ABSTRACT

Resumen Querión Celso es una micosis ocasionada por hongos dermatofitos que daña el cuero cabelludo principalmente a niños y en raras ocasiones a adultos. La forma de infección para los humanos proviene de los animales y del suelo y se relaciona con mala higiene personal, hacinamiento en las viviendas, condiciones de subdesarrollo y pobreza. Se presenta un caso de un niño de 9 años con una úlcera de 7 cm de diámetro en el cuero cabelludo y en forma de placa circular que presentaba material purulento, pelo quebradizo y un área alopécica. Al inicio, se abordó de manera terapéutica como una infección bacteriana; posteriormente, se solicitó estudio micológico que evidenció una coinfección por el microorganismo Microsporum gypseum. Se le confirmó el diagnóstico de tiña capitis con afección inflamatoria y se le prescribió griseofulvina, lo que resultó en una curación completa.


Abstract Kerion Celsi is a mycosis caused by dermatophyte fungi that mostly affects children and rarely adults, causing damage to the scalp. The form of infection for humans comes from animals and the soil. The infection is related to poor personal hygiene, overcrowded homes, underdeveloped conditions, and poverty. A case of a 9-year-old boy with a 7cm diameter ulcer on the scalp and in the form of a circular plaque that presented purulent material, brittle hair and an alopecic area is presented. Initially it was therapeutically addressed as a bacterial infection, a mycological study was requested, which showed coinfection by the microorganism Microsporum gypseum, the diagnosis of tinea capitis with inflammatory condition was confirmed, and Griseofulvin was prescribed, resulting in complete cure.

ABSTRACT

Wild animals can be natural reservoirs of different microorganisms, essential for monitoring these pathogens for the generation of knowledge and creation of tools aimed at programs for the prevention and control of infectious diseases, including zoonoses. The objective was to report the fungal diversity in the skin of pacas in captivity in Acre, Western Amazon, Brazil. Twenty-six animals were evaluated, from which skin samples were collected by superficial scraping, hair avulsion, and sterile plastic brush. The samples were seeded on Mycosel agar, and the phenotypic characteristics of the colonies were analyzed. In 80.8% of the samples, different fungi were isolated, from the genera Candida, Microsporum,and Trichophyton, among others. This is the first description of the identification of fungi in the skin of pacas and suggests that these animals can be considered essential reservoirs of saprophytic or pathogenic microorganisms with zoonotic potential in the Western Amazon.(AU)


Animais silvestres podem ser reservatórios naturais de diferentes microrganismos, sendo fundamental o monitoramento destes patógenos para a geração de conhecimento e criação de ferramentas direcionadas a programas de prevenção e controle de enfermidades infecciosas, incluindo as zoonoses. Assim, objetivou-se relatar a diversidade fúngica da pele de pacas criadas em cativeiro no Acre, Amazônia Ocidental, Brasil. Foram avaliados 26 animais, dos quais amostras cutâneas foram colhidas por raspagem superficial, avulsão pilosa e escova plástica estéril. As amostras foram semeadas em ágar Mycosel e as características fenotípicas das colônias foram analisadas. Em 80,8% das amostras houve isolamento de diferentes fungos, dos gêneros Candida, Microsporum e Trichophyton, dentre outros. Esta é a primeira descrição da identificação de fungos na pele de pacas e sugere que estes animais podem ser considerados importantes reservatórios de microrganismos saprófitas ou patogênicos, de potencial zoonótico, na Amazônia Ocidental.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the distribution of pathogenic fungi in patients with tinea capitis diagnosed in Xijing Hospital, Air Force Medical University in the past 10 years.Methods:A total of 871 outpatients or inpatients with tinea capitis were collected from the Department of Dermatology, Xijing Hospital from January 2011 to December 2020, and their clinical data and pathogen distribution were retrospectively analyzed. Pearson chi-square test was used to analyze differences in the pathogen distribution between children and adult patients with tinea capitis.Results:Of 871 patients with tinea capitis, 588 (67.5%) were males and 283 (33.5%) were females; 21 (2.40%) were aged less than 1 year, 266 (30.50%) aged 1 - 3 years, 352 (40.40%) aged 4 - 6 years, 187 (21.50%) aged 7 - 12 years, 4 (0.50%) aged 12 - 18 years, and 41 (4.70%) were aged 18 - 74 years. A total of 705 pathogenic strains were isolated from these patients, including 599 strains of Microsporum canis (85.0%) , 52 strains of Trichophyton mentagrophytes complex (7.4%) , 27 strains of Trichophyton tonsurans (3.8%) , and 18 strains of Trichophyton violaceum (2.6%) . Among the pathogenic fungi of tinea capitis, the proportion of Trichophyton violaceum was significantly higher in adults (8.8%) than in children (2.2%, P = 0.048) . Conclusions:In the past 10 years, the patients with tinea capitis in the Department of Dermatology, Xijing Hospital were mainly children aged 1 - 6 yearswhile adults, and adult patients with tinea capitis were uncommon. The main pathogen of tinea capitis was Microsporum canis, followed by Trichophyton mentagrophytes complex.

