ABSTRACT

The African Digital Health Library, (ADHL) is a collaborative project involving five African institutions namely Bamako University of Science and Technology, Kenya Methodist University, Universities of Ibadan, Nairobi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The University of Ibadan Nigeria component of the ADHL (ADHL-UI) is described in this paper. Funded by the Office of Global AIDS Coordinator of the United States Department of State, the goal of ADHL-UI is to store, preserve, make accessible through an institutional repository, theses and dissertations by postgraduate students of the institution's College of Medicine. The ADHL-UI has over 1000 theses and dissertations accessible on the internet. Creation of the ADHL-UI, a repository of theses and dissertations in the Medical Library, University of Ibadan, is a major contribution to research development and preservation of institutional scholarly heritage. Effective use by students and faculty will help in reducing duplication of research efforts and create visibility for the authors and the institution.

ABSTRACT

The rapid growth of Internet and increasing interest in its usage has led to an acceleration of digitisation of printed documents and making available born digital documents online. Zambia's research output is primarily in print and not much is disseminated globally. It is against this background that innovations for digital libraries have been started in several African countries, including Zambia. The overall objective of the African Digital Health Library Zambia was to increase the health content that is held in the University of Zambia Institutional Repository by digitising publications produced by various institutions in Zambia, with a vision of capturing over 6,000 current and historical materials. Equipment was acquired and sensitisation meetings were held with various stake holders to ensure successful project initiation and sustainability. Scanning and uploading of documents was done after a technical expert had trained both Library and Information Technology staff on Dspace software. Marketing the digital library within the institutions and nationally was also conducted. In June 2018 there were 266,838 downloads of materials. Challenges of collecting required materials from relevant stake holders and convincing them to make available their content were encountered in the process. Enhanced collaboration and sensitisation of stakeholders were essential in ensuring the successful implementation of the project.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this work is to compare two digital international institutional repositories to find convergences and divergences in regards to the administration and operation of data, information and content. Also, it contributes to broaden the panorama and knowledge related to the importance and impact of digital repositories in Higher Education Institutions (Instituciones de Educación Superior - IES). The repositories studied belong to the Dissemination Service of Intellectual Creation (Difusión de la Creación Intelectual - SEDICI), main institutional repository of La Plata National University (UNLP), Argentina and Kérwá, main institutional repository of the University of Costa Rica (UCR), Costa Rica. A methodological quantitative focus was developed to accomplish the investigation objective. The information was collected through questionnaires applied to the people responsible of the administration of both repositories and a bibliographical revision of electronic documents, such as articles published in congresses, international magazines, among others. The analysis was implemented following these criteria and characteristics: resources representation, interoperability, normalization, visibility, preservation, among others. It was concluded that digital institutional repositories have become an innovation trend for IES. They use and promote technological tools to produce significant changes in regards to information use and management. Also, the digital repositories analyzed converge in aspects such as: software, metadata, normalized numbers, resources representation, accessibility, identifier, author rights, contents deposit, searchers and preservation. They diverge in regards to: interoperability, digitalization process, remote deposit, visibility, licensing and divulgation.

ABSTRACT

he aim of this work is to describe alternatives introduced in EPUB 3 format to promote access to the academic and scientific institutional production by users with visual disabilities. The figure of the Institutional Repository is taken as starting line, understood as a space which hosts and disseminates this production, and whose objectives include maximizing its impact and fostering its visibility, both in the same line with the proposal of the study.Contributions in EPUB 3 format are analyzed and compared to its predecessors. Particularly, the existent extensions that are useful to optimize the voice synthesis for text to speech (TTS), the ability to add spare and multiple voices, and some of the available tools to visualize and reproduce TTS-enabled EPUB 3 documents. In this matter, the stress has been put on applications freely available for current mobile devices, in order to ensure that any potential user will be able to take advantage of these contributions. Lastly, the viability of implementing a circuit for accessible EPUB 3 documents generation is discussed, and further services for an institutional repository to offer from these tools are briefly mentioned.

ABSTRACT

After the institutional repository system was constructed using the open-source software Drupal, the team collaboration platform and institutional repository platform were integrated into a Web 2.0-based network plat-form on which the users can create their project groups and other users can be formed as dynamic virtual groups by joining the team group in which they work in collaboration. The team members submit the files to the project group in a sustained manner for its share and use during the ongoing project, and the files become the intellectual proper-ties of project group. The whole project group was sealed as a part of institutional repository after the project was completed, and the users can see how the project is completed at any time, thus helping the collection, store and use of intellectual properties.
