ABSTRACT

Objective:To determine the adverse effects of continuous circulatory support on liver and kidney function in experimental animals using left ventricular assist devices (LVAD).Methods:Six healthy experimental sheep were selected and implanted with HeartCon type LVAD. The liver and kidney indexes of experimental sheep before and 70 days after operation were detected, including urea (UREA), creatinine (CREA), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and total bilirubin (TBIL), and the functional changes of liver and kidney were evaluated. Results:The preoperative levels of UREA, CREA, ALT, AST and TBIL in the six experimental sheep were (4.60±1.51) mmol/L, (94.80±23.10) μmol/L, (16.20±6.87) U/L, (82.60±17.33) U/L, and (0.52±0.25) μmol/L, respectively. Compared with the indexes before the LVAD implantation, there was no significant change in CREA levels in experimental sheep after the implantation (all P>0.05). After the implantation, the levels of UREA, ALT, AST and TBIL increased to varying degrees within 1 to 14 days after the implantation. At the end of the study, the levels of UREA, ALT, AST and TBIL have returned to the preoperative levels, and the differences were not statistically significant (all P>0.05). Conclusions:Within the 70 days of continuous circulatory support with HeartCon-type LVAD, no evidence of adverse effects of continuous flow LVAD on the liver and kidney function of experimental animals was found. HeartCon-type LVADs are able to provide adequate circulatory support to maintain proper end-organ function.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to describe the hematological and biochemical complications in cattle of southwestern Paraná region infected with Anaplasma, comparing these changes with the parameters presented by healthy cattle from the same region. We evaluated 40 cows with milk aptitude, 20 clinically suspected of being infected by the parasite and other 20 healthy, which served as a control group. Blood counts were performed in automated hematology counter. For the differential white cell count and agent search was held smears. Albumin analysis, total protein (TP), urea, creatinine, aspartate-aminotransferase and serum gamma-glutamyl transferase were carried out in semi-automatic biochemical analyzer. The results were evaluated using SPSS, version 20.0, and submitted to the Student t test. The diagnosis was made by identifying the hemoparasite in blood smears. Infected mice had a parasitemia ranging from 11 to 20%. We found statistically significant differences (p<0.01) among the following: hematocrit of infected (17,99±1,49%) and healthy controls (29,38±0,96%); number of red blood cells infected (3,71±0,39x106 / µL) and healthy controls (7,23±0,37x106 /µL); of infected hemoglobin (6,08±0,65g/dL) and healthy controls (9,96±0,33g/dL); VCM infected (52,60±3,07fL) and healthy controls (41,34±1,31fL); of infected monocytes (1353,27±373,61/µL) and healthy controls (517,84±113,22/µL); PT (total protein) of infected (7,60±0,18g/dL) and healthy controls (5,90±0,28g/dL). Infected animals showed marked anemia and serum increase in PT. We conclude that these blood parasites cause monocytosis and severe clinical signs resulting from severe anemia, but do not alter markers of liver and renal function of cattle in the clinical form of Anaplasmosis.

ABSTRACT

The liver and kidney are very important organs of the body that play vital roles of detoxification of compounds and removal of waste products respectively. In this research, some liver and kidney function tests were carried out on albino mice infected with malaria parasite to know the effect of treatment with extract on them. Pulverised dried seeds of Picralima nitida were extracted using ethanol. Serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities, total bilirubin, total protein, urea and creatinine levels and histopathological studies on liver and kidney tissues were performed. From the results of the experiment, significant (p < 0.05) reductions were observed in serum levels of urea, creatinine of the treated groups compared to the positive control (group infected with malaria parasite and treated with 3% tween 80) on days 3 and 5 post treatment. There was non-significant (p > 0.05) reduction in serum AST and ALT activities of the groups treated with 20, 40 and 80 mg/kg b.w. of the extract on days 3 and 5 post treatment compared to the positive control. Groups treated with 20 and 40 mg/kg b.w. of the extract showed significant (p < 0.05) reduction in bilirubin level on days 3 and 5 post treatment compared to the positive control. All the treated groups showed significant (p < 0.05) elevation in serum total protein on day 3 post treatment while the group treated with 80 mg/kg b.w. of the extract showed significant (p < 0.05) elevation in total protein on day 5 treatment compared to the positive control. Histopathological studies on the hepatic tissues of the treated mice showed lesser inflammatory cells around the portal areas than the untreated. No lesions were noticed in the renal tubules of both the treated and untreated mice. From the results of this experiment, it is now obvious that Picralima nitida seeds possess good hepato-protective properties.

ABSTRACT

Comparative effects of oyster mushrooms on plasma and fecal lipid profiles and on liver and kidney function were evaluated in hyper and normocholesterolemic rats. Feeding of hypercholesterolemic rats a 5% powder of oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus, P. sajor-caju and P. florida) reduced the plasma total cholesterol level by 37%, 21% and 16%, respectively and reduced the triglyceride level by 45%, 24% and 14%, respectively. LDL/HDL ratio decreased by 64%, 45% and 41% for P. sajor-caju, P. ostreatus and P. florida fed rats, respectively. Mushroom feeding also reduced body weight in hypercholesterolemic rats. However, it had no adverse effect on plasma bilirubin, creatinin and urea nitrogen level. Mushroom feeding also increased the total lipid and cholesterol excretion in the feces. The present study reveals that feeding of 5% oyster mushroom powder does not have detrimental effects on the liver and kidneys rather may provide health benefits for the cardiovascular-related complication by decreasing the atherogenic lipid profiles.
