ABSTRACT

Aims: This study investigated Length-weight relationships and condition factors of fish species in Ebrie Lagoon (Aghien-Potou sector, C魌e d扞voire) Place and Duration of Study: Ebrie Lagoon (Aghien-potou sector) from April 2019 to March 2020. Methodology: study was conducted during 3 to 4 days continuously in Ebrie Lagoon (Aghien-Potou Sector). Furthermore, monthly fish samples were collected from commercial fishing area at random using gillnets, cast nets, traps, hooks and beach seines. Results: All Length-Weight regressions were highly significant with the coefficient of determination (r2) ranging from 0.61 in Schilbe mandibularis to 0.90 in Monodactylus sebae and Chrysichthys maurus. An isometric growth was observed for most of species except three of them namely Ethmalosa fimbriata, Pseudotolithus elongatus, and polydactylus quadrifilis. The k values varied from 0.19�001 in S. melanotheron to 6.10�3 in Monodactylus sebae. The values of b and k denote that the Ebrie lagoon could provide a favourable environment and suitable habitat for the growth of those fish species. Conclusion: The study provides basic information on length-weight parameters for twenty major fish species collected from Ebrie lagoon (Aghien-Potou sector). Three species namely Ethmalosa fimbriata, Pseudotolithus elongatus and Polydactylus quadrifilis exhibited a trend of positive growth whereas seventeen fish species showed isometric growth. The condition factor k was superior to 1 for 75% of the fish species and inferior to 1 for 25 % of the fish species. These growth trends denote that the lagoon could provide a favourable environment and suitable habitat for the growth of those fish species. Thus it would be interesting to create a protected area near the lagoon in order to ensure the protection of fish species.

Our results do not reveal significant influence of the tide and seasonal variation as factors affecting the Cladocera assemblage. Five Cladocera species were found in the Araruama Lagoon, only in stations 11 and 12 where they reached an average of 1,799 ± 3,103 ind. m-3. The mean of the Shannon Diversity Index was 0.45 ± 0.2. The species that stood out in terms of frequency and abundance were: Penilia avirostris (frequency of occurrence: 71%), followed by Pseudevadne tergestina (41%). The same species also stood out in terms of relative abundance, Penilia avirostris (87%) and Pseudevadne tergestina (11%). The absence of Cladocera in the innermost parts of the lagoon suggests that their entrance to these locations is possibly inhibited by the salinity and temperature gradient of the lagoon, being the main factors influencing the dynamics of the Cladocera assemblages.


Os cladóceros representam um importante grupo de zooplâncton, devido ao seu destaque sazonal em termos de abundância e à sua contribuição no controlo da produção primária (fitoplâncton). Em escala global, há poucos estudos com Cladocera em ambientes hipersalinos. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a variação espaço-temporal da assembleia de Cladocera em um gradiente de salinidades da Lagoa de Araruama. As amostras foram coletadas em meses aleatórios, durante um período de quatro anos, em 12 estações fixas na Lagoa de Araruama, utilizando uma rede de plâncton WP2 equipada com um fluxômetro. Os nossos resultados não revelam uma influência significativa da maré e da variação sazonal como fatores que afetam a assembleia de Cladocera. Cinco espécies de Cladocera foram encontradas na Lagoa de Araruama. A assembleia apresentou maior densidade absoluta estações 12 e 11, atingindo uma a média de 1.799 ± 3.103 inds-3. A média do Índice de Diversidade de Shannon foi de 0,45 ± 0,2. As espécies que se destacaram em termos de frequência e abundância foram: Penilia avirostris (frequência de ocorrência: 71%), seguida de Pseudevadne tergestina (41%). As mesmas espécies também se destacaram em termos de abundância relativa Penilia avirostris (87%) e Pseudevadne tergestina (11%). A ausência de Cladocera nas partes mais interiores da lagoa sugere que a sua entrada nestes locais é possivelmente inibida pela salinidade e gradiente de temperatura da lagoa, sendo os principais fatores que influenciam a dinâmica da assembleia de Cladocera.

ABSTRACT

Aims@#This study was aimed to isolate and characterize biosurfactant producing bacteria from Mile 2 and Ologe Lagoon which are sinks for domestic and industrial waste waters and potential source of value added bioresources such as biosurfactants, hydrocarbon degraders and organisms with potential for biotechnological applications.@*Methodology and results@#Physicochemical parameters of the two lagoon waters were analyzed using standard procedures. Bacteria were isolated using enrichment techniques on 1% Escravos light crude oil, palm oil and groundnut oil on mineral salt medium (MSM). Biosurfactant production by the isolates was assayed by hemolytic activity, oil spread test, blue agar test and emulsification activity. Isolates were identified using their colony morphologies and biochemical characteristics, while the antibiotic susceptibility of the isolates was determined using multidisc. The physicochemistry of the lagoon water showed high nitrate content of 15.7 mg/L and 19.6 mg/L for Mile 2 and Ologe Lagoon, respectively. Total hydrocarbon content (THC) of both lagoon waters was low, with values 0.53 mg/L for Mile 2 Lagoon and 0.44 mg/L for Ologe Lagoon. The predominant genera of bacteria identified include Micrococcus, Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Stomatococcus and Moraxella. A total of 23 bacterial isolates were tested for hemolytic activity, of which 13 showed β-hemolysis which is presumptive for biosurfactant production, 5 showed α-hemolysis and the remaining 5 exhibited γ-hemolysis. Majority of the isolates were positive for oil spread assay and blue agar test (19) indicating production of anionic biosurfactant. The isolates showed good emulsification activity; AGG3 (67.7%), AGG1 (62.3%), AGG2 (60%), AGG4 (60%), MTP2 (56%), AGC4 (54%) and the least emulsification value of 23.3% for strain AGP1. Most of the isolates were susceptible to ciprofloxacin, perfloxacin and showed resistance to septrin and erythromycin.@*Conclusion, significance and impact of study@#This study showed that Mile 2 and Ologe Lagoon are a potential source of biosurfactant producers with diverse emulsification properties and prospective industrial applications. This would have implication for economic empowerment, as well as sustainable and environmentally friendly clean-up technology in both locally and globally.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The taphonomic attributes of a faunal assemblage provide information about which agents affect the distribution and preservation of ancient or newly formed biogenic materials during depositional and post-depositional processes. Actuotaphonomy thus is a valuable tool for reconstructing fossil communities because it establishes analogies between observable processes in the present and those that happened in the past. Objective: The taphonomic attributes of a marginal marine environment were analyzed to assess the origin of fragmentation, bioerosion, and encrustation processes and the role of these characteristics in the deterioration of current sediment accumulations of mollusks (gastropods and bivalves). Methods: The material studied was collected from a shell-remain accumulation called "El Conchal" in the Laguna de Mandinga, Veracruz, a lagoonal complex located in the Gulf of México. Taphonomic analysis included fragmentation, bioerosion, and encrustation features on recent gastropods and bivalve's shells. The categories of each attribute were classified in three degrees: poor, regular and good. The analysis was performed only in complete shells. Results: A bulk sample of 1 697.9 g was processed, recovering 1 165 complete specimens, of which 5 genera of bivalves and 4 genera of gastropods were identified. The fragmentation and bioerosion were classified as regular (grade 1), this may be the results of the water energy in the environment, that permits a constant rework, and exhumation of the remains at the lagoon's water-sediment interface; meanwhile, three eroders were identified to ichnogenus level: Entobia, Oichnus, and Caulostrepsis, being Caulostrepsis the least abundant. The encrustation was classified as poor (grade 2); the result can be interpreted based on the ecosystem intrinsic conditions that do not allow many encrusting organisms to develop properly. The encrusters are represented by calcareous organisms including bryozoans, serpulids tubes, and barnacles. The results yielded an actuotaphonomic model that could be applicable to analogous ecosystems in Laguna de Mandinga (Mandinga Lagoon), in Veracruz, Mexico. Conclusions: In marine marginal environments as in lagoon areas the encrustation does not have an important role in the preservation or destruction of shelly assemblages, being taphonomically more important than fragmentation and bioerosion as potentially destructive agents that can be a source of loss of fidelity in the fossil record.


