ABSTRACT

Apicultural products comprise honey, bee pollen, propolis, bee wax and royal jelly which are known for their medicinal and health promoting properties. Among these, bee collected pollen allure much attention for its high nutritional properties. Here, we have investigated the protective role of bee pollen against Salmonella typhimurium induced biochemical alteration in BALB/c mice. Experimental animals (BALB/c mice) were divided equally into 10 different groups including normal and treated. Oxidative stress was induced by injecting Salmonella typhimurium (0.2 mL of 2×104 CFU/mL) intraperitoneally in mice. Bacteria induced sufficient alterations in serum enzymes within 5 days. Aqueous extracts of bee pollen of different crops (250 mg/kg) were administrated orally to control and experimental mice for 21 days. Then, hepatic and renal enzymes were measured with the help of standardized kits. Results of this study have revealed that bacterial infection increases the levels of the hepatic and renal enzymes levels (P <0.001) but after treatment with bee pollen extracts, altered levels of enzymes were normalized up to the normal levels. This normalization was highest with bee pollen of Helianthus annus. Administration of bee pollen alone did not produce any negative effects in mice.

Introducción: Para la comercialización y mercadeo es importante determinar el origen botánico y geográfico mediante estudios polínico de mieles colectados por Apis mellifera (A. mellifera). Objetivo: efectuar un análisis polínico en muestras de mieles del departamento del Cauca, Colombia colectada por A. mellifera. Materiales y métodos. Las muestras de mieles fueron tomas en 11 apiarios durante 12 meses (2014-2015) en los municipios de Timbio, Totoró y Piendamó, se tomaron ejemplares de herbario de las plantas melíferas a 2Km a la redonda de los apiarios. Resultados. Se identificaron 110 tipos polínicos inmersos en las mieles, de los cuales la guayaba (Psidium guajava - Mirtaceae) con un 64% fue el tipo más frecuente para el municipio de Totoró, limpia dientes (Gouania polígama - Ramnaceae) con un 18,2% y 46% en Piendamó y Timbio, respectivamente. El resto de tipos polínicos se encuentran en menores proporciones. Conclusiones. Los análisis polínicos demuestran que las mieles colectadas durante la investigación se clasifican como poliflorales por la alta variedad de plantas cultivadas y silvestres que conservan y cultivan los apicultores del Cauca.


Introduction: For the commercialization and marketing of honeys it is important to determine the botanical and geographical origin through pollen studies of honeys collected by Apis mellifera (A. mellifera). Objective: to carry out a pollen analysis on honey samples from the department of Cauca, Colombia collected by A. mellifera. Materials and methods The honeys samples were taken in 11 apiaries during 12 months (2014-2015) to the municipalities of Timbio, Totoró and Piendamó. Moreover, specimens of herbarium were taken from melliferous plants at 2Km from the apiaries. Results: There were identified 86 pollen types immersed in honeys, of which in guava (Psidium guajava - Mirtaceae) with 64% was the most frequent type for the municipality of Totoró. Limpiadientes (Gouania polygama - Ramnaceae) with 18.2% and 46% in Piendamó and Timbio respectively. The rest of the pollen types were found in smaller proportions. Conclusion. The pollen analyses indicated that the honeys collected during the investigation are classified as polyfloral by the high variety of plants cultivated and wild that conserve and cultivate the beekeepers of Cauca.

Abstract Experiments were performed investigating citronella (Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt) as a repellent to honeybee Apis mellifera (L.) (Hymenoptera: Apidae) in Egypt, it was conducted in laboratory in the Department of Entomology and Pesticides Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University, to check long-term survival of honeybee when exposed to different nano insecticides alone or combined with citronella at the same examination box for each. In this study, we used a modeling approach regarding survival data of caged worker bees under chronic exposure to four insecticides (Chloropyrophos, Nano-chloropyrophos Imidacloprid, Nano-Imidacloprid) each of them was supplemented in a box alone and in combination with citronella. Having three replicates and five concentrations (100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 ppm). Laboratory bioassay of these insecticides showed that chloropyrophos and nano chloropyrophos were the most toxic at their high dose (500 ppm) with LT50 of 120.98 and 122.02 followed by 132.14 and 136.5 minutes for Imidacloprid and Nano-Imidacloprid, respectively. No consumption occurred by bees to mixed sugar syrup with insecticides in all treatments when citronella was added. These data highly recommended that adding citronella is very effective when nicotinoid pesticides are used to longevity honeybee life and keep bee safe.


