ABSTRACT

Context: Tuberculosis (TB) treatment support is one of the recommended strategies to enhance treatment adherence and outcomes. Treatment supporters are at risk of contracting TB and adequate knowledge of TB and good preventive practices are required for their protection. Aims: This study aimed at assessing the knowledge and preventive practices of TB treatment supporters at Directly Observed Treatment Short-course (DOTS) centers in Lagos Mainland Local Government Area of Lagos state, Nigeria. Settings and design: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 196 TB treatment supporters selected from five DOTS centers in Lagos. Methods: Data were obtained using an adapted pretested questionnaire. Statistical analysis used: Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed to determine the factors associated with self-protection practices. A P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The mean age of the participants was 37.3 ± 12.1 years. More than half of the respondents were females (59.2%) and immediate family members (61.3%). Overall, 22.5% had good knowledge of TB, while 53.0% had positive attitudes toward TB. Only 26.0% adequately protected themselves from infection. The caregiver's level of education (P = 0.001) and their relationship to the patient (P = 0.001) were significantly associated with good preventive practices in bivariate analysis. Not being related to the patient was a predictor of adequate TB prevention practices (adjusted odds ratio = 2.852; P = 0.006; 95% confidence interval = 1.360-5.984). Conclusions: This study revealed low levels of TB knowledge and fair preventive practices, especially among caregivers who are relatives. There is, therefore, a need to improve population literacy about TB and its prevention and a more focused orientation of relatives who volunteer as treatment supporters, through health education, with periodic monitoring during clinic visits, of how they prevent TB.

ABSTRACT

Background: Lagos State has the highest burden of COVID-19 in Nigeria. We assessed associated factors with death from COVID-19 among hospitalized patients in Lagos, Nigeria. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using de-identified records of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients admitted into 15 isolation centers in Lagos State between February 27, 2020, and September 30, 2020. Results: A total of 2,858 COVID -19 patients were included in this study. The mean age of the patients was 41.9±15.5 years. A higher proportion of patients were males (65.8%), asymptomatic (55.5%), had no comorbid condition (72.2%) and had the mild disease (73.8%). The case fatality rate was 6.5%. The odds of death from COVID-19 infection increased by 4% with every increase in age (AOR 1.04, 95%CI 1.031.05, p<0.001). The chance of dying was 50%-fold more among males (AOR 1.5, 95%CI 1.0 2.2, p = 0.042), 60%-fold more among patients with comorbidity (AOR 1.6, 95%CI 1.3 2.4, p = 0.037) and 9-fold more among patients with severe COVID-19 infection (AOR 9.6, 95% CI 4.9 19.1, p <0.001). Conclusion: The odds of dying was higher among males, the elderly, patients with comorbidity and severe COVID-19

ABSTRACT

The 6-lettered word "Stroke" is an ancient disease, likened Biblicallyto "666" in Revelation 13 verse 18. Globally, it is the commonestcause of acquired long-term disability. While its incidence has beendeclining in high-, low/middle-income countries (LMICs) have witnessed an increase. This increase is driven byepidemiologic-transition/modernizatio n-complex, healthcaredisparities, and increasing prevalence of vascular risk-factors. Despitethe disproportionate burden of stroke in LMICs, these countrieshave the lowest rate of access to acute reperfusion-interventions leadingto greater stroke-related morbidity /mortality. Effective primordial, primary, secondary, and quaternary prevention-strategies coordinated at all levels of care are needed to reduce stroke incidenceand poor outcomes. The World Stroke Organization (WSO) hasproposed achieving global primary prevention through 1) Population-wide approach to limiting stroke risk-factors exposure, 2) App-basedmotivational population-wide approach to mitigating stroke risk-fa cto rs, 3 ) u se of lo w-co st co mbi n at io n /po ly- p il l to tre at hypertension/dyslipidemia and 4) addressing behavioural risk-factorsthrough interventions by community health-workers.The need to set-up stroke-units, post-hospitalisation rehabilitation-centres, stroke-registers/registries, stroke-clubs, and encouragecommunity health-education, must be emphasised for optimal care inLMIC.13 Community Health Empowerment (CHE) withthe AcronymBE FAST / STRoke as warning signs of stroke must be emphasised(B: Balance-loss; E: Eye vision-loss; F: Facial Asymmetry; A: Armweakness; S: Speech difficulties; T: Time is brain; Or first 3-lettersof STRoke Can Patient Smile? ABSTRACT

