ABSTRACT

This paper combines aspects of Bergsonian philosophy with fundamental determinants of analytical thinking, thus evaluating the clinical and ethical benefits of their interactions. To do so, the investigation will focus, especially, on the notions of "vital impulse" and "drive". The return to oneself, the virtual multiplicity, the free acts, the pragmatic deciphering of force, are themes that interpenetrate themselves in such a way in the two experiences of thought, that their intersections generate - as intended - more nuanced approaches to analytical problems, involving an essential resumption of the ethical perspective, no longer situated in relation to the unconscious, but constituting its plan

ABSTRACT

This essay, of an essay type, makes use of what it calls disbelief associated with Education and, more specifically, with Physical Education, to defend multiplicities, inspired by the writings of Deleuze and Guattari (2011a, 2011b, 2012a, 2012b). Disbelief becomes a kind of first phase for the bet on multiplicity, since by discrediting representation, what is beyond the teachers, the students and the school, one starts to believe in what is lives here and now, in the territory in which one inhabits. Aiming to cast a look at educational problems in order to reject the representation that plagues school thinking and that makes the old taunts necessary for the job market skills, competences reverberate, the text aims to instigate a teaching that assumes a cartographic posture, more exploratory and less tracing.

ABSTRACT

@#In Malaysia presently, the main cause of human malaria is by the zoonotic monkey parasite Plasmodium knowlesi. A previous study has suggested that the P. knowlesi merozoite surface protein 1 (Pkmsp-1) block IV to be a suitable multiplicity of infection (MOI) genotyping marker for knowlesimalaria. This study therefore aimed to investigate the usefulness of Pkmsp-1 block IV in assessing the MOI of P. knowlesi in clinical isolates from Malaysia. Two allele-specific PCR primer pairs targeting the two allelic families of block IV (T1 and T2) were designed, and used to genotype P. knowlesi in 200 blood samples (100 from Peninsular Malaysia and 100 from Malaysian Borneo). Results showed that the mean MOI in Malaysian Borneo was slightly higher as compared to Peninsular Malaysia (1.58 and 1.40, respectively). Almost half of the total blood samples from Malaysian Borneo (52%) had polyclonal infections (i.e., more than one allele of any family type) as compared to Peninsular Malaysia (33%) samples. The T1 allelic family was more prevalent in Peninsular Malaysia (n=75) than in Malaysian Borneo (n=60). The T2 allelic family, however, was more prevalent in the Malaysian Borneo (n=87 vs n=53 respectively). This study shows that the single locus Pkmsp-1 block IV can serve as a simple alternative genetic marker for estimating knowlesi malaria MOI in a population. Future MOI studies should focus on macaque populations as macaques are the natural host of P. knowlesi.

ABSTRACT

AВSTRAСT The aim of the current reflection article is to offer a reading of the concept of love in Alain Badiou's thought that mediates and harmonizes the abstract and formal background of his metaontology with his well-known interventions on this concept aimed at the general public. This fills a gap in the literature that analyzes this region of his thinking. The article undertakes this task in three moments: First the connection, which is assumed to exist, between the theory of being as multiplicity and the Lacanian theory of sexuation is explained in order to indicate the continuity and limit between them. After that, we place love in the coordinates of the theory of the event, the subject and the truth. Finally we interpret Badiou's proposal in the light of some elements that come from Plato's theory of love and what we call a communism of difference or minimum.

RESUMО

ABSTRACT

Abstract In recent years, the investigation of spallation reactions have caught the attention of scientific community due to their application in the transmutation of nuclear waste by using the Accelerator Driven System (ADS) reactors. Due to the experimental difficulties that nuclear reactions researches face; the study of spallation reaction by using simulation codes is more suitable for generating more complete database for different energy ranges. This work aims to study spallation reactions induced by protons at intermediate energies 0.5 - 2 GeV on non-fissionable nuclei by using the Monte Carlo code: CRISP (Collaboration Rio-Ilhéus-São Paulo). The target nuclei studied were: 184 W, 197 Au and 208 Pb, focusing on the last one. Multiplicity of light particles obtained with CRISP was compared with the available experimental data and other Monte Carlo codes involved in the study of spallation reactions, resulting on a quite satisfactory agreement.

