ABSTRACT

The objective of this research was to analyze the relationship between motor coordination (CM) and Body Mass Index in Chilean schoolchildren between 7 and 9 years of age. The study was observational cross-sectional, correlational and descriptive study. 180 students of both sexes were evaluated (90 women aged 8.4 ± 0.9 years and 90 men aged 8.5 ± 0.9 years). Anthropometric weight and height variables were measured and the Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated. The CM was evaluated using the battery of Körperkoordinationstest Für Kinder (KTK). The results showed that in the lateral transposition, the normal weight group outperforms the overweight and Obesity group (p˂0.05) for women. For men, in monopedal jumps, the normal weight group also outperformed the obesity group (p˂0.05). In addition, when analyzing the differences between the sexes, it was noted that women had a higher score than men in the rear balance (p˂0.05). On the other hand, men had performed better in lateral jumps, lateral transposition and the total KTK score (p˂0.05). In conclusion, the study found that there was a lower CM index in schoolchildren with a high BMI, and that there were significant differences between men and women in terms of balance, lateral jumps, lateral transposition, and the total score of the KTK test.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore any effect of blood flow restriction during exercise on knee proprioception and motor coordination after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Methods:Thirty patients recovering from ACL reconstruction were randomly divided into an experimental group and a control group, each of 15. Both groups were given routine rehabilitation training, while the experimental group was additionally provided with 45 minutes of training with blood flow restriction, 3 times a week for 8 weeks. The blood flow restriction training involved constant pressure in the groin while the patient performed knee flexion and extension resistance training, squats, alternate knee flexion and extension and ergometer cycling. Before and after the intervention, both groups′ knee function, proprioception and lower limb motor coordination were evaluated using the Lysholm knee scale, the Humac isokinetic measurement system and surface electromyography. Results:Before the experiment there were no significant differences between the two groups in any of the measurements. After the intervention, both groups′ average Lysholm score had improved significantly, and errors in reproducing a knee angle had decreased significantly. Significantly better improvement was observed in the observation group than in the control group. That group′s average coordinated contraction rate on the affected side in extension and flexion was also significantly better than the control group′s ave-rage. Indeed, there were no significant differences in the contraction rates between the healthy and affected sides. Conclusions:Training with restricted blood flow can significantly improve knee function, proprioception and motor coordination after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study aimed to compare the physical profile and motor profile of children from 6 to 10 years old, according to their level of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). Participated 2036 children from 6 to 10 years old from São José dos Pinhais - PR. Assessed variables were stature, corporal mass, Body mass index (BMI), physical fitness (PF), and gross motor coordination (GMC). The CRF was assessed by the total distance during the 6 minutes walking test. A battery of tests KTK evaluated the GCM. The children were classified according to their levels of CRF (low-moderate-elevated). Differences between groups were tested using ANOVA one way. Data analysis was made in the SPSS software, with a meaningfulness of 5%. Children with low levels of CRF showed higher values of adiposity. On the PF tests, children with low levels of CRF showed higher values of prehension and worse performance in the other tests. Regarding GMC, children with low levels of CRF had lower coordinative performance. Meaningful differences were found in the comparisons between different groups (low-moderate, low-elevated) with an advantage in the results in moderate levels of CRF. Obtaining average levels of CRF can bring protective benefits in other variables in children's growth process and development during infancy. Evaluating the CRF doesn't only get a momentary evaluation. Still, it can also do the monitoring of an essential variable of health, as well as indicate a predisposition about other physical-motor variables.

