ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Background: There is no consensus on the ideal size of intestinal loops in gastric bypass of bariatric surgeries. Aim: To evaluate the metabolic outcome of patients submitted to gastric bypass with alimentary and biliopancreatic loops of different sizes. Methods: Was conducted a retrospective cohort study in diabetic obese patients (BMI≥35 kg/m2) with metabolic syndrome submitted to gastric bypass. The patients were divided into three groups according to the size of the intestinal loop: group 1, biliopancreatic limb 50 cm length and alimentary limb 100 cm length; group 2 , biliopancreatic limb 50 cm length and alimentary limb 150 cm length; and group 3, biliopancreatic limb 100 cm length and alimentary limb 150 cm length. The effect of gastric bypass with different sizes of intestinal loops in relation to the parameters that define metabolic syndrome was determined. Results: Sixty-three patients were evaluated, and they had a mean age of 44.7±9.4 years. All were diabetics, with 62 (98.4%) being hypertensive and 51 (82.2%) dyslipidemic. The three groups were homogeneous in relation to the variables. In 24 months, there was a remission of systemic arterial hypertension in 65% of patients in group 1, 62.5% in group 2 and 68.4% in group 3. Remission of diabetes occurred in 85% of patients in group 1, 83% in group 2 and 84% in group 3. There was no statistical difference in %LEW between the groups, and waist measurements decreased in a homogeneous way in all groups. The size of loops also had no influence on the improvement in dyslipidemia. Conclusion: Variation in size of intestinal loops does not appear to influence improvement in metabolic syndrome in this group of patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the association between excessive iodine intake and lipid disorder in human bodies. Methods Based on the NTTST sample survey on water iodine in Suining of Jiangsu province, this study involved 81 residents whose drinking water containing excessive iodine and 101 residents who drank water with normal iodine content. Blood samples were tested and compared on lipids (TG, TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, apoAl, apoB) between the two groups, after adjusting the influences of age and gender. The study also compared the abnormal rate of each lipid indicator between the two groups. Corresponding RR values and 95% confidence interval were calculated. Correlation between iodine content in drinking water and blood lipid was also studied. Results apoA1 in the group with excessive iodine intake was significantly lower than that in the normal iodine group, while there were no significant differences between the two groups in other lipid indicators. The abnormal rate of HDL-C of excess iodine group (16.88%) was significantly higher than the rate of normal iodine group (7.22%) while there were no significant differences between the two groups in other lipid indicators. Both apoAl and HDL-C in the excess iodine group had a negative correlation with water iodine, while the other indicators of two groups had no correlation with water iodine. Conclusion Drinking water with excess iodine might increase the risk of lipid disorder.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The present study evaluates the effectiveness of Cordia salicifolia in reducing serum total cholesterol and triglyceride levels in mice on a hyperlipidemic diet. Methodology: 40 specimens of mice (Mus musculus, mean weight 54 ±5 g and mean age 50 ± 5 days) were studied. They were divided into 4 groups of 10 animals each: mice on a normal diet receiving water, mice on a hyperlipidemic diet receiving water, mice on a normal diet receiving Cordia salicifolia extract, and mice on a hyperlipidemic diet receiving Cordia salicifolia extract. Results and conclusion: There was a serum total cholesterol reduction in the normal diet + extract group as well as in the hyperlipidemic diet + extract group. Also, the serum triglyceride reduction observed in animals on the hyperlipidemic diet + extract was significant as compared to mice on the hyperlipidemic diet + water (AU)

ABSTRACT

Due to the observation, lipid disorder and AT III, PS, PC factors having an important role in the formation of clots in blood vessels, cerebral infarction. This study was carried out on 123 patients with cerebral infarction and 52 normal persons. Results: The normal values of AT III, PS, PC were equal to the normal values of foreigners: AT III: 115.88719.129%; PC: 108.36019.767%; PS: 109.93725.108%. The reduction of AT III, PS, and PC had the important role in cerebral infarction, especially the reduction of PS. This relationship had statistical meaning. There was relationship between AT III and triglyceride; PS and cholesterol; PS and LDL-C in patients with cerebral infarction
