ABSTRACT

Incidence of diabetes is significantly increasing day by day in last two decades. Around 422 million people were said to be diabetic in 2014 according to a data published by WHO. The prime cause for globally increasing rate of diabetes is the changed lifestyle of the people like sedentary lifestyle, fast foods, junk foods, lack of exercise, mental factors like stress etc. All the patients with increased glycemic index may not be established diabetes. It may be simple Ajeerna, Grahani dosha or Amapradoshaja vikara also. Diabetes is compared with the near similar condition in Ayurveda called as Prameha. Incidence of diabetes is increasing day by day globally. Ayurveda being the oldest medicinal system of the mankind, states this unique condition since the time immemorial. It is said to be one of the Santarpanajanya vyadhi. Even though the explanation of Prameha is found in scattered manner in Brihatrayee and Laghutrayee, here we have considered Charaka samhita as a base to the present article. The aim of article is not to prove Prameha as diabetes or vice versa, instead explain a different approach towards treatment of Prameha based on Hetu (cause), Linga (symptoms) and Aushadha (medicine) triad. It is not important to name a disease, but to treat based on the Dosha vitiated and Samprapti involved

ABSTRACT

Prevention is always better than cure especially in diseases such as Type 2 DM which is fast gaining the status of a potential epidemic in India with more than 62 million diabetic individuals currently diagnosed with the disease. The disease Madhumeha can be correlated with Type 2 DM. The disease is characterized by metabolic abnormalities and long term complications involving the eyes, kidneys, nerves and blood vessels. Madhumeha being an Anushangi vyadhi will make the person suffer for life time. Complications are further more difficult to treat. Hence it is always recommended in Ayurvedic classics to prevent the manifestation of diseases as much as possible and also to prevent the Upadravas if Madhumeha is already manifested. A good and proper diet in disease is worth a hundred medicines and no amount of medication can do well to a patient who does not follow a strict regimen of diet. Pathya ahara is the first and foremost step while considering the prevention of Madhumeha. Another factor which has important role in the disease manifestation is improper Vihara which can be considered for increased urbanisation, high prevalence of obesity, sedentary lifestyles and stress. Healthy life style has a key role in preventing Madhumeha and also to ease the life with Madhumeha by delaying the complications. Hence the present study is aimed at collecting and compiling various preventive measures which are explained by our Ayurvedic Acharyas to prevent Madhumeha and its complications.

ABSTRACT

Prameha is described as the one of the disease in Mahagada by different Acharyas. Majja Dhatudushti is one of the factor in Prameha (in Pramehadushyas Majjadhatu is included). However the term ‘Majja’ has become synonymous with nervous system, which is encased within bone like bone marrow. The Majja Dhatu is associated with entire nervous system. The nervous system and the bone marrow are treated as homologous structures in Ayurveda. According to Ayurveda, ultimately all Prameha are finally complicated into Madhumeha which can say diabetes mellitus. Diabetic mellitus can be called an epidemic of the 21st century, as The World Health Organization estimates. As estimated, about 60 to 70% of people with diabetes have some form of neuropathy, but not all with neuropathy have symptoms. There are different types of diabetic neuropathies like peripheral, autonomic, focal, etc, among these peripheral neuropathy is most common seen in the diabetics. In this study 50 diabetic patients were selected. Assessment of Majja Dhatu Dushti and Diabetic Neuropathy was done by subjective criteria i.e., symptoms and object criteria i.e. by Monofilament Test, Vibration Test and Reflexes Study. This study show that subject having Diabetes Mellitus history more than five years had Dushti of Majjadhatu and developed the symptoms of Diabetic peripheral neuropathy. This study also shows that symptoms of Diabetic peripheral neuropathy can be correlated with Majjapradoshajavikara. Present study indicated that Majjadhatu (Nervous system) gets vitiated in Madhumeha (Diabetes Mellitus).