ABSTRACT

Background: Not all second-generation antihistamines were devoid of the central nervous system (CNS) effects such as cognitive and psychomotor impairment. Although these drugs penetrate blood–brain barrier (BBB) to lesser extent, many of them have been found to produce dose-related impairment of CNS functions with interdrug differences present among them. Aim and Objective: This study is aimed to analyze and compare the effects of different antihistamines (first and second generation) on the CNS using Swiss albino mice. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four Swiss albino mice of either sex weighing around 25 - 30 g were randomly divided into six groups with six in each group. Antihistamines such as chlorpheniramine maleate (CPM), ebastine, and fexofenadine were administered to respective groups through oral route. Their effects on CNS were evaluated using rotarod and actophotometer. The data were analyzed using statistical methods. Results: CPM produced significant reduction (P < 0.05) in motor coordination and spontaneous locomotor activity. Ebastine does not have any effect on motor coordination but significant reduction (P < 0.05) in spontaneous locomotor activity. Fexofenadine does not have any effect on motor coordination and spontaneous locomotor activity. Conclusion: We conclude that CPM has significant CNS depressant actions, ebastine has minimal CNS depressant actions, and fexofenadine does not have CNS depressant actions.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT In the last decades, the use of Item Response Theory (IRT) has been implemented due to the complexity of statistical calculations that allows for in-depth analysis of educational tests, questionnaires and lists of items applied in different areas such as psychometry, sports ranking and pedagogy. Based on this premise, this study aimed to verify the suitability of the KTK motor tasks analyzing the degree of difficulty and discrimination parameters of each motor task. A total of 385 children aged 5 to 14 years participated in the study. The instrument evaluated was the KTK (Körperkoordinationstest für Kinder), consisting of four motor tasks: balance beam, single-pedal jumps, side jumps and platform transposition. Analyzes were conducted from the raw data acquired in each motor task. In order to verify the factor structure of the theoretical matrix underlying the test, an exploratory factor analysis was performed, followed by a confirmatory factor analysis. The difficulty and discrimination parameters of each motor task were analyzed using the gradual response model, based on the Item Response Theory (IRT). The results corroborate the factor structure suggested in the original version of the KTK, presenting only one factor, called motor coordination. The AFC indicators were acceptable, indicating good quality of the model adjusted for the sample. It is concluded that the IRT analysis evidenced differences in the parameters of difficulty and discrimination between the KTK motor tasks, demonstrating the importance of considering a weighting in the creation of normative tables of motor assessments.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Aim: This study investigated the impact of a handball-teaching program through the understanding of the TGfU on motor coordination (MC) and technical skills of students. Methods: The sample consisted of 43 students of both genders, with a mean age of 14.3 years (± 0.46), divided into two groups, G1 - Teaching Games of Understanding (TGfU) and G2 - TGfU + MC, and both received 20 classes. We used the Körperkoordinationstest für Kinder (KTK) for the assessment of MC and the Game Performance Assessment Instrument (GPAI) for technical skills in handball. Results: The categorization confirmed the reliability of the application of teaching programs and the results showed that, after the intervention, both groups presented meaningful improvements in MC, considering time and gender effect. The female students presented a larger impact on MC in both teaching programs, while the male students obtained a larger impact in the technical skill execution index when received the TGfU + MC model. Still, the relative frequency for the classification of a good MC increased in both groups after the intervention, and the normal MC was the one with the highest frequency in both groups and genders after the proposed program. Conclusion: We concluded that the teaching program was able to provide meaningful improvements in MC considering both groups and that the proposal of the inclusion of specific MC elevated the impact of technical skills for male students.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the long-term alcohol consumption on synaptic plasticity of mossy fiber-granule cells in cerebellar cortex and motor coordination function in mice. Methods:Thirty healthy male ICR mice aged 6-8 weeks were divided into saline group (control group)and alcohol consumption group(alcohol group) according to random number table with 15 in each group. The mice in alcohol group were injected intraperitoneally with 15% ethanol (1.6 g/kg), while the mice in control group were injected with the same volum of normal saline, all mice were injected intraperitoneally once a day for 28 consecutive days. Walking obstacle test and rotating rod fatigue test were used to observe the motor coordination ability and learning ability of mice. Electrophysiological patch clamp technique was used to detect the field potential changes of long-term synaptic plasticity induced by blowing stimulation. SPSS 22.0 software was used for statistical analysis.Independent sample t-test, paired t-test and repeated measurement analysis of variance were used for comparison between the two groups before and after intervention. Results:The electrophysiological results showed that the amplitude percentage of field potential N1 wave in the control group after blowing stimulation was (130.4±3.3)%, which was higher than that before stimulation ((100.6±2.7)%) ( t=27.07, P<0.01). And the percentage of area under N1 standardized waveform after stimulation ((128.8±4.5)%) was greater than that before stimulation ((100.2±3.5)%) ( t=19.43, P<0.01). There was no significant difference in the amplitude percentage of N1 wave in alcohol group ((97.8±4.3)%) after blowing stimulation compared with that before stimulation ((99.5±5.6)%) ( t=0.93, P>0.05). And also there was no significant difference in the area percentage under N1 wave after stimulation ((96.8±3.6)%) compared with that before stimulation ((100.2±4.2)%) ( t=2.38, P>0.05). The results of walking obstacle test showed that the total number of errors (3.14±0.19) in the alcohol group was higher than that in the control group(1.52±0.29) ( t=17.87, P<0.01), and the total error time ((63.85±9.34) ms) was longer than that in the control group ((28.93±7.21) ms) ( t=11.45, P<0.01). The results of repeated measurement analysis of variance showed that there was an interaction between time and group in the falling speed and falling latency of the two groups of mice in the rotating rod fatigue experiment ( F=4.5, 455.1, both P<0.05). The drop speed of mice in the alcohol group was significantly lower than that in the control group from day 1 to 7 (all P<0.05). The fall latency of mice in the alcohol group from day 1 to 7 was shorter than that in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (all P<0.05). Conclusion:Long-term alcohol consumption impairs synaptic plasticity in the granular layer of mice and leads to a significant decline in motor coordination and motor learning ability.

