ABSTRACT

Objective To observe the therapeutic efficacy of electroacupuncture at the acupoints on extremities or abdominal acupoints and orally taking Mosapride in treating functional dyspepsia (FD) and the different effects on life style, for guiding the points selection in acupuncture-moxibustion treatment for FD.Method Sixty FD patients were randomized into an extremity-electroacupuncture group, an abdomen-electroacupuncture group, and a Western medication group by their visiting sequence, 20 cases in each group. In theextremity-electroacupuncture group, Zusanli (ST36), Sanyinjiao (SP6), Neiguan (PC6) and Gongsun (SP4) were selected. Bilateral Zusanli and Sanyinjiao were respectively connected to G6805-2 electroacupuncture apparatus, 30 min for each session, once everyother day, 10 sessions in total. In the abdomen-electroacpuncture group, Zhongwan (CV12), Tianshu (ST25), and Qihai (CV6) were selected. Bilateral Tianshu were connected to electroacupuncture apparatus, with same treatment time, frequency and sessions. The Western medication group was intervened by oral administration of Mosapride, 1 tablet each time, 3 times a day, for 20 d in total. The three groups were evaluated by using Nepean Dyspepsia Index (NDI) prior to the treatment, after the treatment and 1 month after the treatment (follow-up study), and the therapeutic efficacies were estimated after the treatment.Result The effective rate of the extremity-electroacupuncture group was higher than that of the abdomen-electroacupuncture group and Western medication group, while there was no significant difference between the abdomen-electroacupuncture group and Western medication group in comparing the effective rate. After the treatment, the improvement of Nepean Dyspepsia Symptom Index (NDSI) in the extremity-electroacupuncture group was more significant than that in the abdomen-electroacupuncture group and Western medication group (P0.05). The 1-month follow-up showed that the improvement of symptoms in the extremity-electroacupuncture group was more significant than that in the abdomen-electroacupuncture group (P0.05). The 1-month follow-up study showed that the quality of life in the extremity-electroacupuncture group was still significantly improved compared to that before the treatment, while the improvement in the Western medication group was insignificant. Conclusion Electroacupuncture at the acupoints on extremities and abdominal acupoints both can more effectively and consistently improve the symptoms and quality of life of FD patients compared to orally taking Mosapride. Compared to electroacupuncture at the abdominal acupoints, electroacupuncture at the extremity points works better in improving the symptoms of FD butdoesn't show advantage in improving the quality of life.

ABSTRACT

Objective To observe the clinical efficacy of scraping therapy plus Yi Yi Ren (Semen Coicis) congee in treating functional dyspepsia due to dampness-heat blocking the stomach. Method Sixty-four patients were divided into an observation group and a control group by using the random number table, 32 cases in each group. The observation group was intervened by scraping therapy plus Yi Yi Ren (Semen Coicis) congee, while the control group was by Mosapride citrate dispersible tablets. The two groups were both treated for 4 weeks. The traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) symptom score, Nepean Dyspepsia Symptom Index (NDSI), and Nepean Dyspepsia Life Quality Index (NDLQI) were observed before and after the intervention and the clinical efficacy was evaluated, for comparison and analysis. Result The total effective rate was respectively 93.8%in the observation group and 78.1%in the control group, and the observation group was superior to the control group (P<0.05);after the intervention, the TCM symptom scores and NDSI scores dropped significantly in the two groups (P<0.05,P<0.01), and the NDLQI scores increased significantly in the two groups (P<0.05), and the improvements in the observation group were more significant (P<0.05). Conclusion Scraping therapy plus Yi Yi Ren (Semen Coicis) congee and Mosapride citrate dispersible tablets are both effective in treating functional dyspepsia due to dampness-heat blocking the stomach, while the former one can produce a more significant therapeutic efficacy and improve the symptoms and quality of life in a better way.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/AIMS: It is unknown whether the prokinetics improve the quality of life in patients with functional dyspepsia. Thus, we evaluate the effect of the mosapride, selective 5-HT4 agonist, on the symptom and life quality of patients with functional dyspepsia using the Nepean dyspepsia index-Korean version (NDI-K), a reliable and validated disease-specific quality of life questionnaire. METHODS: A single, open trial was performed in 129 patients with functional dyspepsia. Patients were received mosapride 5 mg t.i.d before each meal for 4 weeks. The symptoms and quality of life were measured with the NDI-K at baseline and 4 weeks. The responsiveness of the NDI-K was evaluated by correlation with symptom scores. RESULTS: All the 15 symptom scores and the dyspepsia score decreased after treatment (p<0.05). The total symptom score decreased from 60.9 +/- 25.8 to 24.7 +/- 20.4 (p=0.001). Correlations were observed between the total symptom score and the NDI-K score (r=0.47, p=0.001), and between the total symptom score and each score in 5 subscales (r=0.25-0.44, p=0.001). The NDI-K score was significantly increased in the effective group whose dyspepsia score decreased more than 50% of the score at baseline, compared with that of ineffective group. Any significant adverse effect and prolongation of QT interval were not occurred in all patients. CONCLUSIONS: A prokinetic drug, mosapride improves the symptoms and the quality of life in patients with functional dyspepsia.