Resumo Foram realizados experimentos para investigar a citronela (Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt) como repelente de abelhas Apis mellifera (L.) (Hymenoptera: Apidae) no Egito, conduzidos no laboratório do Departamento de Entomologia e Ciência de Pesticidas, da Faculdade de Agricultura, da Universidade do Cairo, e verificar a sobrevivência a longo prazo das abelhas quando expostas a diferentes nanoinseticidas isoladamente ou combinados com citronela na mesma caixa de exame para cada um. Neste estudo, usamos uma abordagem de modelagem em relação aos dados de sobrevivência de abelhas operárias enjauladas sob exposição crônica a quatro inseticidas (clorpirifós, nanoclorpirifós, imidacloprida e nanoimidacloprida), e cada um deles foi suplementado em uma caixa e em combinação com citronela, tendo três repetições e cinco concentrações (100, 200, 300, 400 e 500 ppm). O bioensaio em laboratório desses inseticidas mostrou que clorpirifós e nanoclorpirifós foram os mais tóxicos em altas doses (500 ppm) com LT50 de 120,98 e 122,02, seguidos por 132,14 e 136,5 minutos para imidacloprida e nanoimidacloprida, respectivamente. Não houve consumo pelas abelhas do xarope de açúcar misto com inseticidas em todos os tratamentos quando a citronela foi adicionada. Esses dados recomendam a adição de citronela, sendo muito eficaz quando pesticidas nicotinoides são utilizados para longevidade das abelhas e para mantê-las seguras.

Abstract Objective: The objective of this study was to describe the case of a 19-year-old male presenting with bradycardia and hypotension after a honeybee sting making a review of the literature and pathophysiology of the cardiovascular and electrocardiogram (EKG) changes after a bee sting. Methods: The patient's airway was inspected and secured. Electrocardiogram with an idioventricular rhythm at 41' bpm. Oxygen was administered, an intravenous access was established, and the transcutaneous pacemaker leads were placed on the chest of the patient, then published guidelines management was induced. Results: The EKG showed idioventricular rhythm at a rate of 41 beats/min that resolved to a normal sinus rhythm after treatment. Conclusions: A full and prompt cardiovascular evaluation should be performed in all patients presenting to the emergency department after a bee sting, and published guidelines regarding the management of bradycardia and anaphylaxis should be followed to achieve successful outcomes.


Resumen Objetivo: Describir el caso de un paciente masculino de 19 años que presenta bradicardia e hipotensión después de una picadura de abeja haciendo una revisión de la literatura y fisiopatología de los cambios cardiovasculares y electrocardiográficos después de una picadura de abeja. Métodos: Se inspeccionó y aseguró la vía aérea del paciente. Un rastreo de ECG realizado al ingreso reveló ritmo idioventricular a una ritmo de 41 latidos por minuto. Se administró oxígeno, se estableció un acceso IV y se colocaron los cables del marcapasos transcutáneo en el tórax del paciente, luego se indujo el manejo de las guías publicadas. Resultados: El electrocardiograma mostró un ritmo idioventricular a una frecuencia de 41 latidos por minuto que se resolvió a un ritmo sinusal normal después del tratamiento. Conclusiones: Se debe realizar una evaluación cardiovascular completa y rápida en todos los pacientes que se presentan al departamento de emergencias después de una picadura de abeja, y se deben seguir las pautas publicadas sobre el manejo de la bradicardia y la anafilaxia para lograr resultados exitosos.

ABSTRACT: In worldwide there are reports of a significant decrease in colonies of the species Apis mellifera, caused by several factors, including viral infections. In order to study and diagnose illnesses caused by viruses, in vitro cell culture is used as a valuable tool. Yet, there are still no immortalized cell lines of honey bee Apis mellifera. Primary cell cultures are promising for this purpose and can supply the lack of continuous strains, but their establishment is difficult and laborious, which often makes them unfeasible for many research centers. Through the use of cell immortalization techniques, it is possible to develop continuous cell lines and thus benefit, in different ways, research related to different species of bees. The choice of technique is challenging, since in addition to the ability to remain viable for countless passages, cells must keep the genotype and phenotype similar or identical to the original tissue. This review intends to present methodologies that can be used to immortalize Apis mellifera cells, aiming to establish a cell line. The genotypic and phenotypic implications of each technique are evaluated, and the purpose of the cell line to be developed.


