ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Latin American governments have given an important boost to the mining sector in their territories, in order to attract foreign investment. The article exposes the findings of a documentary review that sought to identify and to describe territorial implications that, within the framework of a neoliberal model, has brought with it the implementation and strengthening of large-scale mining in Latin America. From the analysis process, information is presented in three categories: main impacts associated with large-scale mining in Latin American territories, emergence of environmental conflicts linked to the activity and the conditions that, within the countries and in relation to the large-scale mining, favor the violation of human rights. It concludes on the relevance of thinking about the large-scale extractive activity in the key of social and environmental justice, putting in the balance the "benefits" that it generates, but also the externalities and affectations that it leaves in its wake.

ABSTRACT

The public health ramifications of marital violence are well documented and include injury, mental health concerns and physical health consequences for women and their offspring. Unfortunately, there remains social tolerance and even acceptance of these abuses against women, and health systems in India have done little to support victims despite their greater health risks. However, there are promising efforts and important advancements in India that could be built on for more effective prevention and support for women. Men and boys should be engaged in gender transformative interventions with male role models to alter men's attitudes of acceptability of and justification for marital violence and consequently their actual abusive behaviours. Given the strong demonstrated connection between men's risky and problem alcohol use and marital violence, alcohol interventions may also be beneficial. We must support women and girls vulnerable to marital violence, a group disproportionately affected by violence in their natal families as well, so they know that violence need not be part of their marriage relationship, and have skills on how to engage and communicate with or even leave their male partners to reduce their risk for violence. Formal services should be expanded for those in immediate danger and particularly for rural areas, where prevalence of marital violence is highest and supports are weakest. Finally, given the pervasiveness of attitudes accepting husbands' marital violence against women, and the fact that these have remained largely unchanged in India for a decade, large scale community and social change efforts are needed.

ABSTRACT

Becoming a vegetarian is an increasing trend among adolescents; however, evidence on the physical and mental health consequences of assuming this dietary pattern is still scarce. This review seeks to review the available scientific knowledge about adolescent vegetarianism in order to guide young people in their search for a healthier diet. A Pubmed review was performed, obtaining 9 studies with relation to physical consequences and nutritional deficits, and 6 on associations with mental health. The results are summarized according to the following classification: (1) Consequences in physical and nutritional health; (2) Consequences in mental health and links to eating disorders. The first findings point to vegetarian teenagers having a higher intake of fruits and vegetables, and a lower risk of overweight and obesity. Nonetheless, a restrictive vegetarian diet leads to nutritional deficits, which are preventable. In terms of mental health issues, we observed a greater risk of unhealthy weight control behaviour; moreover, having an eating disorder increases the likelihood of being (or having been) vegetarian. We suggest that for physicians evaluating a vegetarian adolescent, it is fundamental to explore the motivations behind this dietary pattern in order to diagnose and intervene in possible underlying eating disorders. However, a vegetarian teenager with strong personal beliefs should be provided with guidance and support to develop a healthier diet. Keywords: adolescents, vegetarian diet, physical and nutritional impact, mental health consequences