El Microsporum gypseum es un hongo geofílico que puede producir lesiones cutáneas inflamatorias en personas sanas. Se han descripto lesiones más extensas en pacientes inmunocomprometidos. Se presenta el caso de un paciente con dermatofitosis, con exámenes micológicos positivos para Candida sp, Epidermophytom floccosum y Trichophyton tonsurans, al que, ante la mala respuesta al tratamiento con griseofulvina e itraconazol a dosis habituales, se le realizó biopsia cutánea para cultivo que evidenció la presencia de M. gypseum. Debido a la extensión y a la mala respuesta al tratamiento, se realizó evaluación inmunológica y se diagnosticó un defecto en STAT1 con ganancia de función (STAT1-GOF). Los pacientes que tienen esta inmunodeficiencia primaria son susceptibles a las infecciones micóticas, especialmente por Candida, pero también, aunque en menor medida, a virus y bacterias. El paciente aquí presentado recibió tratamiento prolongado con antimicóticos imidazólicos sistémicos, con resolución de las lesiones.


Microsporum gypseum is a geophilic fungus that can cause inflammatory skin lesions in heathy people. More extensive lesions have been described in immunocompromised patients. We present a patient with extensive dermatophytosis, which mycological examination led the identification of Candida sp, Epidermophyton Floccosum and Trichophyton tonsurans and showed poor response to treatment with griseofulvina and itraconazol at usual doses. When skin biopsy was performed, it had positive culture for M. gypseum. Due to the extension and poor response to treatment, immunological assessment was performed and it showed a defect of STAT1 with gain of function (STAT 1-GOF). Patients with primary immunodeficiency are susceptible to fungal infections, especially Candida but also virus and bacteria, although to a lesser extent. The patient received long-term treatment with systemic imidazole antifungal recovering for the lesions.

ABSTRACT

Background:Incidence and prevalence of dermatophytosis have increased recently. The clinico-mycological characteristics of dermatophytosis in the past and present were compared to determine the difference, if any, that canexplain the present scenario.Material and Methods:Hospital-based cross-sectional study design with retrospective data comparison was done. The clinico-mycological data of 425 patients in 2019 was compared to 124 patients in 2011 with a Chi-square statistic. Result:Significant differences were observed in the following socio-demographic and disease characteristics in the present compared to the past: female gender (57.9% vs.33.9%, P-0.000002), chronicity (29.4% vs. 16.1%, P-0.003), sharing of clothes (35.3% vs. 20.5%, P-0.0014), co-morbidity of atopy (22.6% vs. 6.5%, P-0.00005), prior use of topical antifungals (64.5% vs. 30.7%, P <0.0001), prior use of systemic antifungals (43.1% vs. 13.7%, P <0.0001), prior use of topical steroids (24.7% vs. 12.1%, P-0.0028), and infection in multiple sites (25.2% vs. 11.3%, P-0.001). T.mentagrophyteswas the most common isolate in the present compared to the past (73.6% vs. 32.8%, P-0.0035). Other isolates were T.rubrum(13.2%) and M.gypseum(13.2%) in 2019 and T.rubrum(53.1%), M. gypseum(9.4%),T. schoenleinii(1.6%) and E. floccosum(3.1%) in 2011.Conclusion:T. mentagrophyteshas emerged as thedominant species. Irrational use of topical and systemic antifungals and steroids has increased considerably.Frequent training of general practitionersregarding appropriate management andeducating patients about avoidance of tight-fitting clothing, personal hygiene, and avoidance of over the counter medications, and adherence to treatment schedule can decrease the disease burden to some extent.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Pseudomycetoma is an extremely rare deep mycosis, caused by dermatophytic fungi that penetrate the tissue from infected follicles of tinea capitis. Both clinically and histopathology are similar to eumycetoma, being distinguished through the isolation of the fungus, which in the case of pseudomycetoma can be Microsporum spp. or Trichophyton spp. genre. We present a 24-year-old man with an exuberant tumor in the occipital region with fistula, whose histopathological examination evidenced grains composed of hyaline hyphae and the culture for fungi isolated the agent Microsporum canis. Combined treatment of surgical excision followed by oral griseofulvin for two years was performed, with resolution of the condition.