RESUMO: Ao redor do mundo há relatos da diminuição significativa de colônias da espécie Apis mellifera, causada por diversos fatores, incluindo infecções virais. Para estudo e diagnóstico de enfermidades causadas por vírus utiliza-se, como uma ferramenta valiosa, o cultivo celular in vitro. Contudo, ainda não existem linhagens celulares imortalizadas de abelhas Apis mellifera. Os cultivos celulares primários são promissores para este fim e podem suprir a falta de linhagens contínuas, porém seu estabelecimento é difícil e laborioso o que, muitas vezes, os torna inviáveis para muitos centros de pesquisa. Através do uso de técnicas de imortalização celular é possível desenvolver linhagens contínuas de células e assim beneficiar, de diversas formas, as pesquisas relacionadas às diferentes espécies de abelhas. A escolha da técnica é desafiadora, visto que, além da capacidade de permanecer viável por inúmeras passagens, as células devem manter o genótipo e fenótipo semelhante ou idêntico ao tecido original. O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar metodologias que podem ser utilizadas para imortalização de células de Apis mellifera, visando o estabelecimento de uma linhagem celular. São avaliadas as implicações genotípicas e fenotípicas de cada técnica, e a finalidade da linhagem celular a ser desenvolvida.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: We evaluated the epidemiological and clinical profile of reported cases of bee sting incidents in Santa Catarina, Brazil. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included all reported cases of bee sting incidents among the population of Santa Catarina from 2007 to 2017. RESULTS: In total, 8,912 cases were reported, corresponding to an overall rate of 12.3/100,000 population. The mean age was 29,8 years with 60.2% men. The lethality rate was 0.2%. CONCLUSIONS: Santa Catarina has a high incidence rate of bee stings, which is higher than the national average. The data presented in this study may be underestimated.

ABSTRACT

In the present study, to investigate genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships among honey bee populations of Iraq ISSR markers were used. Sampling was carried out during summer 2017 from 5 cities of Iraq (Dahuk, Arbil, Sulaymaniyah, Kirkuk, and Kafri). Total DNA was extracted from the head and thorax sections of each worker honey bee, using salting out method with minor modifications. PCR amplification of genomic DNA was performed using 10 ISSR marker primers (A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, A9 and A10). The primers yielded 50 polymorphic bands and number of bands were variable from 8-12 (average 9.62), and percentage of polymorphic loci was 73.6. The estimated genetic diversity for the populations ranged from 0.39 in Kafri population to 0.47 in Arbil population, and total genetic diversity among loci was calculated as 0.47 while average within population genetic diversity was 0.44. GST value was 0.085. The Phylogenetic tree showed two main clusters; the first one comprised of three populations (Dahuk, Arbil, and Sulaymaniyah), and the second one included two communities (Kirkuk and Kafri). Heterozygosity values, Shannon index and the number of alleles of honey bee populations were minimal that could be caused by low definite geographic structure of honey bee populations. This research provided new information regarding genetic diversity in selected local honeybee in Kurdistan region of Iraq and will be useful for selection, future local biodiversity conservation and controlled breeding programs.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Accidents related to Africanized honey bees are growing globally and are associated with multiple stings owing to the aggressive behavior of this species. The massive inoculation of venom causes skin necrosis and rhabdomyolysis leading to renal failure. Anaphylactic manifestations are more common and are treated using well-defined treatment protocols. However, bee venom-induced toxic reactions may be serious and require a different approach. We report the case of a 3-year-old child, which would help clinicians to focus on the treatment approach required after an incident involving multiple bee stings.

