ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: The face is the most important factor affecting the physical appearance of a person. In facial aesthetics, there is a specific mathematical proportion, which is called golden proportion, used to measure and analyse facial aesthetic qualities in population. Objectives: The aim of this study was to measure the facial soft tissue proportions which would help to constitute a standard for facial beauty and diagnose facial differences and anomalies and to compare these proportions to the golden proportion. Methods: One hundred and thirty-three (133) Turkish patients 18-40 years of age (61 females, 72 males) were involved in the study. Analysis of the photographs was performed by the same physician, and a software programme was used (NIH Image, version 1.62). Facial proportions were measured and differences from the golden proportions were recorded and grouped as normal (1.6-1.699), short (<1.6) and long (>1.699). Results: According to the facial analysis results, the trichion-gnathion/right zygoma-left zygoma was assessed: 33.1% of the patients were in normal facial morphology, 36.8% were in long facial morphology and 30.1% were in short facial morphology, according to this proportion. The trichion-gnathion/right zygoma-left zygoma proportion was significantly higher in males than females (p < 0.001). Statistically significant difference was noted in gender groups, according to the trichion-gnathion/right zygoma-left zygoma and the right lateral canthus-left lateral canthus/right cheilion-left cheilion proportions (p = 0.001, p = 0.028). Conclusion: Facial proportion assessments in relation to the golden proportion showed that a statistically significant difference was observed between gender groups. Long facial morphology was observed more in males (51.4%); normal (41%) and short (39.3%) facial morphology were more common in females. The measurements and proportions for facial balance in our study population showed that the facial width and height proportions deviated from the golden proportion.


Resumo Introdução: A face é o aspecto mais importante da aparência física de uma pessoa. Na estética facial, existe uma proporção matemática específica, chamada de proporção áurea. A proporção áurea é usada para medir e analisar as qualidades estéticas da face na população. Objetivo: Medir as proporções dos tecidos moles faciais que contribuem para o padrão da beleza facial, auxiliar a percepção e o diagnóstico das diferenças e anomalias faciais e comparar essas proporções com a proporção áurea. Método: Foram incluídos no estudo 133 pacientes turcos com 18 a 40 anos (61 mulheres, 72 homens). A análise das fotografias foi realizada pelo mesmo médico e um programa de software foi usado (NIH Image, versão 1.62). As proporções faciais foram medidas e as diferenças das proporções áureas foram registradas e agrupadas como normais (1,6-1,699), curtas (< 1,6) e longas (> 1,699). Resultados: De acordo com os resultados da análise facial, avaliou-se a proporção do tríquion-gnátio/zigoma direito-zigoma esquerdo e 33,1% dos pacientes apresentaram morfologia facial normal, enquanto 36,8% tinham morfologia facial longa e 30,1% morfologia facial curta, segundo essa proporção. A proporção do tríquion-gnátio/zigoma direito-zigoma esquerdo foi significantemente maior em homens do que em mulheres (p < 0,001). Uma diferença estatisticamente significante foi observada entre os sexos, de acordo com a proporção do tríquion-gnátio/zigoma direito-zigoma esquerdo e do canto lateral direito-canto lateral esquerdo/ângulo cantal direito- ângulo cantal esquerdo (p = 0,001, p = 0,028). Conclusão: A avaliação da proporção facial em relação à proporção áurea mostrou que houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre os sexos. A morfologia facial longa foi mais observada no sexo masculino (51,4%), a morfologia facial normal (41%) e a curta (39,3%) foram mais comuns no sexo feminino. As medidas e proporções para o equilíbrio facial em nossa população estudada mostraram que as proporções de largura e altura faciais se desviaram da proporção áurea.

