ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the mediating role of mental resilience between childhood abuse and mental health of college students with left-behind experience, so as to provide reference for the improvement of their mental health level of. Methods 350 college students with left-behind experience and 297 college students who did not have such experience were recruited in some science and technology college in Anhui province and assessed with Childhood Abuse Questionnaire (CTQ-SF), the Chinese Mental Resilience Scale (CMRS) and Symptom Check List 90(SCL-90). Correlation analysis and mediation effect analysis were conducted with the collected data. Results The level of childhood abuse of college students with left-behind experience was higher than that of college students without left-behind experience (Z=-2.696,P=0.007), and the level of psychological resilience was lower than that of college students without left-behind experience (Z=-3.267,P=0.001).The scores of the Chinese Mental Resilience Scale, Childhood Abuse Questionnaire and Symptom Check List were negatively correlated(r=-0.279, P<0.001, r=-0.247, P<0.001). The scores of Childhood Abuse Questionnaire and Symptom Check List 90 were positively correlated(r= 0.280, P<0.001 ). The direct effect of childhood abuse on mental health problems was 0.247 and the mediation effect of resilience in total effect was 19.02%. Conclusions Resilience is a partial mediator between the relation of childhood abuse and mental health. Therefore, intervention activities can be carried out for the college students who have experienced left-behind childhood abuse to improve their overall mental health level.

ABSTRACT

Objective To understand the obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) and relative influencing factors among college students with left-behind experience. Methods College students with left-behind experience were selected from three universities in Anhui Province. The Chinese Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) and self-edited basic situation questionnaires were used to measure the OCS, self-esteem, depression and left-behind experience. Multivariate logistic regressions model was applied to examine the influential factors of OCS. Results A total of 2 291 college students with left-behind experience were investigated. The detection rate for OCS in college students with left-behind experience were 26.5%. Regarding the OCS in college students with left-behind experience, significant differences were found in the following aspects: frequency of meeting with parents, parenting style, conflicts with caregivers, smoking and drinking (all P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that caregiver adopts strict parenting style (OR=1.300, 95%CI:1.025-1.649,P=0.030), indulgent parenting style (OR=1.372, 95%CI:1.017-1.852, P=0.038), smoking (OR=1.982, 95%CI:1.305-3.011, P=0.001), depressive symptoms (OR=2.423, 95%CI:1.954-3.005, P<0.001), medium self-esteem (OR=0.604, 95%CI:0.481-0.759, P<0.001) and high self-esteem (OR=0.488, 95%CI:0.362-0.659, P<0.001) were influencing factors of OCS. Conclusions The prevalence rate of OCS among college students with left-behind experience is high. Some interventions should be taken to reduce the OCS among college students with left-behind experience.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore mediating effect of coping style on the relationship between self-esteem and negative emotions among college students with left-behind experience. Methods The investiga-tion was carried out among 663 college students with left-behind experience by multistage sampling method, using coping style scale, self-esteem scale, self-rating anxiety scale and Beck depression inventory. Re-sults Scores of all scales were shown as follows: self-esteem (3. 09±0. 51),anxiety (34. 94±7. 90),de-pression (8. 80±8. 72),solving problem coping (9. 03±2. 57),help-seeking coping (5. 70±2. 24),self-bla-ming coping (3. 54±2. 24),fantasy coping (4. 56±2. 35),avoidance coping (4. 74±2. 02),rationalizing coping (4. 67±2. 32). Anxiety and depression had significantly negative correlations with self-esteem(r=-0. 46,-0. 50,P<0. 01) ,solving problem coping( r=-0. 29,-0. 30,P<0. 01) and help-seeking coping( r=-0. 08,-0. 18,P<0. 01) ,and significantly positive correlations with rationalizing coping( r=0. 32,0. 28,P<0. 01),self-blaming coping(r=0. 45,0. 43,P<0. 01),fantasy coping(r=0. 33,0. 23,P<0. 01) and avoid-ance coping(r=0. 26,0. 23,P<0. 01). There were partially significant mediating effects of solving problem coping(-0. 09,95%CI:-0. 06--0. 13),rationalizing coping(-0. 03,95%CI:-0. 01--0. 05),self-blaming coping(-0. 11,95%CI:-0. 06--0. 15) ,fantasy coping(-0. 02,95%CI:-0. 01--0. 04) ,and non-significant effects of help-seeking coping and avoidance coping in the relationship between self-esteem and negative e-motions. Conclusion Solving problem coping,rationalizing coping,self-blaming coping and fantasy coping play a partial mediating role in the relationship between self-esteem and negative emotions,while the media-ting effect of help-seeking coping and avoidance coping are not significant.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the mediating effect of self-esteem and resilience, and the moderating role of left-behind experience on negative life events and depression in college students. Methods:Totally 879 college students were selected from 3 universities in Sichuan and Chongqing (396 college students with left-behind experience,483 college students without left-behind experience). The Adolescent Self-Rating Life Events Check List (ASLEC),Self-esteem Scale (SES),Resilience Scale of Chinese Adolescent (RSCA) and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) were used to measure the negative life events,self-esteem,resilience and depression. The Bootstrap program and multiple-group analysis were used to test mediation effect and moderation effect. Results:Scores of ASLEC were higher in those with left-behind experience than in those without left-behind experience [(9.0 ± 3.8)vs.(6.8 ± 3.1),P < 0.001].College students'left-behind experience was positively correlated with scores of ASLEC and SDS (r =0.22-0.22,Ps <0.01),while negatively correlated with scores of RSCA and SES (r =-0.29--0.56,Ps <0.01).The complete mediating effect of the scores of SES and RSCA between ASLEC score and SDS score was significant (mediating effect = 0.08,0.13,0.07;Ps < 0.01).It was significant that the mediaring roles of self-esteem and resilience (95% CI:0.13-0.68).Left-behind experience played the moderating effect on self-esteem and resilience (the constraint model fitting degree of variation was △x2 = 2120.68,△df= 8,P < 0.001).Conclusions:Self-esteem and resilience completely mediates college students'negative events and depression, which is moderated by their previous left-behind experience.
