ABSTRACT

@#Introduction: Race estimation of unknown individual is essential in forensic investigation. The resiliency of frontal sinus makes it a potential tool for biological profiling, particularly in cases where fragmented skeleton persists. Geometric morphometrics is an efficient way to characterise shape. However, the use of frontal sinus to identify race of Malaysians is yet to be investigated. This research employed a two-dimensional (2D) geometric morphometric to examine the morphological differences of the frontal sinus among the major races in Malaysia. Methods: Lateral skull radiographs which comprising of 453 adult Malaysian (151 Malays, Chinese and Indian respectively) were used. The 2D landmarks of eight were placed on the digitalized radiographs and 2D geometric morphometric analysis was performed using MorphoJ software. Results: Procrustes ANOVA revealed a significantly different frontal sinus shape (p-value < 0.05) between races. Canonical variate analysis showed significantly different frontal sinus morphology (p-value < 0.05) between Malay and Indian as well as Chinese and Indian. Discriminant function analysis with cross-validation demonstrated a 57.4% accuracy rate. Conclusion: This population-specific study based on frontal sinus of Malaysians using the 2D geometric morphometric, though less reliable, sheds new light on the potential applicability of this method for race estimation purpose.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Assessing whether it is possible screening women with osteoporosis through geometric morphometrics based on panoramic x-ray. Materials and Methods: Leukoderma women, after menopause, 40 years old (or older), with confirmed medical diagnosis of presence, or absence, of osteoporosis through bone densitometry examination. (N = 62). Measurements taken through panoramic X-ray based on geometric morphometrics. All x-rays were taken twice by the same researcher. Procrustes superimposition was assessed through Cartesian coordinates generated from anatomic landmark and semilandmarks. Regression Analysis, Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA), discriminant function and cross validation analysis, and Thin plate spliness in MorphoJ software were carried out. Subsequently, Fluctuating Asymmetry Analysis (FA) was conducted and ANOVA was performed to assess differences in centroid size. Results: Significant values were recorded for mandible shape (p<0.01) through MANOVA. Significant values (P<0.01) were also found through discriminant function analysis between groups of women with, and without, osteoporosis. Fluctuating asymmetry analysis showed significant differences in mandible shape and size between sides (p<0.01). Conclusions: Geometric morphometrics proved to be effective in screening and identifying elderly leukoderma women with, or without, osteoporosis based on panoramic x-rays. This is a promising technique to diagnose or identify patients with some health condition.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: The preserved form of all components of the nerve fiber is a prerequisite for the proper conduction of the nerve impulse. various factors can change the shape of nerve fibers. In everyday practice, qualitative histological analysis is the gold standard for detecting changes in shape. Geometric morphometry is an innovative method that objectively enables the assessment of changes in nerve fibers' shape after local anesthetics action. A total of sixty sciatic nerves were used as material, which was intraneural injected with saline solution in the control group (n=30), and a solution of 1.33 % liposomal bupivacaine (n=30) in the test group. After the animals were sacrificed, nerve samples were taken and histological preparations were made. The preparations were first described and examined using a qualitative histological method, after which digital images were made. The images were entered into the MorphoJ program and processed using the method of geometric morphometry. Qualitative histological examination revealed no differences in nerve fibers after intraneurally applied physiological solution and liposomal bupivacaine. Using the method of geometric morphometry, a statistically significant change in the shape of axons was found after intraneurally applied saline solution and liposomal bupivacaine (p=0.0059). No significant differences in histological changes were found after the qualitative histological analysis of nerve fiber cross-section preparations. A statistically significant change in the shape of nerve fiber axons was observed after geometric morphometric analysis of digital images after intraneural application of saline and liposomal bupivacaine.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To propose a sensitivity test method for geometric correction position deviation of cone-beam CT systems.@*METHODS@#We proposed the definition of center deviation and its derivation. We analyzed the influence of the variation of the three-dimensional spatial center of the steel ball point, the projection center and the size of the steel ball point on the deviation of geometric parameters and the reconstructed image results by calculating the geometric correction parameters based on the Noo analytical method using the FDK reconstruction algorithm for image reconstruction.@*RESULTS@#The radius of the steel ball point was within 3 mm. The deviation of the center of the calibration parameter was within the order of magnitude and negligible. A 10% Gaussian perturbation of a single pixel in the 3D spatial coordinates of the steel ball point produced a deviation of about 3 pixel sizes, while the same Gaussian perturbation of the 2D projection coordinates of the steel ball point produced a deviation of about 2 pixel sizes.@*CONCLUSION@#The geometric correction is more sensitive to the deviation generated by the three-dimensional spatial coordinates of the steel ball point with limited sensitivity to the deviation generated by the two-dimensional projection coordinates of the steel ball point. The deviation sensitivity of a small diameter steel ball point can be ignored.

