ABSTRACT

Abstract A quarter of Portugal's population is aged 65 years or over, mostly retired individuals. However, there is a lack of studies and instruments to facilitate retirement planning. This study aims to validate the Retirement Resources Inventory in Portugal to use it in future interventions. In total, 450 Portuguese retirees from all regions who responded to the inventory and sociodemographic questions participated in this study. According to the exploratory and confirmatory analyses, 23 items were found, confirming the four-factor model [χ 2 (gl) = 404.63(216); CFI = 0.90; TLI = 0.88; RMSEA = 0.06; SRMR = 0.06], with good evidence of internal and convergent validity. The first factor corresponded to physical and financial aspects, the second to social and family resources, the third to received support, and the fourth to emotional and cognitive resources. We recommend the replication of the RRI in a longitudinal study before and after retirement.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Purpose To identify the development of initial auditory skills in children with unilateral and bilateral cochlear implant during the first year of use. Methods Retrospective longitudinal study of medical records of children who received cochlear implant under the age of four, separated into two groups. The first, composed of children implanted unilaterally and the second, by children implanted and simultaneously. Data on the IT-MAIS scale (Infant-Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale) were collected before surgery and three months, six months and one year after surgery. These results were compared with the existing Clinical Markers. In addition, the family's classification was noted, according to the Family Involvement Assessment Scale. Results The data of 29 children with bilateral cochlear implant and 30 children with unilateral cochlear implant were evaluated. The IT-MAIS score of the two groups was similar to the Clinical Markers. Regarding the Family Involvement Assessment Scale, there was a difference, showing that families in the bilateral group were more involved. Conclusion In the first year of use of the cochlear implant, the development of children implanted bilaterally did not differ from the development of children implanted unilaterally, suggesting that initial auditory skills are likely to develop with unilateral auditory input.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The present study describes the wild bee population in the Puna province of the Andean Region, in the Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve, Arequipa, Peru. Sampling was carried out for seven months in three representative areas of the Polylepis forest and Yaretal ecosystem between 3900 to 4300 m above sea level using two methods (entomological net and pan traps [yellow plates]). A total of 545 specimens were collected, belonging to four families, ten genera, and 26 morphospecies. Halictidae presented the greatest abundance of individuals (475; 87.1 %), followed by Megachilidae (43 individuals; 7.7 %), Colletidae (21 individuals; 3.8 %), and Apidae (6 individuals; 1 %). The most abundant and diverse genus was Caenohalictus, with eight morphospecies and 466 individuals. In addition, two kleptoparasitic species were collected: Acanthopus and Sphecodes. The sampling areas below 4100 m showed greater species richness, whereas the sampling over 4100 m showed a decrease in diversity. Sampling by entomological net was the most effective method for determining species richness (21; 81 %), and the sampling by pan traps for determining individual abundance (485; 89 %). The results show the considerable richness of bee species in the high Andean areas and highlight the need for further studies of bees in this and other ecoregions of Peru.

