ABSTRACT

It is believed that the fundamental pathogenesis of the connective tissue diseases-associated interstitial lung disease (CTD-ILD) is kidney essence deficiency, with lung collateral obstruction throughout the disease, and environmental toxin pathogen is the important causative factors for the development of CTD-ILD. This article proposed to restore origin and alleviate bi (痹) for CTD-ILD, for which restoring origin means tonifying the lungs, spleen and kidneys to bank up the roots and consolidate the original qi, with modified Erxian Decoction (二仙汤) plus Liu Junzi Decoction (六君子汤); alleviating bi means expelling wind and dredging collaterals, and eliminating the mass to restore the smoothness of the lung collaterals, with paired medicines of Chuanshanlong (Dioscorea nipponica)-Dilong (Kalanchoe pinnata), Vinegar-processed Sanleng (Sparganium stoloniferum)-Vinegar-processed Ezhu (Curcuma zedoaria), and stem-type medicines, and emphasized on removing the environmental toxin pathogens to facilitate the recovery of healthy qi.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo observe the effects for vascular dementia (VD) of kidney essence deficiency among acupuncture at five mind points combined with modified kidneydecoction, simple acupuncture at five mind points and simple modified kidneydecoction.

METHODSA total of 180 VD patients were randomly assigned into a combination group, an acupuncture group and a herb group, 60 cases in each one. The conventional western medication and rehabilitation training were for all the patients. The modified kidneydecoction was used in the herb group; acupuncture at Baihui (GV 20) and Sishencong (EX-HN 1) was applied in the acupuncture group; the above two methods were for the cases in the combination group. Acupuncture was used for 7 courses, twice a day, and 5 days as a course. The hasegawa dementia scale (HDS), the brief screening scale for dementia (BSSD) and the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) were applied before and after treatment. The serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) were detected before and after treatment. The effects were evaluated.

RESULTSThe total effective rate of the combination group was 91.7% (55/60), which was better than 68.3% (41/60) in the herb group and 78.3% (47/60) in the acupuncture group (both<0.05). After treatment, the scores of HDS, BSSD and MMSE were higher than those before treatment in the three groups (all<0.05), and the scores in the combination group were superior to those in the other two groups (all<0.05). SOD and CGRP increased and LPO decreased after treatment in the three groups (all<0.05), and the results in the combination group were better (all<0.05). .

CONCLUSIONAcupuncture at five mind points combined with modified kidneydecoction for VD is better than simple five mind acupuncture and simple modified kidneydecoction.

ABSTRACT

Objective To make a tinnitus matching-based observation of the clinical therapeutic effect of acupuncture on tinnitus of kidney essence deficiency type. Methods Sixty patients with tinnitus of kidney essence deficiency type were randomized to groups A and B, 30 cases each. Group A received acupuncture based on syndrome differentiation- based point selection and group B, acupuncture based on disease differentiation-based point selection. Hearing condition was assessed by pure tone hearing threshold and tinnitus matching (tinnitus frequency and loudness matching test) in the two groups of patients before and after treatment. Results There were statistically significant pre-/post- treatment differences in various thresholds in pure tone audiometry in the two groups (P<0.05). There were statistically significant post-treatment differences in partial thresholds in pure tone audiometry (500 Hz, 750 Hz, 1000 Hz and 2000 Hz) between Group A and group B (P<0.05). Tinnitus matching had no statistically significant pre-/post-treatment difference within the two groups and no statistically significant post-treatment difference between the two groups (P>0.05). There was a statistically significant pre-/post-treatment difference in tinnitus loudness matching in the two groups (P<0.01). There was a statistically significant post-treatment difference in tinnitus loudness matching between Group A and group B (P<0.05).Conclusions Acupuncture is an effective way to treat tinnitus of kidney essence deficiency type. The therapeutic effect of syndrome differentiation-based acupoint selection is better than that of disease differentiation-based acupoint selection.

ABSTRACT

Primary osteoporosis (POP) is one of the most common diseases in the elderly people resulting in high risk of fracture and poor quality of life. In addition to the pathological changes in bone mass, most of the POP patients also suffer from Chinese medicine (CM) syndromes of Shen (Kidney) essence deficiency. Shen essences are highly related to bone. Shen essence deficiency plays an important part in the development of POP and a better diagnosis of POP could be made by combining CM syndromes with Western medicine risk factors. Treatments of POP should aim at both increasing the bone mass and relieving the syndromes of Shen essence deficiency. Clinical study confirmed that treating POP patients with Shen-tonifying herbs could increase the bone mass and relieve the CM syndromes of POP patients. Basic researches clarified the mechanism by which Shen-tonifying herbs increased bone mass in animal models. The mechanisms by which Shentonifying herbs relieve the CM syndromes are still in investigation.

ABSTRACT

This study was aimed to establish an objective and quantitative index system and standards of diag-nosis and treatment on the syndrome of liver-kidney essence deficiency for chronic liver diseases , in order to improve the level of diagnosis and treatment , clinical efficacy and service capabilities in the prevention and treatment of chronic liver diseases in traditional Chinese medicine ( TCM ) . Modern biological indicators of liver damage and liver regeneration were used as objective and quantitative indicators to study the syndrome of liv-er-kidney essence deficiency . And the syndrome of liver-kidney essence deficiency , which was used to be considered as a recessive syndrome, was finally turning into a dominant syndrome . Hence , the symptom i-dentification can be accurate . The establishment of an objective and quantitative index system and standards of diagnosis and treatment of liver-kidney essence deficiency , which was based on biological indicators such as indicators of histological damage in liver , indicators of hypohepatia , indicators of aregeneratory and indicators of liver dysfunction . According to all indicators , a dynamic monitoring was given on the development law of the syndrome of liver-kidney essence deficiency . All indicators provided references for the prognosis determina-tion and syndrome differentiation . It was concluded that the objective and quantitative research on the syn-drome of liver-kidney essence deficiency in chronic liver diseases is an effective way to improve the level of diagnosis and treatment, clinical efficacy and service capabilities in the prevention and treatment of chronic liver diseases in TCM , which is worth further study .
