ABSTRACT

Objective:To analyze the research status, development trend and frontier hotspots of midwifery education in China in recent 20 years. Methods:Based on the topic of "midwifery education" or "midwifery teaching", this paper searched the periodical literatures from 2001 to 2021 on CNKI database, and used CiteSpace5.7R5 software to analyze them visually and generate knowledge map. Results:A total of 548 Chinese papers were included in this study, and the annual number of published papers showed an overall upward trend. The research field of midwifery education in China formed an obvious core team, and there was few cooperation among core author groups. Health Vocational Education, Chinese Nursing Education and Chinese Higher Medical Education were the top three journals. The six topics with the highest frequency were midwifery specialty, midwifery personnel, midwifery education, practice teaching, delivery mode and teaching mode, forming 10 clusters of midwifery education. In recent three years, the research of midwifery education in China has gradually changed into simulation teaching, flipped classroom, postpartum rehabilitation and so on. Conclusion:The research scope of midwifery education in China is wide and has formed an obvious core team, but the correlation is weak and there is less communication and cooperation among the research teams. The research in the field of high-level midwifery education is insufficient. Midwifery educators and researchers should pay enough attention to carry out in-depth research on relevant aspects.

ABSTRACT

Background: The objective of this study is to develop an educational program to improve the antenatal care practice skills of fourth-year students in the midwifery department at Balikesir University’s school of health. Methods: The control group included 39 students who had taken public healthcare courses in the 2009-2010 academic year. The intervention group consisted of 40 students who had taken the same courses in the 2010-2011 academic year. The study’s dependent variable was the skill level; its independent variable was the educational program. The data evaluation guide feedback form was collected. The students’ scores for prenatal care were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test. Results: The study found that midwives in the control group, which did not receive the educational program, did not apply some of the steps in prenatal health care, such as examining the bellies of pregnant women, measuring their folic acid, assessing laboratory tests and providing them with information about their examinations. In addition, there were other skills in prenatal health care and communication that this group either never applied or applied only after being reminded. However, almost all of the midwives in the intervention group were found to have used communication skills effectively and to have completed prenatal healthcare in the proper order and in a highly qualified manner. Conclusion: The educational program developed for midwife education and practice has been successful and effective. Almost all of the people in the control group have fully applied their healthcare follow-up skills.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop core competency of midwife practices to improve midwifery education, national examination and clinical practices. METHOD: Literature and document review and internet search and survey were used. 127 registered in the Korean Midwifery Association midwives by structured instrument were surveyed to analyze midwife's practices and work situation. RESULT: Midwifery education program has to be either a post graduate or a graduate program for people with nursing license. Midwifery practice has to be extended to a lifelong health care of all women including non-pregnant women, not just a health care of pregnant women and newborns. Thus, a primary health care of women, laws/ethics, and management skills were included in the core competencies of midwifery practice considering the international trend of future-oriented and extended role of a midwife. Also, newborn care and ability to cope with emergency situations were emphasized based on the midwife's opinion. CONCLUSION: This study has to be developed midwifery practices and education and the standard of midwifery practice has to be stated based on that result.