ABSTRACT

Aim:The purpose of this study was to comparatively evaluate the validity of Golden Proportion, Recurring Esthetic Dental (RED) proportion and Golden Percentage in maxillary anterior teeth in population of Himachal Pradesh.Methods and Materials:Dentulous stone casts of maxillary arch were made of the subjects who met the inclusion criteria. Conditions for inclusion criteria included that the individuals:1) should be of Himachaliorigin with agreeable smiles 2) have well aligned anterior dentition 3) should be between age group of 20-40 years Total of 200 students representing Himachal Pradesh population were included. Measurements were done for the spaces in the grids using the digital caliper. Results:1)The Golden Proportion ratio of 1.3 and 1.4 were more commonly observed in 27.5% and 40% respectively than 1.618 which was observed in 5.5% under study of the population. 2)A Paired sample t-test showed there was no significant gender based difference in Lateral/Central incisor Red Proportion.(P-value>0.05) except for the Canine/Lateral Red Proportion. (P-value<0.05). 3)The Golden Percentage for males in central and lateral incisors and canine was 22.48%, 15.96% and 11.08% respectively. The mean value for females in central and lateral incisors and canine was 22.72%, 16.25% and 10.97% respectively. Conclusions:Golden percentage could be used for aesthetic correction and was found to be more applicable in the population included in this study. Golden percentage could be used for aesthetic correction and are more applicable to natural dentition in the population of Himachal Pradesh.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This research is to investigate factors that affect dental aesthetics and analyze whether individual perception affects and difference of genders affects the esthetic factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy dental students of Chonnam University aged from 25 to 35 years old without periodontal problems were included. Maxillary dental cast for participants were made, and standardized photo was taken with a digital camera. Maximum visual width and the position of gingival zenith of maxillary anterior teeth and maximum height of the maxillary central incisors were measured by a measurement program and the shape of central incisor was categorized. Questionnaire was conducted to evaluate esthetic perception. SPSS program was used to perform statistical analysis. RESULTS: The average visual width ratio of right maxillary anteriors was 1.38:1:0.78 and 1.41:1:0.81 for the left which differ from the golden ratio. The width to height ratio for right and left central incisor was 0.84 and 0.83 respectively. The gingival zenith position was determined to be: mostly, central incisors and canines were located in the distal side, lateral incisors were located in the center. The visual width ratio of right maxillary anterior teeth, ratio of width to height of central incisor, gingival zenith position, crown morphology and amounts of gingival exposure upon smiling were not significantly different between genders, and facial patterns and these dental esthetic factors were not related to aesthetic perception. CONCLUSION: Even though participants had the visual width ratio of maxillary anteriors or ideal width to ideal height of central incisors that did not agree with the golden ratio, they had high satisfaction for dental esthetics. Esthetic perception depends more on subjective judgements of participants than objective indices.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The present study aimed to explore the existence of golden proportion (GP) between the widths of maxillary anterior teeth and golden standard (GS) for width to height ratio of maxillary central incisor in individuals with attractive and non-attractive smiles. Material and Methods: A total 82 females were recruited and divided into 2 groups: attractive smile (n=41) and non-attractive smile (n=41). Frontal photographs were taken, scanned, and saved in a personal computer. The apparent mesiodistal width of each anterior tooth was measured. The data were analyzed using the appropriate statistical tests at a P-value of 0.05). Conclusion: Frequency of the golden proportion was very low among the study population. Smile attractiveness was not greatly related to the proportions between the teeth. (AU)


Objetivo: O presente estudo teve como objetivo explorar a existência de proporção áurea (GP) entre as larguras dos dentes anteriores superiores e padrão-ouro (GS) para a relação largura-altura do incisivo central superior em indivíduos com sorrisos atraentes e não atraentes. Material e Métodos: Foram recrutadas 82 mulheres, divididas em 2 grupos: sorriso atraente (n = 41) e sorriso não atraente (n = 41). Fotografias frontais foram tiradas, digitalizadas e salvas em um computador pessoal. A largura aparente mesiodistal de cada dente anterior foi medida. Os dados foram analisados por meio dos testes estatísticos apropriados, com valor de p 0,05). Conclusão: A frequência da proporção áurea foi muito baixa na população estudada. Atratividade de sorriso não foi fortemente relacionada com as proporções entre os dentes. (AU)

