ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:Due to the young age of children, the occipital condyle and foramen magnum are not fully developed, and they are prone to various diseases and injuries in the occipitocervical junction, which requires surgical treatment in severe cases. However, anatomical parameters for the development of the occipital condyle and foramen magnum in children are lacking. OBJECTIVE:To measure the morphological structure of the occipital condyle and foramen magnum by three-dimensional reconstruction technique, and to provide important anatomical parameters for occipitocervical junction lesions, related surgical procedures and forensic identification. METHODS:Imaging data of 389 cases of primitive children and adolescents involved in skull base undergoing spiral CT scanning(247 males and 142 females)aged 1-18 years were collected and divided into 1-3-year-old group,4-6-year-old group,7-9-year-old group,10-12-year-old group,13-15-year-old group, and 16-18-year-old group according to their age.Mimics 16.0 software was used to reconstruct the skull base and measure the length and width of the foramen magnum.A formula was used to calculate the area and index of the foramen magnum. We measured the length, width and height of the occipital condyle, the angle between the long axis and the sagittal axis of the occipital condyle(O-S angle),the included angle between the midpoint of the front and back edges of the foramen magnum and the connection between the back edge of occipital condyle and the intersection point of the foramen magnum(F-O angle),and the included angle between the midpoint of the front and back edges of the foramen magnum and the midpoint of the back wall of the sublingual neural tube(F-H angle).Gender, side and age differences were analyzed among the indicators. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:(1)In foramen magnum measurement, there was no significant difference between sexes in the index of the foramen magnum(P>0.05),but there were significant differences in length, width and area of the foramen magnum(P<0.05).(2)The O-S angle,F-O angle and F-H angle of the occipitral condyle were not significantly different between genders(P>0.05),but length, width and height of the occipital condyle were significantly different between genders(P<0.05).(3)There were no significant differences in the length of the occipital condyle among different groups(P>0.05),but there were significant differences in the width and height of the occipital condyle,O-S angle,F-O angle and F-H angle among different groups(P<0.05).(4)Length,width and area of the foramen magnum, length, width and height of the occipital condyle showed a wavy increasing trend with the increase of age, while O-S,F-O and F-H angles showed a wavy decreasing trend with the increase of age, while the index of the foramen magnum showed no significant change.(5)In conclusion, there are gender and lateral differences in the morphological indexes of the foramen magnum and the occipital condyle in children. These differences can provide an important reference for clinical surgical approach selection and forensic examination.
ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:The calcaneus is located in the lower posterior part of the foot and is heavily stressed.Calcaneus is complex and irregular in shape, surrounded by thin cortical bone and filled with a large number of trabeculae. The study of the microstructure, movement, and distribution of trabeculae is helpful to improve the understanding of calcaneus fracture. OBJECTIVE:The image data of calcaneus were obtained by scanning the calcaneus specimens with micro-computed tomography, and the structure of trabecular bone in calcaneus was analyzed to explore the morphology, distribution and structural characteristics of trabecular bone in calcaneus. METHODS:Dry adult calcaneus specimens were continuously scanned by micro-computed tomography, and the images were obtained after scanning and stored in DICOM format.Image data were imported into Hiscan Analyzer software to display clear and complete images of the sagittal plane, coronal plane, and the horizontal plane of the adult calcaneus. The trabecular movement of bone was observed layer by layer.According to the trabecular movement characteristics, the sagittal plane of the calcaneus was divided into six parts.A 49-mm2 region of interest was selected for each part at the same thickness as 7 mm.The three-dimensional microstructure of calcaneus and trabecular bone was obtained after three-dimensional reconstruction. After binarization, the volume fraction, surface density, trabecular thickness, trabecular space, and trabecular number parameters of the trabecular bone in the region of interest were calculated by software. