ABSTRACT

Currently, disease patterns in Japan are centered mainly on lifestyle-related diseases and diseases of the elderly, but in addition to these, mental illnesses, including stress and depression, are also increasing. This situation is expected to worsen in the future, and therefore, more efforts for health maintenance and its promotion, disease prevention, treatment of pre-symptomatic diseases, and care after illness are required more than ever before. Acupuncture and moxibustion have set "mibyo-chi" (treatment of pre-symptomatic diseases) as the highest behavioral health goal, and it recommends health maintenance and its promotion through "regimen." Acupuncture and moxibustion are based on the principle of maximum utilization of the body's self-control system through its natural healing power, which is, so to speak, the human body's renewable energy. Acupuncture and moxibustion have been trying to apply this power for the purpose of health maintenance and its promotion, disease prevention, treatment of pre-symptomatic diseases, and care after illness, respectively. The most important objectives of acupuncture and moxibustion have been health maintenance and its promotion and treatment of pre-symptomatic diseases. In the future, if society requires medical care that incorporates a social model, the era of acupuncture and moxibustion will have arrive. Acupuncture and moxibustion are based on the principle of maximum utilization of the body's self-control system through its natural healing power.

ABSTRACT

Deep sea water is sea water below a depth of 200 m. Japan is the leading country in the world on industrial applications of deep sea water, which has characteristics such as cleanliness, and is rich in various kinds of minerals and inorganic nutrients compared to surface seawater. In addition, applications of deep sea water as a useful resource have become a world interest, especially in fields of presymptomatic diseases called mibyo and in preventive medicine. Evidence of deep sea water applications in experimental and clinical medicine of the following diseases, lifestyle diseases such as dyslipidemia, high blood pressure, diabetes and arteriosclerosis and atopic dermatitis, osteoporosis, cancer, peptic ulcer, cataracts and constipation are given particular attention in this review.

ABSTRACT

“Mi-byo” (pre-disease) is a special concept in Chinese Medicine proposed about 2,200 years ago in the ancient text <i>Ko-tei-nai-kei</i>, which states that “a Saint-like Doctor” can cure “mi-byo”. However, no one has been saintly enough to explain an actual “mi-byo” status to date. In the 21 th century, as immunology has developed, the novel notion of “homeostatic inflammation” began to be postulated. Here, “homeostatic inflammation” means the self-repairing steps initiated by innate immune sensors when they encounter either PAMPs (pathogen-associated molecular patterns) or with DAMPs (danger signal-or damage-associated molecular patterns) composed of either lipids-or nucleic acids-related substances through their own TLRs (toll-like receptors) or NLRs (NOD-like receptors), respectively. If such “homeostatic inflammation” does correlate with the “mi-byo”, perhaps we can control it by using herbal medicines containing various saponins, essential oils, alkaroids, and flavonoids that may reinforce innate barriers by regulating the effect of lipids and nucleic acids.

ABSTRACT

"chi mi-byo (premorbidity) or zhi-weibing is defined as "preventive treatment of disease" in the "Annual Report on Health and Welfare 1997". In China, in the 2006 five-year plan for the "zhi-weibing" policy and in the 2008 "zhi-weibing" project, the policy has been changed in quality to emphasize prevention, "yo-jo or yangsheng (care of life)", and health for the purpose of improving lifestyle-related diseases and reducing the medical costs.<BR> The word "zhi-weibing" is used in "Suwen" and "Ling Shu" in reference the following: prevention, "yangsheng", and the initial/early treatment at the onset of disease. Additionally in "Nanjing" and "Jingui Yaolue", "zhi-weibing" means predicting the change of disease and preventing the progress of disease. Furthermore in Kampo Ikkando Medicine in Japan, it means improvement of constitution.<BR> In this symposium, I touched on the following: <BR>Volunteer activity reports at disaster areas<BR>Macroscopic viewpoint of current medical state (health issue in modern times)<BR>The relationship of health, disease, and the power to cure oneself<BR>"zhi-weibing or chi mi-byo"<BR>The world of Tao (way, path) and Mei (life)<BR>The "zhi-weibing" policy in China<BR>Symposiasts spoke on topics as follows: <BR> 1) Ascertaining the history of "zhi-weibing or chi mi-byo" and terminological issues like "chi mi-byo" or "mi-byo chi" in Japan<BR> 2) As a clinical practice of "chi mi-byo", an approach to a part of various methods of "yangsheng or yo-jo" based on the power to cure oneself and holistic healing method, the initial treatment, preventing the progress of disease, and the improvement of constitution<BR> 3)Achievement of the initial treatment of "Jingei-Kiko pulse diagnosis" and checking "the pulsation type and clinical condition"<BR>Whenever thinking about the future of the field of acupuncture and moxibustion, life quality of each and every human being, health, happiness, and medical economy, I would be much obliged if the contents of this "chi mi-byo" symposium are helpful to inspire medical care and the Society of Medicine, all healthcare professionals, and all patients.

ABSTRACT

Alzheimer's disease (AD) research from 1984 disclosed that there is 10-20 years of time for transition from normal brain to Alzheimer's disease brain. Therefore, AD is a disease with long “Mibyo” phase. Since treatment effect in AD could be partial and limited, we need to consider prevention or “Youjou” not to develop AD more seriously. Amyloid imaging with PET can be promising in the visualization of amyloid burden or Mibyo state. Several medicinal herbs have a potent anti-amyloid aggregation effect as a new class of disease-modifying drug. Yi-Gan-San which has been originally described in Ming dynasty in China is efficacious in improving behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia without developing falls or extra-pyramidal adverse effects. Multi-potent traditional medicine doctor with not only practicing traditional medicine alone, but they can also get insights on Western medicine and collecting information from abroad is warranted.
