ABSTRACT

Introduction The following bibliographic review was carried out with the purpose of recognizing the clinical and radiographic characteristics that must be considered in the diagnosis of external root resorption, including treatments. Methods A bibliographic search was carried out in PubMed/Medline, Cochrane Library and Google Scholar databases under the term "external root resorption", from 2010 to 2022 in Spanish and English. Experimental studies and bibliographic reviews were selected, and finally 17 articles were included. Results The results obtained indicated that each type of resorption presents specific clinical characteristics that differentiate them, these are: for external inflammatory resorption a negative pulp vitality; for replacement external resorption the absence of mobility and metallic percussion; for cervical external resorption a pink coloration of the crown; superficial external resorption does not present any type of clinical symptoms and transient apical collapse presents a transient change in color. Conclusion External root resorptions require accurate and early diagnosis. A clinical examination should be performed with emphasis on the following: probing, coloration, mobility, and vitality tests.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE To explore the effects of narrative pharmacy management on medication compliance, negative emotions, and quality of life in patients with cardiovascular disease complicated with negative emotions. METHODS A total of 49 patients with drug use problems and negative emotions attending the cardiovascular pharmacy clinic of Wuhan First Hospital from February to August 2023 were selected as the study objects, narrative pharmacy model was applied for patient management during their visits; pharmaceutical care and emotional management were performed after 2 weeks of treatment and a follow-up visit was conducted to evaluate and record the management effect one month later. RESULTS Adopting a narrative pharmacy management model, 49 patients were involved in 114 drug related consultation questions. Compared with the visit, after one month of management, the number of medication types taken by patients significantly decreased [4.00 (2.00, 6.00) vs. 3.00 (1.50, 5.00), P<0.05], the incidence of adverse reactions significantly decreased (32.65% vs. 2.04%, P<0.001), the rate of blood pressure and lipid compliance significantly increased (30.61% vs. 95.92%, P<0.001), and the score of the patient’s medication compliance significantly improved ([ 3.94±2.44) vs. (6.78±2.07), P<0.01]. The depression score significantly decreased [3.00 (2.00, 4.50) vs. 2.00 (0.00, 3.00), P<0.001], the anxiety score significantly reduced [3.00 (2.00, 4.50) vs. 1.00 (0.00, 2.00), P<0.001], quality of life score was significantly improved [22.00 (19.00, 22.00) vs. 23.00 (23.00, 24.50), P<0.01]. In the satisfaction survey, there was a slight increase in the overall satisfaction proportion (91.84% vs. 97.96%, P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS The application of narrative pharmacy in cardiovascular pharmacy clinic can improve patient compliance, reduce adverse drug reactions, enhance the effectiveness of drug treatment, avoid drug interactions, effectively improve the anxiety and depression, and ultimately improve the quality of life.

ABSTRACT

With the rapid development of modern biomedicine, subjective factors such as human emotion and disease experience are diluted. Accurate data, programmed diagnosis and treatment process and other objective factors cut off the effective communication between doctors and patients, aggravating the already tense doctor-patient relationship and intensifying various conflicts in the clinic. In order to improve clinical humanistic care, medical and nursing workers have launched reflections and explorations. Narrative medicine is a new form of medical humanistic practice, while parallel chart, as an important way of its practice, records patients’ subjective experiences and painful feelings. It is of great theoretical significance and clinical value to sinicize narrative medicine and construct and promote parallel chart in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) by studying the research progress of parallel chart in China and its application in TCM.

ABSTRACT

Narrative competence is one of the factors to reflect humanistic literacy of doctors and nurses. According to the advice of many experts, the narrative competence should be improved from the stage of medical students through the two major tools including close reading of text and reflective writing. Based on the background of prevention and control of COVID-19 outbreak, this paper aimed to clarify the focus and methodology of close reading and reflective writing, that was, close reading was supposed to focus on the analysis of disease metaphors in classic literature and narrative function in clinical works and realism works, and writing tended to focus on the the differentiation of writing purpose and the writing guidance in different texts. The proper guidance plus solid training in close reading and writing will definitely lay a strong foundation for medical students in achieving humanistic quality.

