ABSTRACT

Resumen El bosque seco tropical esta amenazado por una fuerte estacionalidad y presiones antropogénicas, lo cual puede afectar su estructura y composición. El objetivo del estudio fue estimar el impacto de dos matrices agropecuarias (arrozales y pasturas) en la composición florística y el almacenamiento de carbono en bosques riparios. Se establecieron cinco parcelas de muestreo (10 x 10 m cada una) en el interior y borde de los bosques en las dos matrices en julio 2013. Se midieron todos los individuos con un diámetro a la altura del pecho (dap) ≥ 5 cm. La biomasa arriba del suelo fue estimada con un modelo alométrico general, recomendado para estos bosques. El índice de valor de importancia (IVI), la riqueza de especies y los índices de diversidad alfa fueron estimados. Fueron realizados análisis de varianza y pruebas de comparación de medias de Fisher LSD. Se registró un total de 32 familias, 21 géneros y 45 especies (29 y 33 especies para pasturas y arrozales, respectivamente) de árboles en 0.2 ha. Las especies más abundantes y más importantes ecológicamente fueron: Oxandra espintana y Calliandra sp. (520 y 241 individuos/ha y 72 y 48 % de IVI, respectivamente). Estos bosques presentaron una dominancia media de 33.9 m2/ha sin efecto estadístico (P< 0.05) de la posición del bosque ni de la matriz. La matriz del paisaje no afectó (P> 0.05) los índices de la diversidad alfa. Los árboles más grandes y el mayor carbono fueron encontrados en la matriz de pasturas en comparación con la de arrozales (14.6 vs 13.4 cm de dap y 72.9 vs 45.6 t C/ha, respectivamente). Esta investigación provee un entendimiento de la riqueza y composición arbórea y almacenamiento de carbono de bosques ribereños en dos matrices agropecuarias, lo cual podría servir para el establecimiento de sistemas silvopastoriles con especies nativas.


Abstract The tropical dry forest is a typical lowland ecosystem that is threatened by a strong seasonality and anthropogenic pressures, which can affect the forest composition and structure. The objective of this study was to estimate the impact of two agricultural matrices on the floristic composition and carbon storage in riparian forests. For this, five permanent plots (10 x 10 m each) were established and sampled in the forest interior and at the edge of two agricultural matrices (rice fields and pasture lands), in July 2013. All individuals with a diameter at breast height (dbh) ≥ 5 cm were recorded and measured, and the aboveground biomass was estimated with a general allometric model. Additionally, the importance value index (IVI), species richness and Alpha´s diversity indexes were estimated; an analysis of variance and means comparison tests of Fisher LSD were also carried out. A total of 32 families, 21 genera and 45 species (29 and 33 species in pasture lands and rice fields, respectively) of trees in 0.2 ha were recorded. The most abundant and most ecologically important species were Oxandra espintana and Calliandra sp. (520 and 241 individuals/ha and 72 and 48 % of IVI, respectively). These forests presented a mean dominance of 33.9 m2/ha with no effect (P< 0.05) of forest location or agricultural matrix. The matrix of the landscape did not affect (P> 0.05) the Alpha diversity indexes. The biggest trees and greatest carbon storage were found in forests with pasture matrices when compared to rice fields (14.6 vs 13.4 cm of dbh and 72.9 vs 45.6 t C/ha, respectively). This research provides an understanding of the tree richness and composition and carbon storage of riparian forests in two agricultural matrices, which could be a basis for the establishment of silvopastoral systems with native species.

ABSTRACT

En la región lechera del centro de Antioquia el paisaje ha sido ampliamente transformado de bosques montanos a pastizales para pastoreo de ganado vacuno, siendo la restauración del paisaje en esta zona una acción primordial que debe ser incorporada en el plan de uso de la tierra. El objetivo general de este estudio fue seleccionar tres especies arbóreas que promuevan el proceso de regeneración de bosques montanos y evaluar el efecto de diferentes estrategias de siembra sobre el establecimiento de las plántulas. Se consideró el efecto del tipo de fertilización, combinación de especies, disponibilidad lumínica y niveles de precipitación sobre la sobrevivencia y crecimiento de las plántulas. Quercus humboldtii, Weinmannia pubescens y Myrsine coriacea fueron las especies seleccionadas por presentar alto índice de valor de importancia ecológica y alta disponibilidad de semillas. La fertilización orgánica favoreció la sobrevivencia de las tres especies evaluadas y el crecimiento para W. pubescens. La combinación de especies no afectó la tasa de crecimiento pero sí la sobrevivencia. Se detectó también mayor sobrevivencia en las plántulas de las tres especies que recibieron sombra en algún momento del día; al contrario, disminuyó en la época de sequía. El éxito en el establecimiento de Q. humboldtii, la tolerancia de W. pubescens a las heladas y la dispersión de semillas de M. coriacea por aves son características que en conjunto convierten a estas especies en promisoras para procesos de restauración ecológica en áreas de bosque montano.