ABSTRACT

The Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) is often used to calculate the radiation dose during computed tomography (CT) scans. However, the physical calculation process of the model is complicated, the input file structure of the program is complex, and the three-dimensional (3D) display of the geometric model is not supported, so that the researchers cannot establish an accurate CT radiation system model, which affects the accuracy of the dose calculation results. Aiming at these two problems, this study designed a software that visualized CT modeling and automatically generated input files. In terms of model calculation, the theoretical basis was based on the integration of CT modeling improvement schemes of major researchers. For 3D model visualization, LabVIEW was used as the new development platform, constructive solid geometry (CSG) was used as the algorithm principle, and the introduction of editing of MCNP input files was used to visualize CT geometry modeling. Compared with a CT model established by a recent study, the root mean square error between the results simulated by this visual CT modeling software and the actual measurement was smaller. In conclusion, the proposed CT visualization modeling software can not only help researchers to obtain an accurate CT radiation system model, but also provide a new research idea for the geometric modeling visualization method of MCNP.

ABSTRACT

Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems play a very important role in modern medical diagnosis and treatment systems, but their performance is limited by training samples. However, the training samples are affected by factors such as imaging cost, labeling cost and involving patient privacy, resulting in insufficient diversity of training images and difficulty in data obtaining. Therefore, how to efficiently and cost-effectively augment existing medical image datasets has become a research hotspot. In this paper, the research progress on medical image dataset expansion methods is reviewed based on relevant literatures at home and abroad. First, the expansion methods based on geometric transformation and generative adversarial networks are compared and analyzed, and then improvement of the augmentation methods based on generative adversarial networks are emphasized. Finally, some urgent problems in the field of medical image dataset expansion are discussed and the future development trend is prospected.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: Missing data may occur in every scientific studies. Statistical shape analysis involves methods that use geometric information obtained from objects. The most important input to the use of geometric information in statistical shape analysis is landmarks. Missing data in shape analysis occurs when there is a loss of information about landmark cartesian coordinates. The aim of the study is to propose F approach algorithm for estimating missing landmark coordinates and compare the performance of F approach with generally accepted missing data estimation methods, EM algorithm, PCA based methods such as Bayesian PCA, Nonlinear Estimation by Iterative Partial Least Squares PCA, Inverse non-linear PCA, Probabilistic PCA and regression imputation methods. Landmark counts were taken as 3, 6, 9 and sample sizes were taken as 5, 10, 30, 50, 100 in the simulation study. The data are generated based on multivariate normal distribution with positively defined variance-covariance matrices from isotropic models. In simulation study three different simulation scenarios and simulation based real data are considered with 1000 repetations. The best and the most different result in the performance evaluation according to all sample sizes is the Min (F) criteria of the F approach algorithm proposed in the study. In case of three landmarks which is only the proposed F approach and regression assignment method can be applied, Min (F) criteria give best results.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES@#Femoral neck fracture is the most serious osteoporotic fractures that is responsible for high medical costs and high mortality. Femoral neck geometric parameters (FNGPs) are important parameters that reflect the geometrical characteristics of femoral neck, and are closely related to the strength of femoral neck and the risk of fragility fracture. There are differences in the incidence of femoral neck fractures among races. However, whether there is difference in FNGPs among races is unknown. Therefore, this study aims to compare the differences in FNGPs between Chinese and Japanese females.