ABSTRACT

Death is the last transitional rite in the life process. Whether for the life state, family ethics or social relations of both the dead or the living, death indicates a major change and hides a certain crisis. The bio-health narrative concept puts forward that any transitional rite of life process requires narrative intervention and narrative care, as does death. Under the guidance of the concept, the profession of narrative death-doula came into being. Using the narrative concept as a framework, hospice narrative doulas provide emotional, physical, mental support to the terminal stage subjects and their families by accompanying the dying at close range, listening to their life stories, helping them record and dictate their autobiographies, reconstructing and repairing interpersonal narrative connections, and even planning funeral details with the dying. The death narrative doulas will create a personalized and humanized ritual and process around death, restore the spirituality and humanity which has been lost in the modern medical context to death itself.

ABSTRACT

On the whole, the Yi Xue Cong Zheng Lun written by Jing Xian, a famous doctor in modern Liaoning, outlines the unique vision of the narrative medicine focusing on "benevolence". To be specific, the writing is good at constructing narrative projection, and makes full use of the essence of relevant traditional culture such as the body-country integration idea, the military strategy and tactics and the calligraphy aesthetics concept to create narrative schema. It focus on the concrete example narration of the cultural ideology of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM), such as the concept of interlinked viscera, the ideology that the characteristics of the treatment remain the same as the external properties of the disease, the compatibility of opposite and complementary and the idea of making prescriptions and selecting optimal Chinese herbal medicines. In addition, Jing Xian has constructed his professional identity as a doctor of TCM through in-depth narrative reflection. From the perspective of narrative medicine, the study of Yi Xue Cong Zheng Lun has certain instruction and reference significance in the inheritance of TCM culture, and can help to promote the in-depth exploration and multi-dimensiona reflection of "modern Liaoning TCM culture".

ABSTRACT

By reviewing the research context of narrative medicine in China in the past five years and sorting out the development status of narrative medicine in clinical practice in China, this paper pointed out the reasons why narrative medicine is difficult to implement in clinical practice in China at present. It mainly includes three points: the awareness of narrative medicine within the clinical medical community is not high; the humanities community focuses on the development of narrative medicine in medical education, resulting in rather scarce research on narrative medicine based on clinical practice; the research objects of narrative medicine are too narrow, ignoring the importance of the public and the front-line clinical personnel in the clinical practice of narrative medicine. Accordingly, this paper proposed corresponding countermeasures: it is advocated to investigate the awareness of narrative medicine in clinical medicine and the public, and it is suggested to list them as important objects of narrative medicine education. At the same time, it is recommended that the relationship between narrative medicine and doctor-patient communication should be clarified theoretically to guide the construction of a harmonious doctor-patient relationship in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

Starting from the consideration that the psychoanalytic method is an invariant element of the human activity known as psychoanalysis, this paper aims to allocate the use of fictional narratives within the scope of qualitative research with the psychoanalytic method. It is justified insofar as it promotes the discussion of the theoretical foundations of this type of narrative, which has been gaining notoriety in the qualitative field. Therefore, the text is organized into three parts. The first discusses the different types of psychoanalytic research in general. In the second, it presents different uses of the psychoanalytic method in qualitative investigations. In the third, it inserts fictional narratives into the scope of qualitative research with a psychoanalytical method and presents a fictional narrative as an example. It appears that the rigor of fictional narratives is based precisely on the use of the psychoanalytic method, giving them clinical-epistemological coherence.

ABSTRACT

(analytical) The article presents a theoretical-methodological reflection derived from research on experiences of participation and subjectivities in boys and girls, located in institutional and community contexts in three countries of the region. In opposition to the approaches that assume these people as receiving subjects per se, methodology of this study adopted narrative research, given its potential for the participants to narrate themselves, to know themselves and to transform themselves. Thus, in the first part, an ontological, epistemic and methodological approach to narrative research with children is proposed. Then, based on the field work of the study, research techniques that favor horizontal interaction for the generation of knowledge with these people are addressed, through the dialogic and the aesthetic. Finally, the conclusions are presented.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: This article presents the results of an experimental study that sought to contrast the effect of the entertainment education message (written versus audiovisual) on the cognitive processes of reception, as a function of the need for cognition. Method: 109 MSM participated, randomly distributed, in two experimental conditions (written versus audiovisual message). Results: We found that the need for cognition moderated the effect of message modality on cognitive elaboration and in contra-argumentation, but not on reactance. Data shows that written message increased cognitive elaboration in participants with low need for cognition and generated less contra-argumentation in participants with a higher need for cognition. Conclusions: The effectiveness of an entertainment-education message is determined by both the characteristics of the message (the modality of presentation) and the individual differences of people (the need for cognition). In particular, the need for cognition is a relevant variable for understanding the cognitive processes of reception (cognitive elaboration and contra-argumentation) that play a fundamental role in the study of narrative persuasion.

