ABSTRACT

The International University of Health and Welfare School of Medicine accepts 20 international students every year. In this paper, we report on the practice of “Medical Japanese Class” for these international students. The “Medical Japanese Class” is a class in which students learn medical terminology through listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities, and make presentations in Japanese based on the knowledge they have learned in English. This is a combination of the Language for Specific Purposes model and the Sheltered model, of Content-Based Language Instruction. We designed and implemented a lesson in which Japanese instructors used medical materials to introduce medical terminology and expressions. Medical faculty checked the application and correctness of medical content.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the psychological distress, and examine the effects of acculturative stress, positive coping, and negative coping and their interaction on psychological distress among international students in China. Methods: Totally 373 international students were surveyed from central China [being in China of (2. 2 ± 1. 7) years, 248 males, and 125 females]. Psychological distress was measured with the short version of Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-18), acculturative stress was measured with the Acculturative Stress Scale for International Students (ASSIS), and positive coping (PC) and negative coping (NC) were measured with the Cope Inventory (COPE). Results: The average score of BSI-18 was (0. 66 ± 0. 72). The BSI-18 scores were positively correlated with the scores of ASSIS and NC (r = 0. 49, 0. 31, Ps < 0. 001). Multiple regression showed that the scores of ASSIS, NC, and interaction of ASSIS and NC were positively correlated with the BSI-18 scores (β = 0. 43, 0. 19, 0. 26). Conclusion: Acculturative stress and negative coping are important related factors for psychological distress, and for students suffering higher acculturative stress, the effect of negative coping on psychological distress is larger.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Numerous research studies have examined the validity of GRE scores in predicting graduate success, however, some limitations still exist. This study targeted graduate engineering programs and investigated the validity of GRE scores in predicting graduate engineering GPA (GGPA). In addition, the differences in the validity of GRE scores between American and international students and between masters' and doctoral students were compared. The GRE's incremental predictive ability over undergraduate GPA (UGPA) and TOEFL scores was examined. Data were obtained from 1083 students from the engineering programs in a large, comprehensive midwestern university. Results indicated that GRE was useful in forecasting GGPA of graduate engineering students. The GRE scores explained more criterion variance for American students than for international students, but statistically significant differences were only found when GRE-Quantitative predicted GGPA. The GRE-Verbal and GRE-Quantitative scores had different patterns in predicting graduate grades for master's and doctoral students. UGPA was found to be a very strong predictor, and TOEFL scores were significantly correlated with the criterion variables. GRE scores, however, were found to have significant incremental validity over UGPA and TOEFL scores. TOEFL scores were less able to make predictions.

ABSTRACT

This article aims to analyze the logics of international student mobility in Quebec, as well as their professional projects after graduation and the cultural effects of this experience. This article demonstrates that strategic and "experiential" motives join those linked to an emigration project to Canada to support students' mobility logics. With regard to career projects after studies, it is observed that such projects are marked by uncertainty. If some students consider staying and working in Canada or returning to their home country, a large majority have difficulty in finding a satisfactory job and aiming for an international career. In terms of cultural effects of studies outside the country of origin, there is a more pronounced reflexivity, a highlight of individualization and acculturation as a personality dimension.

ABSTRACT

Purpose  This study aimed to explore the health behaviors and identify its related factors in international university students in Japan. Methods  A self-administered questionnaire was used, targeting 274 international students enrolled at one Japanese university. It included demographic information on financial status, social support, behaviors toward health promotion and healthcare seeking, and health literacy (HLS-EU-Q16). Those who consulted a doctor or had such intentions for diseases or injury were defined as a group characterized by healthcare seeking action. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and bivariate analysis. Results  Of the 274 students, 70 (25.5%) responded to the questionnaires. Almost half of them were Chinese (44.3%), had been staying in Japan for more than a year but less than five years (54.3%) and had concerns about financial issues (50.0%). With reference to the number of Japanese friends they could consult, 44.3% had fewer than five. The latter was significantly associated with health promoting behaviors (p = 0.026). Further, duration of stay in Japan was significantly associated with health care seeking behaviors (p = 0.034). Financial status and health literacy were not significantly associated with either behavior. Conclusions  Numbers of Japanese friends and duration of their stay may contribute to improve the health behaviors of international students in Japan. However, regardless of language ability, the health literacy of international students may not be utilized well enough in the host country. Providing more opportunities to international students to socialize with Japanese peers and to learn about Japanese health care systems earlier on their arrival could be highly beneficial to improve their health behaviors.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify international students' use of university health centers by individual characteristics and seasons. METHODS: This was a retrospective descriptive study using data obtained from the electronic record system of one university health center. The study participants were international undergraduate students who registered for any of two semesters between March 1, 2014 and February 28, 2015 and visited the university health center during their registration period. RESULTS: The most common reasons for visits were problems of head, eye, nose and throat systems, followed by respiratory system. Their visits mostly occurred in the fall and spring. The most frequently used services were distribution of oral medication followed by wound treatment. The number of visits per individual was statistically different by gender (u=-3.307, p=.001), but not by their major (chi2=.543, p=0.762) or nationality (chi2=5.518, p=.271). CONCLUSION: Further study is necessary to better define health needs and related factors for this unique population. The electronic record system provides great opportunities in development and application of need based health services for international students and for research in this area.