Introducción: Los atributos tafonómicos de los conchales proveen información acerca de cuáles agentes afectan la distribución y preservación de la acumulación de materiales biogénicos recientes o fósiles, especialmente durante las etapas deposiconales y postdeposicionales. La actuotafonomía es una herramienta valiosa para la reconstrucción de las comunidades fósiles, para establecer analogías entre los procesos observables en el presente con los que ocurrieron en el pasado. Objetivos: Evaluar el impacto de los rasgos tafonómicos y su papel en la formación de los conchales en ambientes de lagunas costeras. Métodos: El material estudiado fue recolectado en una acumulación de restos de conchas llamado "El Conchal" en la Laguna de Mandinga, Veracruz, un complejo lagunar ubicado en el Golfo de México. El análisis tafonómico incluye las características tafonómicas de fragmentación, bioerosión e incrustación en conchas de gasterópodos y bivalvos recientes. Las categorías de cada atributo se clasificaron en tres grados: pobre, medio y alto. El análisis fue realizado solo en conchas completas. Resultados: Se procesaron 1 697.9 g de sedimentos, recuperando 1 165 ejemplares completos, de los cuales se identificaron 5 géneros de bivalvos y 4 géneros de gasterópodos. La fragmentación y bioerosión se clasificaron como un "grado regular", esto puede ser el resultado de la energía del agua en el ambiente, que permite el constante retrabajo y la exhumación de los restos en la interfase agua-sedimento en la laguna; en tanto que, se identificaron tres erosionadores a nivel de género, estos corresponden a los icnogéneros: Entobia, Oichnus y Caulostrepsis, siendo Caulostrepsis el menos abundante. La incrustación mostró un "grado pobre"; el resultado puede interpretarse basado en las condiciones intrínsecas del ecosistema que no permiten que muchos incrustantes se desarrollen de la manera adecuada. Los incrustantes están representados por organismos calcáreos incluyendo briozoarios, tubos de serpúlidos y balanos. Se analizaron los atributos tafonómicos para generar un modelo actuotafonómico que pueda ser aplicable a ecosistemas análogos en el registro fósil. Conclusiones: En ambientes marino marginales como son las áreas lagunares la incrustación no tiene un papel importante en la preservación o destrucción de los conchales, siendo tafonómicamente más importante la fragmentación y bioerosión como agentes potencialmente destructivos que pueden ser un recurso de pérdida de la fidelidad en el registro fósil.

ABSTRACT

RESUMO A necessidade crescente de alternativas para o tratamento e a disposição de lixiviados de aterros sanitários é uma realidade no Brasil, principalmente com os avanços estabelecidos pela Política Nacional de Resíduos Sólidos a partir de 2010 e consequentes metas de substituição de lixões por aterros sanitários. Uma alternativa empregada, devido à facilidade de implantação, é o cotratamento com esgoto sanitário, por meio do recebimento do lixiviado em estações de tratamento de esgoto (ETE). Este estudo avaliou a aplicabilidade do Activated Sludge Model No. 1 (ASM1) para lagoas aeradas promovendo o cotratamento de esgoto e lixiviado. Os cenários simulados consistiram em proporções crescentes de adição de lixiviado ao sistema - que variaram de 0 a 10% - e, para cada um deles, foi avaliado o desenvolvimento de biomassa heterotrófica e autotrófica, o consumo de demanda química de oxigênio (DQO) em diferentes frações, a nitrificação, o consumo de oxigênio e a alcalinidade. Os resultados das simulações geradas indicaram que o modelo foi otimista em relação ao período de partida do sistema e à adaptação das comunidades microbianas consideradas frente aos cenários progressivamente agressivos oferecidos pela maior presença de lixiviado. Porém, representou adequadamente o prejuízo à qualidade do efluente devido à matéria orgânica recalcitrante e aos problemas relacionados à manutenção da nitrificação, frente ao aumento da capacidade de aeração e da demanda de alcalinidade. O ASM1 teve boa aplicabilidade, portanto, como ferramenta para avaliar qualitativamente o comportamento de ETE ao receber lixiviado para cotratamento e corroborar os riscos associados a essa alternativa, necessitando, porém, de modificações e detalhamentos adicionais para otimização de sistemas reais.


ABSTRACT The growing necessity for alternative landfill leachate treatment and disposal is a reality in Brazil, mainly when the advancements of the National Policy on Solid Wastes (2010) established goals for replacing dumping grounds with landfills. Due to its simplicity, a usual alternative is to perform co-treatment of municipal sewage and landfill leachate in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This study assessed the applicability of the Activated Sludge Model No 1 (ASM1) to aerated lagoons promoting sewage and leachate co-treating. The simulated scenarios consisted of increasing proportions of leachate addition to the system, ranging from 0 to 10%, and for each of them the development of heterotrophic and autotrophic biomass, COD consumption in different fractions, nitrification, oxygen consumption and alkalinity were evaluated. The simulation results showed that the model was optimistic regarding the treatment system startup and microbial communities adaptation when exposed to increasingly aggressive conditions due to leachate addition. However, it correctly represented the detrimental effects on effluent quality due to recalcitrant organic matter and the issues with maintaining proper nitrification regarding aeration capacity and alkalinity demands. ASM1 has good applicability, therefore, as a tool to qualitatively assess the behavior of WWTP when receiving leachate for co-treatment and corroborates the risks associated with this alternative, however, requiring further modifications and details to optimize real systems.

