ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Because of the widespread occurrence of cellulose in nature, many organisms use glycerol as a source of carbon and energy, so these organisms have drawn attention to the potential use of glycerol bioconversion. The bacteria Gluconacetobacter xylinus, a strictly aerobic strain that performing incomplete oxidation of various sugars and alcohols to cellulose biosynthesis. For this reason, we modify the Hestrim-Schram medium, associating glycerol, glucose and sucrose varying their concentration. The fermentations were performed statically at a temperature of 28˚C for a period of 10 days. The pH, membrane formation, crystallinity and the production of some metabolites of the 4th, 7th and 10th days was evaluated. The results showed a higher yield of membrane in the medium containing glucose, gly 1 + glu2 on 10 fermentation of 3.5 g %. Through solid-state NMR gave the crystallinity of the membranes, where there was a clear trend toward higher crystallinity membranes with 7 days of fermentation. Metabolic products found in the media by analysis of NMR spectroscopy in liquid were similar, especially for the production of alanine and lactate that were present in all media. The leucine and threonine were present in various media, although in small quantities has been found glutamate.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The type of cerebral protection used during carotid stenting in the elderly is controversial. Our objective was to evaluate the results of proximal and distal cerebral embolic protection devices (EPDs), in patients > 70 years through diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI). METHODS: Between 2008 and 2011, 60 patients with indication for carotid stenting were randomized to EPD with Mo.Ma® or Angioguard®, of which 26 patients were > 70 years of age. Results of DW-MRI performed before and 48 hours after the procedure were evaluated by an independent neurologist blinded to the type of EPD used. New ischemic lesions, their localization and size were analyzed. RESULTS: New cerebral ischemic lesions were found in 8/12 (66.7%) patients in the Mo.Ma® group and 12/14 (85.7%) patients in the Angioguard® group (P = 0.37). The vast majority of the lesions (> 90%) were ipsilateral to the treated artery in both groups and the size of the lesions was < 0.5 cm in most cases. The number of lesions per patient was lower with the Mo.Ma® device (median [variation]: 3 [1 to 8] lesions vs 15 [2 to 76] lesions; P < 0.001). All of the patients with more than 40 lesions were in the Angioguard® group. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the use of EPDs (proximal or distal), new ischemic lesions were observed in both groups in elderly patients. A proportionately larger number of patients with Angioguard® had new ischemic lesions when compared to those with Mo.Ma®. The Mo.Ma® device seems to decrease the number of lesions per patient.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare the magnetic resonance imaging findings of the pubis of professional soccer players, without history of or clinical groin pain, and non-athletes, also without symptoms, determining the prevalence of changes compatible with pubic overload. METHODS: Nineteen professional soccer players without complaints of groin pain and seventeen non-athletes, also asymptomatic, underwent pubic magnetic resonance images. Exam findings were analyzed for the presence of degenerative changes, medullar edema and tendinopathy, comparing both groups. RESULTS: High prevalence of bone edema, tendinopathy and degenerative findings in the pubic symphysis was seen in athletes, with statistically significant higher odds ratios and relative risk for the population studied. CONCLUSION: Professional soccer players are at a higher risk for developing changes in the pubic region, evidenced in magnetic resonance images, when compared to non-athletes. Those findings are not necessarily related to groin pain, and are probably related to intense stress.

ABSTRACT

The trigeminal artery (TA) is the most common embryonic carotid-vertebrobasilar anastomosis to persist into adulthood. It typically extends from the internal carotid artery to the basilar artery. Persistent primitive arteries are usually found incidentally, but are often associated with vascular malformation, cerebral aneurysm and, in case of TA, with trigeminal neuralgia. We present one patient with TA as a cause of trigeminal neuralgia and in other three as an incidental finding, on TC and MR angiograms.

ABSTRACT

Cognitive disturbances have been studied in patients with Parkinson´s disease (PD) in the last years but language dysfunction, although observed in clinical practice, are just now being explored. In this study, we investigate PD patients ability to generate words using a functional magnetic resonance (fRMI) paradigm and compare these areas with healthy volunteers. We selected 17 PD patients from the Movement Disorders Clinics of Hospital das Clinicas, Universidade de São Paulo and 20 healthy volunteers, matched for age and years of formal education. Both groups were evaluated from neurological and neurophsychological perspective and showed similar profiles, with differences only in tests that involved motor speed. Each subject was scanned twice using an overt-speech block design fRMI paradigm with visual presentation of 70 stimuli during which behavioral data were collected. Images were analyzed using a non-parametric approach, and correlation maps between fRMI results and behavioral data (percentage of correct responses) were produced. PD patients showed activity on the left dorsolateral frontal cortex, anterior cingulate gyrus, motor supplementary areas and right cerebellum during the word generation paradigm, similar to the healthy volunteers group. PD patients had increased hemodynamic response in the left dorsolateral frontal cortex and a reduction was found at anterior cingulated gyrus and motor supplementary area compared to healthy volunteers. Behavioral analyses (including error classification) did not show any differences between groups. We speculate that the difference found in subcortical areas may be related to the increment observed in the frontal dorsolateral cortex, since degeneration of mesolimbic dopaminergic pathways is described in PD associated with dysfunction on basal ganglia circuitry, especially involving the cingulated and dorsolateral loop...

ABSTRACT

Objective: To study the MRI manifestations of primary central nervous system lymphoma. Methods: MRI features of 37 patients with pathologically proved primary central nervous system lymphoma were retrospectively analyzed in the location, size, signal, space-occupying effect and enhanced features. Results: On MRI, single lesions were found in 24 cases and multiple ones in 13 cases. Among the single lesion cases, 13 lesions were located in the cerebral hemispheres, 3 lesions in the cerebellum, 2 lesions in the thalamus and saddle area, respectively. There was 1 lesion in the corpus callosum, the third ventricle, the jugular foramen, and the tentorial notch region, respectively. 95.8% lesions showed hypointense or isointense signal on T1 WI. All lesions showed hyperintense signal on T2 WI. Marked enhancement was seen in 36 cases after Gd-DTPA administration except 1 patient. Half of them were homogenous. About 45.9% cases had space-occupying effect. Conclusion: Primay central nervous system lymphoma had various MRI features and more attention should be paid to the atypical MRI manifestations.
