ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: ObjectivesZZAlthough many studies have shown that cochlear implantation promotes restoration of adequate hearing and verbal ability, there is little research showing whether patients with cochlear implants (CI) adapted well to the society by forming a good interpersonal relationship. The purpose of this study was to investigate the interpersonal competence of college students who acquired good verbal ability through CI. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: Interpersonal competence was examined using the Korean version of interpersonal competence questionnaire. Participants were 23 college students with CI who had good verbal communication abilities. Their interpersonal competence was compared to that of 28 college students with normal hearing (NH). To identify the factors contributing to the interpersonal competence, regression analysis was performed using speech perception, vocabulary and speech intelligibility as independent variables. RESULTS: College students with CI showed significantly weaker interpersonal competence than those with NH. Among 5 sub-factors of interpersonal competence, assertion and conflict management were not significantly different between two groups and initiation, caring others, and appropriate disclosure of CI group were significantly weaker than NH group. But college students with CI who had normal vocabulary and Speech Intelligibility Ratings score of 5 showed good interpersonal competence, which was comparable to those with NH. CONCLUSION: College students with CI who acquired good verbal communication ability demonstrates lower interpersonal competence than those with NH. Therefore, it is necessary to support them to improve interpersonal competence as well as speech-language ability.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was designed to identify a path model that anticipates the interpersonal competence of nurses by anticipating factors that explain interpersonal competence within an organization, and analyzing the effects of these factors. A hypothetical model was formulated based on a literature review of interpersonal competence. For the study, influential factors were divided into two variables: exogenous variables including communication style, coaching leadership, and social support, and endogenous variables of self-efficacy, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment. METHODS: The sample included 202 hospital nurses. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS and AMOS. RESULTS: The overall fitness was good (chi2=74.707, p<.001), d.f=19, chi2/df= 3.932, GFI=.940, AGFI=.826, RMR=.009). Social support, self-efficacy, horizontal communication and organizational commitment directly affected the interpersonal competence of the nurses, and informal type of communication, horizontal, upward communication and coaching leadership indirectly effected the interpersonal competence of the nurses. Horizontal communication, social support, self-efficacy, and organizational commitment explained 46.5% of the variance in interpersonal competence of nurses. CONCLUSION: Based on the study results, nurses in hospitals need informal types of communication, horizontal, upward communication and coaching leadership to increase their interpersonal competence.

ABSTRACT

This research evaluated the family caregivers' burden regarding the care of psychiatric patients and its relation to social skills and assertiveness. The sample was composed of 53 family caregivers of patients who were treated in a community mental health service (CAPS type I). They were interviewed with the application of the Burden Scale BI, the Social Skills Inventory IHS-Del-Prette, the Assertiveness Scale RAS, and a Sociodemographic and Clinical Questionnaire. Results showed that family caregivers presenting higher degree of inhibition and shyness (RAS) had significantly higher burden scores. Multiple regression analysis showed that shyness was the main predictive factor for burden. No relation was found between burden and IHS-Del-Prette scores. Data indicated the need to implement psychoeducational programs in mental health services in order to increase caregivers' assertive behavior, so that they could develop a better relationship with patients and a more efficient search for social support, contributing to decrease burden...
