ABSTRACT

Background and Objectives: Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning is a leading cause of injury and death due to poisoning in many parts of the world. Among numerous sources of CO, the gas water heater can be a potential under looked source causing an accidental Carbon monoxide poisoning. In the perspective of Kathmandu valley, where there are houses with small bathrooms, inadequate ventilation and absent CO detectors, gas water heaters can be extremely dangerous even if it liberates small amount of CO gas. Herein, we present a case of CO poisoning to increase awareness about the gas water heater use and the possible risk of CO poisoning in our community.Presentation of Case: A 34 years old healthy female from Patan, presented with the history of loss of consciousness for 15 minute while taking bath on a gas water heater. There was no spontaneous respiration, no cardiac activity and her body temperature was below normal.Discussion: CO is toxic to all aerobic forms to life. CO binds to hemoglobin 230 times faster than oxygen causing cellular hypoxic damage and death. CO poisoning is not uncommon in our society and many such cases are misdiagnosed for some other illness. Conclusion: Use of the gas water heaters and likelihood of CO poisoning should be notified as a public concern. People need to be aware of these hazards to prevent fatal events and likely death due to exploitation of gas water heaters.

ABSTRACT

Our institute performs retained acupuncture for cold-related symptoms using planar electric heaters. After placing retained acupuncture needles at 8 points on the lower back, the site is covered with a planar electric heater and heated for 20 minutes, with the 6-channel dial of the device set at 5, the second highest temperature. Using this method, we treat and examine patients with cold-related symptoms. If patients feel discomfort during the heating process, the procedure is continued when heat is used for treatment and immediately terminated in the case of examination. On examining related adverse events in 75 cases (224 sessions) within the 8-month period between March and October 2016, there was soreness/irritation of the skin surface in 5 (2.2%), itching in 3 (1.3%), and physical deconditioning in 1 (0.4%). However, all of these events were mild and temporary, supporting the safety of the method. As a future challenge, it may be necessary to expand this study to clinical research on traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture/moxibustion.

ABSTRACT

Objective To develop a new method for establishing a temperature gradient field in the microchannel on a glass-polydimethylsiloxane ( PDMS ) microfluidic chip and to verify its applicability in the study of cellular thermal biological effect. Methods The establishment and control of the temperature gradient field in the microchannel were implemented by a peripheral indium tin oxide ( ITO) heater and a heating micro-wire embedded in the PDMS chip. The temperature gradient field established in the microchannel was represented by the finite element numerical analysis and temperature-dependent fluorescent dye rhodamine B.Finally, the thermal biological effect, which used cell survival rate of human prostate cancer cells T24 as an indicator, was investigated in the microchannel. Results The results of finite element numerical analysis proved that this method established a temperature gradient field along the length of the microchannel successfully. The distribution range of the temperature gradient field was controlled by the ITO heater, while the gradient of the temperature gradient field was controlled by the heating micro-wire.The measurement result of rhodamine B was identical with the result of the finite element numerical analysis. The thermal biological effect of T24 tumor cell research showed that the cell survival rate decreased with the rise of the regional temperature in the microchannel. Conclusion The method developed in this paper for establishing a temperature gradient field in the microchannel on a glass-PDMS microfluidic chip is simple and easy to implement, and it can be used for parallel study of the cellular thermal biological effect on the microfluidic chip in the future.

ABSTRACT

This study had as objective to evaluate prototypes of solar heater for broiler chicken with diameter of 1.0; 1.5 and 2.0 m (treatments AQ1, AQ2 and AQ3, respectively) based on the thermal comfort indexes in Marechal Candido Rondon, Paraná State, Brazil. The values of black globe temperature, dry bulb, wet bulb and wind speed were registered above the heater and in the external conditions. Data were collected each two hours, between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM during the experimental period. Based on hourly values for heater, the Temperature and Humidity Index (THI) and the Black Globe Humidity Index (BGHI) didn't present results that differentiated the appraised heaters. The highest value of Thermal Heat Load (THL) was observed for AQ1 and AQ2 at 2:00 PM. When the heaters are compared, independent of the observation schedule, was verified that the largest values of THI and BGHI occurred for AQ1 and AQ3 and CTR for AQ1. The time which were observed the largest values of these indexes was 2:00 PM. It was concluded that the heating system can be constituted an alternative for use in aviaries considering that provide similar conditions of thermal comfort that the commercial systems.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the modulatory effect of gonadal hormone on peripheral pain. Methods: Orchiectomized and ovariectomized rats models were established. Radio heater and Von-Frey hair were used to determine the peripheral mechanical and thermal pain threshold in gonadectomized rats and their corresponding sham-controls. Results: The body weight was increased and the uterus weight was decreased after ovariectomy in female rats(P<0.01). There was no significant change in the body weight of mate rats after orchiectomization. The 100% hind paw withdrawal threshold to Von-Frey hair stimulation was decreased significantly after ovariectomization in female rats, with no significant change in the thermal pain threshold. There was no significant changes in the 100% hind paw withdrawal threshold after Von-Frey hair stimulation or thermal pain threshold after orchidectomy in male rats. Conclusion: These results suggest that changes in androgen level of male rats have no influence on the peripheral basal pain threshold, and female gonadal hormone may inhibit the peripheral pain signaling and has no effect on thermal pain threshold.

ABSTRACT

This paper describes the basic theories and means of fuzzy logic fault diagnosis. Aiming at the faults that appears in air heater, the fuzzy relation matrix used for its fault diagnosis is constructed. Based on that, the air heater fault diagnosis examples are given. Application results show that it is feasible to apply the method of fuzzy diagnosis to diagnose air heater faults and the method is simple and valid.
