ABSTRACT

Background: A randomized controlled trial (RCT) is the most valued method for evaluating the drug safety and its efficacy. However, due to incomplete reporting, RCTs may not be a reliable source of information and can lead to false interpretation of outcome. Aim and Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the completeness in reporting of RCTs published in the Indian medical journals (IMJs) according to the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) 2010 checklist items and to analyze, if there was a variation in the completeness between registered and unregistered trials. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in the Department of Pharmacology, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute. The clinical trials published by the IMJs between January 2020 and August 2021 were accessed online, and its full text versions published were downloaded. Completeness in reporting of the RCTs with respect to different CONSORT checklist domains was recorded. The impact of trial registration and CONSORT endorsement on the completeness of reporting RCTs according to CONSORT checklist was determined. Descriptive statistics was used to assess and summarize the data. Results: The overall completeness of reporting was 82.4%, better than the previous years. Major areas of reporting deficiencies were in the title and abstract, result, and registration domains. Registered trials reported better than unregistered. Conclusions: Endorsement of CONSORT in the journal had no difference in reporting. Although the quality of reporting RCTs in the IMJs has improved, it remains unsatisfactory. Completeness of trial reporting could be improvised by strict implementation of CONSORT guidelines.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Abstract This article deals with the discourses produced by the Argentine medical field relating to body transformation initiatives on the part of transvestites and transsexuals in Argentina from 1971-1982. Based on the compilation and analysis of a set of articles published in academic medical journals, it examines the meanings that health professionals assigned to these initiatives prior to the legal rulings and national legislation that recognized gender identity as a human right. This analysis helps identify the particular features of those body transformation initiatives during the period studied, as well as the ways in which the medical field in Argentina attached moral, technical and professional meanings to them.

ABSTRACT

Metric studies about scientific production are information products useful to academic communities. However, not many inquiries are available which quantify and evaluate the sources publishing papers about diabetic retinopathy. The present study was aimed to determine the scientific production about diabetic retinopathy published in Cuban medical journals in the period 1970-2017. A bibliographic review was conducted based on identification of records of the terms [adults - diabetic retinopathy]. Retrieval and analysis of the metadata for each paper selected was performed with the bibliographic reference manager Zotero, while Microsoft Excel was used for tabulation of results and Mindjet MindManager (2010) to develop the conceptual map. A total 56 papers about the study topic were selected upon application of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Scientific production about diabetic retinopathy published in Cuban medical journals is concentrated in the last ten years. Most of the papers were found to have been published by journals sponsored by national institutes. Regarding paper types, most were original studies of a descriptive nature, case studies and review papers, and to a lesser degree cohort, analytic and experimental studies(AU)

ABSTRACT

Background: Pharmaceutical companies used Drug Promotion Literatures (DPLs) as a major tool to advertise their new products. World Health Organization (WHO) has set some guidelines for promotion of drug literature. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate various DPLs for their accuracy and credibility as per WHO ethical criteria. Methods: This was an observational and cross-sectional study. Total 100 drugs advertisements published in various medical journals were collected from the library of the college. Advertisements were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The selected advertisements were evaluated based on the WHO ethical criteria for drug promotion. Results: From 100 advertisements, 73 were single drug whereas 27 were fixed drug combinations. Antimicrobials (16%) were the most promoted advertisements. Only 28% of the advertisements carried references to support their claim. Out of which majority (91.78%) were from journal articles. The generic name, brand name, names of active ingredients, manufacturer, distributor and dosage regimen were mentioned in majority of advertisements. Drug interactions (12%), contraindications (22%), precautions (24%) and side effects (22%) were least mentioned in the advertisements. Conclusions: It was observed that none of the advertisement followed all the guidelines laid down by WHO. Pharmaceutical companies should follow ethical regulatory measures to promote their product in various journals. The regulatory authority must ensure the pharmaceutical companies to follow ethical guidelines for publishing various drug promotional literatures.

ABSTRACT

The aim of our work was to analyze the bibliographical characteristics of 9 North Korean medical journals and articles. All journals show only ten pieces of information, such as publication dates and table of contents, and do not provide submission guidelines and journal policy. Most of the journals were published four times a year. Editorials often share government policy. Research articles are very short and compressed. The journals often publish articles on oriental medicine and medical information useful to the public. In conclusion, the journals were published in their own unique style and format, which are far from the global standard.

ABSTRACT

@#Medical journals are meant to both reflect the science behind medical practice and facilitate the advancement of the discipline.1 They present newly generated knowledge in the field, with the general aim of improving health care. The effectiveness of a journal article to convey its messages can potentially affect the development of health care. Medical information from journals used to be designed for medical practitioners alone. Now, increasingly, publishers feel the need to package the same information to make it accessible to different types of readers. Almost always, readers go to journals to look for evidence that can support decisions about health. The common questions readers ask when looking for evidence in medical literature have something to do with incidence or prevalence of conditions, effectiveness of therapy or prevention, accuracy of diagnostic approaches, and associations of exposures and outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Ten acupuncture-related articles were published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) between 1998 and 2017. Five studies showed positive results in terms of the effectiveness of acupuncture/Chinese medicine (CM); five studies showed negative results. This article summarizes the acupuncturerelated clinical trials published over the last 20 years in JAMA, and addresses what seems to be a fundamental ambivalence in Western medical journals regarding the scientific validity of acupuncture/CM. As yet there has been no consensus on the role of acupuncture in healthcare in Western countries. This is hardly surprising, considering the conflicting evidence found in published studies. Skepticism regarding acupuncture/CM is largely grounded in the fact that an accurate model for assessing the true clinical effects of acupuncture has yet to be created. This article discusses some of the pitfalls which result from applying Western-based scientific principles to CM, and suggests that in many cases, "negative" studies have been misinterpreted. The clinical experience of acupuncture practitioners is often in direct conflict with many of the negative conclusions published in journals. We are in need of an accurate model for sham and placebo treatments, and must analyze all published studies for design flaws and faulty conclusions.