Abstract One aquatic coleopteran species from family Dytiscidae and two aquatic coleopteran genera from family Hydrophilidae were recorded in the summer period and represent first records in the Egyptian lakes. Beetles were collected from two northern lakes, Lake Idku and Lake Burullus. They were identified by morphological characteristics as well as the mtDNA barcoding method. A molecular phylogenetic approach was used to determine the genetic identity of the collected samples based on the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI). Prodaticus servillianus (Dytiscidae) from Egypt showed no significant difference in the COI region and they are highly similar to P. servillianus from Madagascar. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that the other two coleopteran genera belong to family Hydrophilidae. Based on COI only, there is no clear evidence for their genetic identity at the species level. So, we defined them to the closest taxon and denoted them as Cymbiodyta type A and B. The results indicated that resolving the molecular identity of the aquatic beetles from northern lakes of Egypt need more considerations in the field of biological conservation. We concluded that utilization of COI as a barcoding region for identifying some coleopteran species is not sufficient and additional molecular markers are required to uncover the molecular taxonomy at deep levels.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The zooplankton communities often exhibit daily vertical migrations to avoid natural ultraviolet radiation and/or fish predation. However there is no information on this topic in Chilean North Patagonian lakes up to date. Therefore, this study deals with a first characterization of plankton crustacean daily vertical migration in two temperate, oligotrophic lakes (Villarrica and Panguipulli lakes, 39°S) in Southern Chile. Zooplankton were collected at different depths intervals (0-10m, 10-20 m, 20-30m, 30-40m) at early morning, middle day, evening and night in the studied site. The results revealed that zooplankton species (Daphnia pulex, Ceriodaphnia dubia, Neobosmina chilensis, Mesocyclops araucanus, and Tropocyclops prasinus) are abundant in surface zones at night, early morning and evening, whereas at middle day the zooplankton abundances are high at deep zones. The results agree with observations for Argentinean and North American lakes where these daily migration patterns in crustacean zooplankton species were reported due mainly natural ultraviolet radiation exposure, whereas for northern hemisphere lakes the vertical migration is due to combined effect of natural ultraviolet radiation and fish predation exposure.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Carotenoids are an important source of biological activities, such as antioxidant or antimicrobial. Also, carotenoids impact the cosmetic or food supplement industry, mainly in aquaculture. Several reports in Latin America showed novel molecules, mainly in isolated strains in Patagonia, Argentina. However, in Colombia, there are not reports about carotenoid production from pigmented wild yeasts. Objective: We assessed the carotenoid production ability in wild yeasts isolated from lakes, wastewater and rivers located in Cali, Colombia. Materials and methods: 30 yeasts were selected from two collections, each of them was characterized by the biomass, yield of total carotenoids and ß-carotene production. Promisor strains were identified with sequence analysis of ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region. The highest yield in pigment extraction was obtained by strains P11A (84,36 ± 5,24 µg/g) and Rhodotorula paludigena CS13 (56,26 ± 7,08 µg/g), while higher concentrations of ß-carotene were 10,2 µg/mL (R. paludigena CS13) and 9,7 µg/mL (R. mucilaginosa/alborubescens P10A). The kinetics of growth and pigment production for five days was optimal for the P11A strain, where we found an increasing 10-fold higher (48 h: 109,62 µg/g, 120 h: 1403,10 µg/g). Conclusions: We suggest that yeasts isolated from aquatic systems are promising for the production of carotenoid pigments (including ß-carotene), making their extraction and characterization viable for future biotechnological studies.