ABSTRACT

The Estación Biológica Quebrada Blanco (EBQB) in north-eastern Peruvian Amazonia is a place where research has been conducted since 1984; mainly, on the ecology and behavior of primates, but, later inventories were realized for trees (>10 cm dbh), ferns and birds. The EBQB area is very little disturbed and located in a region of high biodiversity. Here we describe the history of EBQB, summarize the available information on its biodiversity and point out the potential of EBQB for future studies on the biodiversity and ecology of a broad spectrum of organisms.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective to characterize and reflect on the process of cultural equivalence and/or validation of vocal self-assessment instruments translated and adapted to the Brazilian Portuguese, used in clinical practice and scientific research. Research strategy The search of articles was carried out in the following databases: SciELO, LILACS, PubMed and "The Cochrane Library". Selection criteria The studies were selected regarding the presence of the descriptors cited in their title, abstract or in the list of descriptors; validation articles of a self-assessment instrument in voice or with the objective of performing cultural equivalence; to be directed to the Brazilian population; original studies with a sample of human beings; regardless of the age of the life cycle, type of dysphonia or vocal symptoms. Results Nine articles were selected. Quality of life in voice and vocal handicap were the most addressed constructs. Most validations occurred in the Southeast region of Brazil. The scores of the instruments is calculated by a simple sum of the answers given by the participants in the items; cutoff points are not always presented. The domains of the instruments, as well as the items that compose them, were maintained as presented in the instrument in its original. The most common statistic for instrument analysis was Cronbach's Alpha coefficient. Conclusion The constructs most addressed in the selected articles were quality of life in voice and vocal handicap index. The instruments were considered valid and sensitive for vocal self-assessment, even not considering the international proposals for validation of health instruments.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Among amphibian species from high elevation areas in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest there is a high percentage of threatened and endemic species, but there is still a relative scarcity of local inventories for these organisms. Here, we present data on anuran composition, relative abundance and estimated densities for leaf-litter frogs from an Atlantic Forest area within the APA Serra da Mantiqueira, in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, based on results of a short-term survey carried out at altitudes of 1,350-1,750 m, in November 2005 (with additional records from surveys made in 2010 and 2011). Three sampling methods were used during the 2005 survey: plot sampling, visual encounter surveys (VES; performed during the day, at the dusk, and at night), and pitfall traps with drift fences; only non-standardized visual searches were employed during the 2010 and 2011 surveys. We recorded 24 species, with the direct-developer Ischnocnema sp. (gr. lactea) being the most abundant. Most anurans (90% of all individuals) sampled by VES were captured during the crepuscular and nocturnal periods. The estimated density of the local leaf-litter frog assemblage based on plot sampling was 18.4 ind/100 m2, which is one of the highest values currently reported for Atlantic Rainforest areas. This is the first study analyzing the anuran fauna composition of an Atlantic Forest area within the APA Serra da Mantiqueira and adds to the body of knowledge on the fauna of the southern region of Rio de Janeiro state.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The goal of the present paper is to systematically review the use of the Operationalized Portage Inventory (OPI) instrument to measure children's development from 0-6 years, in Brazilian publications. Using the PRISMA-P methodology, databases were assessed in Portuguese (Capes, BVS-Psychology, BVS-Bireme, Redalyc, Google Scholar) from 2002 to 2016. Forty-two studies were analyzed in terms of goals, procedures, design, results and limitations. Twelve papers were characterized as descriptive, 14 were correlational, and 16 involved intervention assessment. Studies suggested the OPI to be useful in describing and/or evaluating repertoires of 976 children with 19 different syndromes and 7 diverse risk conditions. More methodological rigor is recommended in future studies using the OPI.

ABSTRACT

Abstract We present results from the analysis of data from 104 children with ages ranging from 16 to 30 months, living in Lima, Peru. The data was collected using a preliminary version of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories (CDI), Form II, adapted to Peruvian Spanish. The CDIs are parental reports that assess language through the presentation of a series of items to the parents, mainly in the form of a checklist. We aimed to (1) describe the composition of Peruvian children's productive lexicon at this age, (2) identify whether nouns were the most frequent class in their vocabulary, and also the class which increased the most with age, as is the case in Italian (Caselli et al., 1995; D'Odorico y Fasolo, 2007) and Mexican Spanish (Jackson-Maldonado et al., 1993); and (3) assess whether vocabulary size explained the level of grammatical development as in Peninsular and Mexican Spanish (Mariscal & Gallego, 2012; Thal, Jackson-Maldonado & Acosta, 2000). In order to do so, we analyzed the following data: age; maternal education level (as an indicator of socioeconomic status); vocabulary (represented by a list of more than 500 words that parents recognized as produced or not by their children); the mean length of the three longest utterances produced by the child as reported by parents; and sentence complexity, a measure of the level of structures produced by the child based on the parent's report. To achieve the first and second goals, words in the vocabulary list were classified according to grammatical class. Then, the percentage of production of each class of words was calculated, as well as the correlation between this percentage and age. Children's vocabulary was composed mainly of nouns, which represented 57 % of the production, followed by predicates (verbs and adjectives) and function words (pronouns, determiners, prepositions, conjunctions and connectives). Noun was the class of words that increased the most with age, showing the highest correlation with such variable (r = .72). Correlations between other types of words and age varied: it was also high for adjectives; but moderate for some classes and low for others. This showed that each type of word increased at different rates. Regarding the third goal, to assess the relationship between vocabulary size and level of grammatical development, two regression analyses were conducted to predict the variables mean-length-of-the-three-longest-utterances and sentence-complexity. For both analyses, age and maternal education level were entered in the first step, in order to control for their effect; and vocabulary was entered in the second step. Both models accounted for substantial amounts of variance and showed an important effect on vocabulary. The model with the mean-length-of-the-three-longest-utterances as the dependent variable accounted for 56 % of the variance. The first step explained 37 % of the variance (due to the contribution of both age and maternal education level), and the second step explained an additional 20 %. The model with sentence-complexity accounted for a higher percentage of the variance, 75 %. The first step explained 38 % of the variance, exclusively due to age; while the second step explained an additional 37 %. These results suggest a strong relationship between vocabulary and grammar. Further research is needed to confirm these results with direct measures of child production and more representative samples of children acquiring Peruvian Spanish, including speakers of dialects of other parts of the country. However, these results, preliminary as they are, shed light on the composition of vocabulary and its relationship with grammar in a variety of Spanish scarcely studied during early stages of development.

