ABSTRACT

Esophageal cancer is a malignant tumor of the digestive system that has a high incidence in China. The traditional treatment methods include surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, but the long-term efficacy is not good and the side effects are obvious. As a traditional physical therapy, hyperthermia has no significant toxic and side effects. Studies have shown that hyperthermia can increase the sensitivity of esophageal cancer to radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and its combined use in the treatment of esophageal cancer can prolong the survival and improve the quality of life. In addition, the innovation of materials and technologies brings new breakthroughs to tumor hyperthermia.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, tumor hyperthermia has become a hot research topic as an adjuvant therapy to traditional tumor therapy. Hyperthermia can directly induce tumor cell necrosis or apoptosis, or inhibit tumor progression by destroying tumor blood vessels. Meantime, it can also activate the response of immune cells and cytokines in the immune system of the host, thereby regulating the immune state of tumor microenvironment. Multiple combined effects influence the tumor progression. A thorough understanding of the biological mechanism of hyperthermia is beneficial to the development of novel therapeutic methods. In this paper, the biological mechanism of hyperthermia in killing tumors was mainly reviewed.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, increasing evidence has shown that hyperthermia is safe, effective and causes low toxicity. Hyperthermia can exert synergistic effect with other treatments, such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy. It has become an important adjuvant anti-tumor treatment secondary to surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and biological treatment. Hyperthermia can improve the efficacy of radiotherapy and chemotherapy by directly inhibiting tumor cells and heat-induced radiosensitizing effect. Hence, hyperthermia is gradually applied in the multimodality treatment of tumors. In this article, we intend to review the research progress on the application of tumor hyperthermia in conventional radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and new biomaterials.

ABSTRACT

Since the 21st century, with the changes of people's living habits and the aggravation ofenvironmental pollution, the incidence of tumors has been increasing day by day, which has become the main deathcauseof human diseases.Atpresent,in addition to the three major conventional treatments of tumors, the emergence of hyperthermia provides a safer and more effective solution for the prevention and treatment of tumors.Attributed to the rapid development of mechanical manufacturing, computertechnology, molecularbiology, materials science and other disciplines, precision hyperthermia presented by radiofrequency and ultrasonic focusing hyperthermia guided by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) non-invasive temperature measure technology,as well as molecular level targeted hyperthermia have provided a broader perspective for the treatment of tumors. This article reviews the partial research progress on precision hyperthermia to understand the current general situation of precision hyperthermia for tumors.

ABSTRACT

Hyperthermia has been a research hot spot since it was approved by FDA as one of the 5 major therapeutic modalities for tumor since 1989. Pre-clinicaland clinical researches have confirmed the prominent radiosensitizing effect of hyperthermia. In this article, the research progress on hyperthermia combined with radiation therapy was summarized based upon clinical evidence. The challenges and issues during the procedure of hyperthermia combined with radiation therapy were analyzed from the perspectives of treatment temperature, frequency and interval time of hyperthermia, interval time and time sequence between hyperthermia and radiation therapy, etc. Besides, the application progress and prospect of hyperthermia combined with radiation therapy were reviewed, aiming to provide clinical evidence for the combination of hyperthermia and radiation therapy.
