RESUMEN Con el objetivo de resumir algunos aspectos destacados de la historia de la Gastroenterología en el mundo, en Cuba y especialmente en Matanzas, se expusieron cronológicamente hechos relacionados con el tema, y se destacó el aporte y el papel desempeñado por diferentes médicos en la especialidad (AU).

ABSTRACT With the objective of summarizing several significant aspects of the history of Gastroenterology in the world, in Cuba and especially in Matanzas, facts related with the theme were chronologically exposed, and the contribution and role played by different personalities in the specialty were highlighted (AU).

Apuntes históricos de la práctica de la Oftalmología en Matanzas / Historical notes about Ophthalmology' practice in Matanzas

Se narran los sucesos históricos más relevantes de la práctica de la especialidad de Oftalmología en la provincia de Matanzas y los relacionados con la formación de profesionales a partir de la década del 70 del siglo XX. Al utilizar el método de la narración histórica, se propició la reflexión sobre los propios acontecimientos y su relación con el contexto socio-económico al momento en que estos se produjeron; destacándolos como los antecedes y factores favorecedores del desarrollo de la Oftalmología en Matanzas. Este trabajo se realizó no sólo para narrar de manera cronológica la historia desde los inicios y creciente práctica local de la especialidad, sino también, como a manera de testimonio para las actuales y futuras generaciones, de cómo tributaron los profesionales, las instituciones y los propios eventos, al avance científico y al impacto social de la especialidad en Matanzas. Se concluye, que el comienzo del esplendor de la práctica de la Oftalmología en la provincia de Matanzas, se enmarca a la década del 70 del siglo pasado; y a los inicios del siglo XXI al de mayor desarrollo acumulado. Todo este salto de calidad en el tiempo y en el espacio, ha sido posible, gracias a las políticas de salud y educacionales implementadas por el Ministerio de Salud Pública del país (AU).

The authors recount the most relevant historical facts of the Ophthalmology practice in the province of Matanzas and those related to professionals´ training from the seventies of the XX century. Using the method of historical recount helped the reflection on the proper facts and their relation to the socio-economic context at the moment they took place, highlighting them as antecedents and factor favoring the development of Ophthalmology in Matanzas. The current paper was written not only to recount in a chronological way the history from the beginning and growing local practice of the specialty, but also as a testimony for the current and future generations to know how the professionals, institutions and events contributed to the scientific advance and to the social impact of the specialty in Matanzas. It is concluded that the beginning of the splendor of Ophthalmology practice in the province of Matanzas falls within the decade of the seventies of the past century, and the beginning of the XXI century is the time of the bigger accumulated development. All this quality jump in the time and space has been possible thanks to health and educational politics implemented by the Ministry og Public Health of the country (AU).

Personalidades destacadas de las Ciencias Médicas matanceras / Outstanding personalities of the Matanzas an Medical Sciences

RESUMEN Introducción: el desarrollo histórico de las Ciencias Médicas en la provincia de Matanzas ha estado indisolublemente unido a los profesionales de la salud que han tenido el honor de participar en la formación de las nuevas generaciones. Convirtiéndose así en protagonistas de la educación médica superior. Han transcurrido 50 años desde sus inicios en la provincia. Aunque en diversos artículos sobre el tema, se destacan nombres de algunos de sus profesores, no aparece una relación de manera organizada con el aporte de cada docente a la Educación Médica Superior en la provincia. Los autores consideran que la historia debe quedar escrita para que pueda ser consultada y conocida, y, sí en su escritura se cuenta con la presencia de sus protagonistas, adquiere entonces un carácter relevante. Objetivo: escribir este artículo ha sido el propósito del grupo de Ciencias Médicas de la Asociación de Pedagogos, que incluye además de sus nombres, una síntesis de sus principales aportes. Material y métodos: se utilizaron métodos del nivel teórico y del empírico como la revisión de documentos y las entrevistas. Resultados: en este trabajo se realizó un corte hasta noviembre del año 2018, por conmemorarse en el próximo enero el 50 aniversario de la Educación Médica Superior, en Matanzas. Se presentaron los aportes de 81 personalidades con sus síntesis biográficas, todos ellos considerados profesores de alto prestigio en Matanzas. Conclusiones: se presentó las síntesis biográficas de 81 personalidades de las ciencias médicas, de alto prestigio en Matanzas para contribuir al conocimiento de la historia de la docencia médica en la provincia.