ABSTRACT

No contexto latinoamericano, o bordar remete à transmissão transgeracional e a práticas políticas e processos de luta e luto no laço social. The research-intervention project Fictional narratives and chronic pain careacted in the Sector of Pain and Palliative Care of a public hospital, offering an adjunct to health care. The Garden of Stories Atelierwas one of its devices, which proposed the invented embroidery as threads of support for a shared work. In Latin America, embroidery refers to transgenerational transmission, and to political practices and processes of struggle and mourning in the social bond. This article aims to retrieve the history of embroidery beyond the colonial perspective and, from there, to approach this experience of research-intervention in the hospital and its possibilities. The invented embroidery is thought to emphasize the dimension of improvisation and creativity of this practice, as an affective support for the weaving of narratives, from the willingness to be together around an activity without prescriptions. ABSTRACT

The buccal adipose body (BAB) is a well- defined multilobulated adipose component, located bilaterally in the facial region, closely related to nervous and vascular structures. BAB removal is a widely studied procedure in the field of maxillofacial surgery, used mainly to cover defects. Its influence on facial aesthetics has started to popularize the removal of the BAB buccal extension to obtain a more stylized face, an intervention widely known as minimally invasive and without complications. The objective of this study was to collect and evaluate studies that report and evaluate complications associated with the removal of BAB for cosmetic reasons. The evidence was reviewed in the Medline databases via PubMed, Epistemonikos, Scopus, and Google Scholar, using predefined terms, selecting primary studies from case reports. 7 articles with a total of 10 patients were included; Of these, eight patients underwent this procedure in Brazil, one in the United States, and one in Chile. The distribution of the population was 3:7 between men and women with an average age of 35 years and a range between 23 to 49 years. In relation to the reported complications, 100 % of the patients presented facial asymmetry, 80 % presented facial edema, 30 % manifested sialocele, trismus 20 %, 40 % presented hematoma, 20 % compromised general state, 20 % presented dysphagia, in the cases of hypoesthesia, paresthesia, abscess, seroma, facial paralysis, odynophagia, fever were expressed in 10 % of the studied population. All the studies described a surgical reintervention after cosmetic removal of the bichat adipose body. The scarce literature and its low quality do not allow estimating the real percentage of possible complications, nor is it possible to determine their long-term results since there is no evidence of appropriate follow-up for these patients.

ABSTRACT

It is important to understand the historical character of the life of a physical education professional in relation to the discipline as a structuring social practice beyond its norms, junctures, pedagogical purposes, and other formal references. It is possible to demonstrate that to educate in and from physical education is to recognize it not only in its historical-formal, but also cultural dimension. This means that its addressees are more than a group of schoolchildren who are depositaries of actions. On the contrary, it is about corporeities in formation and tension, because as evidenced in this study, physical education serves to em power, regulate, and give a place to subjects in society, even if it is a lifeline to face poverty.