@*METHODS@#This study was a cross-sectional study, in which 3 859 healthy females aged 10-86 (45.7±17.1) years old were recruited from Changsha City of Hunan Province and surrounding areas. The weight and height were measured and recorded, and the body mass index (BMI) was calculated. A dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) bone densitometer was used to measure femoral neck projective bone area (BA) and bone mineral density (BMD). FNGPs were calculated using the BMD and BA, which included the outer diameter (OD), cross-sectional area (CSA), cortical thickness (CT), endocortical diameter (ED), buckling ratio (BR), section modulus (SM), cross-sectional moment of inertia (CSMI), and compression strength index (CSI). The data of FNGPs in Japanese females was collected from literature. These subjects were grouped by 10-year age. The mean and standard deviation of height, weight, BMI, femoral neck BMD, and FNGPs of each group were calculated. The model with the best goodness-of-fit was selected from various mathematical regression models to analyze the distribution trend and the best fitting curve of FNGPs with age. The differences in FNGPs between Chinese and Japanese females were analyzed by using age-corresponding mean fitting curve for paired t-test, and the relative change rates of FNGPs were compared.@*RESULTS@#The mean values of FNGPs were significantly different among different years old healthy females (all P<0.01). The mean values of OD, CSA, CT, SM, and CSMI in femoral neck were high at 30 to 39 years old, and then they were gradually decreased with age. The CSI reached its peak at 20-29 years old, and it was decreased gradually after 30 years old. ED and BR were at a low level before 40 years old, they were gradually increased after 40 years old, and reached the maximum average value at 80-86 years old. The variations in FNGPs with age were fitted with the best goodness-of-fit by applying the cubic regression model and the determination coefficients of regression equations (R2: 0.062-0.404) were significant (all P<0.01). The distribution trend of FNGPs with age varied with the indices, among which CSA, CT, SM, CSMI and CSI were increased with age before 35 years old, and then they were decreased with age; BR was at a low level in the early stage, and then it was increased with age after about 40 years. There were significant differences in the fitting curves of FNGPs related to age between Chinese and Japanese females (all P<0.01). The fitting curves of OD, ED, BR and SM in Chinese females were significantly higher than those in Japanese females (all P<0.01), while those of CSA and CT in Chinese females were significantly lower than those in Japanese females (all P<0.01). Before the age of 50, the curves of CSMI and CSI of Chinese females were significantly higher than those of Japanese females (all P<0.01), while after the age of 60 the situation was reversed (all P<0.01). Except for SM and CSI, there were significant differences in the rate of OD, CSA, CT, ED, BR and CSMI with age (all P<0.01). By the age of 80 years old, the rates of change in OD, ED, and BR with the age in Chinese females were increased by 0.91%,3.94%, and 47.5%, respectively, while those in Japanese females were increased by 8.57%, 15.8% and 85.3%, respectively;the rates of change of CSA, CT, and CSMI with the age in Chinese females were declined 28.0%, 29.6%, and 25.2%, respectively, while those in Japanese females were declined 29.9%, 36.2%, and 10.9%, respectively. There were significant difference in the rates of change in FNGPs with the age between Chinese and Japanese females (all P<0.01).@*CONCLUSIONS@#The study reveals the variation of FNGPs with age in Chinese, and confirms that there are racial differences in FNGPs between Chinese and Japanese females, which may be one of the important reasons for the difference in the incidence of femoral neck fracture between Chinese and Japanese females.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To investigate the serum levels of anti-measles antibody among residents in Zhejiang Province in 2018, so as to provide insights into measles control.@*Methods@#Permanent residents aged 0 to 59 years were recruited using the stratified multistage random sampling method in Zhejiang Province in 2018, and subjects' demographic features, medical history of measles and history of immunization with measles-containing vaccine (MCV) were collected using a questionnaire survey. The serum level of anti-measles IgG antibody was detected, and the geometric mean concentration (GMC) of anti-measles IgG antibody was estimated. The seroprevalence, protective rate and GMC of anti-measles IgG antibody were compared among residents at different age groups and regions.@*Results@#A total of 4 189 residents were enrolled, including 1 939 males and 2 250 females, with a male to female ratio of 1∶1.16. There were 3 858 residents positive for anti-measles IgG antibody, with seroprevalence of 92.10%, and there were 2 072 residents with protective antibodies against measles, with a protective rate of 49.46%. The median GMC of anti-measles IgG antibody was 798.33 (interquartile range, 1 024.06) mIU/mL, and the protective rate of anti-measles IgG antibody appeared a tendency towards a decline with age ( χ2trend=18.067, P<0.001 ). There were significant differences in the seroprevalence ( χ2=45.090, P<0.001 ), protective rate ( χ2=57.432, P<0.001 ) and GMC of anti-measles IgG antibody (χ2=88.624, P<0.001 ) among residents at different regions, with the lowest seroprevalence of anti-measles IgG antibody in Ningbo City ( 85.19% ), the lowest antibody-protective rate (38.98%) and the lowest GMC [632.89 ( 909.04 ) mIU/mL] in Zhoushan City, the highest seroprevalence ( 95.16% ), antibody-protective rate (58.48%) and GMC [1 035.84 ( 1 301.77 ) mIU/mL] in Huzhou City.