ABSTRACT

In tropical lakes, seasonal changes in plankton dynamics are minimal and irregular, since climatic conditions are fairly stable throughout the year, in most cases only long-term studies allow observing patterns in the dynamics of the plankton. Lake Río Cuarto is a maar-type meromic lake located in the plains of Northern Costa Rica, in the past there have been no limnological studies more than a year of sampling, in this work we present data on the composition of phytoplankton and zooplankton over four years, from 2013 to 2017, with the aim of analyzing changes in the plankton community in a longer period, associated with environmental variables. Phytoplankton was studied from subsurface samples, preserved in Lugol's solution and zooplankton from 20 m vertical hawls of a 64 µm mesh net, and preserved with formaline and later transferred to 95 % ethanol. Phytoplankton composition included 54 taxa, most of them were Chlorophyta, followed by Cyanobacteria and Bacillariophyta. The most abundant were: Synechococcus spp., Aphanocapsa sp. Coenochloris fotii, Chlorella sp. and Discostella stelligera. Total phytoplankton decreased from 2013 to 2017, mainly due to a decrease in Cyanobacteria. Zooplankton comprised 14 taxa, 5 cladocerans, 4 copepods, 1 diptera and 4 rotifers. The most abundant were: Keratella americana, Brachionus falcatus, Eubosmina tubicen and Arctodiaptomus dorsalis. There was a substitution of dominant species through time, at first (2013-2014) K. americana and E. tubicen alternated in dominance, and later (2015-2016), A. dorsalis, Diaphanosoma sp. and Ceridaphnia sp. became dominant, with a return of K. americana by 2017. The changes that occurred during the time of the study seem to be related to changes in the conditions of the lake, since its thermocline deepened with time and became more transparent. The abundance, of rotifers and Eubosmina tubicen, decreased associated to a decrease of Cyanobacteria. Those changes were not cyclical on an annual basis, but seemed to occur more on a long-term basis, as has been recognized earlier in the literature about tropical lakes.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Fish production activities in Lake Tota, Boyacá are increasing concentrations of ammonium and nitrate, nutrients that are accelerating eutrophication processes. Some of the microbial communities that regulate the entry of allochthonous nitrogen are nitrifying bacteria, and the determination of their abundance in ecosystems is a measure of pollution bioindication. The objective of the study was to quantify and biochemically characterize the cultivable nitrifying bacteria of the limnetic zone of Lake Tota. The most probable number technique (MPN) was used to measure abundance. The samples were taken in the Lago Chico and Lago Grande sectors, in limnetic areas with fish activity and without intervention. Physical and chemical variables were measured in situ and the concentration of nutrients in the laboratory was determined. The highest quantifications of nitrifying bacteria were recorded in the area of influence of fish farming. The group of ammonium oxidizing bacteria (BOA) and nitrite oxidants (BON) was smaller in the central area of Lago Grande compared to fish farms in Hato Laguna and El Túnel. 14 isolates of nitrifying bacteria were obtained, genera Nitrosomonas spp. and Nitrobacter spp. Changes in BOA abundance were related to alkalinity, while BON values correlated with electrical conductivity and dissolved inorganic nitrogen. A greater abundance of nitrifying bacteria was recorded in the lake's limnetic areas affected by fish farming activity, associated with the increase in nutrients dissolved in the water column.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The occurrence of multi-drug resistance tuberculosis among tuberculosis patients has raised global public health concern, especially in Nigeria. The increase in the number of cases of resistance tuberculosis despite the effort and need to curb the menace in Nigeria led to this study. Aim of the Study: The aim was to investigate the effect of anti-Tuberculosis drugs on patients with multi-drug resistance Tuberculosis in Mainland Hospital Yaba, Lagos. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study of the already confirmed multi-drug resistance tuberculosis patients at the Mainland Hospital Yaba, Lagos .One hundred self-structured interview questionnaires were randomly administered among already confirmed mult-drug resistance tuberculosis patients at the hospital to collect bio-data information, and thereafter, received second-line anti-Tuberculosis drugs in phases for 22 months Results and Discussion: The patients received the following regimen of treatments based on their weights and ages, the selected regimens administered for 22 months comprised of two phases; first, 8 months of intensive phase of Kanamycin, levofloxacin, cycloserine, prothionamide, and pyrazinamide and second, 12 months of Levofloxacin, cycloserine, prothionamide and pyrazinamide. Post laboratory analysis was used to monitor the effectiveness of the second-line anti-Tuberculosis drugs used. Out of the 92 patients that received the drugs, 89(96.7%) were confirmed negative to multi-drug resistance tuberculosis, while 3(3.3%) were still positive. Conclusion:The anti-Tuberculosis drugs in the order used is highly recommended for the reduction if not total eradication of multi-drug resistance tuberculosis in Nigeria. Effort should be geared towards making sure that the multi-drug resistance tuberculosis patients are confined, proper regimen administered and monitored in order to reduce the rate of spread