ABSTRACT

Aim: This study aimed to investigate the existence of the golden proportion, recurring esthetic dental (RED) proportion and golden percentage between the frontal view widths of the maxillary anterior natural dentition among students of Indian origin by the aid of digital photography. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted with 80 dental students (41 female and 39 male), with ages ranging from 20 to 23 years. Students whose natural smile did not develop any visual tension with regard to the study’s and their own criteria were selected as having an esthetic smile. Photographs were taken, and the mesiodistal widths of six maxillary anterior teeth were measured digitally using software. Once the measurements were recorded three different theories of proportion were applied and statistical analysis was done. Results: The golden proportion, i.e., 62% RED proportion and golden percentage were not observed in the subjects. According to the subjects evaluated, the average width of the maxillary lateral incisor was 72% of the frontal view width of the central incisor. The average width of the canine was 84% of the frontal view width of the lateral incisor. Conclusion: The golden proportion and RED proportion were not observed in the natural smiles of subjects who were deemed to have an esthetic smile. The values proposed for the golden percentage theory were not observed in subjects with an esthetic smile. Average frontal view percentage widths of the maxillary anterior dentition exist and can be useful in predicting naturally occurring widths in smiles deemed to be esthetic in a specific population.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of changes in the horizontal plane angle on the mesiodistal width ratios of the maxillary anterior teeth during the acquisition of frontal view photographs, derive these ratios for Korean adults on the basis of the data obtained, and analyze them using the Golden Proportion as a reference. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In experiment I, 30 plaster casts were mounted on an articulator and positioned on the angle-measuring device with a center setting of 0°. The device was rotated to 10° in 1° increments in a counterclockwise direction. At each angle, photographs were obtained and analyzed. Experiment II was based on 60 patients who visited the Department of Prosthodontics at Kyungpook National University Dental Hospital from February 2012 to February 2015. The patients were divided into three groups [Male (M), Female (F), Total (M + F)]. Frontal views were obtained for all groups and analyzed. RESULTS: From 1° to 10°, the relative mesiodistal width ratios for the maxillary anterior teeth showed no significant differences from those at 0°. In all three groups, the relative width ratio of the maxillary central incisor was smaller than that specified in the Golden Proportion; the opposite was true for the canine. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that the mesiodistal width ratios of the maxillary anterior teeth do not follow the Golden Proportion in Korean adults, and that a change in the horizontal plane angle from 1° to 10° during frontal photography does not affect these ratios.

Introdução: o conceito inicial de beleza remete a um conjunto que engloba harmonia e equilíbrio das proporções faciais estabelecidas pelas estruturas esqueléticas, dentárias e de tecidos moles. Objetivo: o objetivo deste estudo foi analisara proporção divina em radiografias cefalométricas laterais de 93 indivíduos brasileiros adultos, acima de 18 anos, de ambos os gêneros, com classes I, II e III esqueléticas, não submetidos a tratamento ortodôntico, por meio do software de cefalometria Aurea Ceph. Métodos: para análise estatística, foi aplicada a análise de variância ANOVA, teste Tukey e T de Studentem nível de significância de 5 porcento. Resultados: das sete razões estudadas, quando se avaliou as classes, evidenciou-se diferença estatisticamente significante entre a relação (N-Ena/V1S-DM16) nas classes I e III eas relações (A-Pog/V1-C1MS e A-Pog/V1S-MD16) nas classes II e III. Quando se comparou as razões nas diferentes classes em relação ao número áureo (1 618) houve diferença estatisticamente significante na classe I para as razões (N-Ena/V1S-DM16, V1S-C1MS/C1MS-DM16 e Ena-Me/AB); na classe II para as razões (A-Pog/V1-C1MS e A-Pog/V1S-MD16); e na classe III para as razões (N-Ena/V1S-DM16, Ena-Enp/V1S-C1MS, V1S-C1MS/C1MS-DM16 e Ena-Me/AB). Conclusões: de acordo com a metodologia empregada e os resultados obtidos, concluiu-se que das sete razões analisadas, a classe I apresentou três razões divinas, a classe II duas e a classe III quatro. O grupo classe II apresentou razões divinas com componente dentário e medidas verticais, sugerindo que a magnitude do erro sagital é importante no conceito da estética facial(AU)