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:(1)The cortical layer of the calcaneus was very thin and filled with a large amount of cancellous bone, and the cortical layer of the horn of Gissane was obviously thickened.(2)The trabecular volume fraction in the upper part of the calcaneus was greater than that in the anterior part of the lower part of the calcaneus, the central triangle, the posterior part of the lower part of the calcaneus, and the base of the calcaneus, and the trabecular volume fraction in the tubercle of the calcaneus was greater than that in the anterior part of the lower part of the calcaneus, the central triangle, the posterior part of the lower part of the calcaneus, and the base of the calcaneus. The surface density of the trabecular bone in the tubercle of the calcaneus was higher than that in the front of the lower calcaneus, the middle triangle area, and the bottom of calcaneus, and the surface density of the trabecular bone in the upper part of calcaneal bone, and the lower part of the calcaneus was higher than that in the middle triangle area. The thickness of the trabecular bone in the upper part of the calcaneus was greater than that in the tubercle of the calcaneal bone. The bone trabecular space in the middle triangle was larger than that in the upper part of the calcaneus and calcaneal tubercles. The number of bone trabeculae in the calcaneal tubercles was greater than that in the middle triangle area.(3)These results indicate that the trabeculae of rod bone were mainly distributed in the middle triangle area. The surface density of trabeculae was the smallest, the volume fraction was smaller, and the space between trabeculae was the largest. This part of the bone is relatively loose. The compression resistance is poor when subjected to high impact. The trabecular bone fractures first occur, which is a prone site for fractures.
ABSTRACT
The present work aims to isolate and characterize the bacterial endophytes associated with different maize genotypes varying in resistance to disease reaction against Macrophomina phaseolina. A total of 50 endophytic bacteria were isolated from root and stem of healthy maize plants at 30 DAS, 60 DAS by using two different media like TSA, NA medium and maximum number of endophytic bacterial population were recovered from root followed by stem in all the genotypes and TSA medium was found to be the most suitable medium for deciphering maximum endophytic bacterial diversity. The isolated bacterial endophytes were characterized on the basis of morphological parameters viz., size, shape, colour, margin and texture, elevation, gram staining reaction and it was observed that Gram positive bacteria (68.0 %) formed the dominant group. The colony characterization revealed that circular forms (38.0 %) were dominated. Among the colony features the colonies with entire margins (66.0 %) and convex elevation (44.0 %) were found to be dominating.
ABSTRACT
SUMMARY: The results of numerous medical and kinesiological studies indicate the existence of differences in pulmonary function in relation to age, body height, and the relationship between certain parameters of body composition. The aim of this study was to determine the state of morphological characteristics and pulmonary function of naval saboteurs and ground Special Forces of the Armed Forces of Montenegro. The sample of participants included 30 naval saboteurs aged 30.3±6 years and 30 members of the ground special forces aged 25.6±5 years. The sample of measuring instruments included 4 indicators each for the evaluation of longitudinal dimensionality, transversal dimensionality, mass and body volume, subcutaneous fat, body composition, and pulmonary function. The central and dispersion parameters of the variables were calculated. The specificities of body composition of the naval saboteurs and members of the ground Special Forces of the AF of Montenegro were determined, while the parameters of lung volume and capacity and the parameters of airway flow indicated an excellent state of their respiratory function. Furthermore, it was determined that the studied members of the armed forces had no individual health risks in the sense of the onset of obesity or obstructive ventilatory defects. The results obtained indicate the need for further studies which would predominantly focus on the impact of individual morphological measurements and parameters of body composition on pulmonary function. This would provide important data both for the armed forces in the sense of improving the training system and the realization of specific tasks, as well as for kinesiology as a science from the aspect of determining certain regularities in the functioning of the human body in specific living and working conditions in the armed forces.