ABSTRACT

Background: Robust and effective information management systems are critical for successful malaria control and elimination. This study was a follow up study to assess the practices of Lagos State public healthcare facilities with regards to malaria documentations and reporting to the local government authorities (LGAs) in Lagos Nigeria in 2009 and then in 2013.Methods: We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional repeated survey of all 218 functional government-owned health facilities in Lagos State between in years 2009 and 2013 using a structured questionnaire. Approval was obtained from the research ethics committee of the Lagos State Ministry of Health. Results: There was a decrease in the proportion of primary & secondary healthcare facilities that document all cases of malaria seen in the facilities from 97.9% and 95.5% respectively in 2009 to 91.5% and 85.7% in 2013. About 53% of the primary healthcare facilities rendered malaria data to the Local Government Area (LGA) using the IDSR system in 2009 which marginally increase to 62.4% in 2013. Whereas in 2009, 63.6% of secondary healthcare facilities rendered malaria data to the LGA whilst 50% did in 2013. The only Tertiary health facility in the state did not render malaria data to the LGA in 2009 but did in 2013.Conclusions: There was a gradual reduction in malaria documentation by the government healthcare facilities. Therefore, there is need to intensify training among health workers in the government health facilities in the state with continuous monitoring and evaluation of performance to determine the impact.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Amazonian floodplain lakes host a high diversity of predatory fish which coexist and exploit the high diversity of available prey. Morphology could be the characteristic most closely associated with their preferred feeding sources (prey). However, it is unclear whether this association is direct or indirect. If it is indirect, swimming performance or preferential position in the water column could be the most evident characteristic. To examine the degree to which fish morphology of predator fish species is correlated to their dietary inputs, we compared the existence of morphological and feeding dissimilarity among eight predator species with the association between predator morphologies and preferred prey. We collected, measured, and sampled the stomach contents of fish from two lowland floodplain lakes associated with the Solimões River, Brazil, in May, August, and November of 2014. Of 187 collected fish across eight species, five species showed fish to be the most important item in their diets and three preferentially ate shrimp. Principal components analyses of ecomorphological attributes divided the species according to their ability to find the prey, swimming performance of the predator, and prey size. While there was significant distinction between the varying morphologies of predators, we were unable to distinguish between the specific diet of these species and did not find a correlation between morphology and feeding. These results are likely due to the fact that there is great abundance and diversity of available prey in the Amazonian floodplain lakes, so opportunistic feeding may be the primary foraging strategy of predator fish species living in these environments.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Testudinella is a taxon of Rotifera broadly distributed in Brazil. In a recent collection in marginal lakes connected to the Paranapanema River (São Paulo, Brazil), we found specimens of Testudinella mucronata and T. patina with concavities on their lorica. The objective of this study was to describe the concavities observed in individuals of both species and discuss their possible causes. Plankton samples were collected at two sampling stations, in the pelagic (PZ) and littoral (LZ) zones of the Panema and Coqueiral lakes; both of these lakes are ultra-oligotrophic and not polluted. For T. mucronata, 4% of individuals with concavities were found in the PZ of Coqueiral lake and 50% in the LZ of Panema lake. In T. patina, the proportion of specimens with concavities corresponded to 34% in the LZ of Panema lake and 17% in PZ of Coqueiral lake. In this study, we discussed that low water temperatures, predation events and/or recent hatching are factors that may justify the concavities in the lorica of specimens of our work.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Central Argentina has numerous saline lakes sustained by groundwater sources and rainfall. These lakes are temporary and experience significant changes in water level and salinity, depending on wet and dry climate cycles. This study aims to investigate the scarcely known dynamics of environmental and zooplankton parameters during the drying phase of one of these lakes. Monthly samples were taken from December 2 012 to July 2 013 in the Ojo de Agua Uriburu lake, previous to its drying. At the beginning of the study, the lake's depth was 0.7 m and its salinity was 16.65 g L-1, later, in July, its depth decreased to 0.06 m and its salinity increased to 92.9 g L-1. Zooplankton species richness was low (three crustaceans and three rotifers), with Boeckella poopoensis and Moina eugeniae dominating in the system. Maximum density and biomass were attained by the two dominant species in April (318.5 ind L-1 and 3 029.1 µg L-1 dry weight; and 242.4 ind L-1 and 1 530.4 µg L-1 dry weight, for B. poopoensis and M. eugeniae, respectively), and no correlation was found between these parameters and salinity. Maximum average body lengths for both species were observed in the last months of sampling (M. eugeniae: 1 020 ± 84.2 µm and B. poopoensis: 1 348.8 ± 89.0 µm). At this point of the study, neither juvenile nor larval stages were found. The increase in average body size is, arguably, the result of increased salinity in the system through a negative effect on reproduction. Because this lake reached hypersalinity, its ecological dynamics are unique among those of other temporary, saline lakes that dried in central Argentina. Similar studies on other temporary ecosystems are needed to increase the information on these little known ecological aspects.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The anostracan Artemia is one of the few organisms that can inhabit hypersaline lakes. In Argentina, this genus is represented by two species: the invasive A. franciscana Kellogg, 1906 and the autochthonous A. persimilis Piccinelli & Prosdocimi, 1968, the latter being the only one recorded in the province of La Pampa. Some of the biological aspects of A. persimilis are known based on laboratory studies, and data on its ecology in natural conditions are scarce. The aim of this work is to present information on the density, biomass, and population structure of A. persimilis in relation to environmental variables in Utracán, a hypersaline lake of the semiarid Central Pampa of Argentina. Water and zooplankton samples were taken monthly from May 2009 until August 2010. The mean density and biomass were 56.98 ind.L-1 (± 106.64) and 1.23 mg.L-1 (± 1.35), respectively. The species was negatively affected by salinity, and it was absent between November and February, when salinity exceeded 320 g.L-1. However, when it was present, even during the months of higher salinity, a high proportion of naupliar stages was found, which could indicate that, in nature, A. persimilis can reproduce with high salinity. Although it has been indicated that A. persimilis could be displaced by A. franciscana, the highest tolerance of the former at low temperatures, which allowed the population to continue reproducing at values close to 3°C, would limit its displacement. However, an increase in the temperature of lakes as a result of global warming could modify this situation and allow the advance of the introduced species to the south.