ABSTRACT Introduction: the historical development of the Medical Sciences in the province of Matanzas has been indivisibly linked to the health staff that has had the honor of participating in training the new generations of health professionals, therefore becoming protagonists of the High Medical Education. Fifty years have passed since its beginning in the province. Although the names of some of them are highlighted in several articles on the theme, there is not an organized record with the contribution of each member of the teaching staff to High Medical Education in the province. The authors considered that the history should be written for it to be consulted and known; and if history is written by the protagonists themselves, it gets a more relevant character. Objective: to write this article has been the purpose of the Medical Sciences group of the Pedagogues Association. Besides the referred professionals´ name, it includes a synthesis of their main contributions. Material and methods: there were used methods of the theoretical and the empirical level like documental review and interviews. Results: November 2018 was the last date taken into account because next January will be commemorated the 50th anniversary of high medical education in Matanzas. The contributions of 81 personalities and their biographical syntheses are presented; all of the cited personalities are considered highly prestigious professors in Matanzas. Conclusions: the biographical syntheses of 81 personalities of the medical sciences with high prestige in the province of Matanzas were presented, to contribute to the knowledge of medical teaching in the province.

Momentos históricos y profesores insignes de la neurocirugía en Camagüey / Historical moments and significant professors of the neurosurgery in Camagüey

Se realizó una investigación cualitativa en el Hospital Universitario Manuel Ascunce Domenech, en Camagüey, durante el año 2011 con el objetivo de describir la historia de la Neurocirugía en la provincia y los momentos más importantes de su desarrollo. Se realizaron entrevistas a personalidades que laboran en el hospital desde su fundación el 14 de enero de 1962, los que aportaron información valiosa para la identificación cronológica de los hechos. Además, se revisaron artículos publicados que ilustraron los principales momentos en el desarrollo de la especialidad. Se pudo determinar que antes del triunfo revolucionario y previo a la inauguración del hospital, la atención neuroquirúrgica especializada en la provincia era muy limitada y los traumatismos craneales eran atendidos fundamentalmente por ortopédicos y cirujanos. En marzo de 1968 se constituyó el servicio provincial de Neurología y Neurocirugía, y a partir de este momento comienza el desarrollo vertiginoso de la especialidad en sus diferentes vertientes: docente, asistencial y científica. Se destacan los resultados alcanzados en la atención al trauma craneoencefálico y a los aneurismas intracraneales así como la introducción de la cirugía estereotáctica para el tratamiento de los tumores malignos del encéfalo. El servicio de Neurocirugía de Camagüey con el decurso de los años se ha consolidado como uno de los polos neuroquirúrgicos de Cuba y como una escuela de neurociencias que ha garantizado la formación de más de treinta especialistas de Neurocirugía para Cuba y el mundo.

Since the foundation of the Neurology Service of the University Hospital Manuel Ascunce Domenech at the end of the decade of the 60, it has kept a sustained development in the different branches of the general neurosurgery, becoming a territorial teaching-assistancial service. The achieved development has been due to the efforts and dedication of its professors staff. Some of them have physically departed but have left their legacy in the new generations of neurosurgeons that continue developing the specialty in the territory. The objective of the current work is highlighting the inestimable work of two eminent Camagüeyan neurosurgeons that marked the development of this specialty out, the professors Enrique Mendoza Rivera and Sergio Vega Basalto. In the same way we mentioned important moments in the advance of our service after its foundation. After 1982 the vascular surgery is potentiated at the expenses of the surgical treatment of the brain aneurisms, the introduction of the computerized axial tomography at the end of the 90s, the application of the stereotactic surgery in the brain tumor treatment and the development of the neurotraumatology, all of them transcendental moments of the Camagüeyan neurosurgery. The results of the medical assistance have been supported by the achievements obtained in the scientific research. The beginning of the endoscopic neurosurgery and the application of the ambulatory surgery for the treatment of the cervical and lumbar disk hernia since 2010 have been the ultimate progress of our service.

Las Clasificaciones en Medicina Arbitrariedad y Entes innescesarios / Classification in Medicine Arbitrarity and Unneccessary Subjects

Aunque las clasificaciones son una herramienta de probada utilidad en medicina desde la antigüedad para entender y manejar las enfermedades, en la actualidad hay la tendencia a sobreestimar su papel en el diagnóstico y en el tratamiento. El autor considera que los aspectos culturales, filosóficos y médicos de las enfermedades deben ser apreciados a través de una óptica que incluya las circunstancias locales para evitar el difundido error de practicar la medicina basándose en factores que pueden solo funcionar bien, en el sitio donde fueron originados.

Although classification in medicine is a proven tool useful in the understanding and management of illnesses since antiquity, nowadays there is a tendency to overestimate its role in diagnosis and treatment. The author considers that aspects such as cultural, philosophical, and medical reasons should be appraised from a local perspective to avoid the very common mistake of practicing a medicine based on factors that are only functional when applied in the locality of origin