BACKGROUND: Tinea capitis is a cutaneous infection of dermatophytes and predominant in children. Although tinea capitis in Korea is controlled by oral antifungal medications and concerted public health initiatives, it's still a health issue.OBJECTIVE: To investigate changes in the epidemiological and mycological characteristics of adult patients with tinea capitis in southeastern Korea.METHODS: Using medical records from Kyungpook National University Hospital and Catholic Skin Clinic from 1989 to 2018, we retrospectively investigated the epidemiological and mycological characteristics of 266 adult patients (aged over 20) with tinea capitis.RESULTS: Among total 266 patients, 239 were KOH-positive. The annual incidence of tinea capitis ranged from 3 to 18 between 1989 and 2018. Of the total, 54 (20.30%) were male and 212 (79.70%) were female. Eighty patients (30.08%) were in their seventies, the most commonly affected age group. Of the remaining, 58 (21.80%) were in their sixties, and 41 (15.41%) in eighties. Among all, 77 (28.95%) visited the hospital in summer, 72 (27.07%) in spring, 64 (24.06%) in winter, and 53 (19.92%) in fall. Dermatophytes were cultured from 171 patients. Microsporum canis was the most common dermatophyte (42.48%), while Trichophyton rubrum was the second (15.79%). Of the 266 patients, 186 (69.92%) lived in urban areas and 80 (30.08%) in rural areas.CONCLUSION: The epidemiological and mycological characteristics of adult patients with tinea capitis were different from those of children in terms of annual incidence, sex distribution, and isolated dermatophytes. These results provide useful information for the treatment and prevention of tinea capitis.

Abstract: Background: Dermatophytosis is a cutaneous disease caused by filamentous keratinophilic fungi belonging to the genera Trichophyton, Microsporum and Epidermophyton, which present a high prevalence in the general population, being among the most common mycoses affecting about 20% of the world's population. Objective: To carry out the epidemiological survey of cases of dermatophytosis in patients from the Sistema Único de Saúde in a regional Laboratory in the period of 5 years (2009 to 2013). Methods: A retrospective study (January 2009 to December 2013) was carried out with a qualitative and quantitative design, through the registry book of the laboratory, Mycology Sector, where cases of patients with suspected dermatomycosis were analyzed. Results: In a 5-year period, a total of 4467 cases were suspected of having a fungal infection. Of these, 68.74% (3071) cases were of dermatomycosis. In relation to cultures with fungal growth, 12.54% (385 cases) were dermatophyte fungi and 7.97% (245 cases) non-dermatophyte fungi were isolated. Among the species identified, there was a higher prevalence of T. rubrum complex (75%), T. mentagrophytes complex (11.68%) and M. canis (7.01%). Regarding the sites analyzed, nail involvement was the most frequent in 75% of the cases. Study Limitations: This work is representative in the studied region. Conclusions: Dermatomycosis samples are the most frequent among all samples of fungal infections from these patients, with the nail being the most affected area and the fungi T. rubrum complex and T. mentagrophytes complex the most frequent.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Tinea capitis manifests either as a non-inflammatory or inflammatory type including kerion, which may cause permanent alopecia. In addition to antifungals, systemic corticosteroids (prednisolone at 1~2 mg/kg/day) have been used to reduce inflammation in patients with kerion. OBJECTIVE: We studied the clinical and laboratory features, treatments, and prognosis of tinea capitis. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 12 cases of kerion and 12 cases of non-inflammatory tinea capitis (median age, 8 years; range, 3 months~80 years) diagnosed using a potassium hydroxide mount at the National Health Insurance Service Ilsan Hospital between November 2011 and April 2018. RESULTS: Fungal cultures showed Microsporum species in 6 cases and Trichophyton species in 1 case. The duration of diseases and extent of lesions were greater in the kerion group than in the non-inflammatory tinea capitis group (p<0.05). Sixteen patients were treated with systemic antifungals. In the kerion group, 10 patients were treated with systemic antifungals (6 with itraconazole [median, 26 days; range, 21~58 days] and 4 with terbinafine [median, 24.5 days; range, 13~31 days]). The median intervals between the onset of treatment and scalp clearing (in 10 cases), the onset of new hair growth (in 9 cases), and complete regrowth of hair (in 7 cases) were 27 (range, 13~77), 33 (range, 19~63), and 89 (range, 42~180) days, respectively, in the kerion group. The median dosage of prednisolone used in patients with kerion was 0.26 mg/kg/day (range, 0.15~0.42) with good clinical response. CONCLUSION: The patients with kerion responded well to antifungal treatments. A lower dose of prednisolone was adequate when systemic corticosteroids were required for the treatment of kerion.