ABSTRACT

RESUMO Os ecossistemas lacustres, especificamente aqueles considerados urbanos, têm sofrido alterações em suas características físicas, ecológicas e ambientais. Observam-se a intensificação da pressão antrópica e a ausência de planejamento na implantação de serviços públicos, especificamente no que se refere à distribuição de água e ao saneamento. Percebe-se que as lagoas urbanas têm sido alvo frequente de lançamento de efluentes e ligações clandestinas. Faz-se necessário construir um modelo de gestão que permita desenvolver propostas com vistas à mitigação dos impactos ambientais decorrentes das ações antrópicas. Nesse sentido, este artigo visa apresentar um panorama sobre as condições em que se encontram as lagoas no Rio de Janeiro, enfatizando os aspectos da gestão, tendo como pano de fundo as Lagoas Rodrigo de Freitas, Araruama e Jacarepaguá. Para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa, foram realizadas atividades de campo, entrevistas com moradores da região, com responsáveis pelo poder público e com militantes da sociedade civil. Foi possível verificar que as lagoas que se encontram no cenário privilegiado para o turismo e para a captação para abastecimento humano têm atenção especial, enquanto sistemas isolados encontram-se em processo de degradação de difícil recuperação.


ABSTRACT Lake ecosystems, specifically those considered urban, have undergone changes in their physical, ecological and environmental characteristics. Intensification of anthropic pressure an absence of planning in the implementation of public services are observed, specifically with regard to water distribution and sanitation. Urban lagoons have been a frequent dumping location of sewage from illegal sewer connections. Therefore, it is necessary to build a management model that allows for the development of proposals aimed at mitigating the environmental impacts caused by anthropic actions. In light of this, this article strives to present an overview of the conditions of the lagoons in the state of Rio de Janeiro, highlighting managerial aspects and using the Rodrigo de Freitas, Araruama and Jacarepaguá lagoons as the basis for the analysis. To attain the proposed objectives, the research study conducted field studies and did interviews with people living in the region, public servants and environmental activists. The study found that lagoons that have touristic potential and can be used as source of water receive special attention, whereas isolated lagoon systems have been degraded to such a point that they are almost unrecoverable.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Tryblionella is a large epipelic genus, widespread from fresh to marine waters. Most of the studies including the genus are based only in light microscopy. Few recent studies are exclusively dedicated to Tryblionella and the ultrastructure of some species is still little known. In this paper we present eleven species of Tryblionella found in epiphyton and microphytobenthos in Patos Lagoon salt marshes. All the species are described, illustrated in light and scanning electron microscopy and comments about their taxonomy, distribution and ecology are provided. Two taxa are reported for the first time in the State of Rio Grande do Sul and one in Southern Brazil. The number of species registered in this study comprises nearly a half of the number of species registered in the country. The high richness observed may be related to the dynamics of the salt marshes, which provides both the mixing of fresh and marine waters communities and the diversity of microhabitats. The great variability among the species analyzed allowed to extend the general concept of Tryblionella, adding features which were not considered in the previous characterizations of the genus.


Resumo: Tryblionella é um gênero de diatomáceas epipélicas, distribuído de águas doces a marinhas. A maioria dos estudos que incluem o gênero baseia-se apenas em microscopia óptica. Poucos estudos recentes são exclusivamente dedicados à Tryblionella e a ultraestrutura de algumas espécies ainda é pouco conhecida. No presente artigo, apresentamos onze espécies de Tryblionella encontradas no epifíton e no microfitobentos nas marismas da Lagoa dos Patos. Todas as espécies foram descritas, ilustradas em microscopia óptica e eletrônica de varredura e comentários sobre a taxonomia, distribuição e ecologia foram fornecidos. Dois táxons foram registrados pela primeira vez para o estado do Rio Grande do Sul e um para a região Sul do Brasil. O número de espécies registradas neste estudo compreende cerca de metade das espécies registradas para o país. A grande riqueza observada pode estar relacionada à dinâmica das marismas, que proporciona tanto a mistura de comunidades de águas doces e marinhas quanto diversidade de microhabitats. A grande variabilidade entre as espécies analisadas permitiu que o conceito geral de Tryblionella fosse ampliado, incluindo características que não haviam sido consideradas nas caracterizações anteriores do gênero.

RESUMO Esta pesquisa propôs o desenvolvimento de um sistema de biofiltros submersos (SBS), modificados com base na configuração de filtros de pedra, visando ao pós-tratamento do efluente de lagoas de estabilização, inicialmente para a remoção de algas. Foram implantados 2 conjuntos de biofiltros submersos para captar esgoto tratado de duas diferentes profundidades de uma lagoa de maturação - a 60 cm (em uma zona dessa lagoa chamada superficial - ZS) e a 180 cm (em outra zona dessa lagoa chamada intermediária - ZI). Foi utilizada, como recheio dos biofiltros submersos, pedra brita nº 3, nas seguintes alturas de leito filtrante: 50, 100, 150 e 200 cm, tendo por objetivo avaliar a influência desse fator sobre a eficiência de remoção de algas mediante análise de clorofila A e outras 16 variáveis de qualidade associadas neste estudo. Obtiveram-se eficiências para demanda química de oxigênio (DQO) no intervalo de 65 a 80% para ZS e, para ZI, os resultados dessa eficiência tiveram muita variação, sem estabilidade - de forma prática, portanto, o ponto de coleta na ZI mostrou-se não recomendado. Quando às eficiências para clorofila A, para ZS, o intervalo alcançado variou de 65 a 99% e, para ZI, esses resultados foram inferiores aos da ZS. Concluiu-se que a extração a partir da zona superficial da lagoa de maturação e uma profundidade de leito entre 150 e 200 cm foram os parâmetros operacionais que levaram a um melhor desempenho global dos biofiltros submersos modificados e, mais especificamente, quanto às seguintes variáveis: DQO, demanda bioquímica de oxigênio (DBO), clorofila A e sólidos totais.