ABSTRACT

Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by increased blood sugar level (hyperglycaemia) with or without some classical features- polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, burning sensation etc. In Ayurveda diabetes comes under Prameha, is one of the ‘Ashtau Mahagadas’. It is a Vatik subtype of Prameha called Madhumeha. Some Madhumehahar (Anti-diabetic) Ayurvedic herbal medicines are very much effective for managing the day to day diabetic life. The present article deals with a newly diagnosed case of Type 2 DM since 3 Days. Still he was not taking any allopathy medicine. By analyzing the concept of pathogenesis of this patient it was understood that Kapha- Pittavrit -Vata Dosha is the chief vitiating factor and other factors like manifestation Meda, Kleda, Vasa, Ambu and Ojas with Dhatwagni Mandya are the co-factor for it. By considering the Nidana, Dosha and Dusya (factors and co-factor), a judicial combination of Ayurveda drugs- Jamun- Gudmar- Nagarmotha Sudarshan- Giloy- Nagkeshar- Arjun Churna was advised to take orally in morning and evening with luke warm water. At the time of consultation his FBS and PPBS was too high i.e., FBS- 366 and PPBS – 614. After taking the prescribed formulation for 3 months his sugar level came down to normal range. Now patient is under supervision of OPD AIIA at fort night interval. The prescribed combination of drugs showed better response in Type 2 DM. Assessment using major Ayurveda parameters for evaluating Roga, Agni, Deha and Chetas, Bala came down to the normal level.

ABSTRACT

Present day lifestyle i.e. change in eating habits, progressive weight gain, stress, pollution, tobacco use and a sedentary life style lead to increase in number of lifestyle disorders. One of such lifestyle related disorders is Diabetes Mellitus, which if not controlled later on leads to Neuropathy, Nephropathy, Cardiomyopathy and Retinopathy. Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is considered as a most threatening complication of Diabetes Mellitus. Diabetics have a 20-25 times greater risk of blindness as compared to the normal population. In Ayurveda, Diabetes Mellitus can be coined with Madhumeha, as DR is due to its complication so it can be correlated with Madhumeha janya netra vikaar. Various Kriyakalpa procedures like Anjana, Aschyotan, Tarpan, Putpaka, other daily regimes like Snana, Padabhyanga, Abhyanga etc., are considered as highly effective procedures for the maintenance of eye health in DR. These measures help to modify lifestyle, promote psychosomatic health and thereby reducing psychosocial stress and help in prevention and management of a wide range of lifestyle disorders. The purpose of this presentation is to analyse Ayurveda’s preventive and therapeutic measures for treating DR and to evaluate how these measures can contribute towards improving the level of health care.

ABSTRACT

Background & objective: Present era is full of stress & strain due to competitive life style. Change in dietary habit leads to upsurge of Diabetes. Diabetes associated with long term potential effect on almost all systems of body. It leads to various complications. These complications can be managed by Rasayana Chikitsa (Rejuvenation therapy) according to Ayurveda which nourishes, develops & corrects the vitiated Saptadhatu. Objective: To study the Micro vascular complications in Madhumeha. To study Rasayana dravya from samhitas. To evaluate the Karmukatva (Activity) of Rasayana dravya on Micro vascular complications. Material and Methodology: Literary study of Rakta-Medodushti in complications of Madhumeha thoroughly including Charaksamhita, Sushrut samhita & Vagbhat samhita was done. Literary study of micro vascular complication of Diabetes was done, Karmukatva(Activity) of Rasayana dravya on micro vascular complications was studied. Result: Diabetic Neuropathy, Nephropathy & Retinopathy are the micro vascular complications of Madhumeha. These complications are mainly due to Rakta- Medo dushti. The Suvarna& Raupya bhasma are sheetveerya & rasayana which acts specifically as balya& give strength to nerves in Diabetic neuropathy. Medovaha& Mootravaha srotasdushti in Diabetic nephropathy cause structural changes in glomeruli. This structural change is corrected by Haridra&Triphala by their rasayana effect. Triphala act as Mehaghna (antidiabetic) by Pachana of vikrit meda. Haridra act as Medoghna (lipolytic);as it possesses laghu, ruksha guna, it reduces sclerosis. There is Rakta dushti in Retinopathy which is marked by retino vascular micro aneurysm & blot hemorrhages. Manjishtha have Pachana (digestive) & Shaman (palliative) effect on Raktagata Kapha-Pitta. It acts as rakataprasadana (blood purifier), vranaropana (wound healing). Suvarnamakshika bhasma is raktaprasadaka, acts on hemorrhagic disorders such as Retinal haemorrhages. Conclusion: On the basis of above study, Rasayana dravyas improve quality of life by alleviating micro vascular complications.
