ABSTRACT

The dorsal surface of the tongues of the Slow Loris and the Pygma Slow Loris were examined by employing scanning electron microscopy techniques. Three types of the papillae are present on their dorsal surface of the tongue: filiform, fungiform and vallate. The filiform papillae are located the apex and the body of the tongue, and we observed that each of them has a gustatory pore. The fungiform papillae, scattered singly among the filiform papillae, distribute mainly on the apex of the tongue. The vallate papillae are located along the diversing arms of the V-shaped boundary between the anterior and posterior regions of the tongue. In addition, no foliate papillae were observed. The morphological characteristics of the dorsal surface of the tongues in Slow Loris and Pygma Slow Loris are similar to each other.

ABSTRACT

The dorsal surface structure of the lingual papillae in the least weasel was compared with that of other carnivorous mammalian species. Two types of mechanical papillae (filiform and conical) and two types of gustatory papillae (fungiform and vallate) were observed. The filiform papillae had secondary processes. Rarely conical papillae were observed. A few taste buds were seen on the surfaces of the fungiform papillae. The four vallate papillae were located on both sides of the posterior end of the lingual body. In conclusion, morphological characteristics of the lingual papillae and their distribution in the least weasel were similar to those of the Japanese marten and ferret. The conical papillae in the lingual apex of the Japanese marten and ferret were not observed, but the conical papillae were seen in the lingual apex of the least weasel.

ABSTRACT

The G. microtarsus is a small marsupial belonging to the Didelphidae family and may be found mainly in the Atlantic Rainforest of the Brazilian Southeastern region. G. microtarsus has important ecological importance in the dispersion of seeds of several plant species. Current research characterizes morphologically six tongues of adult male and female specimens, which are fixed in 10% formaldehyde. The tongues were analyzed, measured and photographed "in situ" and "ex situ". Anatomy, light microscopy and ultrastructural analysis were performed. Macroscopically the tongue has root, a fixed body and a free apex. The tongue has fungiform papillae and high conical and acute filiform papillae across the dorsal surface. It also featured three vallate papillae located at the root and marginal fungiform papillae at the apex. Microscopically, the tongue is composed of longitudinal and transversal muscle fibers. Blood vessels, nerves, serous, mucous and mixed acini are found in non-modeled connective tissue. Ventrally, the tongue is lined by a keratinized stratified pavement epithelium. The morphology of the tongue of G. microtarsus resembles that described in carnivores and marsupials Didelphidae regarding its microscopic structure, differing only in the distribution and number of papillae.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to describe the surface structure of the lingual papillae in Anatolian Water Buffaloes using SEM. Six male Anatolian Water Buffaloes were used. Filiform, lentiform and conical papillae were determined three types as mechanical papillae. Fungiform and vallate papillae were observed two types as gustatory papillae on the tongue in Anatolian Water Buffalo. The filiform papillae were observed on the apex and body of the tongue, besides randomly identified lateral surface of the body. The conical papillae differed from the filiform papillae with its larger size and non existence of the secondary papillae. The fungiform papillae was round in shape and mushroom-like, scattering among the filiform papillae on the dorsal surface of the apex, body and the root of the tongue. The fungiform papillae's taste pores and creter-like structure were determined. The lentiform papillae were determined in two types. The borders of the cells and the micro-pitted appearance were defined at the lentiform papillae. In the vallate papillae bud fosse and a thick annular pad was found. These differences on the morphological structures of the lingual papillae were considered to be related to genetic diversity.

ABSTRACT

Three chamaeleon species including Chameleon Chamaeleo chamaeleon, Chameleon Chamaeleo africanus, and Chamaeleon vulgaris were collected and their tongue were dissected and examined morphologically and investigated using light and scanning electron microscopy. Both species showed similar histological manifestation of lingual papillae and tubular glands with dense mucous secretion especially in Chamaeleon vulgaris. There is no keratinization of lingual surfaces. Ultrastructurally, filliform represent the only pattern of lingual pappillae and take either cylindrical, conical and leaflet structure.Although the examined chalmaeleon species collected from different habitat, it shows almost similarities in their histological and ultrastructural structures.