ABSTRACT This research proposed the development of a submerged biofilters system, modified based on the configuration of rock filters, aiming at the effluent post-treatment of stabilization lagoons, initially for algae removal. Two sets of submerged biofilters were implemented to collect treated sewage from two different depths of a maturation lagoon - at 60 cm (in a zone of this lagoon called superficial-SZ) and at 180 cm (in a zone of this lagoon called intermediary-IZ). It was used, as filling of submerged biofilters, gravel No. 3, at filtering layers heights of: 50, 100, 150 and 200 cm, aiming to evaluate the influence of this factor over algae removal efficiency toward chlorophyll a, and other 16 quality variables associated in this study. For SZ, efficiencies were obtained for COD in the range of 65 to 80%, and for IZ the efficiency results had a lot of variation, without stability, in a practical way, so the collection point in ZI was not recommended. For SZ efficiencies were obtained for chlorophyll a in the range of 65 to 99%, and for IZ the efficiency results were lower than those of SZ. It was concluded that the collecting from superficial zone of the maturation lagoon, and a layer depth between 150 and 200 cm, were the operational parameters that led to a better overall performance of the modified submerged biofilters, and more particularly to: COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand), BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand), chlorophyll a, and total solids.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The knowledge of polychaetes from Oaxaca, Mexico, is represented by 41 families and 241 species, nevertheless, 148 species are considered questionable. The majority of taxonomic studies of polychaetes in Oaxaca have taken placed on estuarine zones or commercial ports, sidelining other marine ecosystems. Objective: To identify the polychaeta-fauna from three different marine ecosystems in Oaxaca, Mexico. Methods: Specimens analyzed came from the Sección de poliquetos de la Colección Científica at the Laboratorio de Sistemática de Invertebrados Marinos, Universidad del Mar. The material deposited in the collection was collected between 2007-2017; additionally, new collect were realized in 2017. For each locality, the family and species richness were estimated using the accumulation function of linear dependence model. Results: One hundred lots and 273 specimens were revised. Seventy-one taxa, belonging to 47 genera and 21 families were identified, only twenty of these taxa are confirmed species (28 %). Chacahua Lagoon had the highest richness and relative abundance with 37 taxa and 149 specimens, Agua Blanca was identified 21 taxa and 92 specimens, and from San Agustín 19 taxa and 32 specimens. Sabellariidae had the highest relative abundance (58 specimens), while Phyllodocidae presented the highest species richness (12 species). Conclusions: This study adds 75 new records of taxa of polychaetes to the coast Oaxaca, which increase the knowledge in this animal group, now represented by 304 species, belonging to 154 genera and 42 families.


Introducción: El conocimiento de poliquetos en Oaxaca, México, está representado por 41 familias y 241 especies, sin embargo, 148 especies son consideradas cuestionables. La mayoría de los estudios taxonómicos de poliquetos en Oaxaca se han enfocado en zonas estuarinas o puertos comerciales, dejando de lado otros ecosistemas marinos. Objetivo: Identificar la poliqueto-fauna de tres ecosistemas diferentes de Oaxaca. Métodos: Los especímenes analizados pertenecen a la Sección de poliquetos de la Colección Científica del Laboratorio de Sistemática de Invertebrados Marinos, Universidad del Mar. El material depositado en la colección fue colectado entre 2007-2017; adicionalmente, se realizaron nuevas colectas en 2017. Para cada localidad, la riqueza de especies y familias fue estimada utilizando la función de acumulación del modelo de dependencia lineal. Resultados: Se revisaron 100 lotes y 273 especímenes. Se identificaron 71 taxones, pertenecientes a 47 géneros y 21 familias, solo 20 de estos taxones corresponden a nombres específicos (28 %). La Laguna de Chacahua presentó la mayor riqueza y abundancia relativa con 37 taxones y 149 especímenes, en Agua Blanca se identificaron 21 taxones y 92 especímenes, y para San Agustín 19 taxones y 32 especímenes. La familia Sabellariidae tuvo la mayor abundancia relativa (58 especímenes), mientras que Phyllodocidae presentó la mayor riqueza de especies (12 especies). Conclusiones: Con este estudio se añaden 75 nuevos registros de poliquetos para la costa de Oaxaca, incrementando el conocimiento de este grupo, ahora representado por 304 especies pertenecientes a 154 géneros y 42 familias.

ABSTRACT

El noroeste de México alberga las mayores abundancias de aves playeras del país. Sin embargo, para muchos de estos humedales, información sobre comunidades de aves playeras, como abundancia, tendencias poblacionales y riqueza es limitada. Actualmente, los sitios de descanso son críticos para la conservación porque las poblaciones de aves playeras han decaído en las últimas décadas. Marismas Nacionales (MN) es un humedal tropical importante con un ecosistema dinámico donde los estudios de aves playeras están limitados a unos pocos censos aéreos y terrestres. Así el objetivo del trabajo fue describir la abundancia y distribución espacial y temporal de las aves playeras en MN (temporada 2010-2011). Se seleccionaron ocho unidades de muestreo en las que se llevaron a cabo censos mensuales (noviembre 2010 a junio 2011). Se determinaron las riquezas y abundancias por sitio-mes, además se realizó un análisis espacial y temporal de las especies dominantes. Se registraron 27 especies de aves playeras y un género, con un estimado mínimo de 136 236 individuos. Este número hace a MN uno de los humedales prioritarios para la conservación en México, pues alberga al 10 % de la abundancia general del noroeste. Las especies dominantes fueron el Playerito occidental (Calidris mauri, 33 % del total), la Avoceta americana (Recurvirostra americana, 31 %) y los Costureros (Limnodromus spp., 17 %). Espacialmente las lagunas de mayor importancia fueron: Chumbeño (37 % del total registrado), Las Garzas-Chahuin (24 %) y La Polca (24 %). Este trabajo actualiza la información sobre aves playeras que utilizan MN y podría permitir el establecimiento de un programa de monitoreo, lo cual es prioritario sobre todo porque el área es un Sitio de Importancia Internacional por parte de la Red Hemisférica de Reserva para las Aves Playeras.


Northwest Mexico is an important region for shorebirds associated with an extensive series of wetlands. However, for many of these wetlands, basic information about shorebirds communities like abundance, population trends, and richness are limited. Currently, wintering and stopover sites are critical for conservation because many populations of shorebirds have declined in the last decades. Marismas Nacionales (MN) is an important tropical wetland with a dynamic ecosystem and where shorebirds studies are limited to few wintering aerial and ground surveys. Our goals were analyzing shorebirds abundance and spatial and temporal distribution patterns in 2010-2011 season. We selected eight monitoring sites from two prospective visits to the study area. We observed shorebirds monthly between November 2010 and June 2011 to analyze richness and abundance patterns by site and month. Additionally, we describe specific spatial and temporal distribution for dominant species. A total of 27 shorebirds species and one genus, with a minimum global abundance of 136 236 individuals were found. Shorebird abundance at MN is among the most important in the region with around 10 % of total abundance in northwest Mexico; therefore, MN is a priority conservation site for this group of birds. Additionally, MN presents a suitable habitat for breeding of some shorebirds species such as Snowy and Wilson' Plover, Killdeer, Northern Jacana, Black-necked Stilt and Pacific American Oystercatcher. Dominant species were: Western Sandpiper (33.5 % of total in MN), American Avocet (31 %) and Dowitchers (17 %). These taxa are very common in others wetlands in Northwest Mexico region. Spatially, shorebirds were distributed in three sites: Chumbeño lagoon (37 % of abundance total), Las Garzas-Chihuin lagoons (24.2 %) and La Polca lagoon (24 %). The less used sites by shorebirds are located in the southern part of MN. Our results update MN information and can help to establish monitoring programs in the area.