Resumen Antecedentes: Las picaduras de abejas producen el mayor número de accidentes en muchos países. Se han descrito manifestaciones sistémicas inusuales tras la exposición al veneno de himenópteros. Con menor frecuencia se han documentado complicaciones neurológicas, infarto del miocardio, rabdomiólisis e insuficiencia renal. Este tipo de reacciones alérgicas sistémicas se producen en 0.3-7.5% de la población. Caso clínico: Varón de 39 años, talador, procedente de zona rural de Comayagua, Honduras, con historia de sufrir múltiples picaduras por abeja (Apis mellifera) acompañado de síncope, con trauma en región frontoparietal bilateral, de 3 h de evolución, fue atendido en servicio de salud en Comayagua y trasladado al Hospital Escuela Universitario, donde se continuó manejo por anafilaxia severa y extracción de múltiples aguijones. Posteriormente inició con estridor laríngeo, cianosis y disnea, por lo que se realizó intubación endotraqueal. Al examen físico se identificó edema facial importante, múltiples lesiones y excoriaciones, patrón respiratorio irregular, picaduras generalizadas, y presencia de hipoventilación en ambos campos pulmonares. Glasgow 13/15, hiperalgesia generalizada. Exámenes de laboratorio mostraron reacción leucemoide, neutrofilia severa, hiperhemoglobinemia, aumento de azoados, enzimas hepáticas elevadas, hipoalbuminemia, trastornos hidroelectrolíticos y acidosis mixta. Posteriormente progresó a rabdomiólisis y falla multiorgánica (hemodinámica, ventilatoria, renal), y falleció 48 h después de su ingreso. Conclusión: El número de picaduras y la cantidad de veneno inoculado son factores predictores de alta mortalidad y baja sobrevida. El traslado de forma oportuna y el manejo multidisciplinario son fundamentales para determinar un buen pronóstico en estos pacientes.


Abstract Background: Bee stings produce the greatest number of accidents in many countries. Unusual systemic manifestations have been described after exposure to Hymenoptera venom. Less frequently, neurological complications, myocardial infarction, rhabdomyolysis and renal failure have been documented. This type of systemic allergic reactions occur in 0.3-7.5% of the population. Case report: A 39-year- old male, logger, from the rural área of Comayagua, Honduras, had a history of suffering multiple bee stings (Apis mellifera) with a syncopal episode, trauma in parietal-forehead bilateral region and 3 hours of evolution. He was treated at a health service in Comayagua and transferred to the University School Hospital, where treatment was continued due to severe anaphylaxis and extraction of multiple stings. Later he began with stridor, cianosis and dyspnea, so endotracheal intubation was performed. Physical examination revealed significant facial edema, multiple lesions and excoriations, irregular respiratory pattern, generalized stings, and the presence of hypoventilation in both lung fields. Glasgow 13/15, generalized hyperalgesia. Laboratory tests showed leukemoid reaction, severe neutrophilia, hyperhemoglobinemia, increased nitrogen levels, elevated liver enzymes, hypoalbuminemia, hydroelectrolytic disorders and mixed acidosis. He later progressed to multiorgan failure and rhabdomyolysis (hemodynamics, ventilatory, renal), and died 48 hours after admission. Conclusion: The number of bites and the amount of poison inoculated are predictive factors of high mortality and low survival. The transfer in a timely manner and multidisciplinary management are essential to determine a good prognosis in these patients.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effect of commercially used entomopathogens on Africanized Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae). Four bioassays were performed: 1) pulverized entomopathogens on A. mellifera; 2) entomopathogens sprayed on a smooth surface; 3) entomopathogens sprayed on soy leaves; and 4) entomopathogens mixed with candy paste (sugar syrup). Five treatments were prepared: sterile distilled water (control), distilled water sterilized with Tween® 80 (0.01%), and the commercial entomopathogens Metarhizium anisopliae E9 (1.0 × 109 conidia mL−1), Beauveria bassiana PL63 (1.0 × 108 conidia mL−1) and Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki HD-1 (3.0 × 108 spores mL−1). Each treatment consisted of five repetitions, with 20 workers per repetition, which were stored in a plastic box and, later, in a biological oxygen demand (B.O.D.) incubator (27 ± 2 ºC, RH of 60% ± 10%, 12-h photophase). The mortality of the workers was evaluated from 1 h to 240 h, and the data were analyzed using Bayesian inference. The workers killed by the ingestion of candy paste contaminated with the pathogens (products) were randomly separated and selected for the removal of the midgut. Each midgut was fixed in Bouin's solution and prepared for histology. B. bassiana was verified to reduce the survival of A. mellifera workers in all bioassays. Moreover, M. anisopliae reduced the survival of A. mellifera workers directly sprayed, on a smooth surface and mixed with candy. B. thuringiensis reduced A. mellifera survival on a smooth surface and mixed with candy paste. However, its effects were lower than that observed by B. bassiana. The treatments with the biological products did not induce morphometric alterations in the midgut of A. mellifera.