Objetivo: el objetivo de este estudio fue analizar la divina proporción en las radiografías cefalométricas de 93 individuos brasileños adultos, de 18 años, de uno y otro géneros, con las clases I, II y III del esqueleto, y no sometidos a un tratamiento de ortodoncia por medio de software de cefalometría Áurea Ceph". Métodos: el análisis estadístico se aplicó al análisis de varianza ANOVA, prueba de Tukey y prueba t de Student. El nivel de significación fue de 5 por ciento. Introduction: the original concept of beauty refers to a set of harmony and balance features determined by bone, dental and soft tissue. Objective: the purpose of this study was to analyze divine proportion as reflected on cephalometric radiographs of 93 Brazilian subjects of both sexes aged 18 with skeletal classes I, II and III, not undergoing orthodontic treatment. The analysis was based on cephalometric software Aurea Ceph. Methods: statistical analysis was performed with ANOVA, Tukey's test and Student's t test. The significance level was 5 percent. Results: the seven ratios studied showed a statistically significant difference between proportions when comparing (N-Ena/V1S-DM16) classes I and III, and (A-Pog/V1-C1MS, A-Pog/V1S-MD16) classes II and III. When proportions in the different classes were compared with the golden number (1 618), a statistically significant difference was found in class I for (N-Ena/V1S-DM16, V1S-C1MS/C1MS-DM16, Ena-Me/AB), in class II for (A-Pog/V1-C1MS, A-Pog/V1S-MD16) and in class III for (N-Ena/V1S-DM16, Ena-Enp/V1S-C1MS, V1S-C1MS/C1MS-DM16, Ena-Me/AB). Conclusions: based on the methodology used and the results obtained, it was concluded that in seven of the ratios presented, the class with three golden ratios was found in two and four, class II to class III. The class II group were golden ratios with a dental and horizontal component, suggesting that the magnitude of the error is relevant to the concept of sagittal facial aesthetics. ABSTRACT

Este trabalho teve por finalidade avaliar a presença e a frequência de Proporções Áureas na face de jovens brasileiros, leucodermas, portadores de oclusão normal segundo a classificação de Andrews (1972), sem tratamento ortodôntico prévio, por meio de fotografias padronizadas na posição natural de cabeça, em norma lateral e frontal. A amostra constituiu-se de 56 indivíduos, sendo 21 do gênero masculino e 35 do gênero feminino entre 12 e 21 anos, com idade média de 16,1 anos. Após tratamento estatístico dos resultados, encontrou-se um universo de 276 pares de medidas em Proporção Áurea. Considerou-se neste estudo somente os 53 pares de medidas que estavam em Proporção Áurea com resultados acima de 60%, sendo 30 pares nas medidas horizontais (fotografias frontais), 8 pares nas medidas verticais (fotografias laterais) e 15 pares nas medidas horizontais com verticais (fotografias frontais com laterais).


This study has the purpose of evaluate the presence and frequency of the Golden Proportion on faces of young Brazilians with normal occlusion according to Andrews (1972) classification, and no previous orthodontic treatment. The assessment was carried out through standardized lateral and frontal facial photographs in natural head. The sample was composed by 56 young students (21 male and 35 female) with age between 12 and 21 years old (average age 16.1 years). After submitting the results to statistical analysis, this research has found 276 pairs of measures in Golden Proportion. In the present study were considered just the 53 pairs of measures with Golden Proportion over 60% being: 30 pairs of horizontal measures (frontal photographs), 8 pairs of vertical measures (lateral photographs), and 15 pairs of horizontal X vertical measures (frontal with lateral photographs).