ABSTRACT

Objective To analysis changes in species distribution of pathogenic dermatophytes from patients with tinea capitis in the Hangzhou Third Hospital between 2015 and 2017.Methods Demographic and mycological data were collected from 321 patients with confirmed tinea capitis in the Hangzhou Third Hospital between 2015 and 2017,and analyzed retrospectively.Results Of the 321 patients with tinea capitis,180 were males,and 141 were females.Their age of onset ranged from 1 month to 70 years.There were 154 (47.9%) preschool children and 13 (4.0%) adults.A total of 321 fungal strains were isolated,including 159 (49.5%) strains of Microsporum canis,110 (34.3%) strains of Trichophyton mentagrophytes,38 (11.8%) strains of Trichophyton violaceum,8 (2.5%) strains of Trichophyton tonsurans,4 (1.2%) strains of Microsporum gypseum,and 2 (0.6%) strains of Trichophyton rubrum.There was no significant difference in the distribution of fungal species (x2 =9.09,P > 0.05) or the proportion of anthropophilic and non-anthropophilic dermatophytes among different age groups (x2 =1.85,P > 0.05).The proportion of non-anthropophilic dermatophytes significantly differed among 2015,2016 and 2017 (x2 =23.82,P < 0.01).From 2015 to 2017,the proportions of Microsporum canis were 32.5%,47.6% and 59.6% respectively,and the proportions of Trichophyton mentagrophytes were 53.0%,35.4% and 23.7% respectively.Conclusions During 2015-2017,the main population with tinea capitis in Hangzhou Third Hospital was preschool children.Moreover,the main pathogenic dermatophyte was Microsporum canis,whose proportion gradually increased year by year,followed by Trichophyton mentagrophytes,whose proportion gradually decreased year by year.

ABSTRACT

Objective To determine the location of PQ-LRP protein in Microsporum canis using the enhanced green fluorescent protein(EGFP)as a marker.Methods The total RNA was extracted from Microsporum canis,and reversely transcribed into cDNA.The PQ-LRP gene was amplified by PCR using the above cDNA as the template.The fusion gene of PQ-LRP gene and EGFP gene was linked to the plasmid pCAMBIA 1300.Microsporum canis was subjected to Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation,in order to achieve the integrated expression of the fusion gene LRP-EGFP in Microsporum canis under the regulation by the fungal universal promoter Ptrpc and terminator Ttrpc.Laser-scanning confocal microscopy was conducted to determine the cellular localization of the fusion protein.Results The expression vector pCAMBIA-LRP-EGFP was successfully constructed,and the fusion gene LRP-EGFP was expressed integratedly in Microsporum canis.Laser-scanning confocal microscopy showed that fluorescence signals of LRP-EGFP were concentrated on the cell membrane of Microsporum canis,giving a granular or cluster-like appearance.Conclusion The infusion gene LRP-EGFP can be successfully expressed in Microsporum canis,and PQ-LRP protein is located on the cell membrane of Microsporum canis.

