ABSTRACT

Abstract This study aims to know whether maladaptive child perfectionism (in its Self-Oriented, Socially Prescribed, and Other-Oriented dimensions) predicts feelings of loneliness and the perception of social support and if these results change according to the sex of the children. A sample of 364 Argentine boys and girls, with ages between 9 and 12 years old, was selected (M =10.26; SD=1.08). The children were evaluated using psychological tests created or adapted to Argentina. Multiple linear regression analyses showed that maladaptive perfectionism predicts peers-related loneliness, the affinity for being alone, and low perceived social support. In addition, variations were found in the prediction patterns according to sex. Concluding, maladaptive perfectionism deteriorates the social life of children that could augment their vulnerability for negative outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study analyzed the association of adaptive and maladaptive dimensions of perfectionism in women with eating disorders (ED), risk of ED, and inherent features of ED. The sample included 246 women aged between 13 and 19 years divided into three groups: with ED (n = 59), in risk of ED (n = 17), and without ED or risk (n = 170); for group assignation participants were interviewed with the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE). Participants completed the Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI-3) and the Almost Perfect Scale-Revised (APS-R). According to the models that state the existence of two well defined dimensions of perfectionism, adoles cents in risk of ED and with ED got higher scores in Discrepancy (maladaptive dimension), but not in High standards (adaptive dimension). Besides positive associations were found between Discrepancy and all scales of EDI-3, except for Maturity fears; however also in the ED group positive associations were found between High standards and Order with Drive for thinness, result that do not allow to confirm the adaptive value of these two latter dimensions of perfectionism among adolescents with ED.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the moderating effect of emotional regulation strategies between maladaptive perfectionism and suicidal risk in college students. Methods:Totally 1084 college students[mean age(19 ± 1)years old] in Guangdong were surveyed with the maladaptive subscale of the Chinese version of Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale(CFMPS,including concern over mistakes, parental criticism and doubts about actions),Emotion regulation Scale(ERS,including cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression),and the Suicide Behaviors Questionnaire-Revised(SBQ-R).Results:The SBQ-R scores were positively correlated with the scores of expressive suppression, maladaptive perfectionism, concern over mistakes, parental criticism and doubts about actions(r =0.14 -0.28,Ps <0.01).SBQ-R scores were negatively correlated with the scores of cognitive reappraisal(r =-0.19,P <0.01).Maladaptive perfectionism positively predicated suicidal risk(β =0.39,P < 0.001),cognitive reappraisal and the interaction between cognitive reappraisal and maladaptive perfectionism negatively predicated suicidal risk(β =-0.17,-0.14,Ps <0.001).Conclusion:It suggests that college students who have higher level of maladaptive perfectionism tend to have higher suicidal risk, and cognitive reappraisal may moderate the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and suicidal risk.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the mediation effect of self-esteem on the relationship between perfectionism and depression in college students. Methods Totally 292 college students completed Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (FMPS),Hewitt Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (HMPS),Slaney Almost Perfect Scale-Revised (APS-R),Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (SES) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI).Results Maladaptive perfectionism was positively correlated with depression (r =0.54,P < 0.01),and negatively correlated with self-esteem (r =-0.55,P < 0.01).Adaptive perfectionism was not correlated with depression (r =-0.09,P > 0.05),and was positively correlated with self-esteem (r =0.36,P <0.01).Self-esteem partially mediated the association between maladaptive perfectionism and depression. The partial mediation effect was significant (P <0.05).The mediation model fitted the data well (GFI =0.986,CFI =0.988,NFI =0.981,TLI =0.970,RMSEA =0.075).Conclusion Self-esteem has partially mediating effect on perfectionism and depression.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo explore the moderating effects of self-efficacy between perfectionism and depression.MethodsUsing a convenient sampling method,a sample of 570 university students completed almost perfect scale-revised ( APS-R),general self-efficacy scale (GSE),beck depression inventory (BDI).ResultsCorrelational analyses indicated maladaptive perfectionism was positively correlated with depression ( r =0.47,P <0.01 ),and negatively correlated with self-efficacy ( r =- 0.24,P < 0.01 ).In contrast, adaptive perfectionism was positively correlated with self-efficacy ( r =0.26,P < 0.01 ),and was not correlated with depression ( r =0.05,P > 0.05 ).Hierarchical regression analyses indicated the moderation effects of self-efficacy was significant (β =-0.12,P< 0.01 ) in that maladaptive perfectionism has closer relationship with depression when self-efficacy was low, suggesting that self-efficacy enhances the influence of maladaptive perfectionism on depression ( β =0.536,P =0.000 ),whereas high self-efficacy reduces the corresponding influence (β=0.239,P=0.018 ).ConclusionSelf-efficacy moderate the relation between maladaptive perfectionism and depression.