ABSTRACT

Abstract:The detailed response of tropical lake phytoplankton to weather variations has been little studied, but it seems that composition varies in response to rain and wind variability over the course of the year. In order to gather more evidence on this variation, the weekly variability of phytoplankton composition was studied in Lake Bonilla, a low land (380 masl) 30 m deep tropical lake, from April 2010 to May 2011. Temperature variation at several depths was recorded automatically, and measurements of dissolved oxygen, water transparency, and nutrients were performed several times during the study period. The lake showed a warm monomictic pattern, with deep mixing occurring during the hemispherical winter, especially after a heavy rain period in December 2010. Phytoplankton was dominated by a few species: a colonial Cyanobacteria (Aphanocapsa sp., functional group F) and two colonial Chlorococcaceae (Botryococcus braunii and Eutetramorus tetrasporus, both in the functional group K). Their relative dominance shifted throughout the year, following changes in water column conditions in response to weather variations. Although changes in main functional groups indicate a shift in resource availability rather than energy, it was clear that attention should also be given to particular species adaptations beyond those used for establishing functional groups. Rev. Biol. Trop. 64 (4): 1771-1781. Epub 2016 December 01.

ABSTRACT

Alkaline proteases are hydrolytic enzymes that cleave peptide bonds in proteins and peptides in alkaline conditions, which occupy a pivotal importance with respect to their industrial applications. This study aimed to isolate new alkaline protease producing alkaliphilic bacteria from Egyptian soda lakes and optimize the fermentation process to enhance the enzyme production. The extensive screening process of the samples collected from Egyptian soda lakes resulted in isolation of a potent alkaline protease producing alkaliphilic strain AK-R. The isolate was identified as Bacillus agaradhaerens strain AK-R based on 16S rRNA gene analysis (99%). Wheat bran and gelatin supported maximum alkaline protease production as carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. Strain AK-R is halo-tolerant thermotolerant alkaliphilic bacterium in nature, as it can grow over a wide range of NaCl concentrations (up to 25%) and up to 55 °C, with maximal growth and enzyme production at 2.5-5%, and pH 11 at 35 °C. Among the tested cations, only Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions significantly enhanced the enzyme production by about 1.2, and 1.3 fold compared to control, respectively. Alkaline protease secretion was coherent with the growth pattern, reaching maximal yield after about 32 h (mid stationary phase). In conclusion a new halo-tolerant thermo-tolerant alkaliphilic alkaline protease producing Bacillus agaradhaerens strain AK-R was isolated from Egyptian soda lakes. Optimization of the nutritional and cultivation conditions resulted in increase of enzyme yield by 20 fold. Strain AK-R and its extracellular alkaline protease with salt, pH and temperature, tolerance signify their potential application in laundry and pharmaceuticals industries.