Abstract Investigations were conducted on a case of generalized dermatitis in an African pygmy hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris), purchased as a pet. Clinical examination revealed restlessness, agitation, itching and scratching, large alopecic areas, skin congestion and thin whitish scabs. Five skin lesions were scraped and the samples were collected for laboratory tests. Microscopy revealed the presence of the mite Caparinia tripilis (Acari: Psoroptidae). A dermatophyte belonging to Microsporum genus was also isolated by culture on specific media. Selamectin spot-on and enilconazole washes were used for treatment, resulting in skin healing and spines growing. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of Caparinia tripilis dermatitis in a hedgehog in Romania.


Resumo Foram conduzidas investigações em um caso de dermatite generalizada em um ouriço pigmeu Africano (Atelerix albiventris), comprado como animal de estimação. O exame clínico revelou inquietação, agitação, coceira e arranhadura, grandes áreas alopécicas, congestão da pele e escamas finas e esbranquiçadas. Cinco lesões de pele foram raspadas, e as amostras coletadas para exames laboratoriais. A microscopia revelou a presença do ácaro Caparinia tripilis (Acari: Psoroptidae). Um dermatófito pertencente ao gênero Microsporum também foi isolado por cultura em meio específico. Para o tratamento foram utilizadas aplicação tópica com selamectina e lavagens com enilconazol, resultando na cicatrização da pele e no crescimento dos espinhos. Possivelmente este é o primeiro caso relatado de dermatite por Caparinia tripilis em um ouriço na Romênia.

ABSTRACT

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi verificar a prevalência de dermatófitos em tegumento de bovinos e ovinos hígidos e a sua capacidade de transmissão e desenvolvimento da doença. Para isso, foram coletadas amostras de pelo e descamações de 90 bovinos e 90 ovinos hígidos. Essas amostras foram semeadas em meio DTM e ágar Sabouraud Dextrose enriquecido com extrato de levedura, tiamina, antibióticos (estreptomicina e cloranfenicol) e suplementado de cicloheximida, sendo essas incubadas a 35 oC por 10 dias. As culturas positivas foram avaliadas macro e microscopicamente e, os fungos foram identificados por métodos bioquímicos. Verificou-se que as espécies isoladas com maior frequência, nos bovinos, foram T. mentagrophytes e M. gypseum. Nos ovinos, foi constatada maior ocorrência do agente T. verrucosum, seguido por T. mentagrophytes e M. gypseum. Houve também isolamento de M. canis, porém, em um número reduzido de amostras. Assim, concluiu-se que o tegumento de bovinos e de ovinos hígidos apresentou incidência elevada de dermatófitos de diferentes espécies, em amostras coletadas durante o período chuvoso do ano. Por isso, em animais jovens ou naqueles submetidos a elevados níveis de estresse e, consequente queda da resposta imunológica, o risco de desenvolvimento da dermatofitose e da transmissão dos dermatófitos neste período são eminentes.(AU)


The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of dermatophytes in healthy cattle and sheep teguments, and their ability to transmit and develop diseases. Samples of fur and flaking from 90 healthy cattle and 90 healthy sheep were collected. These samples were plated on DTM medium and Sabouraud Dextrose agar supplemented with yeast extract, thiamine, antibiotics (streptomycin and chloramphenicol) enhanced with cycloheximide. They were then incubated at 35 °C for 10 days. Positive cultures were macroscopically and microscopically evaluated, and fungi were identified by biochemical methods. It was found that the most frequent species isolated in cattle were T. mentagrophytes and M. gypseum. In sheep, a higher occurrence of the agent T. verrucosum could be observed, followed by T. mentagrophytes and M. gypseum. There was also the isolation of M. canis, but in a small number of samples. Thus, it could be concluded that the tegument of healthy cattle and sheep showed high incidence of dermatophytes from different species in samples collected during the rainy season of the year. Therefore, in young animals, in those subjected to high levels of stress and consequent drop in immune response, there is eminent risk of developing dermatophytosis and transmission of dermatophytes in this period.(AU)