ABSTRACT

@#Handwriting difficulty is one of the main issues among school children, especially for those with motor coordination issues. The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the effectiveness of occupational therapy interventions in handwriting components for children with motor coordination issues. Current research articles were systematically searched according to the PRISMA guidelines. Two hundred and sixty-eight (n=268) research articles were identified; however, only ten (n=10) were eligible to be evaluated for this study. Studies were appraised by using McMaster Critical Review Form-Quantitative Studies. Descriptive synthesis was executed due to the heterogeneity of included studies. The review found various types of intervention conducted by occupational therapists to have a positive effect on handwriting performance components among children with motor coordination issues. Types of intervention used were visual, motor, perceptual, sensory, activity of daily living skills, training device and assistive technology and specific handwriting programs. Most handwriting intervention showed effectiveness to improve handwriting performance in motor function, visual and perceptual components. Future research should focus on homogeneity of Occupational Therapy (OT) intervention to improve handwriting performance by using specific handwriting programmes and similar standardised evaluation instruments. Practitioners of OT intervention should consider collaboration with teachers, parents and other health professionals to expedite effectiveness of intervention in handwriting performance components.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Today's society poses the need to incorporate into education those capacities related to the body and its motor activity within the margins of health, since these are determining factors for the integral development of the person. Bearing this in mind, the aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between overall physical condition (PC), motor coordination (MC) and perceived quality of life (PQL) in Spanish adolescents. For this purpose, a cross-sectional descriptive study was designed involving 1037 adolescents aged between 14 to 16 years. The SF-36 Health Questionnaire was used to assess the PQL, and the Health-related Physical Condition Battery, to evaluate global PC and MC. The results show that participants with higher PC had higher average values in the variables physical function (p < .001), physical role (p < .001), vitality (p < .05), social function (p < .001), emotional role (p < .01), mental health (p < .001), and total quality of life (p < .001); while those with lower PC had higher scores in body pain (p < .001). Likewise, participants who showed higher MC obtained better records in general health, vitality, social function, and total quality of life (p < .001 in all cases), and lower records in physical function and physical role (p < .001 in both cases). The results of this study suggest that having a higher PC, as well as a higher MC, maybe predictive variables of a better PQL in Spanish adolescents.

ABSTRACT

: Children are increasingly using games and electronic games, spending many hours in front of the television and this can hinder the process of motor development as well as the development of overweight and obesity. School physical education is an important ally in the promotion of more active life habits, with early childhood education being the first stage of schooling and the practice of motor activities in this phase is fundamental. The objective of this study was to evaluate the body mass index (BMI) and the motor performance of schoolchildren aged five years old from the Municipal Centers of Early Childhood Education in Divinópolis / MG. Motor performance was assessed with the Body Coordination Test for Children (Körperkoordinations test Für Kinder - KTK) composed of four tests: balance on your back, single-legged jumps, lateral jumps and lateral transposition on a platform. BMI was calculated from weight and height measurements. The results of the present study showed that 80.65% of the sample has impaired motor coordination, and when compared between genders, boys showed better motor coordination than girls. When analyzing BMI and motor coordination, no significant relationship was found between them. It can be concluded with the present study that the BMI did not influence the motor performance of the students, and that the majority of the students have motor coordination below the expected. The lack of physical education classes with the specialist teacher and specific stimuli for motor development may have contributed to the results found in this study, reinforcing the need for physical education teachers in early childhood education.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to analyze laterality and manual dexterity in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). From the point of view of human motor skills, laterality contributes to the motor maturation process. Among the main characteristics of autism is the delay in gross and fine motor skills, with progressive worsening in the condition. Analyzing the level of laterality of the individual with ASD becomes important because it allows a direction in the motor intervention in order to improve the functionality and quality of life of the autistic person. The sample of this study was composed of eight children, students of a public education institution, male, with an average age of 8.75 ± 1.83 years old and diagnosed with ASD based on the DSM-V. The results showed that the study participants seem to have right handedness and also better performance with the preferred hand in a manual dexterity task. It was observed that, in the task that demanded more attention and dexterity, the difference in hand performance was significant. In the task with the lowest attentional demand and manual dexterity, the performance between the hands was not significant; however, it was at that moment that the biggest mistakes in execution were observed. Motivation can be a fundamental variable for motor performance in tasks that assess execution time. It is important to emphasize the development of the motor skills of these individuals during the school phase to reduce motor difficulties and, consequently, improve quality of life, sense of well-being, autonomy and social interaction.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

