ABSTRACT

Objective: To study the characteristics and regularity of the improvement of early clinical symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) treated with Chinese medicine plus fumigation and absorption combined with super dose of vitamin C. Methods: We randomly divided 30 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 admitted by the Hubei medical team in our hospital since February 2020 into groups A, B and C, with 10 cases in each group. Group A was the control group. Group B was treated with traditional Chinese medicine and fumigation. Group C was the treatment group of traditional Chinese medicine plus fumigation and absorption combined with super dose of vitamin C. We analyzed the symptoms of fatigue, cough, dry throat, shortness of breath and the improvement of chest CT and nucleic acid detection, and compared the treatment status of each group. Results: The improvement degree and disappearance time of fatigue, cough, dry throat and shortness of breath in group B and group C were better than those in group A, and the effect of group C was better than that of group B (P0.05). Conclusion: The combination of traditional Chinese medicine and fumigation and absorption combined with super dose of vitamin C has a definite effect on the improvement of fatigue, cough, dry throat and shortness of breath in patients with COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

Objective To observe the efficacy and safety ofYiqi Huatan Granules combined with carbocisteine to reduce the acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods Totally 108 patients in the stationary phase of COPD with qi deficiency or merging phlegm blockage/blood stasis syndrome were randomly divided into two groups. Patients in the control group were treated with carbocisteine and inhaled bronchodilators on-demand, while patients in the treatment group were treated withYiqi Huatan Granules combined with carbocisteine and bronchodilators for 24 weeks. Times and severity of acute exacerbations of COPD, TCM syndrome scores, lung function, and 6-minute walking distances of the two groups during the treatment period were observed. Results The average times of acute exacerbations of COPD in the treatment group (0.33 ± 0.55) were fewer than the control group (0.62 ± 0.71);the average times of severe acute exacerbations of COPD in the treatment group (0.12 ± 0.33) were fewer than the control group (0.28 ± 0.45), with statistical significance (P<0.05). Comparison between the TCM syndrome scores before and after treatment, TCM total syndrome scores, breathless/dyspnea score, breath shortness and fatigue score, and 6-minute walking distance in the treatment group were better than the control group (P<0.05), with better safety. Conclusion The treatment ofYiqi Huatan Granules combined with carbocisteine for COPD patients can effectively decrease times and severity of acute exacerbations of COPD, and improve TCM syndrome scores and 6-minute walking distance.

ABSTRACT

Objective: In China, doctors at TCM hospitals and clinics often divide patients with a Western medicine (WM) disease into several syndrome classes from the TCM perspective and treat patients in different classes using different principles. A key problem is how to carry out the classification properly. We propose an evidence-based ap-proach for solving the problem where evidence is obtained by analyzing unlabeled symptom data using latent tree models.Method: In previous work, we have shown how latent tree analysis of symptom data can be used to identify TCM syndrome classes among patients with a WM disease. In the paper, we investigate how to establish classification rules for distinguishing between the classes. Results: We have applied the method to a data set about Vascular Mild Cognitive Impairment that involves 93 symptoms and 803 patients. Nine syndrome types are identified, along with the corresponding classification rules. Conclusions: An evidence-based approach to the TCM patient classification prob-lem has been developed. The approach can be used to answer the following questions about a WM disease: What TCM syndrome classes are there? What are the sizes of the classes? What are the statistical characteristics of each class? How can one differentiate between the different classes?

ABSTRACT

Objective To find out a treatment with high remission rate, long living period, and a good quality of life for elderly patients with multiple myeloma. Methods All patients were recruited into a treatment group(treated with traditional Chinese medicine, routine chemotherapy, and thalidomide)and a comparison group(treated with traditional Chinese medicine and routine chemotherapy). Results The total effective rate of the treatment group was 71.4%,higher than the comparison group(38.5%),but showing 110 statistical difference(P=0.128>0.05).Median survive time of two groups were 21.8 months and 12 months respectively,(P=0.001<0.01).The survival rate of 3 years and 5 years were 28.6%,15.4%and 7.1%,0 in the two groups respectively, without significant difference(0.317,1.000,both P>0.05).Conclusion The treatment group showed higher results in both complete remission rate(CR)and very good partial remission rate(VGPR)than the comparison group, demonstrating a better results in improving the patient's quality of life. The treatment group also had a higher value of the median survive time and the median progression-free surial time than the comparison group. The combined therapy of traditional Chinese medicine, routine chemotherapy and thalidomide is an ideal choice for both aged Patients or young MM patients who had no transplant conditions.

ABSTRACT

The understandings of Shanghai Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) expert team on preventing and treating severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) were introduced in this article.SARS belongs to epidemic febrile disease and the cause is wind warm pathogen or epidemic pathogenic factor. The diseased site is mainly in the lung and the basic pathogenetic features are obstruction of pulmonary vessels, impairment of qi and yin ,with atrophy of pulmonary resource dampness, blood stasis in more severe cases, resulting in dangerous symptoms such as choking sensation in chest, dyspnea and prostration.Six regimens of treatment according to different symptoms were set out.Based on the effectiveness of TCM in treating virus diseases and the experience of TCM in treating SARS, the advantages of integrating Chinese and Western medicine were put forward, such as blocking SARS progress, alleviating symptoms, reducing dosage of glucocorticoid and antibiotics, avoiding sequela. Finally, the progress of 3 TCM programs on preventing and treating SARS was introduced and the TCM oriented perspective hot point, pulmonary fibrosis, was discussed.