ABSTRACT Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Wild.) is an Andean crop that originated from the Andes of South America, with great agronomic, industrial, pharmaceutical potential and also a great capacity to tolerate adverse environmental factors. In Colombia, more accurately in the Department of Nariño, Cauca, Cundinamarca and Boyacá. Shows great genetic variation, both molecular and morphological, which organization remains poorly documented. In Boyacá, there are few studies on the morphological characterization of cultivated materials, and there is no certified planting material, with farmers planting a mixture of materials. Qualitative and quantitative descriptors and principal component and cluster analyses were used to characterize the structure of the intra-population phenotypic variation in Blanca de Jericó quinoa materials grown in the Department of Boyacá. The principal component analysis explained more than 70 % of the observed variation, with the AP, LP, DP, LHS, and AHS characteristics being more variable. The cluster analysis showed grouping by characteristics, such as AP, panicle color, and the presence of pigmented axillae. Results show that the variance in morpho-phenological traits was concentrated at the intra-population, due to high variation at the inter-individual level. A more efficient selection process should be carried out to find materials or "pure" varieties with higher yields, resistance to biotic and abiotic factors, and adaptation to local conditions, which make quinoa an economically profitable crop in the Boyacá department.
ABSTRACT
The indicators for structural analysis of blood formed elements are prominent in the assessment of pathologies, diagnostics and the degree. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the ongoing alterations that reflect on the structural characteristics of blood formed elements based on the hormonal imbalance among menopausal women with uterine tumors. Blood samples from the women with benign (n=20), malignant (n=20) uterine tumors, and healthy menopausal women (control, n=20) were used. Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits were used for the quantitative determination of hormones. The blood formed elements ultrastructure observations were conducted using transmission electron microscope. Compared to control (33.8±0.7 pg/mL), estradiol level was higher in benign (45.7±0.9 pg/mL) and malignant (70.7±3.7 pg/mL) cases (P< 0.001). Similar pattern was noted in testosterone levels [control=0.38±0.03 ng/mL, benign=0.55±0.04 ng/mL (P< 0.01), malignant=1.56±0.14 ng/mL (P< 0.001)] was higher in malignant cases. In contrast, progesterone levels were decreased in the disease cases [control=0.93±0.05 ng/mL, benign=0.44±0.003 ng/mL, malignant=0.31±0.02 ng/ml (P< 0.001)]. Assessments of the morphologic structure of erythrocytes revealed pathological forms of erythrocytes (poikilocytosis) in case of benign, as well as in malignant tumors. particularly target cells (codocytes), hamlet cells, teardrop cells (dacrocytes), sickle cell (drepanocytes) erythrocytes. Using ELISA and transmission electron microscopy our results demonstrate that in case of malignant uterine tumor quantitative/structural changes occur in blood formed elements indicating ongoing alterations in hormonal imbalance. Assessing these changes in structural characteristics would be useful in examining uterine pathologies and subsequent treatment plans
ABSTRACT
SUMMARY: To evaluate the skeletal, dento-alveolar and soft tissue morphology changes after maxillary molar distalization by clear aligner therapy and identify the significant efficacy of molar distalization,18 patients in conformity with the inclusion criteria were selected. Pre- and post-treatment Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) were examined to measure the angular and linear parameters. All subjects were completed non-extraction clear aligner treatment by distalizing molars. A paired-t test and independent-samples t-test were performed to observe the difference between before and after treatment and the difference between the first molar and second molar respectively. P-values <0.05 were considered statistically significant. Predicted movement rate was calculated by the formula: (actual movement(mm)/planned movement(mm)) x100%. Most variables of pre- and post-treatment showed no statistical difference(P<0.05), excepting SNA angle (P<0.05) and Upper lip/E-line linear (P<0.01) due to incisor retraction. The first and second molar revealed a translation movement without significant tipping and vertical movement. Clear aligners provided a high predictability (83.44 %) of distalization the maxillary first molar, and 85.14 % of the maxillary second molar. Clear aligners can effectively achieve distal displacement of molars.