Abstract China is the largest royal jelly producer and exporter in the world, and high royal jelly-yielding strains have been bred in the country for approximately three decades. However, information on the molecular mechanism underlying high royal jelly production is scarce. Here, a cDNA microarray was used to screen and identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) to obtain an overview on the changes in gene expression levels between high and low royal jelly producing bees. We developed a honey bee gene chip that covered 11,689 genes, and this chip was hybridised with cDNA generated from RNA isolated from heads of nursing bees. A total of 369 DEGs were identified between high and low royal jelly producing bees. Amongst these DEGs, 201 (54.47%) genes were up-regulated, whereas 168 (45.53%) were down-regulated in high royal jelly-yielding bees. Gene ontology (GO) analyses showed that they are mainly involved in four key biological processes, and pathway analyses revealed that they belong to a total of 46 biological pathways. These results provide a genetic basis for further studies on the molecular mechanisms involved in high royal jelly production.

ABSTRACT

The use of bee attractants, Bee-Q and Fruit BoostTM in the pollination of niger was evaluated. Bee visitations to niger flowers were observed for two weeks and an estimation of seed yield was determined. Different concentrations of Bee-Q and Fruit boostTM were evaluated to understand honeybee visitation patterns on the target crop and pollination efficiency. Results indicate that applications of Bee-Q at 12.5 g/l and Fruit boost at 0.75 ml/l on niger plots significantly increased the number of bee foragers over control plots. In addition, plots sprayed with these bee attractants significantly enhanced the seed set, seed weight, and germination of niger. This study suggests that pheromone-based bee attractants applied to niger can increase the marginal percentage of bee visitation, seed yield, and percent germination.

Background : Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a low-grade inflammatory disease characterized by hyperandrogenemia, hirsutism, chronic anovulation and vascular disorder. Interleukin-6 (IL-6), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are triggered by inflammatory stimuli and lead to angiogenesis and pathogenesis of the ovary. Honeybee venom (HBV) contains an array of biologically active components possessing various pharmaceutical properties. This study was designed to assess the possibility of HBV application as an anti-inflammatory therapeutic agent to suppress levels of the main inflammatory mediators IL-6, COX-2 and VEGF. To induce PCOS, 1 mg of estradiol valerate (EV) per 100 g of body weight was subcutaneously (SC) injected into eight-week-old rats. After 60 days, 0.5 mg/kg of HBV was administered Intraperitoneal (IP) for 14 consecutive days, and the results of PCOS treatment were investigated. Rats were then anesthetized with CO2, and the ovaries were surgically removed. Serum IL-6 was detected by the ELISA kit. Immunoexpression of COX-2 and VEGF were examined in three groups: EV-induced PCOS, HBV-treated PCOS and control animals. Results : Thickness of theca layer, number and diameter of cysts and levels of IL-6 significantly decreased in HBV group relative to PCOS group. The immunohistochemical analysis showed an increase in COX-2 and VEGF expression in PCOS group whereas HBV-treated rats presented weak and irregular immunostaining. Conclusions : Our results suggest that the beneficial effect of HBV may be mediated through its inhibitory effect on serum IL-6 level and ovarian COX-2 and VEGF expression.

C-reactive protein (CRP), released by adipocytes, plays a key role in PCOS. Apis mellifera honeybee venom (HBV) contains a variety of biologically active components with various pharmaceutical properties. This study was designed to assess the possibility of HBV application as an anti-inflammatory therapeutic agent. To induce PCOS, 1 mg/100 g body weight estradiol valerate (EV) was subcutaneously (SC) injected into eight-week-old rats. After 60 days, 0.5 mg/kg HBV was administered SC for 14 consecutive days, and the results of PCOS treatment were investigated. Rats were then anesthetized with chloroform, and their ovaries and livers were surgically removed to determine histomorphometrical changes. Testosterone and 17-β-estradiol were detected by chemiluminescence immunoassay. In order to detect serum CRP, ELISA kit was used in three groups of EV-induced PCOS, HBV-treated PCOS and control animals. Thickness of the theca layer, number of cysts and the level of serum CRP significantly decreased in HBV group in comparison with PCOS group. Moreover, corpus luteum, as a sign of ovulation, was observed in HBV-treated ovaries which were absent in PCOS group. Our results suggest that the beneficial effect of HBV may be mediated through its inhibitory effect on serum CRP levels.(AU)