Mountain forest landscapes of the central region of Antioquia department have been largely transformed into pastures; therefore, ecological restoration must be included as a primordial strategy. The aim of this study was the selection of three tree species that help to improve natural regeneration of mountain forest and to evaluate the effect of different sowing strategies on the seedling`s establishment. We assessed the effect of fertilization type, combination of species, light availability and monthly precipitation on seedling survival and growth. Myrsine coriacea, Quercus humboldtii, and Weinmannia pubescens were selected on the basis of high importance value index and high seed availability. Survival of the three species was higher when seedlings were fertilized with organic matter. Also, growth was higher for W. pubescens. The combination of species had no effect on the growth rate of the three species, but it affected negatively the survival of Q. humboldtii and W. pubescens growing with M. coriacea. Survival was higher for seedlings of W. pubescens and M. coriacea out of the sun at some moment during the day. Also, survival diminished during drought period. Successful establishment of Q. humboldtii and tolerance of W. pubescens to frost and regrowth after freeze period and seed dispersal of M. coriacea by birds constitute a set of characteristics that make of these species promissory in the ecological restoration process in degraded mountain forest areas.

ABSTRACT

Imperata grassland at Dorgakona, Barak valley, North Eastern India was analyzed for species composition and diversity pattern in relation to traditional management practices. 19 families were in the burnt and unburnt plots of the study site with Poaceae as the most dominant one. 29 species occurred in the burnt plot and 28 in the unburnt plot. Most of the species were common in both the plots. The pattern of frequency diagrams indicated that the vegetation was homogeneous. Imperata cylindrica, a rhizomatous grass was the dominant species based on density (318.75 and 304.18 nos. m-2), basal cover (158.22 and 148.34 cm2 m-2) and Importance value index (IVI) (132.64 and 138.74) for the burnt and unburnt plots respectively. Borreria pusilla was the co-dominant species constituting Imperata-Borreria assemblage of the studied grassland. It was observed that B. pusilla (162.25 nos. m-2 and 50.37 nos. m-2), I. cylindrica (318.75 nos. m-2 and 304.18 nos. m-2) and Setaria glauca (24.70 nos. m-2 and 16.46 nos. m-2) were benefited from burning as shown by the values sequentially placed for burnt and unburnt plots. Certain grasses like Chrysopogon aciculatus and Sacciolepis indica were restricted to burnt plot while Oxalis corniculata showed its presence to unburnt plot. Grasses dominated the grassland as revealed by their contribution to the mean percentage cover of 72% in burnt plot and 76% in unburnt plot. The dominance-diversity curves in the study site approaches a log normal series distribution suggesting that the resources are shared by the constituent species. Seasonal pattern in diversity index suggested definite influence of climatic seasonality on species diversity; rainy season was conducive for maximum diversity (1.40 and 1.38 in the burnt and unburnt plots, respectively). Dominance increased with concentration of fewer species (0.0021 in burnt plot and 0.0055 in unburnt plot) in summer and behaves inversely to index of diversity. This study showed that the traditional management practices benefits the farmers as it promote grassland regeneration with I. cylindrica as the dominant grass.

ABSTRACT

The species diversity of a cultural eutrophic lake at Ranchi was studied in relation to external variables (forcing functions) and internal or state variables. The lake receives daily detergent inputs in the form of washings of a variety of objects. A model was constructed for the estimation of detergent inputs from the increase in the phosphate concentration, and from changes in the concentration of inorganic carbon. Nutrients such as inorganic carbon, nitrates, phosphates, sulphates were found to be high in contrast to natural unpolluted systems. The DOM, COD and BOD were also found to be high suggesting organic pollution of the system with an organic carbon load of 5.4 m moles l-1. The growth and development of the plankton constituents was studied in this regime. The natural planktonic rhythm was found to be modified by the polluted condition existing in the lake. The phytoplankton exhibited four peaks in March, May, August, and November while, the zooplankton showed three peaks in February, July and October. The abundance of zooplankton during the annual cycle oscillated with that of the phytoplankton. There was much more evenness in the zooplankton population in comparison to the phytoplankton. Analysis of both, the zooplankton as well as the phytoplankton population was done using the Bray-Curtis dissimilarity index, importance value index and Shannon-Weaver diversity index. The importance value index was found to provide a better evaluation of the plankton community than the diversity index. The phytoplankton population showed no correlation with nutrient availability as indicated by the correlation-regression analysis and the planktonic rhythm was not in tune with normal unpolluted conditions. The lake was classified as meso-polysaprobic using biological and chemical indices (Pantle and Buck index:3.5, BOD:60; DOM:9.3 and COD:130).

