ABSTRACT

Background: Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances. Stress level in all aspects of life is growing at an exponential rate but stress level in students, especially MBBS students is alarming. Objective: To find out the level of stress and relieving methods used by medical students before examination. Material and Methods: Observational, Cross sectional study was conducted on 600 medical students using questionnaire. Responses of the students were recorded on Likert’s scale just after the examination. Data was tabulated and analyzed statistically. Results: The mean age of 600 medical students were 20.1±0.9. 143(23.8%) students always felt stressed, 161(26.8%) often, 211(35.2%) sometimes, 37(6.2%) rarely and 48(8%) never felt stressed before examination. 252(42%) reported that this level of stress did not affect their performance in examination while decrease in performance was reported by 198(33%). 150(25%) said that their performance was improved during examination due to stress. 145(24.2%) felt no anxiety during examination, 432(72%) felt healthy anxiety and 23(3.8%) felt unhealthy anxiety level. Conclusion: Majority of the medical students experiences some level of anxiety during exams and used various coping mechanisms to deal with stress. Although some degree of stress is accepted as a normal part of medical training and can be a motivator for some individuals, not all students find the stress manageable.

ABSTRACT

Background: Dengue fever (DF) and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) are important arthropod borne viral diseases. Dengue in India has dramatically expanded over the last few decades, with rapidly changing epidemiology. Dengue is emerging as major public health concern in northeast India and spreading with increased morbidity. Objective:This study was carried out to determine the seroprevalence of Dengue infection among patients attending in Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital, Barpeta, Assam during the period 2013-2016. Methods: A retrospective study was done from the year 2013 to 2016. A total of 340 serum samples received in the department of microbiology FAAMCH, were tested for the confirmation of suspected cases of dengue. Dengue NS1 antigen and Dengue IgM antibody ELISA tests were performed for the confirmation of dengue cases. We estimated the incidence by applying age, sex and season adjusted dengue positivity. Results: Out of 340 samples tested, 68 were positive either by NS1 antigen or for IgM antibody ELISA tests. These comprised all age groups of both sexes with higher incidence of cases in young males aged 26– 60 years. Conclusion: From this study, it is apparent that dengue surveillance and control should be enhanced by wider use of laboratory testing to confirm dengue as a cause of fever of unknown origin, especially during the local dengue transmission season.

ABSTRACT

Background: Subclinical hypothyroidism occurs due to an under functioning thyroid gland and presents with varied symptoms and signs. Thyroid disorders are common in Indian population and the prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism is high. Objective: This study intended to assess the clinical profile of patients presenting with subclinical hypothyroidism. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective study that analyzed the medical records of adult patients diagnosed with subclinical hypothyroidism for a period of three years. Results: 71 patients within the age range of 18 years to 77 years were diagnosed with subclinical hypothyroidism. Among these 53 (75%) patients had various clinical symptoms. Body pains were the most common symptom (38 %) followed by weight gain(27%) and tiredness (20%). A significant number of patients were obese (25%). Enlarged thyroid(14%) and dyslipidemia (25%) were also recorded. 63 (75%) patients were initiated on low dose levothyroxine. Conclusion: Patients with subclinical hypothyroidism present with varied non-specific clinical symptoms. Treatment with low dose levothyroxine resulted in lowering of serum TSH to normal range and relief of symptoms