ABSTRACT

A multi-resistant strain of Vibrio parahaemolyticus was isolated from a tropical estuary in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Genome sequencing was conducted to establish the molecular basis of antibiotic resistance in this organism. The genetic content of this strain revealed it to be a non-virulent lineage that nevertheless possesses several antibiotic resistance determinants.

Abstract We evaluated the reproductive dynamics of two fish species, Lycengraulis grossidens and Platanichthys platana, in a subtropical freshwater coastal lagoon (Peri Lagoon) in Brazil. Samples were collected from nine sites every two months from June 2008 to April 2012. Different fishing methods were used to capture larvae, juveniles, and adults. Limnological variables were obtained using multiparameter probe. More females than males were collected of both fish species and the chi-square test (χ2) was used to confirm that the sex ratio was female-biased. Large numbers of maturing and mature fishes were observed in almost every sampling month. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) of L. grossidens was the highest in August, October, and December for females and in October for males, and no significant difference was found across years. The GSI of P. platana showed no significant difference across months for either sex; however, significant differences were recorded in year three (June 2010-April 2011) and year four (June 2011-April 2012) for females and in year three (June 2010-April 2011) for males. For both species, GSI was negatively correlated with temperature and water level. L. grossidens larvae were more abundant in October 2010, showing a positive correlation with water transparency, whereas P. platana larvae were more abundant in June 2011, showing a positive correlation with water transparency and negative correlation with temperature and precipitation. Both species were represented by different stages, including larvae, which confirm that these species reproduce in Peri Lagoon. Reproduction was more pronounced in autumn and winter; however, reproductive activity was evident throughout the sampling period. In conclusion, our results show that abiotic factors strongly influence the temporal pattern of reproductive activity and larval assemblages of both L. grossidens and P. platana in Peri Lagoon, Brazil.


Resumo O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a dinâmica reprodutiva de Lycengraulis grossidens e Platanichthys platana, na lagoa do Peri, uma lagoa costeira de água doce subtropical do Brasil. As amostras foram coletadas a cada dois meses, de junho/2008 a abril/2012 em nove pontos de amostragem. Para a captura de larvas, juvenis e adultos foram utilizados diferentes apetrechos de pesca. As variáveis limnológicas foram obtidas com sonda multiparâmetro. Estatisticamente, mais fêmeas do que machos foram capturadas para as duas espécies baseado no teste de qui-quadrado (χ2). Grande número de peixes em maturação e maduros foram comuns em quase todos os meses de coleta. O índice gonadossomático (RGS) de L. grossidens variou significativamente apenas entre os meses, sendo mais elevada em agosto, outubro e dezembro para as fêmeas e em outubro para os machos; e não foram encontradas diferenças significativas entre os anos. Não foi encontrado diferença significativa para o RGS de P. platana entre os meses para cada sexo; entretanto, diferenças significativas foram obtidas para as fêmeas no ano três (junho 2010-abril 2011) e quatro (junho 2011-abril 2012) e no ano três (junho 2010-abril 2011) para os machos. Para as duas espécies, o RGS apresentou uma correlação negativa com a temperatura e o nível de água. A distribuição das larvas apresentou variação temporal. As larvas de L. grossidens foram mais abundantes em outubro/2010, apresentando correlação positiva com a transparência da água. As larvas da espécie P. platana foram mais abundantes em junho/2011, apresentando correlação positiva com a transparência da água e negativa com a temperatura e a precipitação. A presença de L. grossidens e P. platana em diferentes estádios de maturação e a ocorrência de larvas confirmou que essas espécies se reproduzem na lagoa do Peri. O período reprodutivo foi mais pronunciado no outono e no inverno, porém a atividade reprodutiva ocorreu durante todo o período de coleta. Em conclusão, nossos resultados mostraram que os fatores abióticos influenciam fortemente o padrão temporal da atividade reprodutiva e a assembleia de larvas da L. grossidens e da P. platana na lagoa do Peri, Brasil.

ResumenLa carpa común (Cyprinus carpio) es un organismo acuático de valor comercial que puede sobrevivir en ambientes contaminados; la carpa contiene enzimas proteolíticas de importancia fisiológica y potencial aplicación industrial. El objetivo de este estudio fue purificar parcialmente y determinar la actividad proteolítica a diferente pH de proteasas de carpas colonizando un ambiente contaminado. Se capturaron tres carpas en diferentes zonas de la laguna contaminada de Zumpango (México) a 1 m de profundidad máxima. El extracto crudo se obtuvo del músculo dorsal mediante extracción acuosa y se fraccionó con (NH4)2SO4 saturado a 20 %, 50 % y 80 %. Posteriormente, se seleccionaron las fracciones obtenidas con (NH4)2SO4 saturado a 50 % y 80 % por su alta actividad proteolítica, se concentraron por ultrafiltración con membranas de corte de peso molecular de 100 kDa, y se analizaron por electroforesis en geles de poliacrilamida con dodecil sulfato de sodio (SDS-PAGE). La actividad proteolítica del extracto crudo fue significativamente mayor (19.7-20.3 U / mg) a pH 2, 5, y 7 (P < 0.001). Las fracciones obtenidas con (NH4)2SO4 saturado a 20 %, 50 % y 80 % presentaron actividades proteolíticas óptimas a pH 5 (2.8 U / mg) y pH 6 (2.2 U / mg); pH 6 (4.3 U / mg) y pH 3-4 (3.6 - 3.7 U / mg); pH 3 (10.8 U / mg) y pH 10 (10.6 U / mg); respectivamente. Las subfracciones con peso molecular < 100 kDa obtenidas con (NH4)2SO4 saturado a 50 % y 80 % tuvieron máxima actividad proteolítica a pH alcalino. La subfracción < 100 kDa, obtenida con (NH4)2SO4 saturado a 80 % tuvo la mayor actividad proteolítica (37.3-43.7 U / mg) a pH 8-10, factor de purificación de 3 y 19.1 % de recuperación. Trece proteínas entre 9.8 a 104.8 kDa se identificaron en el extracto proteolítico crudo. Las proteínas de 31 - 33 y 39 - 41 kDa tuvieron la concentración más alta en las fracciones estudiadas, sugiriendo la posible predominancia de serín y aspartil proteasas, respectivamente. Nosotros sugerimos que la presencia de proteasas con máxima actividad a pH alcalino está relacionada con la adaptación de C. carpio a aguas contaminadas con pH alto. Aunque estos peces son inadecuados para el consumo humano, pueden ser empleados como materia prima para la producción de proteasas destinadas para varias industrias, incluido el tratamiento de aguas residuales.


