ABSTRACT

Purpose: Manufacturing a spectacle frame for a facially deformed individual is challenging because of facial asymmetry. One of the solutions is the customization of spectacle frames. Customization of spectacle frames for facially deformed individuals requires a better understanding of the facial anthropometry of deformed faces. This study aimed to analyze the facial anthropometry of deformed faces to understand the range of variability. The results of this study will be used to find customization methods in the future. Methods: We measured and analyzed the 12 facial parameters of individuals with facial deformities using the ImageJ software. Results: The data collected were normally distributed. Paired sample test revealed a statistically significant difference between innercanthus distances (right innercanthus distance [RICD] and left innercanthus distance [LICD]). Correlation analysis showed a positive difference between horizontal and vertical pupillary distance?innercanthus distance (PD?ICD) (0.68, 0.75, and 0.81) and pupillary distance?helix distance (PD?HD) (0.57, 0.68, and 0.59) relations. PD?ICD correlations are stronger compared to the PD?HD relation. Conclusion: Altering the frame center distance and the temple heights are the most important for asymmetric faces. Large population?based data are required to make concrete decisions to design a spectacle frame for asymmetric faces.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To assess the macular vessel density (VD) on optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT?A) using proprietary software (automated) and image processing software (manual) in diabetic patients. Methods: In a retrospective study, OCT?A images (Triton, TOPCON Inc.) of type 2 diabetics presenting to a tertiary eye care center in North India between January 2018 and December 2019 with or without nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) and with no macular edema were analyzed. Macular images of size 3 × 3 mm were binarized with global thresholding algorithms (ImageJ software). Outcome measures were superficial capillary plexus VD (SCP?VD, automated and manual), deep capillary plexus VD (DCP?VD, manual), and correlation between automated and manual SCP?VD. Results: OCT?A images of 89 eyes (55 patients) were analyzed: no diabetic retinopathy (NoDR): 29 eyes, mild NPDR: 29 eyes, and moderate NPDR: 31 eyes. Automated SCP?VD did not differ between NoDR and mild NPDR (P = 0.69), but differed between NoDR and moderate NPDR (P = 0.014) and between mild and moderate NPDR (P = 0.033). Manual SCP?VD (Huang and Otsu methods) did not differ between the groups. Manual DCP?VD differed between NoDR and mild NPDR and between NoDR and moderate NPDR, but not between mild and moderate NPDR with both Huang (P = 0.024, 0.003, and 0.51, respectively) and Otsu (P = 0.021, 0.006, and 0.43, respectively) methods. Automated SCP?VD correlated moderately with manual SCP?VD using Huang method (r = 0.51, P < 0.001) with a mean difference of ?0.01% (agreement limits from ?6.60% to +6.57%). Conclusion: DCP?VD differs consistently between NoDR and NPDR with image processing, while SCP?VD shows variable results. Different thresholding algorithms provide different results, and there is a need to establish consensus on the most suited algorithm

ABSTRACT

Objective To report a simple method for determination of dwell position offset of ring applicator using GafchromicTM EBT3 film and ImageJ software. Methods In the dummy plan, this study reconstructed the ring applicator point by point manually according to the MR line marker, the most distal reconstruction point was at the end of marker, set the offset to zero. The first, eleventh, and twenty-third dwell positions were activated with the step length of 2. 5 mm. A setup image was designed to immobilize the ring applicator. The setup image was composed of two perpendicular thin lines and a circular with a diameter of 16 mm. GafchromicTM EBT3 film was fixed behind the setup image by plastic tapes. After irradiation, a ruler was put on the bottom of the irradiated film as a plotting scale. Photos were taken with the help of a vertical camera using a tripod. The file was imported into ImageJ software and the coordinate values were obtained by semi-automatic recognition of the center of exposure area. The test was repeated five times at one week interval to evaluate the uncertainty. For every time, each dwell position was measured five times. Results The angle between the radius of the first dwell position and the x-axis was 43° in the dummy plan, and (46. 8 ± 0. 9)° for actual measurement. The offset was 0. 9 mm for the ring applicator combined with the MR according to calculation. The distances between the first, the eleventh and the twenty-third dwell positions and the center of the ring were ( 12. 9 ± 0. 1 ) mm, ( 12. 5 ± 0. 1 ) mm, (12. 4 ± 0. 1) mm, respectively. Conclusions Using GafchromicTM EBT3 film and the ImageJ software is a simplified method to validate the dwell position offset of the ring applicator.