SUMMARY: This study aimed to explore the effects of a single moderate-intensity aerobic endurance running program on the morphological characteristics of normal-weighted and overweighted female adolescents and whether effects differ between individuals of different nutritional statuses. A total of 47 adolescent girls participated in this randomized controlled trial. Before and after 12 weeks of intervention, measurements were obtained for body height, body mass, BMI, triceps, subscapular, abdominal, thigh, and calf skinfolds, and chest, abdominal, thigh, and calf circumference. The total duration of the program was 12 weeks, with a frequency of 2 hours/week (24 sessions). The individual session lasted 60 minutes, and the intensity ranged from 60 % HRmax to 80 %. The findings from the present study suggest that the 12-week aerobic endurance running program induced changes in morphological characteristics of female adolescents. The significant reductions in body mass and BMI were small for normal-weight adolescents (-2,64 % and -3,48 %) and moderate for overweight adolescents (-4,14 % and -4,36 %) following the experimental program. The magnitude of reductions in the skinfold thickness was small for both groups (triceps, subscapular, abdominal, and calf) and moderate for thigh skinfold and a sum of skinfolds in the overweight group. The reductions in the magnitude of all circular measures were small for both groups. It ranged from - 1.59 % to -2.59 % for normal-weight and from -2.54 % to -3.92 % for overweight adolescents, respectively. Additionally, the effects of the applied program seem more favorable to overweight than normal-weight adolescents. This study's current findings indicate that the 12-week aerobic endurance running program is effective due to improvements in morphological characteristics, body mass, and BMI of female adolescents. Additionally, this study's findings show that applied aerobic endurance running program proved more effective for overweight adolescents.

ABSTRACT
Objective:To explore the value of dual-layer spectral detector CT in differentiating the diagnosis of lung cancer and inflammatory nodules. Methods:A total of 92 patients undergoing enhanced chest scan from March 2019 to September 2020 at Renji Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiaotong University, were retrospectively enrolled in the study. The conventional CT parameters, spectral CT parameters were measured and the nodules′ morphological characteristics were analyzed. Later the factors with statistical significance were identified as independent variables in a logistic regression model to establish models for predicting malignant nodules. ROC curve was used to assess the diagnostic performance for the conventional CT model, spectral CT parameters and combined model, respectively. Differences in the area under the ROC curve (AUC) were analyzed by the DeLong test. Results:Lobulated sign (42 and 8, respectively, χ2=10.779, P=0.001), short burr sign (41 and 7, respectively, χ2=11.911, P=0.001), pleural indentation sign (45 and 9 respectively, χ2=11.705, P=0.001), vascular convergence sign (35 and 8, respectively, χ2=5.337, P=0.021) and the venous phase iodine concentrations (IC) value [(2.1±0.5) mg/ml, (2.3±0.5) mg/ml, t=-2.464, P=0.016], normalized iodine concentrations (NIC) value (0.40±0.06, 0.45±0.08, t=-6.943, P<0.001), and Z-effective (Z eff) values (8.38±0.21, 8.49±0.19, t=-2.122, P=0.037) were significantly different between the lung cancer group and the inflammatory group, while other CT signs and CT indicators were not significantly different between the lung cancer group and the inflammatory group ( P>0.05). The conventional CT model was established with lobulated sign, short burr sign, pleural indentation sign, vascular convergence sign, and the AUC for differential diagnosis of lung cancer and inflammatory nodules was 0.827. The spectral CT parameter model was established with venous phase IC, venous phase NIC, and venous phase Z eff value, and the AUC for differential diagnosis of lung cancer and inflammatory nodules was 0.899. The conventional CT model combined spectral CT parameter model was established with the significant factors in the univariate analysis, and the AUC for differential diagnosis of lung cancer and inflammatory nodules was 0.925. The AUC of the combined model showed no significant difference from that of the spectral CT parameter model ( Z=1.794, P=0.073). However, AUC of the combined model was significantly higher than that of evaluation based on conventional CT alone ( Z=2.156, P=0.031). Conclusion:Spectral CT parameters combined with conventional CT signs can improve the differential diagnosis efficiency between lung cancer and inflammatory nodules.