ABSTRACT

The esthetic aspect of complete denture construction is increasingly occupying an important role in prosthodontics. Denture patients desire a brand of denture esthetics closely paralleling the ideal esthetic values of the third decade of life. Many pre-extraction records will guide selection of appropriate tooth mold for each individual. These include diagnostic casts, photographs, roentgenograms, extracted teeth etc. When no pre-extraction records are available; it is difficult to select an appropriate tooth mold that can reestablish the naturalness of the individual patient. In such a scenario, various facial measurements and proportions aid in the selection of appropriate artificial tooth dimensions. The “Golden proportion”, one of the building blocks of beauty, is one such guideline that can be applied to the profession of dentistry with assured success. The aim of present study is to find out which of the facial measurements are in golden ratio with anterior teeth and that can be used for artificial teeth selection

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the existence of golden proportion between the widths of the maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth in Indian population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The clinical tooth width measurements were recorded with the digital vernier calipers on 576 patients of both sexes in the age group of 21 - 30 years. Flexible ruler was used to determine the width of maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth on the patients by the same operator. The data obtained was statistically analyzed using paired student t-test (alpha=.05). RESULTS: The golden proportion was not found between the width of the right central and lateral incisors in 53% of women and 47% of men. The results revealed the golden percentage was rather inconstant in terms of relative tooth width. CONCLUSION: The golden proportion is an inappropriate method to relate the successive widths of the maxillary anterior teeth in Indian population.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: Even though the constant relation of golden proportion and inner canthal distance (ICD) with the width of the maxillary central incisor (CIW) has been found in European population, it may not be applied to Indian population as we differ from Europeans racially and genetically. Hence, this study was carried out with the objectives of determining if these parameters are applicable to our population also. Materials and Methods: Three hundred south Indian subjects between 18 and 26 years of age, free from facial and dental deformities were examined. Inner canthus of each eye was used as soft tissue landmark. The maxillary central incisors were measured at the contact point area with the help of digital vernier caliper. The CIW was also calculated using golden proportion ratio to obtain the calculated central incisor width. A comparison was made with measured width. Statistical analyses were done to identify any significant difference using "Z" tests. Pearson's Correlation Coefficient test was used to evaluate the measured and the calculated width of the central incisor. Results: ICD and the width of two maxillary incisors were in golden proportion in south Indian population. Also, ICD when multiplied by a decreasing function value of the golden proportion and divided by 2 is a reliable predictor of determining CIW. Conclusion: As in the European population, the ICD and the golden proportion are reliable predictors for determining the width of the maxillary central incisors in the south Indian population also.

ABSTRACT

Atualmente, os implantes bucais são parte importante na reabilitação oral, sendo que cada vez mais pacientes e profissionais optam por essa modalidade de tratamento. A interdisciplinaridade permite que as diversas áreas da Odontologia, dentro de uma mesma filosofia, trabalhem e alcancem os objetivos desejados. O presente trabalho relata um caso clínico no qual, por meio de um planejamento detalhado e integrado das áreas da Dentística, Prótese e Implantodontia, foi possível reabilitar o paciente, devolvendo função e estética, seguindo a grade de proporção dourada.


Currently, oral implants are an important part on oral rehabilitation. Nowadays, more and more patients and professionals opt for this kind of treatment. Interdisciplinarity, guided by the use of a common philosophy, facilitates the achievement of the goals set by the professionals from many areas in dentistry. This article describes a clinical case in which it was possible to rehabilitate the patient and restore function and aesthetics by means of a detailed treatment plan that involved dentistry, prosthesis and implantology, and that followed the golden proportion scale.