ABSTRACT

O domínio do Cerrado compreende uma área contínua nos estados centrais do Brasil e áreas disjuntas em outros estados, incluindo São Paulo. Essa vegetação ocupava originalmente 21 por cento do território brasileiro, restando atualmente apenas 21,6 por cento de sua extensão original. A área recoberta por essa vegetação em São Paulo cobria 14 por cento de sua área total e seus remanescentes recobrem menos de 1 por cento da ocorrência original dessa vegetação. Estudos recentes indicam que o valor da produtividade líquida no Cerrado Pé-de-Gigante (SP) constitui um pequeno dreno de carbono e indicou que a sazonalidade foi o fator determinante do valor observado. Os estudos dos fluxos de carbono em ecossistemas terrestres são raramente acompanhados de abordagens ecofisiológicas de modo a explorar a relação funcional das espécies que compõem o ecossistema e os valores líquidos obtidos para o mesmo. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar estruturalmente a vegetação presente na área de maior influência da torre de fluxo instalada no Cerrado Pé-de-Gigante, visando possibilitar estudos relacionados à quantificação em longo prazo da dinâmica dos fluxos de água, energia e CO2 na vegetação de Cerrado. Para isso foram levantadas 20 parcelas (10 x 10 m) em 0,2 ha de Cerrado, e amostraram-se todas as plantas com perímetro ao nível do solo >6 cm (exceto lianas e árvores mortas). A distribuição das classes de diâmetro e estrutura vertical, assim como os parâmetros fitossociológicos foram analisados. Encontramos 1451 indivíduos, distribuídos em 85 espécies, 52 gêneros e 31 famílias. A densidade absoluta e área basal foram de 7255 ind. ha-1 e de 7,9 m².ha-1, respectivamente. A família Leguminosae apresentou o maior número de espécies (13). O Índice de diversidade de Shannon (H') foi 3,27 nats.ind-1. A distribuição em classes de diâmetro mostrou uma curva de "J" invertido, estando a maioria dos indivíduos na primeira classe. Concluímos que a área deve ser classificada como Cerrado denso, devido principalmente à dominância pela espécie arbórea Anadenanthera falcata, cuja ocorrência no estado foi relatada apenas em locais com solos ricos em saturação de bases na região das Cuestas Basálticas, devido também à maior área basal dos indivíduos, comparando com outros fragmentos de Cerrado. Além da espécie citada, Myrcia lingua e Xylopia aromatica, apresentaram os maiores IVI (Valor de importância).


The Cerrado vegetation covers the Brazilian central areas (core area) which include extensive and continuous areas in the central States and some marginal areas in other States, including São Paulo, accounting originally for 21 percent of Brazilian territory. Nowadays, the remnants are 21,6 percent of its original coverage. About of 14 percent of the São Paulo State territory was originally covered with Cerrado vegetation, and today remnants account for less than 1 percent of the original distribution. Recent studies indicate that the net productivity in the Pé-de-Gigante Cerrado constitutes a small carbon sink, with seasonality playing a major role. The carbon flux studies in terrestrial ecosystems have rarely been accompanied by ecophysiological studies in order to explore the functional relationships among species, ecosystem and the values achieved. Therefore, our objectives were to characterize the vegetation structure in the meteorological and flux tower footprint. The flux tower allows studies related to long term measurements and dynamics of water, solar energy and CO2 fluxes in Cerrado vegetation. Plots (10 x 10 m) were established in 0.2 ha area of Cerrado and all vascular plants with stem perimeter at ground level >6 cm (except vines and dead individuals) were sampled. The distribution of diameter classes and vertical structure, as well as the phytosociological parameters were analyzed. We recorded 1,451 individuals, distributed in 85 species belonging to 31 different families. The absolute density and the basal area were 7,255 ind.ha-1 and 7.9 m².ha-1, respectively. Leguminosae showed the highest number of species (13). The Shannon's Index was 3.27. The distribution of diameter classes showed a curve in inverted "J", most of the individuals being in the initial classes. We concluded that the area must be classified as dense Cerrado, mainly due to Anadenanthera falcata dominance, which occurrence in São Paulo State was reported only in rich soil sites in Cuestas Basaltic regions and also due to major basal area of these individuals, comparing with other Cerrado vegetation sites. A. falcata, Myrcia lingua and Xylopia aromatica showed the highest IVI (Importance value index).