@#Introduction: Muscle denervation is a process where muscles lose nerve supply due to neural damage and this may lead to paralysis in human. Muscle denervation is mainly caused by peripheral nerve injuries especially in the lower extremities that resulted in devastating effect on human daily functions and routines. Tocotrienol Rich Fraction (TRF) consist of 75% of tocotrienols have shown potential neuroprotective properties. The objective of this study is to observe motor coordination and histological characteristics on muscles that underwent sciatic nerve crush injury and supplemented with TRF. Methods: A total of 104 Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups; normal group (n=8) with no sciatic nerve crush injury, negative control (n=32) with sciatic nerve crush injury at hindlimb without treatment, positive control (n=32) sciatic nerve crush injury treated with 500 µg/kg/day of methylcobalamin, and experimental group (n=32) of rats that underwent sciatic nerve crush injury and treated with 200 mg/kg/day of TRF. Result: Skeletal muscles which located at hind limb; Soleus Muscle and Extenstor Digitorum Longus Muscle (EDL) muscle have shown an increasing in weight when it is supplemented with TRF 200 mg/kg/day and improved myelin layer of nerve. Conclusion: This study showed that TRF has the potency to improve reinnervation rate and neuron supply in hind muscle.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The coupling and coordination control of the multi-link rigid body of human body is the key to stable walking. It is reported that the use of cell phones greatly increases the chance of falling down stairs when walking; however, it lacks the analysis of the dynamic stability, motion coordination and joint mechanics of the lower limbs when walking down stairs with cell phone intervention. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of cell phone on coupling control strategy of the multi-link rigid body in lower extremity during stair descent. METHODS: Twenty healthy university students were recruited and conducted the stair descent under no-interference (single task) and cell phone (phone task) randomly. Using the method of synchronous acquisition of 3D kinematics and dynamics, the kinetic and kinematic data were synchronously collected to acquire the parameters of stair descent under both conditions. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) The intervention of phone task significantly reduced the dynamic stability in anterior-posterior/media-lateral direction, the first knee extension moment peak, the first dorsiflexion moment peak, the second hip flexion moment peak in sagittal plane during stance phase, and significantly increased the mean and standard deviation of hip-knee/knee-ankle relative phase angles during swing phase. (2) It is concluded that when the gait of human body changes from time to time, the coupling control ability of multi-link rigid bodies decreased and the risk of falling increased. (3) The intervention of phone task reduces the supporting moment of lower limbs in the supporting phase, reduces the stability of adjacent joint coordination control in the swinging phase, reduces the dynamic stability in front, back and inside directions, and increases the risk of falling.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Sports initiation is usually started during childhood and adolescence, and the beneficial effects of this practice for physical and motor capacities are already known. Recent research has shown the potential of sports to stimulate and modify cognitive development. OBJECTIVE: To verify the relationship of sports practice during childhood on cardiorespiratory, motor, attention, cognitive flexibility and cognitive processing speed. METHODS: 130 students aged 7 to 10 years participated in the study, of which 68 were athletes and 62 non-athletes, divided into sports group and control group. The researchers carried out three visits for the application of the research instruments, which were carried out in a randomized manner within the school premises, divided into three blocks: 1) attention test for cancellation and test of tracks A and B (applied collectively); 2) jumping tests; 3) anamnesis, body composition and the Körperkoordination für Kinder (KTK) test. RESULTS: Children practicing sports obtained lower values in the weight (28 ± 10.08 kg vs 33.9 ± 15.3 kg), waist circumference (57.8 ± 7.7 cm vs 61.7 ± 9.6 cm) and circumference of the hip (69.1 ± 9.5 cm vs 72.8 ± 10.5 cm). In addition, we observed higher values in single-hops scores (96.9 ± 17.3 vs 85.6 ± 14.3) and lateral jumps scores (99.1 ± 18.8 vs 91.2 ± 18.0) compared to children who do not play sports. (p < 0.05). The high performance in single-heel jumps, side jumps, motor quotient, B-trails and B-A trails presented as predictors of sports practice (CI > 0.50_. CONCLUSION: The results indicated a positive relationship between children practicing sports in childhood and interesting benefits in the ability of cognitive flexibility, without expressing differences in motor coordination compared to non-practicing children.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Introduction A good motor coordination is essential to children to be able to perform daily activities at school, at home, and in other social environments. However, some children have Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), which makes it difficult to perform these activities. As a new approach, virtual reality is being used in different rehabilitation contexts, with an emphasis on the use of motion-based games. Objective The aim of this case study was to investigate the influence of the use of Microsoft Kinect® games on the motor and functional performance of an eight years old child with DCD, trained individually. Method Pre and post-assessment of motor coordination, physical fitness, balance, and functional performance in selected activities were conducted using the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire (DCDQ-Brazil), the Movement Assessment Battery for Children, 2nd edition (MABC-2), the Perceived Efficacy and Goal Setting System (PEGS), the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), and the 2-minute walk test. Results The child presented clinically significant gains in the COPM, increased scores on items related to gross motor skills in the DCDQ-Brazil, as well as improvement in physical conditioning during the intervention, which was not maintained in the post-intervention phase, suggesting that the use of Microsoft Kinect® games should be further explored as therapeutic strategy for children with DCD. Conclusion The limitations of the case study are discussed as a means to subsidize future studies.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is characterized by neurodevelopmental delays. Physical activity (PA) may influence many of the same neurocognitive systems affected by ADHD. Therefore, PA may be a potential tool in treatment and management plans. This review synthesizes findings from studies investigating PA, fitness, and motor coordination. Studies of PA in youth on the spectrum for ADHD were considered in this paper. Main results include: a) cross-sectional studies: children with ADHD evidence PA levels higher than children that seem to be healthy. Childhood coincides with opportunities to free play; however, this advantage dissipates by adolescence, as PA programs become increasingly structured and less inclusive. In adulthood, individuals with ADHD are more likely to be obese and less likely to meet healthy lifestyle guidelines; b) longitudinal studies: PA at earlier stages predicts symptom severity in subsequent stages; and c) further studies: moderate PA activity of limited duration offers neurocognitive benefits. Multi-week intervention studies have tested diverse formats with results that differ based upon the chosen outcome and comparison group utilized. PA interventions that challenge cognition and fundamental movement skills in childhood provide benefits to children with ADHD. They also encourage children and adolescents to participate in structured programs, meet PA guidelines, and include short-term AF as part of daily routines.