El objetivo de esta investigación ha sido verificar la prevalencia de dermatofitos en tegumento de bovinos y ovinos hígidos y su capacidad de transmisión y desarrollo de la enfermedad. Para ello, se recolectó muestras de pelo y descamaciones de 90 bovinos y 90 ovinos hígidos. Esas muestras fueron sembradas en medio DTM y agar Sabouraud Dextrosis enriquecida con extracto de levadura, tiamina, antibióticos (estreptomicina y cloranfenicol) y suplementado de cicloheximida, siendo esas incubadas a 35ºC durante 10 días. Los cultivos positivos fueron evaluados macro y microscópicamente y los hongos fueron identificados por métodos bioquímicos. Se verificó que las especies aisladas con mayor frecuencia, en los bovinos, fueron T. mentagrophytes y M. gypseum. En los ovinos, se constató mayor ocurrencia del agente T. verrucosum, seguido por T. mentagrophytes y M. gypseum. También hubo aislamiento de M. canis, sin embargo, en un número reducido de muestras. Así, se concluyó que el tegumento de bovinos y de ovinos hígidos presentó una elevada incidencia de dermatofitos de diferentes especies, en muestras recogidas durante el período lluvioso del año. Por lo tanto, en animales jóvenes o en aquellos sometidos a altos niveles de estrés y, consecuente caída de la respuesta inmunológica, el riesgo de desarrollo de la dermatofitosis y de la transmisión de los dermatofitos en este período son eminentes.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Objetivo: As dermatofitoses afetam boa parte da população mundial, sendo possível observar diferentes padrões de distribuição regional em relação aos tipos e frequências de espécies isoladas. No Brasil, estas diferenças nos padrões são observadas em diversas regiões, entretanto poucos dados foram publicados na região Nordeste nos últimos anos, gerando uma lacuna de informação sobre o tema. Este trabalho teve como objetivo atualizar os dados sobre a incidência de dermatofitose na região. Métodos: Foram agrupadas as dermatofitoses confirmadas em pacientes atendidos no Laboratório de Micologia Médica da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, no período de janeiro de 2014 a junho de 2017, avaliando- se as possíveis mudanças nas espécies prevalentes. Resultados: Foram analisados 2.893 laudos, onde 268 foram positivos para dermatofitoses. O sítio de infecção variou significativamente conforme a faixa etária. Quanto à etiologia, o gênero Trichophyton foi isolado em um total de 252 amostras, o gênero Microsporum em 9 amostras e o gênero Epidermophyton em 7 amostras. Conclusão: Sobre a frequência das espécies, Trichophyton rubrum foi o agente etiológico predominante, semelhante ao já relatado em várias regiões do Brasil e do mundo, bem como em estudos anteriores da região. O dermatófito zoofílico mais comum foi Microsporum canis, corroborando com uma tendência já relatada por alguns autores. Trichophyton mentagrophytes foi isolado com maior frequência em pé e pele glabra, local em que se constitui um dos agentes etiológicos mais importantes. Contudo, foi observado um declínio significativo na sua detecção em todas as localizações, o que corrobora com estudos anteriores realizados na mesma região.

Os dermatófitos são fungos que podem causar infecções superficiais da pele, cabelo e unhas em humanos e animais. As espécies de dermatófitos mais frequentemente isoladas dos cães e gatos afetados por micoses são Microsporum gypseum e principalmente Microsporum canis. O papel crucial durante o processo de infecção é a produção de enzimas extracelulares essenciais para a invasão e estabelecimento do agente patogênico no tecido do hospedeiro. O objetivo deste trabalho foi isolar dermatófitos de cães e gatos e avaliar o perfil enzimático dos isolados obtidos. Amostras de pelos e escamas epidérmicas foram coletadas de cães e gatos em instalações veterinárias em Recife/PE, e os isolados foram identificados com base nas características macroscópicas e microscópicas. A análise qualitativa das enzimas urease, protease, lipase, colagenase e fosfolipase foi avaliada a partir dos dermatófitos isolados. Durante 10 meses, um total de 106 animais, que compreendeu de 99 cães e sete gatos com sinais clínicos, independentemente do sexo e raça foram avaliados. Apenas oito animais foram confirmados com dermatofitose, principalmente cães (n=7), sendo seis afetados por M. canis e um por M. gypseum, a raça mais afetada foi Yorkshire (n=3). No entanto, apenas um gato foi confirmado com M. canis. Não foi observada predisposição relacionada ao sexo quanto à ocorrência de dermatofitose nos cães e gatos avaliados. Os dermatófitos isolados apresentaram perfis semelhantes para as enzimas urease, lipase, protease, fosfolipase e colagenase, característica importante em infecções patogênicas. O diagnóstico clínico destas zoonoses com base na confirmação microbiológica e uma compreensão dos mecanismos subjacentes é de grande importância para o tratamento e prevenção de doenças fúngicas em animais.(AU)