AbstractCommon carp (Cyprinus carpio) is an aquatic organism of commercial value able to survive in polluted environments; carps contain proteolytic enzymes of physiological importance and potential industrial application. The objective of this work was partially purify and study the proteolytic activity at different pH of carp proteases living in a polluted environment. Three carps were captured in different zones of Zumpango polluted lagoon (Mexico) at 1 m of maximum deep. Protease crude extracts were obtained from dorsal muscle by aqueous extraction and fractionated by 20 %, 50 %, 80 %-saturated (NH4)2SO4. Fractions extracted with 50 % and 80 %-saturated (NH4)2SO4 were selected for their high proteolytic activity and concentrated by ultrafiltration through 100 kDa molecular weight cutoff membranes and analyzed by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The crude proteolytic extract had significantly higher activity (19.7 - 20.3 U / mg) at pH 2, 5, and 7 (P < 0.001). Fractions obtained with 20 %, 50 % and 80 % - saturated (NH4)2SO4 showed peak activity at pH 5 (2.8 U / mg) and pH 6 (2.2 U / mg); pH 6 (4.3 U / mg) and pH 3 - 4 (3.6 - 3.7 U / mg); pH 3 (10.8 U / mg) and pH 10 (10.6 U / mg); respectively. Subfractions of < 100 kDa, obtained with 50 % and 80 %-saturated (NH4)2SO4, had peak proteolytic activity at alkaline pH. A < 100 kDa fraction, obtained with 80 %-saturated (NH4)2SO4, had the highest proteolytic activity (37.3 - 43.7 U / mg) at pH 8 - 10, purification factor of 3 and 19.1 % recovery. Thirteen proteins between 9.8 to 104.8 kDa were identified in the crude extract. Peak protein concentration was observed for 31 - 33 and 39 - 41 kDa, suggesting the possibility predominance of serine- and aspartyl- proteases, respectively. We suggest this protease with maximum activity at alkaline pH is related to the adaptation of C. carpio to polluted waters with high pH. Although unsuitable for human consumption, these organisms can be a source of protease production aimed to several uses as in the industry and waste water treatment among others.

ResumenLa laguna costera de La Mancha, en el Golfo de México, tiene una boca que se cierra y abre estacionalmente, lo que ocasiona importantes fluctuaciones en los niveles de inundación y que la zona intermareal se exponga frecuentemente a una alta radiación solar, altas temperaturas y su consecuente desecación. Se llevó a cabo un experimento de campo de Noviembre-2000 a Septiembre-2001 para evaluar el efecto acumulado de la variación en el nivel de inundación sobre la colonización y supervivencia de los invertebrados intermareales sésiles sobre substratos artificiales en el bosque de manglar de borde. Un total de 72 tubos de PVC de 2 m de largo fueron recubiertos con cemento para semejar rizóforos (raíces aéreas) de Rhizophora mangle. Luego fueron encajados en el fango en cuatro estaciones de muestreo (18 por estación: 9 en sitio sombreado y 9 en sitio soleado), y fueron retirados en grupos de 6 de cada estación de muestreo (3 de cada sitio sombreado y 3 de cada sitio soleado), sin reemplazo, al término de cada época climática (nortes, seca y lluvias). Además, se monitoreó la condición abierta-cerrada de la boca estuarina y el nivel de inundación durante el período de 308 días que duró el experimento. Se registró la distribución temporal, espacial y vertical de la Riqueza específica (S) y de la abundancia de individuos vivos y muertos, y los datos fueron analizados mediante ANDEVA. Únicamente siete especies colonizaron los substratos, la mayoría de ellas se registraron todo el año y en todas las estaciones de muestreo. No se observó una sucesión estacional de las especies. Al final del experimento, se obtuvo una supervivencia del 20 % de los epibiontes. El poliqueto Ficopomatus miamiensis fue la especie más abundante pero presentó una supervivencia significativamente menor que las otras especies encontradas (0 - 14 %). Los epibiontes prefirieron establecerse en sitios sombreados que en sitios soleados sin importar la estación de muestreo ni la época climática. En conclusión, la colonización de los substratos artificiales fue exitosa pero la mayoría de los individuos murieron debido a la prolongada exposición y desecación después de que la boca estuarina fue abierta por los pescadores locales.Las maniobras de excavación de la barrera arenosa por los pescadores locales interrumpen los ciclos naturales de inundación de la laguna, lo cual puede tener consecuencias futuras sobre el desarrollo de las comunidades del manglar.


AbstractLa Mancha coastal lagoon, in the Gulf of Mexico, has an inlet that opens and closes seasonally, causing important fluctuations in flood-levels and exposing the intertidal zone to high solar radiation, high temperatures and desiccation. With the aim to examine the accumulated effect of variation in flood-levels on colonization and survival of sessile intertidal invertebrates on artificial substrates in a fringe mangrove forest, a field experiment was conducted from November-2000 to September-2001. A total of 72 PVC-stakes 2 m long were encased with cement to resemble rhizophores (prop roots) of Rhizophora mangle. They were then embedded in mud at four sampling stations (18 per station: 9 in a shaded site and 9 in a sunny site), and groups of 6 were collected from each sampling station (3 from each shaded site and 3 from each sunny site) without replacement at the end of each climatic period (Eastern winds, dry and rainy). The open-closed condition of the inlet and the flood-level were monitored during different days throughout the 308-day experiment period. Temporal, spatial and vertical distribution of Species richness (S) and abundance of living and dead individuals were registered, and the data was analyzed by ANOVA. Only seven species colonized the substrates, the majority of them were recorded throughout the year and in all sampling stations. There was no seasonal succession of species. At the end of the experiment, only 20 % of the epibionts had survived. The polychaete Ficopomatus miamiensis was the most abundant, but had significantly lower survival than the other species (0-14 %). Epibionts preferred to settle in shaded sites rather than sunny ones regardless of the sampling station and the climatic season. In conclusion, artificial substrate colonization was successful but the majority of epibionts died because of long exposure and desiccation after the inlet was opened by local fishermen. Manual digging of the sand-barrier by local fishermen, disrupts the natural flooding cycles of the lagoon, and could severely impact the future development of mangrove communities.