ABSTRACT

The present study aims to analyze the level of motor coordination (MC) and physical fitness (PF), as well as the relationship between these two variables in children from 9 to 14 years old. A total of 738 children (400 boys) participated in this quasi-experimental study, recruited from 21 elementary public schools in a city in the north of Portugal. The MC was evaluated using the KTK, consisting of walking backwards, moving sideways, two-legged jumping and hopping over obstacles, while for the PhF the FITNESSGRAM, consisting of the tests shuttle run (20m), curl-up, sit-and-reach, push-up and trunk lift. We observed a positive association between these variables, and the children with better motor coordination presented a high level of physical fitness, which reinforces the importance of appropriated and planned activities either in school and in the community that form the basis for a level Healthy physical fitness...(AU)

ABSTRACT

Child obesity has been rising worldwide and is believed to be triggered by the negative effect that low levels of motor coordination can cause on the levels of physical activity and physical fitness during childhood. Studies analyzed the relationship between motor coordination and body composition, and pointed to a lack of research on the influence of body weight on specific motor tasks. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI) and the speed in alternate jumps in children. A total of 98 students aged 6 to 10 years took part in the study. In order to evaluate the speed in alternate jumps, one of the Köperkoordination Test für Kinder (KTK) tests that evaluates side jumps by means of a specific test was used. Statistical analysis was performed using the R-Plus program, which applied the Mann-Whitney test to verify the motor quotient (QM) differences between boys and girls, the Spearman test for correlation between QM and BMI; and ANOVA for the differences between weight classification and QM; as well as adopting a 5% (p <0.05) significance level. The results showed that there were no significant statistical differences between the sexes for the analyzed variables; however, boys scored higher values for age, BMI and QM. A weak negative correlation was observed between BMI and QM for the lateral jumps of the assessed children, demonstrating that the BMI did not have a great influence on the motor performance of the jumps when both genders were analyzed together. These results show that there is no correlation between BMI and lateral jumping skills in children with high BMI when analyzed in general, but when analyzed by gender, boys demonstrate an inversely proportional relation of BMI and lateral jumps, which was not observed in girls.