Dermatophytes are fungi that can cause superficial infections of the skin, hair and nails in man and animals. The most frequent dermatophyte species isolated from dogs and cats are Microsporum gypseum, most notably Microsporum canis. The crucial role during the infection process is the production of extracellular enzymes essential for the invasion and establishment of the pathogen in the host tissue. The objective of this research was to isolate dermatophytes from dogs and cats and evaluate the enzymatic profile of the isolates obtained. Hair samples and epidermal scales were collected from dogs and cats in veterinary facilities in Recife-PE, and the isolates were identified based on macroscopic and microscopic characteristics. The qualitative analysis of the enzymes urease, protease, lipase, collagenase and phospholipase was evaluated from the isolated dermatophytes. During 10 months, a total of 106 animals, comprising of 99 dogs and seven cats with clinical signs, regardless of sex and race were evaluated. Only eight animals were confirmed with dermatophytosis, mostly dogs (n=7), being six affected by M. canis and one by M. gypseum, the race most affected was Yorkshire (n=3). However, only one cat was confirmed with M. canis. No sex-related predisposition was observed regarding the occurrence of dermatophytosis in dogs and cats evaluated. Isolated dermatophytes showed similar profiles for the enzymes urease, lipase, protease, phospholipase and collagenase, important characteristic for pathogenic infections. The diagnosis of this zoonosis based on microbiological confirmation and a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms is of great importance for the treatment and prevention of fungal diseases in animals.(AU)

La tiña capitis es considerada la infección por dermatofitos más frecuente en los niños. Los agentes etiológicos varían con el tiempo y según la zona geográfica, aunque, normalmente, son dermatofitos de origen zoofílico y, en los últimos años, también dermatofitos antropofílicos. Se presenta un caso de tiña capitis inflamatoria en un niño de 6 años de edad causada por Microsporum gypseum, un hongo geofílico patógeno para humanos y animales. Las fuentes de infección humana son el suelo, los gatos, los perros y pequeños mamíferos. Esta especie es poco frecuente como causa de dermatofitosis en el hombre, descrita, sobre todo, en tiña corporis y, raramente, en tiña capitis. En el diagnóstico de tiña capitis, identificar la especie causal es un factor determinante para el tratamiento.


Tinea capitis is considered the most frequent dermatophyte infection in children. The etiological agents vary from time to time and by geographical area, although they normally are zoophilic dermatophytes and in the last years also anthropophilic species. We report a clinical case of inflammatory tinea capitis in a 6-year-old child caused by Microsporum gypseum, a geophilic fungus pathogenic to humans and animals. The sources of human infection are soil, cats, dogs and small mammals. This species is less frequent as a cause of dermatophytosis in humans, described mainly in tinea corporis and rarely in tinea capitis. In the diagnosis of tinea capitis identifying the causative species is a determinant of the treatment.

BACKGROUND: Microsporum gypseum has been isolated from South Korea since 1966. However, the incidence of M. gypseum infection is very low. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to add massive data on M. gypseum to the literature and to provide useful information on clinical and mycological characteristics of M. gypseum. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data of 198 cases infected with M. gypseum from 1979 to 2016. The identification of M. gypseum was done with mycological examination using 15% KOH preparation and potato corn meal tween 80 agar culture media. RESULTS: The incidence of M. gypseum infection was very low in South Korea, showing a tendency to decrease. Out of 198 cases, men were 94 cases (47.5%) and women were 104 cases (52.5%). Mean age of all patients was 29.83 years old: 24.97 years old in men and 34.22 years old in women. M. gypseum infection occurred most frequently in September (16.7%) and August (16.2%). The most common clinical type of M. gypseum infection was tinea corporis (38.4%). CONCLUSION: M. gypseum infection shows very low incidence but still remains around us until recent years. We should keep in mind the characteristics of M. gypseum.