ABSTRACT

The association tests between molecular markers and phenotypic traits are crucial for the Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) identification. Biotechnological advances increased the molecular marker information; consequently, the number of genotype-phenotype association tests required incremented too. The multiple statistical inferences (multiplicity) demand corrections of the p-values obtained for each comparison in order to keep limited the error rates for the family of association tests. However, classic statistical correction methods such as Bonferroni, False Discovery Rate (FDR) and the Effective Number of Independent Test (Meff) were developed in the context of independent data. Wherever, when the population genetic structure is present, the data are no longer independent. In this paper, we propose a method of correction for multiplicity based on estimation of the effective number of tests from a model that adjust for the underlying correlation structure. We evaluate the performance of the proposed procedure in the estimation of p-values for a set of simulated QTL. The results suggest that the proposed method provides control of FDR and has more power than other methods for multiplicity correction used in association mapping.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In the current American Joint Committee on Cancer staging system of breast cancer, only tumor size determines T-category regardless of whether the tumor is single or multiple. This study evaluated if tumor multiplicity has prognostic value and can be used to subclassify breast cancer. METHODS: We included 5,758 patients with invasive breast cancer who underwent surgery at Samsung Medical Center, Seoul, Korea, from 1995 to 2012. RESULTS: Patients were divided into two groups according to multiplicity (single, n = 4,744; multiple, n = 1,014). Statistically significant differences in lymph node involvement and lymphatic invasion were found between the two groups (p < .001). Patients with multiple masses tended to have luminal A molecular subtype (p < .001). On Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, patients with multiple masses had significantly poorer disease-free survival (DFS) (p = .016). The prognostic significance of multiplicity was seen in patients with anatomic staging group I and prognostic staging group IA (p = .019 and p = .032, respectively). When targeting patients with T1-2 N0 M0, hormone receptor–positive, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)–negative cancer, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis also revealed significantly reduced DFS with multiple cancer (p = .031). The multivariate analysis indicated that multiplicity was independently correlated with worse DFS (hazard ratio, 1.23; 95% confidence interval, 1.03 to 1.47; p = .025). The results of this study indicate that tumor multiplicity is frequently found in luminal A subtype, is associated with frequent lymph node metastasis, and is correlated with worse DFS. CONCLUSIONS: Tumor multiplicity has prognostic value and could be used to subclassify invasive breast cancer at early stages. Adjuvant chemotherapy would be necessary for multiple masses of T1–2 N0 M0, hormone-receptor-positive, and HER2-negative cancer.

ABSTRACT

Background: Using recombinant adeno-associated virus 2 (rAAV-2), we attempted to establish a HEK293T cell line that is able to site-specifically integrate and stably express glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF). Results:Recombinant vector with enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) and GDNF (pTR-P5-EGFP-IRES-GDNF), as well as that carrying Rep genes and SV40 promoters (pSVAV2) were constructed and packed. HEK293T cells were co-infected with rAAV-2/EGFP-GDNF and rAAV-2/SVAV2 virus separately at 1 x 10(4),1 x 10(5),and 1x10(6) of multiplicity of infection (MOI). The efficiency of transduction was detected using flow cytometry. Additionally, the infected HEK293T cells were separately validated by touchdown polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Western-blot. After 72 h of transduction, the rate of EGFP positive cell was 22%, 45% and 49% at the MOIs of 1 x 10(4),1 x 10(5) and 1 x 10(6), respectively. On the 3rd, 6th and 9th day of cell passage, there was no significant difference in the cell viability and proliferation rate between transduction and control groups. Importantly, touchdown PCR showed that there was a specific PCR amplified product band in the lane of infected cells. Furthermore, GDNF expression was detected in the infected cells after 15 and 180 d of cultivation. Conclusions: A HEK293T cell line able to site-specifically integrate and stably express GDNF was established.

