ABSTRACT

Sacral insufficiency fractures (SIFs) are no longer a rare type of fracture in the elderly. To date, SIFs have typically been treated conservatively. Sacroplasty has recently been used in treatment of SIFs, with a good result. In order to solve the problems of sacroplasty, the authors performed a new surgical technique, percutaneous iliosacral screw fixation with cement augmentation, for SIFs. Secure fixation of the screw in osteoporotic bone was achieved and biological bone union was obtained. We present this case with a review of the literature.

ABSTRACT

Intramedullary fixation using Gamma or Proximal Femoral Nail (PFN) for example becomes a popular fixation method for unstable trochanteric fracture. Due to the old age of patients with such fractures, extraction of these devices has not always been recommended after fracture healing. However, protruding metal or sliding lag screws can cause pain, which makes removal unavoidable. The authors present 2 cases of femoral neck fracture during ambulation after the removal of such devices.

ABSTRACT

Percutaneous sacroplasty is a technique, derived from percutaneous vertebroplasty, with minimal invasion and better safety for refractory sacroiliac pain. The procedure is involved with bone cement injected into the diseased sacral body under fluoroscopic or computed tomography guidance and in turn for stabilizing and strengthening the vertebral body with outcome of decrease or even complete relief of pain. The author introduces and comprehends the definition, preoperative imaging examinations, indications, contraindications, techniques and complications of the procedure.
