as a research priority in education within modern societies and which require learning because they don‘t offer themselves up to understanding right away. Working with research-intervention involves the creation of an attentive openness to the now and the monitoring of ongoing experiments—the processual and temporal aspects of life traversing research processes is what stands out. In this paper, research is seen as accessing the field of forces—the plane of constitution in motion and transformation.

ABSTRACT

Brazilian associations for research in human, social and applied social sciences have long sought ethical aspects regulation compatible with the epistemological, theoretical and methodological specificities of these sciences. Consequently, the Brazilian regulatory system (Research Ethics Committees/CEPs of the National Research Ethics Commission/CONEP) is currently undergoing an important review process. This article presents the positions taken by the National Association of Research and Postgraduate Studies in Psychology - ANPEPP. The article: (1) highlights the origins of the current ethics review model, based on biomedical research; (2) summarizes criticisms recurrent to this model; (3) identifies the directions required for the improvement of the system; and (4) lists the challenges to be overcome in the current process of creating specific regulations for the human and social sciences. The considerations presented highlight two crucial points that challenge the construction of a specific resolution for research ethics in the human and social sciences: (1) the clear characterization of what is meant by 'research in the human and social sciences' - and that would, therefore, have its ethical review regulated from the perspective of the specific resolution for the human and social sciences; and (2) the definition of parameters from which different risk levels in studies can be identified.