Objective To evaluate the reliability and clinical practicality of colony PCR in rapid detection of pathogenic fungi causing tinea capitis.Methods Totally,17 children with tinea capitis were enrolled from the Department of Dermatology of Wuxi No.2 People's Hospital between January 2016 and March 2017.Colony PCR was performed to detect pathogenic fungi.The results of colony PCR were compared with those of routine PCR and morphological identification,so as to evaluate the reliability of colony PCR in the identification of pathogenic fungi causing tinea capitis.Results After clinical specimens (broken hairs and scales) from the 17 patients were subjected to fungal culture,the mycelia were collected and successfully amplified by colony PCR.The time of clony PCR (mean,3.82 ± 0.50 days) for DNA template preparation was short than that of traditional morphological identification (14 days).Based on the results of conventional PCR,the accuracy of colony PCR for fungal identification was 100%,which was superior to that of conventional PCR (88.2%).Conclusions Colony PCR can be applied to the clinical detection of pathogenic fungi causing tinea capitis at specy level,and is a kind of rapid,economic and reliable molecular detection technique.

Abstract: Tinea capitis is the most common fungal infection in children. The identification of the etiologic agent helps clinicians make their therapeutic choice. Studies conducted in different countries show a changing pattern of the main etiological agents according to their regions. We performed a retrospective study in the tertiary public service in São Paulo, analyzing the isolated etiological agents in patients with tinea capitis from March 2013 to May 2015. Microsporum canis was the main agent (56.6%), followed by Trichophyton tonsurans (36.6%). Despite recent migratory movements in the city, we observed no change in the causative agent of tinea capitis.

Introducción: las dermatofitosis por Microsporum spp. son infecciones frecuentes y han experimentado cambios en los distintos continentes, durante los últimos años. Objetivo: conocer las especies del género Microsporum que causan dermatofitosis, además de analizar las diferencias según sexo, edad y localización de estas infecciones, en pacientes de la región de Valparaíso. Materiales y Método: se revisaron los informes emitidos por el Laboratorio de Micología de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Valparaíso, durante el período 2002-2016. Se seleccionaron los informes de pacientes con examen microscópico directo con hifas, artroconidios y/o microconidios, además de cultivo con desarrollo de alguna especie del género Microsporum. En una planilla Excel se registraron las variables de edad, sexo, ubicación de la lesión, resultado del examen microscópico directo e identificación de la especie. Resultado: se incluyeron 285 pacientes, el 61,4% fueron mujeres, con un promedio de edad de 16 años. El grupo de los menores de 8 años fue el que presentó más infecciones, seguido por el de 16-35 años. Las localizaciones más frecuentes fueron cuero cabelludo y uñas. La tiña capitis se diagnosticó principalmente hasta los 35 años, luego de lo que predominó la onicomicosis de pies. El agente que se aisló con mayor frecuencia fue M. canis, seguido por M. gypseum. Conclusiones: las mujeres y los menores de 8 años presentaron la mayoría de las dermatofitosis por Microsporum spp. La tiña capitis fue la localización más frecuente, especialmente en niños y la onicomicosis fue la segunda en frecuencia, principalmente en adultos. M. canis fue el agente más frecuente, seguido por M. gypseum.


Introduction: the dermatophytosis caused by Microsporum spp. are frequent infections that have been undergone through changes in the different continents during the last years. Objective: to know the species of the Microsporum genus that cause dermatophytosis, besides to analyze the differences according to sex, age and location of these infections in patients from the region of Valparaíso. Materials and Method: the reports issued by the Mycology Laboratory of the University of Valparaíso during the period 2002-2016 were reviewed. Patients who had lesions compatible with dermatophytosis, direct microscopic examination with hyphae, arthroconidia and/or microconidia, and culture with development of some species of the genus Microsporum were selected. In an excel file, the variables of age, sex, location of the lesion, direct microscopic examination and identification of the species were recorded. Results: 285 patients were included in this study, 61.4% of them were women, with a mean age of 16 years. The group of children under 8 years old present greater quantity of infections, followed by the group of 16 to 35 years old. The most frequent locations were scalp and nails. The tinea capitis was diagnosed mainly until 35 years old, after which the foot onychomycosis become predominate. The agent that was most frequently isolated was M. canis, followed by M. gypseum. Conclusions: women and children under the age of 8 years presented the most infections. Tinea capitis was the most common site especially in children, and onychomycosis was the second most frequent, mainly in adults. M. canis was the most frequent agent followed by M. gypseum.
