ABSTRACT

In the circumstances of overflowing numbers of medical journals, progress of their own medical journal is one of the primary concerns of many medical societies. Among the 46-year-history of Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society (JKNS), it undertook a period of important transition and preparation to take off for journal with international reputation during the period from 2001 to 2006. The overall process of manuscript handling, peer review, and editorial work has undergone systematic improvement. Workshops for authors, reviewer and editors were held, which were very helpful to improve the quality of submitted manuscript, peer review and editorial processing. Articles on the history, current status of the JKNS, citations and the change of proportion of types of articles were published, which provided insight about present condition and direction for further progress. It was changed into English journal in 2005. These efforts resulted in registration of the journal Chemical Abstract Service in 2005 and Science Citation Index Expanded in 2008 and SCOPUS in 2009. Now JKNS has become international journal, with about half of the submitted manuscripts from abroad, with increasing impact factor. Along with the effort of Korean Neurosurgical Society (KNS) members and support of KNS, dedication of Professor Dong Gyu Kim for the progress of JKNS is worth remembering, who served as Editor-in-Chief of JKNS during this period.

ABSTRACT

The authority and reputation of a medical journal is based on the number of received citations. Korean Medical Citation Index (KoMCI) provides information about citations of Korean medical journals since 2002. All six issues of KoMCI (from 2000 to 2005) were used for analysis. Citations, impact factor, and their changes were evaluated. We compared the data of Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society(JKNS) with other Korean medical journals. The impact factor(IF) of 2005 maintained increased value since 2004, although the impact factor excluding self citation(ZIF) returned previous low value. Improvement in proportion of Korean citations and in proportions of non-self received citations were encouraging changes. Although there were some improvements, the status of JKNS with respect to ZIF is still behind other Korean medical journals selected for comparison. Improvement of the status of JKNS by aid of KoMCI and enhanced reputation of KoMCI by its positive influence on JKNS or other Korean medical journals will be beneficial to members and medical societies of Korea.

ABSTRACT

Since the authors participated in the editorial committee in October 2001, many dramatic changes have been introduced to the Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society(JKNS). The format, the external appearance, the editorial system, and the reviewing process have been transformed with new standpoints to enhance the quality and to raise the level of JKNS. The authors reviewed papers published on JKNS in 2006 with special interest on the changes of JKNS during last five years. In total, 186 articles were published on JKNS in 2006. Because the editorial committee asked two review articles to renowned neurosurgeons, there were 184 peer-reviewed articles. Eighty seven clinical articles, eighty one case reports, seven laboratory investigations, four special articles and five technical reports were published. This distribution changed from the previous year with marginal value of statistical significance (p=0.101). The ratio of the original articles (laboratory investigations and clinical articles) decreased to 51.1% from 57.5% of 2005 but the difference was not statistically significant (p=0.222). The number of laboratory investigations significantly decreased to 7 (3.8%) from 19 (10.4%) of 2005 (p=0.014). Other changes such as number of authors per article, number of institutes which published papers on JKNS have been examined to assess the trend and/or change in characteristics of papers published on JKNS.

ABSTRACT

One of the biggest change in the history of the Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society(JKNS) had been introduced in 2005. From January 2005, all manuscripts submitted to JKNS should be written in English. This new regulation was followed by many changes in characteristics of the papers published on JKNS in 2005. The authors present an analysis of papers published on JKNS and compared with those of 2004 and 2003. In total, 184 articles were published in 2005. Since a review article was requested by the editorial office to the authors, 183 articles were peer reviewed. Eighty five clinical articles, 75 case reports, 19 laboratory investigations, two special articles and two technical reports were printed. This distribution was not statistically different from 2004's distribution (p=0.67), even though the ratio of clinical articles was decreased to 46.4% from 54.4%. Due to the change in language specification, English articles were increased with statistical significance (p<0.001). There were several events related with copyright of the contents of the papers published on JKNS. We think these are some good points came with change in official language to English. General trends of the papers seemed to be in the right way.