ABSTRACT

The Bradypus variegatus inhabits the forests of South America and feeds from leaves, branches and sprouts from different plants. Due to its diet and the lack of literature on the morphological aspect of Xenarthras, five Bradypus variegatus tongues from animals which died from natural causes were evaluated, and they came from Pará State Museum Emílio Goeldi and were donated to the Laboratory of Animal Morphological Research (LaPMA) from UFRA, for revealing the different types of papillae and epithelial-connective tissue. Macroscopically, the tongues presented elongated shape, rounded apex, body, root, median sulcus in the root's apex, and two vallate papillae. The mucous membrane of the tongue revealed a keratinized stratified pavement epithelium, while the ventral surface of the tongue was thin and smooth, not provided with any type of papillae. However, the dorsal surface of the tongue was irregular with the presence of three types of papillae: filiform, fungiform and vallate papillae. The filiform papillae found were of a simple type, presenting a rounded base, irregularly distributed with a larger concentration and development on the tongue's apex and body. The fungiform papilla showed a practically smooth surface with irregular format, with the presence of gustatory pores; these were found all over the dorsal surface, with larger concentration at the rostral part of the apex. Only two vallate papillae were observed disposed in the root of the tongue, surrounded by a deep groove, and revealing several taste buds. The tongues from Bradypus variegatus presented gustatory papillae similar to the ones described for other Xenarthras species and wild mammals...

Macroscopicamente, as línguas apresentaram formato alongado, ápice arredondado, corpo, raiz, sulco mediano do ápice à raiz e duas papilas valadas.

ABSTRACT

The tongue of birds presents diversified morphologic characteristics, related directly their feeding habits and may be adapted to food capture. Penguins of the Spheniscidae family are pelagic birds that are totally adapted to the marine environment. The objective of this study was to describe the morphology of the tongue in Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus). In order to investigate these characteristics, six tongues of juvenile S . magellanicus were collected and their morphology analyzed macroscopically and microscopically. The tongue of the Magellanic penguin has a fusiform shape with a round apex that is narrower than the root, following the shape of the beak. The epithelium of the tongue of the Magellanic penguin showed to be stratified and very keratinized, with the presence of lingual papillae that showed a caudally inclined apex. The neighboring connective tissue showed absence of mucous glands. The cartilaginous skeleton was observed in the medial region of the tongue, extending from the base to the apex. The structure of the tongue of the Magellanic penguin showed to be similar to that of other penguin species, but also showed peculiar characteristics that were not observed in other bird families.

ABSTRACT

The morphology of the lingual papillae in a female Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The tongue was 22.3 cm in length and 7.1 cm in width. Numerous filiform papillae were distributed over the entire dorsal surface of the tongue. SEM examination of the tongue revealed two types of mechanical papillae, i.e. filiform and conical papilla, and two types of gustatory papillae, i.e. fungiform and vallate papilla, on the dorsal surface of the tongue. Each filiform papilla consisted of one primary papilla and several secondary papillae. The filiform papillae on the anterior part of the tongue were divided into one primary and 6~14 secondary papillae. Unlike other mammalians, however, secondary papillae in the mid-part of the tongue showed pineal-like papillae. In the posterior part of the tongue, secondary papillae were rare or absent. Fungiform papillae were surrounded by filiform papillae and densely distributed on the lingual surface. There were two vallate papillae on the borderline between the lingual body and root of the tongue. A vallate papilla contained two secondary papillae inside the grooves. Conical papillae were located in the area of the vallate papillae and covered the posterior part of the tongue root. No foliate papillae were seen on both margins of the posterior part of the tongue. Our results indicate that the structure on the lingual papillae of the Bengal tiger is somewhat different from that of other mammals.

ABSTRACT

For the comparative analysis and description of the morphology of the tongue and taste buds as well as the distribution of these we have used three animals of different age groups (puppy, young adult), of two species of primate, Callithrix penicillata (black-tufted-ear-marmoset) and Alouatta caraya (black-howler-monkey), both being observed by scanning electron microscopy. The animals of the species Callithrix penicillata were from a commercial breeding of wild animals in Atibaia-SP and they had died of natural causes, and the specie Alouatta caraya were from the collection of Macroscopic Anatomy Laboratory of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science University of São Paulo (FMVZ-USP). With the material analyzed and the technique employed could be seen that the tongue of black-tufted-ear-marmosets and black-howler-monkeys had examined lingual papillae similar to those described for other primate species. The tongue has morphological differences, especially for some types of lingual papillae, at the expense of advancing age of the animals. Overall, we found four types of lingual papillae, which are: filiform, fungiform, vallate and litter. The tongues of the black-howler-monkey had characteristics of animals with herbivorous diets. Possessing this way with the filiform papillae varied formats (crown, spear, multifilament), according to the regions of the tongue, and also robust taste, especially in the lingual prominence. Since the tongues of the black-tufted-ear-marmosets owned features of omnivorous animals. With filiform-shaped crown, large amounts of fungiform papillae and foliate papillae developed. It was observed that the changes of tongue papillae that occur in animals after birth correlated with the change in the types of foods consumed. Being suspected then conclude that diets have direct relation to the morphological and structural of the lingual papillae now here in the animals analyzed.