ABSTRACT
Early accurate detection of inferior myocardial infarction is an important way to reduce the mortality from inferior myocardial infarction. Regrading the existing problems in the detection of inferior myocardial infarction, complex model structures and redundant features, this paper proposed a novel inferior myocardial infarction detection algorithm. Firstly, based on the clinic pathological information, the peak and area features of QRS and ST-T wavebands as well as the slope feature of ST waveband were extracted from electrocardiogram (ECG) signals leads Ⅱ, Ⅲ and aVF. In addition, according to individual features and the dispersion between them, we applied genetic algorithm to make judgement and then input the feature with larger degree into support vector machine (SVM) to realize the accurate detection of inferior myocardial infarction. The proposed method in this paper was verified by Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) diagnostic electrocardio signal database and the accuracy rate was up to 98.33%. Conforming to the clinical diagnosis and the characteristics of specific changes in inferior myocardial infarction ECG signal, the proposed method can effectively make precise detection of inferior myocardial infarction by morphological features, and therefore is suitable to be applied in portable devices development for clinical promotion.

The skull is a reliable structure for determining the sex of an adult individual; it is generally resistant in adverse conditions, allowing it to be used for the analysis of sexual dimorphism. In the present study we analysed 10 non-metric characteristics of skulls of Brazilian adult individuals in order to: Determine the strength of association between sex and the morphological characteristics of the skull, the morphological characteristic(s) with greatest diagnostic influence for sex, and analyse whether the morphological characteristics of the skull predict sex. The study included 179 macerated skulls of Brazilian adults, (69 female, 110 male). The sex of all the skulls included was identified. The investigators were calibrated prior to analysis and all the evaluations were carried out under blinding. Pearson's Chi-squared test was used. The sensitivity and specificity were analysed and a ROC curve was constructed. Binary logistic regression was carried out. The SPSS v.22 software was used, with a significance threshold of 5 %. All the characteristics analysed presented statistically significant differences (p<0.05). The frontal profile, the superciliary arch and the glabella presented the greatest sensitivity, best balance between sensitivity and specificity and greatest area under curve. The regression model with the frontal profile, superciliary arch and mastoid process was significant [X2(2) = 115,728 p=0.000, R2 Negelkerke=0.657], and presented correct sex classification in 90 % of cases (Males: 87.4 %; Females: 83.1 %). In unknown individuals for whom the skull is present, non-metric analysis of the frontal profile, superciliary arch, mastoid process and glabella can be used as instruments for sex identification.

@#Aims: Rice blast disease caused by Pyricularia oryzae is one of the major biotic diseases of rice in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. This study aims to isolate and characterize rice blast fungus obtained from infected leaf collected from four different divisions in Sarawak, viz, Miri, Serian, Sri Aman, and Kuching. Methodology and results: Twelve succeeded isolates were pre-identified as P. oryzae by morphological characteristics of spores, followed by verification through (internal transcribed spacer) ITS sequencing. The isolates were evaluated for morphological characteristics, growth rate and sporulation rate, which were grown on two types of media, (filtered oatmeal agar) FOMA and (potato dextrose agar) PDA. Morphological characterization showed that the colony surface of the different isolates varied from smooth and fluffy to rough and flattened mycelia; some were with the present of concentric rings, and some with aerial mycelia. The growth rate and sporulation rate of each isolate varied based on types of media used. Most of the isolates grew faster on PDA than on FOMA but produced higher number of spores on FOMA as compared to PDA. Conclusion, significance and impact of study: This preliminary study showed that there were variations observed based on morphological and physiological characterization for the different isolates collected in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. This study is the first step towards understanding variation in the population of P. oryzae from Sarawak.
ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND: A large amount of literature has been published on the vertebral pedicle morphology at thoracolumbar segments in adults, but little is known about the morphology of pedicles in adolescents, especially in Asian populations. Adolescent spine disorders are increasing and there are few precise morphological studies. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the anatomy of lumbar vertebrae of adolescents aged 12-15 years in Inner Mongolia, provide detailed information for pedicle screw placement, determine the safe and appropriate screw size, and provide data reference for screw size design. METHODS: The normal chest and lumbar CT data of 65 adolescents aged 12-15 years in Inner Mongolia were collected and divided into two groups, 31 cases of 12-13 years old, and 34 cases of 14-15 years old. The raw data of the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae images scanned continuously were imported into Mimics 21.0 for analysis and measurement in DICOM format. Pedicle width, pedicle height, transverse diameter, longitudinal diameter, pedicle length, pedicle outer declination, pedicle maximum external angle, pedicle head inclination, and pedicle area were measured. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) The L1-L4 pedicle width in the two groups was less than pedicle height, and pedicle width and pedicle height at L5were similar. The pedicle width determined the screw diameter, which was larger in males than in females. (2) In 12-13 years old, the screw length at L1-L5 was between 40-45 mm. In 14-15 years old, the screw length was between 40-45 mm at L1-L4 , and 45-50 mm at L5 (3) The laws of the two groups were the same. The transverse diameter of spinal canal was significantly larger than longitudinal diameter of spinal canal (P<0.05), and there was no significant difference between men and women. (4) The transverse pedicle angle: In 12-13 years old L1-L2 had small change,L2-L5 gradually increased; in 14-15 years old, L1-L5 gradually increased; it is larger in males than in females in both groups. (5) Maximum transverse pedicle angle: The two groups had the same law. L1-L5 gradually increased, and decreased with age. There was no significant difference between left and right sides and sexes. There was significant difference among different ages (P<0.05). (6) The sagittal pedicle angle: The in 12-13 years old, 30-80; in 14-15 years old, 00-50. The value decreased with age, and there was significant difference between men and women in L3-L4 (P<0.05). (7) Pedicle area: The two groups had the same rules. L1-L5 gradually increased, and L4-L5 had a clear trend of change. (8) Analysis of pedicle parameters showed that the size of the screws in the lumbar vertebrae of normal adolescents was suitable for the clinician to grasp the anatomy of the lumbar spine and improve the accuracy of clinical operation.
ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND: The Kazakhs mainly live in the Yili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture in northwestern Xinjiang. About 80% of the Kazakhs live in the areas of Yili, Tacheng, and Altay. To fully understand the physical characteristics of Kazakhs, a viviperception and head and face measurements of Kazakhs at the age of 20 and 86 were performed in Gilgelang Township, Gongliu County, Xinjiang. OBJECTIVE: To grasp the morphological traits in the head and face of Kazakh adults in Xinjiang. METHODS: Thirty-one head-face indexes of 422 Kazakh adults (219 males and 203 females) from Jiergelang county, Xinjiang were investigated. Twelve physical indices of the head and face were calculated. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: In the Kazakh group, the incidence of eye fold of the upper eyelid was 92.7%; the rate of mongoloid fold was 9.9%; the appearance rates of flat and vertical types was 6.6% and 93.4%, respectively; the appearance rates of convex, concave and straight nasal profiles were 7.8%, 36.5% and 55.7%, respectively; the appearance rates of oblique, vertical and horizontal nostril shapes were 69.5%, 20.8% and 9.7%, respectively; the appearance rates of the chin of straight type and convex type were 68.2% and 31.8%, respectively; the appearance rates of earlobe type and non-earlobe type were 96.7% and 3.3%, respectively; the appearance rates of forehead hairline and non-forehead hairline were 72% and 28%, respectively; the appearance rates of straight hair and curly hair were 99.1% and 0.9%, respectively. Most of Kazakh males have dolichocephaly and hyperdolichocephaly (81.7%, 52.5%), hypsicephaly (93.6%), aerocephaly (84%), hyrerleptorrhiny (98.2%), and hypercuryen (74%). Kazak females most have dolichocephaly and hyperdolichocephaly (76.4%, 55.7%), hypsicephaly (97%), aerocephaly (84%), hyrerleptorrhiny (98.2%), and hypercuryen (74%). The head-face characteristics of Kazak population belongs to the North Asian type of Mongoloid..