ABSTRACT

The authors analyze the citation of Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society, based on Korean Medical Citation Index(KoMCI) from 2000 to 2003. The impact factor of Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society(JKNS) was 0.079 at 2000, and the score was below average among 69 KoMCI articles. The impact factor remained about the same value at 2001, 2002. However, it rised to 0.176 at 2003. This increase in citation was mostly by self-citation. Although the impact factor showed some improvement, yet it needs more time to conclude that the status of JKNS is in steady state of improvement. In order to make JKNS as a journal with high reputation and authority, the effort of every members of Korean Neurosurgical Society is essential.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Criteria for evaluating the results of treating low back pain vary widely. We examined the methods measuring the outcome in the papers of Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society. METHODS: We selected all published articles describing the methods measuring the outcome of low back pain in the journal. They were classified into 3 periods such as period 1 for volume 1-20, 2 for volume 21-25, and 3 for volume 26-28. RESULTS: There are 25 articles in period 1, 44 in period 2, and 30 in period 3. The outcome was classified into 0 to 5 classes by more than 15 different methods. Although the terms and descriptive criteria differ, 4 classes were the most common classification, being 16 in period 1, 39 in period 2, and 19 in period 3. The outcome was usually measured by authors' own method in period 1. In period 2, criteria by Gill et al was most commonly used along with many different criteria. Criteria by Prolo et al became a common method in period 3. CONCLUSION: Varying methods compromised comparative analyses of outcome. A more simple and universally applicable criteria is necessary to facilitate comparisons among various methods of treatment.

ABSTRACT

The Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society is the unique official journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society. However, it is not yet indexed in the Index Medicus or Medline. The author investigated the accuracy of the references in the Jourmnal of Korean Neurosurgical Society Volume 26 and frequency of citation. In 1997, 240 articles published in the Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society. The average number of references and frequency of citation were evaluated. Accuracy of the references was examined according to the instructions for the contributors which was revised at 1995. The references were described correctly in 104 articles(43.3%). In 136 articles(56.7%), there was at least one descriptive error. The most common error was an incorrect abbreviation of the journals, which was found in 87 articles (36.3%). Incorrect description of the books or chapters in a book was found in 62 articles(25.8%). Describing more than three authors was found in 31 articles(12.9%). There were some other faults, such as an incorrect author's name, omitting an article in the references, wrong order, or different description of the pages. The average number of references were 27.1 in total. The average number of Korean references were 1.3, and that of the Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society was 0.93. It shared only 3.43% of all references. Only 108 articles (45.0%) cited at least one Korean reference. The number of articles citing the Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society was 97(40.4%). It is an honor to publish an article in the official journal of his own academic society. However, submitting an articles which do not follow the instructions and publishing an inadequate article without proper correction would pull down the quality and the value of the journal. It is important to teach the way how to prepare an article. Meticulous review of an article is essential to improve the quality of the journal. It is also necessary to monitor the reviewer's missing.

ABSTRACT

Tables and figures are very useful tools to support the author's point or opinion. It should be made according to instructions for the authors of the given Journal. The Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society requires simple and clear English titles and explanations for the tables, figures and photos, which should be attached at the end of the manuscript. The author examined correctness of the tables and figures in the Jormnal of Korean Neurosurgical Society Volume 26. In 1997, 240 articles published in the Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society. All 240 articles used at least one table or a figure. Tables were used in 157 articels, of which 107 articles(68.2%) have at least one incorrect table. Blanks in the field(26.2%), omitting the column headings(25.2%), and incorrect footnotes(19.6%) were common errors in the tables. Figures were used in 208 articles, of which 31 articles(14.9%) have at least one incorrect figure. Identifiable name or hospital number(35.5%), wrong numbering(29.0%), and duplication of tables and figures (19.4%) were common errors in the figures. It is important for the contributors to keep the instruction. To improve the quality of the journal, proper education for the manuscript and meticulous review of an article are necessary. It may be useful to illustrate an example of a table in the instruction of the Jormnal of Korean Neurosurgical Society.

ABSTRACT

The author reviewed references of the articles published in the Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society(J Kor Neurosurg Soc), which is the only official journal of the Korean Neurosurgical Society. The number and descriptive methods of the references, and the instructions to contributors were studied. Some faults in the articles and the instructions were pointed out to improve the journal. Overall, 555 articles(30.0%) referenced articles published in the J Kor Neurosurg Soc. The number of referenced articles publishted in the journal was 1,223. The ratio of referenced articles published in the J Kor Neurosurg Soc to the total number of references was 3.0%. The number of the articles referencing articles published in the J Kor Neurosurg Soc was one in Volume 2, but it became 64 in Volume 17. Such tendency to increase seems to be continued. However, descriptive methods of references and the abbreviations of the journals were extremely variable. For the consistant reference, some correction of the instructions were proposed.