ABSTRACT

A histologia revelou abundante tecido queratinizado.

The morphology of the lingual papillae of domestic goat (Capra hircus) was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM). Filiform, conical and lentiform papillae exert mechanical function whereas fungiform and valate papillae have gustative function. Filliform papillae were distributed all over the lateral and dorsal surfaces of the tongue. They present a conical shape with the thin ends pointed caudally; and possess several secondary processes, of different sizes, with the same orientation. Histological examination of these papillae revealed abundant queratinized tissue. Fungiform papillae were observed on the dorsal and lateral surface of the apical region and body of the tongue. Present a fungi-like shape, with a thick cornified epithelium and taste buds distributed on the surface. Lentiform papillae were distributed over the median line of the dorsal torus, presenting projections above the surface of the tongue. Some displayed pyramidal shapes; other were more flattened. Valate papillae were observed on the lateral surface of the posterior part of the torus and present a rounding shape delimited by a deep groove. These papillae possess taste buds on their lateral wall that open up on the groove. Conical papillae were observed on the lingual torus and present an extended shape, with a wide base and a blunt tip. Although the main morphological and structural characteristics of the lingual epithelium are species-specific, some features may be influenced by the type of food and alimentary habits. Therefore, the present study provides a histological and ultrastructural description of the tongue of the domestic goat fed with mixed food (grass and concentrate).

ABSTRACT

The dorsum of the tongue of Dasypus hybridus (Desmarest, 1804) studied by scanning electron microscopy, shows conical and branched filiform, fungiform and vallate papillae. No foliate papillae were seen. Conical filiform papillae are placed in the apex of the tongue and posterior to the vallated ones. Branched papillae are compactly distributed over the entire dorsal surface of the tongue. Fungiform papillae are more abundant on the first third of the tongue and they are distributed between filiform papillae. Only two vallate papillae were observed placed in the posterior third of the tongue, surrounded by a deep grove. The presence of taste buds on fungiform and vallate papillae indicate that both are involved in the sense of taste, while the filiform ones have a mechanical and protective role. The morphological characteristics of the tongue of Dasypus hybridus are comparable with those of other species of armadillos.

The neurohistologic observations were performed using the specimens prepared by Winkelmann and Schmitt silver impregnation method. The tissues were fixed in 10 percent formalin solution and sections of 40µm thickness were obtained by Leica Cryostat at -30ºC. The sections of dorsal mucosa of White-lipped peccary tongue showed numerous filliform and fungiform papillae, and two vallate papillae on the caudal part. The epithelial layer revealed queratinized epithelial cells and the connective tissue papillae of different sizes and shapes. Thick nerve fiber bundles are noted into the subepithelial connective tissue of the papillae. The connective tissue of fungiform and vallate papillae contained numerous sensitive nerves fibers bundles forming a complex nerve plexus.

ABSTRACT

The dorsal surface of the tongue of Zaedyus pichiy (Desmarest, 1804) was examined by scanning electron microscopy. Conical and branched filiform, fungiform and vallate papillae are described. No foliate papillae were seen. Conical filiform papillae are distributed in the apex, both lateral edges and caudally to the vallated ones. The branched papillae represent the most numerous type of lingual papillae; they are distributed over the entire dorsal surface of the tongue. The fungiform papillae are placed among the filiform ones, more densely distributed on the tip of the lingual apex. In the posterior third of the tongue there are two vallated papillae surrounded by a deep circular grove. Fungiform and circumvallate papillae are related to the sense of taste; openings of taste pores are visible on their surface. The filiform papillae have a mechanical and protective role.