The GSI of P. platana showed no significant difference across months for either sex; however, significant differences were recorded in year three (June 2010-April 2011) and year four (June 2011-April 2012) for females and in year three (June 2010-April 2011) for males. For both species, GSI was negatively correlated with temperature and water level. L. grossidens larvae were more abundant in October 2010, showing a positive correlation with water transparency, whereas P. platana larvae were more abundant in June 2011, showing a positive correlation with water transparency and negative correlation with temperature and precipitation. Both species were represented by different stages, including larvae, which confirm that these species reproduce in Peri Lagoon. Reproduction was more pronounced in autumn and winter; however, reproductive activity was evident throughout the sampling period. In conclusion, our results show that abiotic factors strongly influence the temporal pattern of reproductive activity and larval assemblages of both L. grossidens and P. platana in Peri Lagoon, Brazil.


Resumo O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a dinâmica reprodutiva de Lycengraulis grossidens e Platanichthys platana, na lagoa do Peri, uma lagoa costeira de água doce subtropical do Brasil. As amostras foram coletadas a cada dois meses, de junho/2008 a abril/2012 em nove pontos de amostragem. Para a captura de larvas, juvenis e adultos foram utilizados diferentes apetrechos de pesca. As variáveis limnológicas foram obtidas com sonda multiparâmetro. Estatisticamente, mais fêmeas do que machos foram capturadas para as duas espécies baseado no teste de qui-quadrado (2). Grande número de peixes em maturação e maduros foram comuns em quase todos os meses de coleta. O índice gonadossomático (RGS) de L. grossidens variou significativamente apenas entre os meses, sendo mais elevada em agosto, outubro e dezembro para as fêmeas e em outubro para os machos; e não foram encontradas diferenças significativas entre os anos. Não foi encontrado diferença significativa para o RGS de P. platana entre os meses para cada sexo; entretanto, diferenças significativas foram obtidas para as fêmeas no ano três (junho 2010-abril 2011) e quatro (junho 2011-abril 2012) e no ano três (junho 2010-abril 2011) para os machos. Para as duas espécies, o RGS apresentou uma correlação negativa com a temperatura e o nível de água. A distribuição das larvas apresentou variação temporal. As larvas de L. grossidens foram mais abundantes em outubro/2010, apresentando correlação positiva com a transparência da água. As larvas da espécie P. platana foram mais abundantes em junho/2011, apresentando correlação positiva com a transparência da água e negativa com a temperatura e a precipitação. A presença de L. grossidens e P. platana em diferentes estádios de maturação e a ocorrência de larvas confirmou que essas espécies se reproduzem na lagoa do Peri. O período reprodutivo foi mais pronunciado no outono e no inverno, porém a atividade reprodutiva ocorreu durante todo o período de coleta. Em conclusão, nossos resultados mostraram que os fatores abióticos influenciam fortemente o padrão temporal da atividade reprodutiva e a assembleia de larvas da L. grossidens e da P. platana na lagoa do Peri, Brasil.

ABSTRACT We evaluated the incidental catch of the blue crab in artisanal fisheries through the analysis of sex ratio, catch per unit effort, net positioning, and size in which the capture probability was 50% (P50). The specimens were collected from 2011 to 2013 in the estuary of Patos Lagoon, southern Brazil. The analysis showed a higher occurrence of males. Variations in the catch per unit effort showed greatest abundance values close to the mouth of the estuary. Catch per unit effort was similar when comparing fishing seasons and net positions. P50 indicated a low selectivity of the nets since it varied between studied areas but stayed below the size at first maturity. Catches indicated a greater effort on males, since females migrated to spawn in the ocean area adjacent to the estuary during the fishing period studied. The spatial variation of the catch per unit effort showed heterogeneity in fishing catches. Thus, optimal management of the resource should consider the particularities of each area.

Abstract:Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and methanogenic archaea (MA) share common niches in coastal sediments during the terminal phases of the anaerobic mineralization of organic matter. The purpose of this study was to analyze the spatial - temporal variation of SRB and MA in the sediments of a tropical coastal lagoon with ephemeral inlet (La Mancha, Veracruz, Gulf of Mexico) and its relationship with environmental changes. A total of 24 sediment samples were collected during the dry (April, May), rainy (July, September) and Northern (November, February) seasons in the period 2013-2014. Microbiological analyses included the quantification of the viable SRB and MA with different substrates, as well as mineralization experiments to determine the effect of sulfate on acetate oxidation. The analyzed environmental variables in the sediments included: temperature, pH, Eh, salinity, sulfates, H2S, volatile solids, carbohydrates, and granulometric characteristics. Major changes occurred between the dry and rainy seasons. During the dry season, sulfate-reducing abundance was significantly greater with lactate (8.3x105 - 1.2x107 cells / g) and propionate (1.8x105 - 6.6x106 cells / g) as substrates, while the MA that use methanol were dominant (4.2x105 - 9.1x106 cells / g). In contrast, during the rainy season, hydrogenophylic (2.6x105 - 8.3x106 cells/g) and acetoclastic (5.4x105-6.4x106 cells / g) MA increased significantly and SRB decreased in the analyzed substrates. An apparent competition for acetate was observed, with a greater oxidation in the media with sulfates in the dry season (0.06 mM acetate / g sediment / day), and a greater oxidation in the media without sulfates in the rainy season (0.02 mM acetate / g sediment / day). SRB and MA were present throughout the sediment column, however SRB dominated in the first centimeters of the sediment while MA were abundant in deeper layers. In conclusion, SRB and MA together played a role in the mineralization of organic matter in the sediments of La Mancha lagoon, with sulfate-reduction dominating in the dry season (closed inlet) and methanogenesis during the rainy season (open inlet). Changes in rainfall and river input in this lagoon significantly affect salinity and sulfate content, the main factors that regulate the dynamics of SRB and MA in the sediments. Rev. Biol. Resumen:Las bacterias sulfatorreductoras (BSR) y las arqueas metanogénicas (AM) comparten nichos comunes en los sedimentos costeros durante las fases terminales de la mineralización anaerobia de la materia orgánica. El objetivo del presente estudio fue analizar la variación espacio-temporal de las BSR y AM en los sedimentos de una laguna costera tropical con una boca efímera (La Mancha, Veracruz, Golfo de México) y su relación con los cambios ambientales. Un total de 24 muestras de sedimentos fueron recolectadas en las temporadas de secas (abril, mayo), lluvias (julio, septiembre) y nortes (noviembre, febrero) en el periodo 2013 - 2014. Los análisis microbiológicos incluyeron la cuantificación de las BSR y AM viables con diferentes sustratos, así como experimentos de mineralización para determinar el efecto de los sulfatos en la oxidación del acetato. Las variables ambientales analizadas en los sedimentos incluyeron la temperatura, pH, Eh, salinidad, sulfatos, H2S, sólidos volátiles, carbohidratos y las características granulométricas. Los principales cambios se presentaron entre las estaciones de secas y lluvias. En la temporada de secas la abundancia sulfatorreductora fue significativamente superior con lactato (8.3x105 - 1.2x107 células / g) y propionato (1.8x105 - 6.6x106 células / g) como sustratos, mientras que las AM que emplean metanol dominaron (4.2x105 - 9.1x106 células / g). Por el contrario, en la época de lluvias aumentaron significativamente las AM hidrogenofílicas (2.6x105-8.3x106 células / g) y acetoclásticas (5.4x105-6.4x106 células / g), disminuyendo las BSR con los sustratos analizados. Se determinó una competencia aparente por el acetato. Su oxidación fue mayor en los medios con presencia de sulfatos en las temporadas de secas (0.06 mM acetato / g sedimento / día), mientras que aumentó en los medios sin sulfatos en la época de lluvias (0.02 mM acetato / g sedimento / día). Las BSR y las AM estuvieron presentes a lo largo de la columna sedimentaria; sin embargo, las BSR dominaron en los primeros centímetros del sedimento y las AM abundaron a mayor profundidad. En conclusión las BSR y AM participaron de manera conjunta en la mineralización de la materia orgánica en los sedimentos de la laguna de La Mancha, dominando la sulfatorreducción en la temporada de secas (boca cerrada) y la metanogénesis en la época de lluvias (boca abierta). Los cambios en el aporte fluvial y la precipitación en esta laguna afectaron significativamente la salinidad y el contenido de sulfatos, siendo los principales factores que regularon la dinámica de las BSR y AM en los sedimentos.