INTRODUCTION: In 1956, Africanized honeybees (AHB) migrated from Brazil to other regions of the Western Hemisphere, including South, Central, and North America, except for Canada. Despite being productive, they are highly aggressive and cause fatal accidents. This study aimed to evaluate patients at the Clinical Hospital of Botucatu Medical School (HC-FMB) and to propose treatment guidelines. METHODS: From 2005 to 2006, the clinical and laboratorial aspects of 11 patients (7 male and 4 female) and the anatomopathological aspects of one patient who had died in 2003 were analyzed. RESULTS: The age of the surviving patients varied from 5 to 87 years, with a mean of 42.5 years. The majority of accidents occurred in the afternoon, and the number of stings ranged from 20 to 500. The principal signs and symptoms were pain and local inflammatory signs, nausea, tachycardia, and vomiting. Biochemical findings presented increased levels of creatine phosphokinase, lactate dehydrogenase, and aspartate/alanine aminotransferase. An 11-year-old male patient died upon entering the attic of a two-storey building where he was attacked by a swarm, receiving more than 1,000 stings. He was sent to HC-FMB where he was treated, but he died 24h later. Observed at the autopsy were erythematous-purpuric skin lesions besides necrosis at the sting locations, rhabdomyolysis, focal myocardial necrosis, tubular hydropic degeneration and focal tubular acute necrosis of the kidneys, myoglobinuria, and centrolobular necrosis in the liver. CONCLUSIONS: Accidents caused by multiple AHB stings always constitute a medical emergency. As there is no specific antivenom, we have developed guidelines, including first aid, drugs, and the proper removal of stingers.


INTRODUÇÃO: As abelhas africanizadas (AHBs) migraram do Brasil em 1956 para todo o continente Americano. Apesar de produtivas, são agressivas causando acidentes fatais. O objetivo foi avaliar pacientes atendidos no Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Botucatu (HC-FMB) e propor um roteiro de tratamento. MÉTODOS: Entre 2005 e 2006, foram analisados os aspectos clínicos e laboratoriais de 11 pacientes e anatomopatológicos de um que foi a óbito em 2003. RESULTADOS: A idade dos pacientes variou entre 5 e 87 com média de 42,5 anos. Sete eram do sexo masculino e quatro do feminino. O número de picadas variou entre 20 e 500. Nove deles receberam mais de 50 picadas. Os principais sinais e sintomas foram dor local, náuseas, taquicardia e vômitos. Os exames hematológicos mostraram leucocitose, neutrofilia, anemia e desvio à esquerda escalonado. Os exames bioquímicos revelaram níveis elevados de creatinofosfoquinase, desidrogenase lática e aspartato/alanina aminotransferase. O paciente que foi a óbito 24h após o atendimento tinha 11 anos, era do sexo masculino e foi atacado ao adentrar um edifício de dois andares recebendo mais de 1.000 picadas. O exame anatomopatológico mostrou lesões eritemato-purpúricas, além de necrose nos locais das picadas. Apresentou também rabdomiólise, necroses focais do miocárdio, degeneração hidrópica acompanhada de necrose tubular renal aguda, mioglobinúria e necrose centrolobular no fígado. CONCLUSÕES: Os pacientes acometidos por múltiplas picadas necessitam de tratamento imediato e por não dispormos de um soro específico desenvolvemos um roteiro que inclui os primeiros socorros, as drogas a serem empregadas e a retirada dos ferrões corretamente.

ABSTRACT

Honey production from approximately 1.6 million colonies owned by about 199,000 Korean beekeepers was almost 23,000 metric tons in 2009. Nosema causes significant losses in honey production and the virus decreases population size. We initiated a survey of honey bee colonies on the blooming period of Acacia to determine the prevalence of Nosema and virus in 2011. Most Korean beekeepers have moved from the south to north of Korea to get Acacia nectar for 2 mon. This provided a valuable opportunity to sample bees originating from diverse areas in one location. Twenty hives owned by 18 beekeepers were sampled in this year. Nosema spore counts ranged from zero to 1,710,000 spores per bee. The average number of nosema spores per bee was 580,000. Approximately 95% of the colonies were infected with Nosema, based on the presence of spores in the flowering period of Acacia. This indicates that Nosema is the predominant species affecting honeybee colonies. Also, the seven most important honeybee viruses were investigated by reverse transcription-PCR. Among them, four different viruses were detected in samples. Black queen cell virus was present in all samples. Chronic bee paralysis virus was detected in 10% of samples. Deformed wing virus was present in only 5% of the samples. Prevalence of Sacbrood virus was 15%. However, Cloudy wing virus, Israel acute paralysis virus and kashmir bee virus were not detected in any of samples.