ABSTRACT

Abstract With the objective of knowing the diversity of species and varieties managed at the farm level by the farmers of 2 municipalities of Valle del Cauca, Colombia and the use that families give them, agrobiodiversity inventories were carried out and wealth indices were estimated and abundance of these species. Seven farms of the El Diamante, Alto del Oso and San Pablo villages in the Municipality of Restrepo and two farms in the Fenicia and Puerto Fenicia districts, in the Municipality of Riofrío were evaluated. The inventories and indices evaluated in the two municipalities show that there is great wealth and specific abundance, and that there are no dominant species. Agrobiodiversity inventories and the application of indexes should be constituted as indispensable tools for the design of the structure of sustainable systems as clear strategies for climate change mitigation based on the use and management of local agrobiodiversity and the generation of means of life for farmers, and as a contribution to food security and sovereignty

ABSTRACT

Between 2000 and 2016 we carried out 15 rapid biological inventories in remote areas of the Andean foothills and Amazon basin in Peru. During these inventories, 27 botanists collected 9397 fertile vascular plant specimens. By the end of 2017, more than half of these specimens had been identified to species. Of the 2303 species identified to date, 64 species and 2 genera (Dicorynia and Monopteryx) are new records for the flora of Peru. If this rate of discovery proves typical, the number of new records for Peru in the rapid inventory material could increase, which indicates that there is still much to discover in the Peruvian flora.

ABSTRACT

There has been an increasing number of inventories of gall-inducing arthropods in the Neotropics. Nonetheless, very few inventories have been carried out in areas where the flora is well documented, and records of galls from herbaria and sites outside the study area have seldom been utilized. In this study we provide a checklist of the native vascular plants of a 345 ha forest reserve in the Caribbean lowlands of Costa Rica and document which of these plants were found to harbor galls. The gall surveys were carried out between November 2013 and December 2016. We also cross-checked our plant list with the previous gall records from elsewhere in the country and searched for galls on herbarium specimens of dicots reported from the reserve. In total, we recorded 143 families and 1174 plant species, of which 401 were hosts of galls. Plant hosts of galls were found in the following non-mutually exclusive categories: 209 in our field sampling, 257 from previous records, and 158 in herbarium specimens. Of our field records of galls, 77 were new for the country, 77 were also found in the herbarium and 110 had been previously recorded in the country. Herbarium specimens and previous records are good indicators of potential gall hosts but around one quarter (40/158) of the gall records in the herbarium were ambiguous as to whether the tissue alteration was a gall or not. Plant family size was related to number of gall hosts, but most dicot families have similar proportions of gall host species. We concluded that more than a third of the native plants in the reserve are gall hosts, but this number increased to 44.93 % when only dicots were considered. Our results demonstrate the utility of providing complete plant inventories when conducting gall inventories, and of using herbarium specimens and previous galls studies to infer gall diversity in a specific area.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Bignoniaceae is a Pantropical plant family that includes 82 genera and 830 species of trees, lianas, and shrubs. The Tabebuia alliance (14 genera and 147 species) and tribe Jacarandeae (2 genera and 50 species) are both Neotropical and represent the largest clades of trees and shrubs in the family. Here, we present a taxonomic treatment for these two clades for the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. Overall, we documented 23 species distributed in seven genera, i.e., Cybistax Mart. ex Meisn., Godmania Hemsl., Jacaranda Juss., Handroanthus Mattos, Sparattosperma Mart. ex Meisner, Tabebuia Gomes ex DC., and Zeyheria Mart. Six taxa are new records for the state, i.e., Cybistax antisyphilitica (Mart.) Mart., Handroanthus capitatus (Bureau & K. Schum) Mattos, Handroanthus umbellatus (Sond.) Mattos, Jacaranda cuspidifolia Mart., Sparattosperma catingae A.H. Gentry, and Tabebuia stenocalyx Sprague & Stapf. Furthermore, S. catingae, previously thought to be endemic to the Caatinga of Bahia, was documented for the first time in the Atlantic Forest domain. We present identification keys and taxonomic descriptions for all genera and species, as well as provide illustrations and information on the geographic distribution, habitat, and phenology for all species.