@*Conclusions@# The protective rate of anti-measles antibody was low and appeared a tendency towards a decline among residents in Zhejiang Province in 2018. There was a region-specific serum level of anti-measles antibody in Zhejiang Province in 2018.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: In 2004, Xiphopenaeus kroyeri, one of major species in commercial fisheries in Brazil was included in the list of brazilian overfished species and, in 2006, two cryptic species were identified in the Atlantic Ocean by molecular approaches: Xiphopenaeus sp. I and II. In 2019, Carvalho-Batista et al. described both Xiphopenaeus sp. I and Xiphopenaeus sp. II and these species were named X. kroyeri and X. dincao, respectively. This study aimed at performing morphometric analysis in order to identify potential fishing stocks of X. kroyeri sensu strictum along Brazilian coast. The results obtained separate Caravelas, Atafona and Balneário Camboriú from all the other populations studied and showed three groups: Ubatuba, Nova Almeida; Ubatuba, Cananéia; Ubatuba, Santos. These results indicate that the maritime limits practiced in closed seasons along Brazil are embracing the detected morphometric stock boundaries observed for Xiphopenaeus kroyeris.s.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Despite their importance in swimming performance and individual fitness, body shape and size variations in response to water flow velocity remain unknown for most migratory freshwater fishes in the Neotropics. Objective: Test the hypothesis of phenotypic variation in the size and body shape of two species of freshwater fishes that encounter changes in water velocity across their migrations in two rivers that belong to a single Neotropical basin. Methods: Landmark-based geometric morphometrics was used to study variations in body size and shape for the fish species Curimata mivartii and Pimelodus grosskopfii in lotic and lentic habitats of the Colombian Magdalena-Cauca Basin. Results: Individuals of C. mivartii from two lotic habitats were similar in size and both were significantly bigger than those from lentic habitats, whereas individuals of P. grosskopfii were similar in size in both habitats. Both species showed more streamlined bodies in lotic habitats and deeper body shapes in lentic habitats. Conclusions: Both species exhibit phenotypic changes in body shape concordant with previous predictions on morphological variations of fishes. This information is relevant to predict changes in response to environmental heterogeneity, especially those induced by anthropogenic activities that change the water velocity in the river.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The sea star odontophore is the structure positioned between the paired oral ossicles, with which they articulate through proximal and distal processes. The internal anatomy structures may be used as taxonomic characters for a precise differentiation between species, so it is necessary to describe the structures variation throughout growth. Objective: To describe the odontophore shape and variation of Luidia superba A. H. Clark, 1917 from specimens of the Gulf of California deposited in the Echinoderm National Collection, ICML UNAM. Methods: A total of 735 specimens were examined to describe the external characters, from which 55 selected specimens, within a range of R = 14 mm and R = 210 mm, were dissected to extract the odontophores and analyzed with geometric morphometrics. Results: Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) images of the odontophores showing the variations in shape throughout growth are presented. Differences in shape between size groups were confirmed with a Canonical Variables Analysis (P < 0.05). Conclusions: There are three main groups in this size ranges where specialization of the stereom can be observed through the ontogenetic series; the variation in shape of the odontophore shown here is a precedent for the use of internal anatomy as new taxonomic characters of identification.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The goal of this work was to present, through computation fluid dynamics (CFD), two methods used in the conceptual and physical representation of vegetation in aquatic environments: the porous media approach and the simplified geometric elements. Three case studies, including a floating wetland and patches of vegetation, exemplify how the methods are applied, showing their advantages and disadvantages. At the geometry and meshing stage, the porous media approach shows to be simpler, faster, and more practical than the simplified geometric elements. However, in the equation modeling, the porous media approach is not able to capture the mixing processes inside the vegetation, while the simplified geometric elements method can capture those processes.