ABSTRACT

Aim The limited transfection efficiency for plasmid in primary neonatal rat cardiomyocytes, which are terminal differentiated cells, and long foreign DNA (the RIP140 gene sequence are as long as 3.5 kb) cause us to choose a better system to study RIP140 gene expression in primary non-replicative cells. Methods Full-length of RIP140 was cloned into pAdTracker-CMV shuttle vector, and then recombined with virus backbone pAdEasy-1 vector in BJ5183 bac-teria.Positive recombinant plasmid was confirmed by sequence analysis and restriction enzyme determina-tion,and then transfected into AD293 cells for amplifi-cation.Titers of virus particles were determined by Tis-sue Culture Infectious Dose 50 (TCID50 )method and cell vitality was analyzed by CCK-8 kit in cardiomyo-cytes.RIP140 gene was identified by Western blot. Results Sequence analysis suggested that full-length RIP140 gene was cloned correctly into AdEasyTM sys-tem.Virus titers of Ad-RIP140 and Ad-GFP were 1011.3 and 1011.7 PFU·mL-1 ,respectively.Cell vitali-ty was not affected when the Multiplicity of Infection (MOI)was lower than 200.Green fluorescent protein (GFP)and Western blot analysis showed RIP140 gene was remarkably increased in cardiomyocytes for 12h in-fection by Ad-RIP140 (P<0.05 ).Conclusion Re-combinant adenovirus containing RIP140 gene was suc-cessfully constructed and effectively expressed in car-diomyocytes.These will be helpful for further research on the function of RIP140 in cardiomyocytes.

ABSTRACT

The paper proposes that there is a difference between thinking of the links and thinking with the links as a starting point. In the latter, it is necessary to include the logic of multiplicity, a rhizomatic thought; in other words, one which doesn't place the center in the subject, in the story, nor in the unconscious, but instead which travels through the Between, from the middle. Between being link production. These ideas are developed from the report of a session of family therapy.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To analyse the genetic diversity of Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) using msp-1 and msp-2 as antigenic markers.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Parasite DNA was extracted from 100 blood samples collected from P. falciparum-positive patients confirmed by microscopy, and followed by PCR-genotyping targeting the msp-1 (block2) and msp-2 (block 3) allelic families.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>All the families of msp-1 (K1, MAD20 and R033) and msp-2 (FC27 and 3D7) locus were observed. Results revealed that K1 (60/100) was the most predominant genotype of msp-1 allelic family followed by the genotypes of MAD20 (50/100) and R033 (45/100). In the msp-2 locus, FC27 genotype (62/100) showed higher frequency than 3D7 genotype (55/100). The allelic families were detected either alone or in combination with other families. However, no R033/MAD20 combination was observed. Multiplicity of infection (MOI) with msp-1 was higher in the locality of Ikorodu (1.50) than in Lekki (1.39). However, MOI with msp-2 was lower in the locality of Ikorodu (1.14) than in Lekki (1.76). There was no significant difference in the mean MOI between the two study areas (P=0.427).</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>The observation of limited diversity of malaria parasites may imply that the use of antigenic markers as genotyping tools for distinguishing recrudescence and re-infections with P. falciparum during drug trials is subjective.</p>

ABSTRACT

In this article,we discuss the contributions of the work of the Dutch philosopher Annemarie Mol to Social Psychology. To do so, we present some of her main reflections, such as the nonperspectivist approach of reality and the concepts of multiplicity and ontological politics. In doing so, we aimed to call attention to the possibility of ordering and coordinating the reality in different ways and of recognizing that a phenomenon is formed by multiple actors. Therefore, we aimed to stand for a Social Psychology that follows the actor-network theory approach, as it searches complex relations, which articulate humans and nonhumans and perform multiple realities. A Social Psychology that escapes from the realism that characterizes most scientific investigations and that doesn´t presuppose a reality that is previous and independent of our actions. A Social Psychology that takes as a starting point a reality that becomes real through our practices

ABSTRACT

The present text points out some of the important contributions made by Maria Helena Souza Patto to Psychology and Education in our country, especially through her latest book Exercises of Indignation. It is stated in her work not only the competent and caring researcher, the requested and respected professor, but also the altruistic, friendly, receiving and indignated woman, that had always questioned what was usually being considered as normal. It is possible to visualize the many "Marias" presented in this article by one of her students in USP Post-Graduation in 1988. It is especially prominent in this text the daily practice of resistance that the writings of Maria Helena emphasize. Resistance, not as mere reaction, but as creation, production of rupture, affirmation of other logics and other realities. This is one of the many "Marias" presented in this work.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, my aim is to investigate the significance of the problem of freedom in the context of the discussion between spiritualist tradition and experimental psychology. My goal is to demonstrate that the concept of mind as duration nonspatialized and as qualitative multiplicity is capable of supplying the obstacles to freedom that are established by experimental psychology. Therefore, I turn to the works of Henri Bergson and Farias Brito, in so far as recognized and positioned themselves in the face of the experimentalists' purposes. The conclusion is that causality is not determination and therefore does not exclude freedom.