No geral, nós documentamos 23 espécies distribuídas em 7 gêneros, i.e., Cybistax Mart. ex Meisn., Godmania Hemsl., Jacaranda Juss., Handroanthus Mattos, Sparattosperma Mart. ex Meisner, Tabebuia Gomes ex DC., e Zeyheria Mart. Mart., Handroanthus capitatus (Bureau & K. Schum) Mattos, Handroanthus umbellatus (Sond.) Mattos, Jacaranda cuspidifolia Mart., Sparattosperma catingae A.H. Gentry, e Tabebuia stenocalyx Sprague & Stapf.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Emotional intelligence relates to the ability to adequately perceive and understand emotions and to manage them in an adaptive and constructive manner. Emotion regulation is part of the construct and is traditionally assessed by way of hypothetical stories, which are similar to self-reports. Although developed prior to the proposal of the emotional intelligence construct, projective techniques, which are considered performance instruments, also feature indicators of emotion regulation. The present study's aim was to discover which variables in Pfister's Color Pyramid Test would be associated with an indicator of cognitive emotion regulation in the Zullige. In kblot Test. Ninety-eight people participated in the survey, 57.1% of which were women. Linear regression analysis showed that the frequencies of Pure Carpet and Bored Carpet (both negative) in the Pfister test were predictors of the Zulliger emotion-regulation formula. It is believed that aspects of emotional intelligence can also be found in projective techniques. The association between Pfister's and Zulliger's variables is discussed as an indicator of psychological health.

ABSTRACT

This research aims to develop the "Inventário de Práticas Maternas Alienantes" (Maternal Alienating Practices Inventory) and provide validity evidence based on internal structure. Therefore, two studies were carried out: in study 1, participants were 200 divorced mothers from different cities in the state of Paraíba, Brazil, and their average age was 35 years (SD = 9.06). Exploratory Factor Analysis showed that the Maternal Alienating Practices Inventory is a one-factor structure instrument with internal consistency of 0.83. In study 2, participants were 189 divorced mothers from different cities in state of Paraíba, and their average age was 37 years (SD = 10.69). Confirmatory Factor Analysis confirmed a one-factor structure of the instrument [χ² = 141,05, χ²/gl = 4,03, GFI = 0,87, CFI = 0,88, TLI = 0,85, RMSEA (IC90% = 0,10 - 0,14) = 0,12, CAIC = 265,89 and ECVI = 0,96]. It was concluded that the Maternal Alienating Practices Inventory is an instrument with psychometric properties, and therefore it can be used with caution in future studies.

ABSTRACT

Despite the anthropic changes in the Colombian Andes, there are still several relicts of native ecosystems with conservation value, which are the only habitat remnants for wildlife in areas near large cities. We present results of a research conducted at the Passiflora private Reserve (near Bogota) which aimed to evaluate the diversity of the community of non-flying mammals. Combining diverse methods, we found 17 mammal species, belonging to seven orders, suggesting a complex mammal community despite the human intervention in the area. Besides, we highlight the presence of rare or endemic species such as Olallamys albicauda, Cuniculus taczanowskii and Leopardus tigrinus. We conclude that despite the transformation of the Andes, it is still possible to find representative elements of Andean mammal fauna, even in private small reserves, adding value to these particular initiatives, which complement the government conservation efforts.

ABSTRACT

The Upper Paraguay River Basin is located in the center of South America and harbors one of the largest wetland in the world, known as Pantanal. This floodplain is surrounded by uplands, which presently have most of their area converted into pastures or monocultures, besides being poorly known scientifically. Also, most of these upland areas are considered conservation priorities. Here we present a list of anuran species from a savanna-like area (municipality of Camapuã, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil) inserted in the uplands surrounding the Pantanal floodplain, in the Upper Taquari River sub-basin, and evaluate the effectiveness of the sampling effort. Data were obtained through active searches in 22 plots in aquatic habitats, during the rainy season (from December 2009 to April 2010). We found 26 species, in four families. Although sampling effort was found to sufficiently represent the local anuran assemblage, future inventories in this region should ideally include samplings during the dry and early rainy seasons, and include both active and passive capturing methods.
