ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To compare the stripping length obtained through the model of 0.012 and 0.014 of the nickel-titanium dual-stage maxillary sinus mucosa stripper, and the umbrella detacher.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Twenty-four goats (1.5-2 years old) were chosen, randomly divided into A, B, C groups, each group of eight. Group A was 0.012 model group, group B was 0.014 model group, group C was umbrella detacher group. Animal model was established, and maxillary sinus mucosa was stripped to the left and right sides of the bottom of the sinus in three groups. The data was measured when stripping to the limit or being perforated.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The average length of group A was 12.41 mm±4.35 mm, two cases perforated. The average length of group B was 23.38 mm±4.84 mm, one case perforated. The average length of group C was 2.61 mm±0.30 mm. The population mean of stripping length in three groups was not all the same calculated by analysis of variance (P<0.01). There were significant differences in the stripping length of the three groups by the SNK test (P<0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>The nickel-titanium dual-stage maxillary sinus mucosa stripper can achieve a larger mucosal stripping range. The stripper with a model of 0.014 has a moderate flexibility and safety, and it can strip a large area of sinus mucosa.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To compare the maxillary sinus mucosa's stress distribution when elevated by three lift materials.Methods:Three Finite element models of maxillary sinus mucosa with 0.3 mm thickness elevated by implant,grafting autogenous cancellous bone and hydroxyapatite respectively were established in the specific units.ANSYS finite element analysis software was used to evaluate maxillary sinus mucosa deformation by the simulated closed sinus lift surgery.Differences of Von Mises stress values of mucosa surface were calculated when maxillary sinus mucosa lift height was increased from 1 mm to 5 mm according to the a large deformation theory. Results:The Von Mises stress values on membrane surface elevated by implant,grafting autogenous cancellous bone and hydroxyapa-tite bone substitute materials showed no difference within 5 mm elevation.Conclusion:Closed maxillary sinus floor lifting operation with implant elevating the maxillary sinus membrane directly is a simple and minimally invasive way for sinus floor elevation.

ABSTRACT

The present study was carried out in order to observe the changes in the expression of the sialoglycoconjugates of the rabbit sinus mucosa after inoculation of influenza A virus utilizing a biotin labeled lectins for light microscopy with four different lectins; Maackia amurensis(MAA), Wheat germ agglutinin(WGA), Sambucus nigra(SNA), and Peanut(PNA). A comparison of the affinity of these lectins demonstrated the different distribution of sialoglycoconjugates in the ciliary layer and goblet cells. The normal sinus mucosa stained with four types of lectins showed that the sialoglycoconjugates were mainly distributed in the ciliary layer and goblet cells. Moreover, the main sugar residues of the sialoglycoconjugates were figured out to be consisted of Neu5Ac(alpha2,3)Gal, GlcNAc and Neu5Ac. Influenza A virus infection decreased the staining intensity of the mucosa with MAA, but not with WGA. The staining intensity of PNA, however, was highly increased in the viral infected mucosa. These results suggest that Neu5Ac(alpha2,3)Gal sugar residues may be required as protecting factor or modulator for Influenza A virus infectivity.