ABSTRACT

In order to suppress the geometrical artifacts caused by random jitter in ray source scanning, and to achieve flexible ray source scanning trajectory and meet the requirements of task-driven scanning imaging, a method of free trajectory cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) reconstruction is proposed in this paper. This method proposed a geometric calibration method of two-dimensional plane. Based on this method, the geometric calibration phantom and the imaging object could be simultaneously imaged. Then, the geometric parameters could be obtained by online calibration method, and then combined with the geometric parameters, the alternating direction multiplier method (ADMM) was used for image iterative reconstruction. Experimental results showed that this method obtained high quality reconstruction image with high contrast and clear feature edge. The root mean square errors (RMSE) of the simulation results were rather small, and the structural similarity (SSIM) values were all above 0.99. The experimental results showed that it had lower image information entropy (IE) and higher contrast noise ratio (CNR). This method provides some practical value for CBCT to realize trajectory freedom and obtain high quality reconstructed image.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the price formation method and price standard in the big data diagnosis-intervention packet. Methods:The expenditure data and income data of 95 medical institutions in Shanghai in 2018 were used for analysis, including 33 municipal hospitals and 62 district hospitals. After using the standardized data of disease score, the medical institutions in the region were divided into four quadrants with the regional average of unit price per index and cost per index as the coordinate axis. The best quadrant of income and cost was found out, namely the high quality range. The geometric center was calculated in the high quality range, and the unit price per index of the geometric center was taken as the cost standard. Results:For the district hospitals, there were 20 hospitals in the first quadrant, 8 in the second quadrant, 24 in the third quadrant and 10 in the fourth quadrant; For the municipal hospitals, there were 7 hospitals in the first quadrant, 5 in the second quadrant, 12 in the third quadrant and 9 in the fourth quadrant. In the third quadrant, the average income and cost of medical institutions were lower than the average of the city, and the income could cover the cost. The third quadrant was the high quality range. The unit price per index of the third quadrant geometric center of district hospitals was 14 115.4 yuan, and that in municipal hospitals was 15 559.1 yuan, which could be used as the corresponding cost standard. Conclusions:The price discovery mechanism based on objective data and high-quality interval geometric center method can remove the impact of unreasonable charges or unreasonable behavior on medical income, and reflect the guidance of the standard price of medical insurance payment.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: The Mid-Domain Effect (MDE) and the Rapoport (RE) effect are two biogeographical theories that make predictions about biogeogaphic patterns. MDE predicts higher richness in the central portions of a gradient if it is within a bounded domain. RE predicts a positive relation between altitude and species range size along an altitudinal gradient. Our aim was to document the distribution of spider species richness along an altitudinal gradient in the Brazilian Amazon, and to test the influence of MDE and RE on the diversity patterns. Our study was conducted at the Pico da Neblina (Amazonas state, Brazil), and we sampled spiders at six different altitudes using two methods: nocturnal hand sampling and a beating tray. We obtained 3,140 adult spiders from 39 families, sorted to 529 species/morphospecies. Richness declined continuously with an altitude increase, but the fit with the MDE richness estimates was very weak and was not significant. Range size was not related to altitude, i. e., no RE. Finally, the abundance distribution within each species range varied more specifically, which prevented the occurrence of a RE at the community level. The influence of MDE was extremely low, a consequence of our community characteristics, formed mostly by small range size species. Short and medium range species were located at all altitudes, preventing a significant relation between range size and altitude. The distribution of abundance within a species range varied specifically and do not support a RE hypothesis.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: This study provides an updated vision of the study of Geometric Morphometrics and its most recent application in ecology and evolutionary biology, covering a wide variation in methodology occurring in the last 5 years since the first version published in the International Journal of Morphology. Geometric Morphometrics is a tool that allows evaluating morphological variations with underlying factors, with a higher sensitivity than traditional morphology, so that minimum changes of morphological variation can be detected. Therefore, it has turned into an outstanding tool to answer questions of comparative biology focused on anatomic characters. At the beginning, it was a tool mainly used to answer taxonomic questions and for differentiation at individual, population or species level. However, in the last years, the number of questions and problematic on which it is applied, has diversified considerably, turning it into a very accurate tool to answer questions of morphological variation in ecologic and evolutionary contexts. Almost half a decade has elapsed since the last revision of the method, so this work is intended to analyze the methodological changes and the new approaches used in Geometric Morphometrics, including a brief introductory guideline to these new methods, their uses and applications.