ABSTRACT

The auxin-like effect consists in plant growth promotion by humic acids (HA). In this research the auxin-like effect was determined by digital image processing, both foliar and root surface of corn plants were assessed. The HA were obtained through alcaline solubilization coal, HA-NaOH and through coal bacterial solubilization, HA-CSB3 and HA-CSB25. The application of the HA solutions of 20, 80 and 150mgHA/L was evaluated through seed immersion and foliar spray on two week-old plants. The experiment was carried out under shade cloth with five replicates by treatments; 30 days after planting in soil, leaf area was measured using ImageJ software and total root surface through an algorithm of Matlab. Significant increase in leaf area of plants treated by immersion of seeds in HA-BSC3-80mg/L and 150mg/L, AH-CSB25-20mg/L and 150mg/L, and HA-NaOH-80mg/L was found, as well as in plants treated by foliar aspersion of HA-CSB3-150mg/L, AH-CSB 25-150mg/L and HA-NaOH-150mg/L. Moreover significant increase in total root surface of plants treated with HA-CSB25-150mg/L, HA-NaOH-80mg/L and HA-CSB3-80mg/L and all treatments of HA by aspersion was found. The auxin-like effect of humic acids on maize plants was evidenced through digital image analysis; this tool can produce accurate information to measure some plant development parameters.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The leaf area determination are extremely important in agronomic and physiological studies, as they provide valuable information in vegetable metabolism, methods used for this purpose should be accurate. This study aimed to develop polynomial models to estimate leaf area (LA). The methods used were leaf discs and ImageJ(r) software, with measures of length (L), width (W), and relationship between length times width (LW) in leaves of the bell pepper crop in two field trials with two hybrids: Arcade and Impacto, as well as, the correlation of values found when using the two methods. Through a random sampling, 560 leaves from each hybrid were selected, at different stages of crop growth. Regression analysis of LA versus measures L, W and LW were performed by linear and quadratic models. The variable that best estimated LA was the relationship between LW with linear model (r2=0.98). Measurements of length and width of leaves presented adjustment to quadratic model r2=0.93 and r2=0.91, respectively. The integrator model for all samples and both hybrids was: LA=0.57×LW. The destructive method of leaf discs showed high correlation (r2=0.99) with the non-destructive method of ImageJ(r) software.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Indocyanine green (ICG) videoangiography (VA) is being used in assessment of blood flow during cerebrovascular surgery. However, data collected during ICG angiography are usually interpreted qualitatively. In this study, quantitative analysis of ICG angiogram was attempted. MATERIALS AND METHODS: ICG VA, performed during aneurysm surgery was analyzed retrospectively. The angiogram was captured serially in regular time interval. The stacked images were then fed into an image analysis program, ImageJ. The selected areas of interest were as follows: parent and branch vessels, and dome of aneurysm. Changes of signals of measurement points were plotted. The time to peak, washout time, and the peak intensity between areas were compared. RESULTS: Among the 16 cases enrolled in this study, five cases were anterior communicating artery aneurysms, and 11 cases were middle cerebral artery bifurcation aneurysms. There was no signal intensity of aneurysm dome in our series. No difference in time to peak or maximum signal intensity was observed between vessels in each case. The average time to peak was 9.0 and washout time was 31.3 seconds. No significant difference in time profile was observed between anterior communicating artery aneurysms and middle cerebral artery bifurcation aneurysms. CONCLUSION: Findings of this study demonstrate that quantitative analysis is possible using a personal computer and common video capture and analysis software. It can be a good adjunctive to evaluation of vascular status during aneurysm surgery. It displays time profiles of multiple points of interest over time, and is helpful in objective evaluation of changes of blood flow over time. It might be helpful in various fields of cerebrovascular surgery.

During embryological limb formation mesenchymal cells condense and differentiate into chondrocytes, in a process known aschondrogenesis. These chondrocytes synthesize glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), thus playing an important role in this process.A simplified system in vitro chondrogenesis, using adult mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) has been demonstrated. Thisdifferentiation potential is usually assessed by histological staining. Objective. Establishment of a semi-automatic grading systemfor histochemistry stains and immunohistochemistry assays. Materials and methods. For chondrogenesis cells were culturedfor three weeks in aggregates with inducing media. Total GAGs were measured using dimethylmethylene blue (DMB) method. For histological analyses aggregates were stained with Alcian blue for total GAGs detection and immunohistochemistry (IHC)for aggrecan was performed. Semi-automatic grading for all slides was obtained after ImageJ analysis. Results. MSCs culturedas aggregates in chondrogenic differentiation media had similar protein concentrations for all time points, suggesting cellularityremained homogenous during culture. Total GAGs was higher for aggregates cultured in chondrogenic compared to complete media. The same trend was observed for Alcian blue stain grades by blinded observer and analysis using ImageJ software. Aggrecan’s IHCanalysis had a decreasing tendency with time for aggregates in chondrogenic media for blinded observer and ImageJ evaluation.Conclusion. We developed a functional system for semi-automatic slide grading. We corroborated these results by biochemicalanalysis with comparable results. ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the reproducibility of ImageJ software in analyzing the color of the optic disc. METHODS: One hundred twelve normal participants (56 males and 56 females) were enrolled in this study. The image of the optic disc was taken using Kowa digital disc photo-graphy, and the gray scales of the nasal rim (NR), brightest cupping center (BCC) and largest inferior retinal vein (IRV) were calculated using histogram in ImageJ. Three different observers calculated the gray scales three separate times. Reproducibility was assessed using the interclass correlation coefficient (ICC). RESULTS: The mean age of the participants was 50.6 years old (range, 11 to 82 years). The mean gray scales of the nasal rim were 91.81, 94.91, and 93.24; those of the brightest cupping center were 174.84, 179.94, and 177.76; and those of the largest inferior retinal vein were 61.85, 53.48, and 56.73 for observers 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Inter-observer reproducibility for NR, BCC and IRV was considered good based upon ICC values of 0.944, 0.860, and 0.789 for observers 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Significant age-related differences between the values of the brightest cupping center were noted, and the gray scale score was decreased in the older participants (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The gray scale of the brightest cupping center diminished with age. ImageJ can be a useful objective tool with high reproducibility in the analysis of optic disc color.