Resumen:Pomacea flagellata es una especie de caracol de agua dulce nativo en el sureste de México. Sobre esta especie existen pocos estudios y en ninguno se han abordado aspectos de su reproducción. Este caracol ha sido explotado durante años en la laguna Bacalar y sus poblaciones han decrecido considerablemente, conllevando a la veda de su captura. Este trabajo se realizó con el objetivo de evaluar las variaciones temporales de la frecuencia de cópulas y la abundancia de masas de huevos de P. flagellata en la laguna de Bacalar, así como sus relaciones con la abundancia de los caracoles y con variables ambientales. Los muestreos fueron realizados durante tres temporadas: Lluvias (julio, agosto y septiembre 2012), Nortes (diciembre 2012, enero y febrero 2013) y Secas (marzo, abril y mayo 2013) en 12 estaciones a lo largo de la laguna de Bacalar. En cada estación, se recorrió un transecto de 100 m paralelo a la orilla y se contó el número de huevas frescas (color rosado) puestas sobre la vegetación, troncos, rocas o estructuras artificiales. En el agua se hicieron tres transectos de 50 x 2 m y en cada uno se contaron los caracoles y se registró el número de cópulas. La densidad de caracoles mostró variaciones significativas entre temporadas, disminuyendo desde la temporada de Lluvias hasta la temporada de Secas. Entre los meses dentro de temporadas no se presentaron diferencias significativas (ANOVA, p>0.05). Durante toda la temporada de Lluvias se registraron cópulas con una frecuencia significativamente mayor que en Nortes, mientras en Secas no se registraron cópulas (Kruskal-Wallis, p˂0.05). La puesta de masas de huevos se extendió de julio a marzo. La densidad de huevas no presentó diferencias entre la temporadas de Lluvias y Nortes (2.72 masas/m y 2.93 masas/m, respectivamente), pero en Secas fue significativamente menor con un valor de 0.1 masas/m (H, p˂0.05). La frecuencia de cópulas se relacionó significativamente con la abundancia de caracoles (rs= 0.26; p<0.05) y con la temperatura del agua (rs= 0.34; p<0.05). La abundancia de masas de huevos se relaciona significativamente con la abundancia de individuos (rs= 0.46; p<0.05). De forma general se observó que la actividad reproductiva de P. flagellata en la laguna de Bacalar, está asociada a los meses más cálidos y con mayor precipitación. Este hallazgo es relevante para apoyar la gestión de este recurso en la región, de tal forma que para implementar alguna medida de manejo para esta especie, es necesario tener en cuenta que al menos se debe mantener una veda temporal durante la etapa reproductiva.


Abstract:The freshwater snail Pomacea flagellata is native from Southeastern Mexico. Studies about this species are scarce and none has treated their reproduction. This snail has been exploited at Bacalar lagoon for many years, leading to a significant decrease in their abundance and currently, a permanent ban was proposed by the government. This work aimed to assess the temporal variations of mating frequency and the abundance of egg clutches of P. flagellata at Bacalar lagoon, as well as their relation with snails density and environmental variables. Sampling was done during the three climatic seasons: Rainy (July, August and September/2012), North or Cold fronts (December/2012 and January and February/2013) and Dry (March, April and May/2013) in 12 sampling stations located along the Bacalar lagoon. On each station a transect of 100 m length was set parallel to the edge, and the number of fresh egg clutches (pink color) laid over vegetation, rocks or manmade structures, were counted. In the water, three 50 x 2 m transects were set and the number of snails were counted as well as the mating frequency. Density of snails varied significantly among seasons, decreasing from the rainy to the dry season. There were no significant differences of snail abundance among months, nested in climatic seasons (ANOVA, p>0.05). During the rainy season the mating frequency was significantly higher than in the Norths, meanwhile in the dry season no mating were registered (Kruskal-Wallis, p˂0.05). Eggs clutches appeared from July to March. Density of egg clutches presented no differences between the Rainy and the North seasons (2.72 and 2.93 clutches/m, respectively), nonetheless during the dry season abundance of egg masses was significantly lower (0.1 clutches/m) (H, p˂0.05). Mating frequency was related with snail abundance (rs= 0.26; p<0.05) and water temperature (rs= 0.34; p<0.05) and the abundance of egg masses is related with snail abundance (rs= 0.46; p<0.05). In general, we observed that reproductive activity of P. flagellata at Bacalar lagoon is related with the warmer months and with higher rainfall. This finding is relevant to support the management of this resource in the region, so that to implement any management arrangement they must be aware that a temporal ban is necessary during the reproductive season at least.
