ABSTRACT

To clarify the correlation between pulse, appearance of the tongue and abdominal palpation signs as measured by Kampo medicine diagnostic techniques, we investigated 488 cases who received health screening. In addition we investigated the effects of smoking and drinking alcohol on pulse, tongue and abdominal palpation signs, and also the correlation between the findings of blood biochemical tests, and the pulse and appearance of the tongue, and obtained the following results.
1) In normal pulse the abdominal power and the tension of lower abdominal wall elevate, and the subjective palpitations of the upper umbilicus and the fluid sound in the stomach upon palpation were faint.
2) In elevated pulse abdominal power increased and the subjective palpitations of the lower umbilicus were faint.
3) As the oppressive pain on bilateral area near the umbilicus increased, the petechia often occurred.
4) The epigastric throbbing pulsation over epigastric region showed the positive correlation with transverse dehiscence.
5) Positive correlation was shown between the oppressive pain on the left area near the umbilicus and the purple tongue coating.
6) Smokers are apt to have red or purple tongue and tend to show yellow, thick, or ? residue-like (_??__??_) tongue coating. During abdominal palpation the positive correlation was shown between the frequency of smoking and the tonus of the left rectus abdominis muscle.
7) The amount of drinking alcohol and the abdominal power show positive correlation, and negative correlation with the subjective palpitations of the upper umbilicus.
8) The value of hemoglobin and hematocrit were often increased when a red tongue coating, purple tongue coating, petechia or a thick tongue coating were shown, and were decreased in ? emaciation (_??__??_).
9) The value of amylase showed a negative correlation with the red, thick, ??_??__??_, ? residue-like (_??__??_) tongue coating.

ABSTRACT

Topical steroid application is widely used in the treatment of discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), but response is usually poor. A 39-year-old woman was given the Kampo (Japanese herbal) formulas Hochu-ekki-to and Keishi-bukuryo-gan according to the principles of Kampo diagnosis. Topical steroids were not employed. The erythema associated with DLE had visibly decreased by the third week of administration, and disappeared completely after seven months of treatment.
For maximum effectiveness, Kampo formulas should usually be selected through the Kampo diagnostic process.

ABSTRACT

Carbamazepine (CBZ) is widely used for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia (TN), however, it is associated with some side effects. A 61-year-old woman was given CBZ to relieve TN pain. The pain was relieved immediately, but on the third day of CBZ treatment, skin rash developed, and the drug was discontinued. She then received the Kampo (Japanese herbal) medical formula Keishi-ka-jutsubu-to according to the principles of Kampo diagnosis. The pain was completely controlled without any side effects.
For maximum effectiveness, Kampo formulas should always be selected through the Kampo diagnostic process.

ABSTRACT

We tried to clarify the effect of traditional Chinese medicine in the cases of diabetic retinopathy. The 12 male patients and 21 female patients of diabetic retinopathy are administered Kampo extracts.
Most of the patients were classified as a simple type or a preproliferative type. These patients were divided into three types of pathological conditions diagnosed by Traditional Chinese Medicine such as “deficiency of Qi” “Yin-deficiency” and “deficiency of Oi and Yin” accompanied stagnation of pathological blood.
After the administration of Kampo extract for over 6 months, the effects were recognized in more than 80% of the patients from the observation on absorption of hemorrhage and white flecks of the retina and the improvement of visual acuity.
The basic pathological conditions should be considered for prescription of formulations for diabetic retinopathy.

ABSTRACT

The effect of Byakko-ka Ninjin-to-on xerostomia in elderly patients and the relationship between the improvement of subjective symptoms and kampo diagnosis were studied. Xerostomia improved in 60 percent of 30 patients treated with Byakko-ka-Ninjin-to. There were significantly more patients who were less advanced in years and with a good constitution in the effective group than in the non-effective group.
Although the occurrence of appetiteoss was significantly higher in the non-effective group, there was no significant difference between the groups with respect to the occurence of constipation, diarrhoea, boborysmus, upper abdominal bloatedness or cold constitution. No significant differences between the groups were shown in the occurrence of oral kampo diagnosis such as bitter taste in the mouth, thirst, stickiness in the mouth, and mucosal dryness.
From these results it is concluded that Byakko-ka-Ninjin-to is effective for elderly patients who are not too advanced in year and who have a good constitution and (sthenia).
