ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To explore clinical effect of high-intensity laser therapy(HILT) combined with targeted hand function training on pain and lateral pinch force in grade 1-2 thumb carpometacarpal(CMC) osteoarthritis(OA).@*METHODS@#From April 2020 and April 2022, 42 female patients with thumb CMC OA grade 1 to 2, aged from 58 to 80 years old with an everage of (68.90±7.58) years old were divided into observation group of 21 patients who received HILT and targeted hand function training for 4 weeks, and 21 patients in control group who received ultrashort wave therapy combined with using of an orthosis for 4 weeks. Visual analogue scale(VAS) was applied to evaluate degree of pain, function of finger was evaluated by dynamometer to measure lateral pinch force at baseline, immediately following intervention at 4 and 12 weeks following intervention.@*RESULTS@#VAS and lateral pinch force at immediately and 12 weeks after intervention betwwen two groups were better than that of before intervention(P<0.05). Compared with control group, the degree of pain in observation group improved more(immediately after intervention t=3.37, P<0.05, 12 weeks after intervention t=9.05, P<0.05), lateral pinch force higher than that of control group (immediately after intervention t=-2.55, P<0.05, 12 weeks after intervention t=9.51, P<0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#High-intensity laser therapy combined with targeted hand function training is more effective than traditional methods in improving pain and lateral pinch force in grade 1-2 thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was to identify the effectiveness of high-intensity laser therapy on pain and function of a frozen shoulder. METHODS: Thirty patients were assigned to two groups: the experimental group (n=15) and the control group (n=15). Both groups received traditional therapy for 4 weeks, 3 days a week. The experimental group, however, received an additional high intensity laser therapy. Pain was measured using the visual analogue scale (VAS). The functional ability was measured using the patient specific functional scale (PSFS). A paired t-test was used to determine any differences before and after the treatment, and an independent t-test was used to determine any differences between treatment groups. RESULTS: Both groups showed a statistically significant difference for VAS and PSFS score (p<0.05). In comparison between two groups, more experimental group than control group statistically significant difference (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: There seems to be a positive effect on pain and function of frozen shoulder from using high intensity laser therapy.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To compare the clinical results of High intensity laser therapy (HILT) versus Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) in the lateral epicondylitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty patients who suffer from lateral epicondylitis for more than six month duration were randomly assigned two treatment groups. Group 1 (n=25) was treated with HILT using a HIRO 3.0 laser(ASA srl, Arcugnano, Italy) and total energy was administered approximately 1200J following a standard protocol for each session; Group 2 (n=25) recieved with ESWT treatment using an EvoTron(Switech Medical AG, Kreuzlingen, Switzerland) for a total of 1000 shocks for each session. The patients were evaluated by assessment of pain using visual analog scale (VAS) and simple elbow test (SET). Comparision of overall clinical outcomes were evaluated by Roles and Maudsley score at 9 months. RESULTS: Average VAS and SET scores were significantly improved in two groups, also achieved significant improvement of symptoms at 9 months follow up according to Roles and Maudesley scores(P<0.05). The success rate in the HILT group was 76 % and in the ESWT group was 72 %. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that HILT could be considered as effective and noninvasive treatment modality for lateral epicondylitis.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to know the effect of high intensive laser therapy in patients with early stage of osteoarthritis of knee. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a randomized, double blind controlled trial. 28 patients who had grade II osteoarthritis of Kellgren classification and knee pain were randomly divided into two groups. Patients underwent treatment 30 times, 5 times per week. the clinical evaluation was done by the pain, stiffness and functional score of the knee by the knee society clinical rating system, and the intensity of pain was measured also by a VAS (visual analogue scale), before and after the 1st sessions, Before and after the 2nd sessions and at 6 month after the 1st treatment. We checked hs-CRP and HA which was regarded as indexes of osteoarthritis activitiy. RESULTS: As a clinical result of high intensive laser therapy, VAS, pain and functional score were statistically more improved than those of before therapy, except stiffness (P<0.05). The results of the hs-CRP and HA which were not significantly different from those of before therapy. In the placebo group, all variables showed no difference. CONCLUSION: We concluded that Nd-YAG high intensive laser therapy in early stage of patient with osteoarthritis of knee would be helpful as noninvasive and conservative treatment for improvement clinical progress.