ABSTRACT

Teacher training, educational research, pedagogical relations, and knowledge articulate a complex discussion that, in particular, can be mediated by the "pedagogical narrative;" that is to say, a method that helps us in the inquiry into the teaching action and the pedagogical experience. This in order to discover questions that lead us to potential "collaborative" productions of pedagogical knowledge, the reconstruction of the pedagogical memory of the school, and the transformation of educational practices (Suárez, 2011, p. 17). This transformation device focuses its attention on the accounts of teaching experience that question, relate, participate, focus, and build strategies for inquiry and reflection through narratives.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Prevalence of violence in Brazil is high, which contributes to an increasing number of trauma-related disorders, especially post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study aims to present a case series of PTSD patients treated with narrative exposure therapy (NET) in two public health centers in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Health professionals were trained in a two-week workshop to deliver NET. Exposure to violence and other potentially traumatic events, as well as PTSD were assessed by interviewers before treatment and six months later in follow-up interviews conducted by blind assessors. Multiple traumatic events, including different types of childhood and sexual abuse, intimate partner violence and community violence were reported. Five patients were exposed to community violence, and one to domestic violence, during or after NET treatment. Treatment delivery was integrated into the routine of health centers. Eight patients completed NET and presented a substantial reduction in PTSD severity at six-month follow-up. NET is a feasible and effective treatment for PTSD patients exposed to ongoing violence, and can be integrated into established public health services.

SARS-CoV-2 infection can trigger the occurrence of numerous pathologies, some of them endocrinological. The present narrative review works on the association between COVID-19 and subacute thyroiditis, which describes epidemiological and pathophysiological aspects, clinical and laboratory manifestations, treatment, and prognosis. The prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in COVID-19 patients fluctuates between 13 and 64%, explicitly concerning subacute thyroiditis; it has been described as a change in prevalence from 0.5% to 10% between 2019 and 2020. The binding of the SARS-CoV-2 virus with the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptor (ACE-2) widely expressed in the thyroid gland causes subacute thyroiditis, generating thyrotoxicosis-like clinical manifestations. However, the presentation of subacute thyroiditis associated with COVID-19 may be atypical. The central elements of the treatment are similar to those used in any subacute thyroiditis. We conclude that this entity must be considered in differential diagnoses of patients currently or previously infected with SARS-CoV-2 that present a febrile syndrome, elevated inflammatory parameters, or persistent tachycardia without a specified aetiology.

ABSTRACT

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is here to stay. Nonpharmacological interventions such as hand hygiene, social distancing, and respiratory hygiene have remained the mainstay to curb the spread of the virus, and these are sustainable. To understand the information, education, and communication (IEC) efforts undertaken during previous pandemics and successful behavior change strategies that may be applicable to ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we conducted a narrative review of articles using PubMed search on September 11, 2022. The results highlighted that reinforced IEC is the need of the hour in efforts against COVID-19 pandemic. The communication strategy during a pandemic should be of three stages aligned to the objectives of building a basic understanding and knowledge in the target population: building an awareness of the threat; personal actions to minimize the impact; and reinforcing the need for appropriate actions to minimize disease transmission, in that order. An innovative strategy of displaying IEC on the daily essential products can result in a sustainable solution that might result in a “felt need” in the community to follow COVID-19 appropriate behavior. A broad base of stakeholders' engagement with civil bodies, nongovernmental organizations, private sectors with well-defined responsibilities and accountability would offer an enabling environment for these efforts in ultimately curbing the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: the first COVID-19 case in Brazil was confirmed on February 26, 2020. As of March 17, 2023, the Ministry of Health reported 699,634 deaths from COVID-19, with a case fatality rate of 1.9%. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil extends to socioeconomic and healthcare systems, reflecting significant regional disparities. Objective: To analyze mortality, incidence, and case fatality rates for COVID-19 in the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina, in the southern region of Brazil. Methods: This is an ecological time-series study using official Brazilian secondary data for COVID-19 cases and deaths. Data were extracted from the dashboard of the State Health Department of Santa Catarina and Paraná. Temporal series were developed for trend analysis using the Prais-Winsten regression model. Statistical analyses were performed using STATA 14.0 software (College Station, TX, USA, 2013). Results: In the analysis of rates over the entire period, trends for mortality, case fatality, and incidence in the state of Santa Catarina are decreasing, decreasing, and stationary, respectively. In Paraná, rates over the entire period showed a stationary trend for mortality, decreasing for case fatality, and increasing for incidence. Conclusion: COVID-19 had a devastating effect on the states of Santa Catarina and Paraná. Both states experienced the progression of the COVID-19 pandemic, with higher case fatality and mortality rates observed in Paraná, while Santa Catarina had a higher incidence rate over the three years of the COVID-19 pandemic.
